Chapter 241 Another Pordhail

Edited by: Kanaa-senpai

A little while ago, I received a letter from my teacher living in the imperial capital.

The letter said that she would bring Pius and come to the frontier settlement soon, and I was told to share this with those around me and to have them guide her to the reception room when she arrives.

Just a little while ago, I received a report that Pordhail had arrived, and I thought it was my teacher, so I came to the reception room…

”Uh, nice to meet you, I’m Neil Atmiras.”

”…It’s an honor to meet you, I’m Estesia Pordhail. I’ve heard a lot about you, Neil-sama.”

The person waiting in the reception room wasn’t my teacher, but a different Pordhail.

It seems that the message I passed on had become like a game of telephone, and by the time it reached the people at the main gate of the mansion, who were from the Spear of Shouhyou, only the part about “letting Pordhail through” had been conveyed.

That’s how the mistake with Pordhail happened, and I found myself in a situation where I was facing a Pordhail I had never met before, one-on-one.

”Um, what brings you here today?”

 ”That’s… um, I thought it was a courtesy visit…”

This person is really awkward, isn’t she? I had heard that Estesia Pordhail was a confident person who wouldn’t flatter or be intimidated by royalty or nobles, but the person in front of me was the complete opposite of what I had heard. Was this person an imposter who was just using the name? Such doubts began to arise.

I thought about checking her magic, but I quickly realized that it wasn’t possible, and the quality of the magic flowing through her body was clearly exceptional, unlike any ordinary person. At the very least, among the people I know, only my teacher has magic that surpasses this.

I’ve obtained a conviction that the person in front of me is Estesia Pordhail, but the rumors I’ve heard about her are vastly different from the person I’m seeing, which is causing me even more confusion.

Other than the fact that she possesses magical power sensing abilities that surpass those of ordinary people, I don’t know much about Estesia-san… Magical power sensing?

”Excuse me, this might be a sudden question, but are you somehow able to sense my magical power?”

 ”…Yes.”

Estesia-san’s voice trembles as she responds, her face pale and sweaty, and I can understand why she’s this flustered.

The Crimson I possess isn’t something that can be detected through magical power sensing, and if it were, it would be ridiculous if my teacher and other mages didn’t notice it.

However, Estesia-san’s magical power sensing abilities are extraordinary, and unlike ordinary magicians who can only sense the attributes of magic and the amount of magical power used, Estesia-san can apparently sense the details of the magic being constructed.

Rumors say her magical power sensing range is tens of times greater than that of ordinary people, so it’s no wonder she can detect Crimson.

”That’s, um… I’m sorry, I don’t know if this is normal or not, but can you somehow suppress your magical power sensing or something?”

”My limits are already being pushed…”

Looking at Estesia-san, who’s on the verge of throwing up and has turned pale blue, I really feel sorry for her.

To be honest, I’ve grown accustomed to having Crimson, and I don’t know how others perceive it compared to other magical powers.

Even though I understood that Crimson had an overwhelming power beyond normal magical power during the experiment the other day, I realized that if someone sensed it as magical power, it would be unbearable to consider its density.

Even though she came to visit, Estacia-san didn’t know anything about Crimson, and I don’t know what she’s doing here. But I think it’s better if I take the initiative to wrap up the conversation and leave

”So, it seems you’re having a tough time, and that’s enough small talk for today.”

 ”No, I’m fine… I’d like to chat a bit more…”

She doesn’t look fine at all, but it feels like we’re about to reverse our positions in 5 seconds.

I had a hunch that she wouldn’t leave without a reason, and it seems that’s the case.

What could be the reason for Pordhail to come all the way to this frontier settlement on the southern edge of the empire? If I had to take a guess, it would be about the interdimensional magic, but…

”I went shopping at the bakery next to this mansion just now…”

 ”What? Ah, yes.”

”The magical tool, Elptis, was being used there, right? …Why would you use such magic?”

I was taken aback by the unexpected question.

Of course, it’s reasonable to think that using Elptis, a dangerous magic, for baking bread would be a concern for a magician, but it’s unlikely that she came here just for that reason.

”There’s no particular reason, but when I tried to rebake the bread, it took a lot of time, so I thought about shortening the time by heating it from the inside as well, and Elptis was the first thing that came to mind.”

”…That’s amazing, but when it comes to Elptis being turned into a magical tool, I didn’t think the permit would be granted so easily, was there some kind of advantage?”

”No, the permit was granted without a hitch, so I didn’t have to go through any trouble.”

”Is that so? I had the impression that the Regulation Bureau would be quite strict about this kind of magical toolization.”

”Well, it’s just that…the Emperor’s single word was enough.”

Normally, when turning a magic like Elptis into a magical tool, one would need to obtain permits from several administrative agencies.

Among them, the Regulation Bureau, formally known as the “Gradigium Empire Magic Regulation Bureau,” has the authority to regulate the use of magic within the empire. They can prohibit the acquisition and use of magic deemed dangerous, as well as the creation of magical tools.

Elptis is also a magic that the Regulation Bureau has prohibited from being turned into a magical tool, and I thought it would be extremely difficult to obtain a permit. However, as it turned out, the application documents I submitted to the various administrative agencies were reviewed by the Emperor himself, and after reading the contents, he burst out laughing and said, “I permit it, grant the permit,” and with that single word, the usual procedures were skipped, and the permit was granted.

As for me, it was a great relief, but because of that, I received a letter from the Regulation Bureau, stating that this was a special exception, which made me feel uneasy.

Incidentally, the first magical tool that was created was taken away by the Emperor, and I hear it’s now being used as a bread-baking machine in the palace.

”Was it so… As expected of His Majesty the Emperor’s favorite.”

”Favorite? What’s that supposed to mean?”

From my perspective, it’s as if the phrase “favorite” is followed by the word “toy.”

I’ve been getting a lot of favors, but I’ve also been getting a lot of unreasonable demands, so it’s not like I’m in a position where everything goes my way just because I’m the Emperor’s favorite.

As I’m thinking about this, Estesia-san throws a question at me.

”Speaking of His Majesty the Emperor’s favorite, then it’s because you became Amelia Pordhail’s disciple with the Emperor’s recommendation, right?”

”Uh, yeah, that’s right. My teacher was told by the Emperor to teach me magic.”

 ”――――.”

The moment I said that, Estesia-san’s eyes became sharp, and I felt a sense of discomfort from her gaze.

Being Amelia Pordhail’s disciple carries a lot of influence, and just the fact that I was taught magic by a great person doesn’t mean I’ve achieved anything significant as a magician myself.

My own achievements are not as a magician, but as a researcher, and I’m in the field of alchemy. Recently, I managed to learn the lost magic of alternate space, which is a notable achievement as a magician, but even if you add that to my reputation, the evaluation of me as a magician is still too high.

That’s why many magicians don’t think it’s funny that I’m being evaluated just because I’m Amelia Pordhail’s disciple, and I’ve received jealous gazes many times. I think Estesia-san is the same.

 ”I understand what you’re getting at. As a magician, I’m second-rate.”

 ”――!”

”Yeah, I did learn magic from my teacher, but I only learned the basics, and I didn’t learn anything significant. I couldn’t even learn one of the magic spells my teacher developed on her own. It’s embarrassing to say this, but I’m not a magician who’s rumored to be amazing.”

As I replied, Estesia-san kept her face down, her entire body trembling with anger.

 ”Don’t say that.”

 ”Yes? What’s wrong now?”

I couldn’t catch the muttered words from Estesia-san, but the moment I asked her to repeat herself, she lifted her face and shouted loudly.

”You, a disciple of Amelia Pordhail, dare to say such a thing! You’re tarnishing Amelia Pordhail’s reputation!!”

 ”…Eh?”

The unexpected words that flew out of Estesia-san’s mouth made me realize everything.

This person wasn’t jealous of my social standing, but rather jealous that I was taught by teacher.

In other words, Estesia Pordhail was an annoying otaku who idolized Amelia Pordhail.

”Ahh, the renowned magician Amelia Pordhail took a disciple? That’s already unbelievable, but what’s with this guy? Why is someone with no confidence at all…”

 ”Uh, sorry…”

”Don’t apologize so lightly, you fool! As Amelia Pordhail’s disciple, you should be more confident!”

 ”Ah, yes! I-I understand!!”

Just as I was about to apologize again, Estesia-san glared at me with an intense gaze that could kill, and I quickly corrected my words.

Until just now, Estesia-san’s face had been pale and green, as if she was about to throw up, but due to her anger, her previous pale complexion had completely disappeared, replaced by respectful language.

Then, Estesia-san continued to talk to me about her mindset as Amelia Pordhail’s disciple, going on and on about it. Before I knew it, the conversation had shifted to how amazing of a magician my teacher was, and I wasn’t released from her storytelling until several hours later, when I received the report that Pordhail had arrived for the second time today.
