Chapter 5 God Couple

Edited by: Kanaa-senpai

”That’s Rena’s house. Do you remember?”

It’s a 2-story house on the main street of the village, with a sign that says ‘Rozen Clinic.’

The letters are the same as what I saw on the blackboard, and even though it’s not in Japanese, I can read this writing too. That fact shows that I’ve been living in this world for 8 years. I guess it’s the same with the language.

”Yeah. I’m still a bit hazy, but… I can accept that those memories are not just dreams, but ‘real memories’ of living in this world.”

Kazumi answers while looking around the clinic building and its surroundings. It seems she was thinking the same thing as me.

 ”I’m home~! I brought Hiroya and Kazumi!”

Rena opens the double doors and walks in.

Kazumi and I exchange glances and nod slightly, then we gather our courage and step through the door. After all, the world beyond the door is full of gods.

* * *

The room feels like a small clinic waiting area. It has a vibe similar to the world we used to live in.

”Welcome. ──Your past life memories have returned, right?”

A man in a white coat, holding Rena, walks over.

He has hair and a beard that look like a golden mane. He’s big and very muscular.

 (Rena’s dad, Mr. Rudolf.)

He’s the only doctor in this village’s clinic. His skills are so good that he must be in high demand even in the royal capital, but his past and why he came to this rural village are unknown. That’s the information I have about him in my memory.

”Let me introduce myself again, okay? ── I’m Rena’s father, Rudolf. I’ve heard about the world from your previous life… in Japan, from my daughter. I’m really sorry about everything.”

He gently set Rena down and squatted in front of us, taking Kazumi’s and my hands and holding them tightly.

”I’ll introduce myself too. I’m Obu Hiroya──Hiroya O’Brien. …It’s really okay about the things from the original world. I’m fine with it.”

I was a bit surprised by the gentle atmosphere as he softly held our hands, which was different from his appearance.

”I’m Kazumi. I’m Kazumi Müller. So, Mr. Rudolf… you were a god too?”

Kazumi asked while placing her other hand on Rudolf’s hand.

”That’s right. I’m sorry for keeping quiet until now. I thought it would just confuse you if I told you before my memories came back, and you might not believe me. I’m in charge of a different world from this one.”

”Kazumie, Hiroya, welcome! The cookies are ready, so hurry up!”

A woman’s voice came from the back room. It was Rena’s mother. What was her name again? Ms. Giselle, right…

”Come on. Let’s have tea time.”

With that, Mr. Rudolf opened the door to the back. At the same time, a sweet aroma spread through the air.

* * *

 (Delicious!)

Freshly baked cookies and probably milk tea.

The snacks that Rena’s mother, Ms. Giselle, served were too good. Before my reincarnation, I didn’t really like sweets that much, but maybe my taste buds are still like a child’s.

”The chocolate cookies are delicious! There was chocolate in this world too!”

Kazumi said with a melting smile, holding her cheeks. Now that I think about it, I used to like chocolate. The drawer of my boss’s desk at work was always full of chocolate.

I was exhausted from my summer rounds when Kazumi pulled out some chocolate from her bag, saying, “We need to refuel!” But the chocolate had melted into a gooey mess, and I panicked a bit.

(I actually liked that clumsy side of her, though.)

Maybe she misunderstood the smile that popped up on my face, because Kazumi smiled back and said, “It’s delicious, right?”

 ”Yeah. It’s super tasty!”

”I’m so glad you like it! Come on, eat more and more!”

Ms. Giselle brought over freshly baked cookies from the kitchen oven.

She was a beautiful woman with long silver hair, just like Rena.

It was like ‘Beauty and the Beast’ with Mr. Rudolf.

”I’m really sorry for the trouble caused by our Rena. But you know… we actually appreciate your reincarnation,” Ms. Giselle said as she took a seat.

”Yeah. Ms. Giselle and I have been busy as gods in our own worlds… We couldn’t do anything satisfying for Rena as her parents or family.”

Mr. Rudolf said, lovingly patting Rena’s head as she munched on a cookie.

”That’s right. Rena decided to ‘take responsibility for you all after reincarnating you’ and live in this world. So, we can start over together as a family. It’s like a dream,”

Ms. Giselle said, happily watching the father-daughter interaction.

”Are you two okay with your work as gods?”

Kazumi asked, cradling a large cup of milk tea in both hands.

”We’ve worked for thousands of years with hardly any breaks. So, we’re taking about a hundred years off,”

 Mr. Rudolf laughed heartily.

”Just like Rena, we created our bodies using only a small part of our original power to come to this world, so we can handle anything that happens in our assigned worlds. Don’t worry.”

 Ms. Giselle-san smiled back.

Yeah. Taking a break is necessary. Nothing beats deepening family bonds, no matter what kind of work it is.

Kazumi looked at the 3 of them with envy.

(In my past life, I failed at marriage… I probably wanted a family like this.)

* * *

”Oh, so you want to become adventurers? Then you should at least not neglect your studies and training until you’re 12.”

When Kazumi and I shared what we wanted to do in this world, Mr. Rudolf finished his milk tea and said that.

”The village school is 6 years long. In this country, you can register as an adventurer starting at 12. That’s just when you graduate. Even though it’s small, this village has a guild branch, and there are just the right monsters for beginners.”

”That’s true. You can gain experience here before heading to a bigger city. Well, according to Rena, disasters in this world won’t happen for another hundred years. So, it seems like a peaceful time will continue, but there should still be plenty of demand for adventurers even in such times.”

 Ms. Giselle agreed.

”Well, on the flip side, there won’t be any hot adventures like ‘saving the world,’ but that’s fine. Let’s enjoy a relaxing adventure together.”

Hearing Rena say that she would join us as an adventurer was really reassuring.

 ”Ah, I have another question…”

I asked about the strange feeling I had since I heard that my age was 8.

 ”Ah, that’s because──.”

Mr. Rudolf explained about the growth period of children in this world, as a doctor.

”From newborn to one year old is the first growth period, which is the same as the world you were in. The second growth period starts around age 6 and continues until about 12. At that point, well… your bodies will have grown to about the level of high school students in your world.”

 ”I see. So…”

”Yeah. Your bodies at 8 years old are like those of upper elementary to middle school students in your past life. Around ten or 11 years old, I guess?”

Mr. Rudolf’s explanation confirmed that my guess about my age was correct.

”By the way, in this world, adulthood is at 15. By that time, the growth period stops, and physical growth due to aging becomes very slow.”

I understood after listening to Mr. Rudolf. In this world, the physical prime lasts a long time.

* * *

”…Well, I should be heading back soon. My dad might be waiting at Kazumi’s house.”

The slanting sun shone through the window, and the living room of the clinic began to glow with a soft orange color.

”Yeah… we should be going. Rena, see you tomorrow!”

We got off the slightly high chairs with a “whoosh.”

”Thank you for the meal. This is the first time I’ve had such delicious cookies.”

Kazumi and I bowed our heads.

”Thank you for taking care of Rena. Here, take this home and enjoy it.”

Ms. Giselle said that and handed us a cute paper package. It smelled sweet like cookies.

 ”Thank you so much!”

 Kazumi happily hugged the package.

We left the living room and headed for the clinic’s entrance.

”Come visit again. You’re always welcome here.”

Mr. Rudolf, carrying Rena on his shoulders, smiled brightly.

”Yes! Okay, Rena, see you at school!”

Kazumi waved at Rena. I also waved while looking up at Rena.

 ”Yeah! See you tomorrow!”

Rena waved back from Mr. Rudolf’s shoulder.

We bowed once more and left the clinic.

* * *

”She seemed like a kind goddess.”

Kazumi and I held hands as we headed home.

”Yeah. They were a really nice family.”

Kazumi smiled a little while looking down.

”…I want to have a family like that…”

Saying that, I squeezed Kazumi’s hand a bit tighter.

Kazumi looked at me in surprise, then smiled shyly. I don’t think her face was red because of the sunset.

”Ah, we should hurry home! If we’re late, we’ll get in trouble!”

I said something bold, but it was a bit embarrassing. I pulled Kazumi’s hand and started walking quickly.

 ”Yeah! Let’s hurry home!”

Together, we ran into the sunset.
