Volume 2 Chapter 22 The Traps Set
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
”Ah, it’s so sad that both the owner of this shop and Rokushoushio-san are such good people.”
We walk side by side on the road to the nearest station after leaving the shop. The drunk customer, Banzushima-san, just won’t stop talking. She keeps going on and on.
”You’re doing fine.”
”Really, it’s terrible. I won’t go to the shop anymore. I can’t quit my job, so I have to figure something out.”
”You’re not coming anymore? If regulars stop coming, the owner will be really down.”
”Who are you to say that? If I get involved with someone like you who seems good at handling things, I know it won’t end well. If something happens, even though we’re the same type of people, you’ll make it look like you’re the ‘normal one’ while I get labeled as the ‘weird one.’ It’s easy for you to do that, right? If I get pushed out of this small community, I’ll have to move to a place I don’t know again.”
She says it with a strange sense of reality. I wonder if she’s had to move several times because her relationships didn’t work out. I feel the same way since I have no family. If things had been worse, I might have ended up like that too.
”What if… I wasn’t like you and was a normal guy? What would you do then?”
Since it seems we won’t meet again, I ask out of curiosity.
”If you were a normal guy? Well… The guys I like usually have girlfriends or wives. So, I become friends with his girlfriend or wife, and I make our conversations about him. I want them to think I know him better. Then, I help him not feel guilty or suspicious, so he chooses to spend time with me instead of her. After a few life advice sessions, without me doing anything directly, they end up breaking up.”
Is she a professional breakup artist? She should consider making that her job instead of being a housekeeper.
”That way, you don’t get caught up in a messy situation, huh?”
”Yeah. Usually, the girlfriend or wife gets angry and they start fighting. If he doesn’t understand what’s happening, he gets really worn out.”
”…And then you comfort that guy, right?”
”That’s what I do.”
What a crazy cycle. If someone gets caught, they have to take some blame, but… being cheated on without realizing it is just too scary.
”Interesting story, right? I’ll tell you anything at this point.”
”…I see. Then, what if you accidentally cross the line and the girlfriend or wife finds out?”
”I’ll just say, ‘I was just asking for advice, and I got drunk… Before I knew it, he attacked me’.”
”Huh!?”
”There’s no proof. Do you know why I always pretend to be on the verge of death?”
I regret asking out of curiosity. The darkness that a drunk customer carries is deeper than I imagined.
