When I turned around, a young-looking person was standing there.
For a moment, I thought, who is this?
But since I was wearing glasses, I recognized her voice as belonging to Aida, the bisexual.
Come to think of it, she wasn’t a Carrier.
I met Aida at the interview for Crimson Bride, when she received support for research funding, and at the registration meeting, but all of these were from a distance or through a mirror, so I couldn’t imagine the young man in front of me as Aida.
”I think you’re Ms. Aida. It seems like you’ve brought a lot of people with you today…are you here for target practice?”
Behind Aida were about 7 young men, some of whom looked like boys.
They must be from the party Aida is in.
”That’s right. Since I had Giulia gather the members under some pressure, if we don’t deliver results, I’ll have to provide her with some service, so I thought we should practice.”
It seems like Aida has gotten used to me; she’s been speaking more casually than before.
After coming back, I heard yesterday that this girl wanted to directly negotiate with Giuliana, the leader of the Hunting Group, to recruit the 3 Gunslingers and 4 Magicians who participated in this Hunting Group for her party.
Originally, Giuliana dismissed Aida’s proposal to create a party concentrating on the Magicians and Gunslingers that she intended to balance, but the next day she reversed her decision and allowed Aida’s party formation.
Upon receiving that report, I questioned Giuliana herself about the suspicious night, but since she hurriedly denied it, I decided to take my time and investigate it more thoroughly next time.
I was convinced just by looking at Aida.
I had heard she is a bisexual, so I suspected she had captured Giuliana during the suspicious night to secure that party formation.
”I see, since Giuliana has been appointed as the Hunting Group leader, Ms. Aida, please do your best. If you’re going to practice now, may I observe?”
”Sir Kent? Uh, yeah. That’s fine. Would you like to try shooting?”
”You’d let me shoot? Then I’ll take you up on that and join the training as well.”
It seems I will be trained alongside the girl who looks like a Magician with a long gun.
The 3 girls who are pistol users seem to be practicing aiming at a target from a short distance away.
”Okay, I’m going to hand you the gun now, but don’t look down the barrel. You can only look down the barrel after you’ve confirmed that there are no bullets in it. Oh, and by the way, there have been some idiots who’ve blown their heads off with bullets that were still loaded, so don’t let your guard down.”
The girl beside me get excited as Aida explains.
I was shown the magic gun that Milly had, but it looked like a cartridge-style musket.
I had envisioned something like that, but the gun Aida handed me had a structure that clearly resembled a full-auto assault rifle.
”Um, is this gun semi-automatic? The one I saw at Milly’s place was a single-shot weapon.”
”What you saw was a basic magic gun, Kent. But my Elizina is different. It will work even if it gets wet in the rain, drops in the mud, or bites the sand. More than anything, it has this rate of fire. With this, you can eliminate monsters in no time!”
Though my title changed from Sir Kent to just Kent, I decided to overlook that for now and hold the gun that was handed to me.
It was significantly heavier and more solid than the bow I had been practicing with earlier.
”To load the first round, pull the cocking lever located above the selector, and the first round will be loaded. After that, it will automatically load itself whenever you fire, as long as the selector isn’t on ‘safe’. Just make sure to check before you pull the trigger, or the bullet will fire.”
I confirmed that the selector was on ‘safe’ before pulling the cocking lever.
With a click, the first round was loaded.
”Alright, I’ll go for a kneeling shot. Place your right knee down and point the toes of your left foot toward the target. Shoulder the stock against your right shoulder. Your right thigh should be opened about 80 to 90 degrees to the gun, and your left elbow should come forward in front of your left knee. And keep your thigh and your left calf as close together as possible. Put as much weight as you can on your left foot, keeping it flat on the ground and vertical from the front, with your toes pointed at the target.”
I tried to take the position Aida described, but I couldn’t quite get it right.
”Is this okay, Ms. Aida?”
”Your left elbow’s positioning is off, Kent.”
Aida fixed my shooting position.
Then, the other children also adjust their shooting postures.
”Okay, then switch the selector near the trigger to ‘single shot’. If a beginner fires the Yeltsina in full auto, it could tip over and be dangerous, so be sure to check.”
I switched the protrusion called the selector that was on top of the trigger from ‘safety’ to ‘single shot’.
””””Okay””””
”So, line up the protrusion at the tip of the gun with the center of the target, and then Kent, gently pull the trigger one after the other. Gently now.”
Following Aida’s instructions, I lined up the protrusion at the tip of the gun with the center of the target and gently pulled the trigger.
Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang!
As I pulled the trigger, the gunfire echoed like a reverberation in my abdomen.
The recoil of the gun was stronger than I expected, and I felt a strong impact on the shoulder where the stock was resting.
”Now then, I wonder if everyone’s first shots hit… Oh, everyone hit the target. As expected, the Elizina I made can hit at this distance even for amateurs.”
While glancing at Aida who was self-congratulating, I focused my eyes on the target 20 meters away.
Sure enough, there were marks almost right in the center of the target where the bullets had penetrated.
I also took a peek at the other kids’ targets, and everyone had pretty much shot through the center.
”Ms. Aida, this is amazing. With this gun, there won’t be any need for close-range jobs anymore.”
”I’m happy that Kent understands the greatness of this gun. But, you know, this Elizina has its drawbacks.”
”Drawbacks? There’s nothing in particular, it’s portable and easy to handle, and the firepower is sufficient, right?”
”It’s the ammunition cost. When you make this girl (Elizina) show her true power, it consumes several times more ammunition than a normal magical gun. Even though the ammo cost is already ridiculously high, it skyrockets along with the firepower with this girl (Elizina).”
Yes, it is certainly true that if the rate of fire increases, the amount of ammunition used will increase.
It’d be nice if it was a party where you could spend money like water…huh?
Wait.
Magicians should be able to create the magic bullets that are the source of ammunition.
So the reason why Aida insisted on this formation was to save on ammunition costs!
”Ms. Aida, you thought the same thing. You’re bringing in a Magician to join the party and making them create magic bullets… Maybe you’re trying to get the pistol wielders to take the magic certification test too?”
”Kent, you’re sharp, aren’t you? By the way, all the girls who use guns have potential; they just don’t have enough skill points yet to acquire [Magic Bullet Creation]. If they keep this up, they’ll learn it soon enough.”
”So, a party of 8 magicians… in that case, magic would… no, that would cost even more.”
”If it’s just making bullets, then if you acquire the [Magician] job and get either the [Gunsmith] or [Gunslinger] job’s [Magic Bullet Creation], you can make special bullets too. It’s cheaper that way.”
Still, I was impressed by Aida, who formed a party of 8 all being magicians and gun users to save on magic gun ammunition costs.
”So, for now, only Ms. Aida can make bullets, right?”
”That’s right, so today we only have 20 shots, which is one magazine. It’s the best I can do in a day to make 3 hundred shots. If 2 or so level up in today’s training, they might be able to make bullets by tomorrow.”
I see, if Aida can only manage 3 hundred shots, then the other girls will probably be able to make even fewer bullets.
Though Aida would want the members to learn to make bullets quickly and start hunting monsters intensely, it seems they need to hold on a bit longer.
After that, I regretfully shot my allocated ammunition in ‘single shot’ mode and then experienced the ‘burst fire’ that shoots 3 shots at the end, concluding the training.
Finally, when we all picked up the empty cartridges, I was intimidated by Aida’s forceful request, “I don’t want to waste even a single empty cartridge, so please look for them,” and I searched the shooting range floor like a hawk, and by the time I found the lost cartridges, the sun was about to set.
When the training ended and I parted ways with Aida and returned to the mansion, the smell of the delicious dinner made by Annabella and the others hit my empty stomach, which had grown hungry from the training.
