Volume 4 Chapter 31 Brave General Garvey
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
Garvey quickly grasped the power of the gunfire and assigned the mid-sized monsters to be exterminated, while allocating the archers to reduce the numbers of the small monsters.
Meanwhile, he had Manon and the others sniper the likely leaders of the swarm to prolong the chaos.
I, watching as if from the sidelines, was astonished by Garvey’s flexibility in using a new weapon.
In a brief moment, he understood the power of Elitzina and directed the gunfire at the mid-sized monsters, the main targets.
Moreover, he recognized the usefulness of Manon and the others’ sniping abilities, instructing them to aim at the monsters likely to become the commanding entities.
”Kent… at this rate, it seems the monsters will soon be exterminated. Just a few injuries and it will be a complete victory…”
Milly, who was watching the battle alongside me, voiced her prediction of the combat outcome.
”Garvey is a smart commander. He uses elite troops as bait to lure the monsters, ambushing in terrain that’s easy to defend. Furthermore, he divides and disorients the monsters to take them out from a distance. This strategy results in fewer direct confrontations, significantly reducing casualties.”
”This is a tactic not found in the central military’s textbooks. It might be a blessing in disguise for Mr. Garvey that he didn’t undergo officer training.”
The central military’s officer school primarily teaches operations based on sheer numbers, so his tactics that utilize terrain are considered unorthodox.
”So, does that mean Garvey struggles with commanding large forces?”
”I’m not well-versed in military matters either, but it seems that as long as he can effectively use competent staff and subordinates, he can manage a large army quite well. With Mr. Garvey’s ability to rally a thousand soldiers without any losses, he should be fine, right?”
Given his ability to inspire the isolated and demoralized soldiers at Felward Fortress, I felt he could easily handle commanding a larger force.
”If that’s the case, I’d like to recruit him as my subordinate. I want him to join the Estfort army as a commander next to Kondrad, Fristoph, and Akebus.”
”That’s impossible, right? What will we do about the defense of Felward Fortress?”
The problem was that if Garvey and his troops withdrew, the now-unmanned Felward Fortress would likely become a nest for monsters, and we would lose the ability to monitor the Abyss Gate.
”Sir Kent, may I suggest we open Felward Fortress to hunters? If we discuss it with the Guild and propose that hunters take on defense duties in exchange for using Felward Fortress as a hunting base, I believe it could work.”
Talia proposed a solution to the problem.
However, Milly shook her head in denial.
”Are there really crazy hunters stationed around Felward Fortress? It would be more efficient to hunt in Godard.”
Talia smirked with a sly expression.
”We just need to appeal to the hunters’ honor and status. The Hunting Group stationed at Felward Fortress would be the strongest and greatest in the Abyss Vena… no, the True Demon Kingdom. Also, if they stay for over 5 years, they could receive the honorary title of knight from Margrave Heido.”
Talia had activated her dark schemes once again.
If we couldn’t lure the hunters with practical benefits, then we should entice them with status and honor, as the sly fox girl suggested.
Dark… so dark.
Talia has turned into a dark girl.
”At the very least, it seems we could attract the ‘Golden Apostles.’ The ‘Silver Wolf’ and ‘Hand of Glory’ might be cautious, but I’ve heard that mid-sized Hunting Groups are competing for hunting grounds around Godard, so they might surprisingly participate.”
”Talia is truly devious. To give hunters status and honor and effectively make them serve at Felward Fortress… that’s a wicked scam.”
”Lady Miriallia, I merely presented a plan to fulfill Sir Kent’s wishes.”
Talia bowed her head to Milly, but it seemed she sensed that her plan would be adopted.
”Well, I think Talia’s plan is effective. However, we should leave a small unit as gate watchers and contact personnel.”
”Alright, let’s adopt Talia’s suggestion. When we return, I’ll contact my father-in-law and the Hunter Guild to discuss the defense agreement for Felward Fortress with each Hunting Group. If the discussions succeed, I’ll have Garvey come to Estfort.”
”But how do you plan to make him your vassal?”
Milly asked how to make Garvey a vassal.
It’s certain that hiring him with a high salary is one option, but that alone feels insufficient.
Using [Charisma] to enslave him is also a possibility, but if it leads to a status of enslavement with ability restrictions, that would be problematic, so I’ll keep it as a last resort.
”Hmm? I was thinking of marrying him off like Fristoph… but I don’t have any blood relatives. Do you know any beautiful, fallen noble daughters among Milly’s acquaintances?”
It’s confirmed that Garvey is also single.
I intended to provide Garvey with a noble status and a beautiful wife.
Being from the royal capital, Garvey was a soldier and, like other soldiers transferred from the royal capital, he was unmarried.
Therefore, I decided to give him a woman who could serve as a wedge to settle Garvey in this land.
”Hmm… a wife, huh… Oh, I know someone. She’s the daughter of an Engineer from the Rakshasa Clan, but I wonder if she’s turned 20 yet. The girl I’m holding as collateral for a debt is working as the manager of a rental mansion in Abyss Vena.”
”A former noble?”
”Yes, she was from the Robert family, a mid-tier noble. After her father got into gambling and racked up a huge debt, both of her parents passed away from illness. The creditors were pressing her, so I helped her out by taking on the debt. After that, I hired her as a manager to oversee her former family estate.”
So, a girl who fell from grace due to debts imposed by foolish parents…
”What about her personality and appearance?”
”Her personality is quiet. For a noble’s daughter, she works seriously. She pays off her debts properly every month. As for her appearance, if it weren’t for the debt issues, I think she wouldn’t have trouble finding a match.”
Her personality and appearance seem to be fine.
For now, I think I’ll set up a match for them.
If they like each other, I plan to act as a matchmaker and help them with various matters.
”Alright, let’s set up a match between Garvey and her. Urgently, let’s call her over. I’ll leave the escort to ‘Black Bullet.’”
”Huh!? Right away!”
”Yeah, immediate action. I’ll have my cavalry send a message to Ane.”
By the time the marriage talks were settled, Garvey had deployed a strike force and begun to eliminate the remaining monsters.
The battle results yielded a significant victory, with a few injuries and a kill count of 4 hundred and 50, as Milly had predicted.
After that, due to time constraints, the match would take place in Godard village.
While waiting for the daughter of the Robel family, I was persuading Garvey to become my subordinate.
However, Garvey showed reluctance to become my vassal.
The reason was my age.
He clearly stated that it was impossible for a 15-year-old brat to have him kneel as a subordinate.
I offered high pay and my concurrent position as the Southern General, but Garvey stubbornly refused.
However, when I mentioned exclusive supply rights to Elitzina, he pondered for a moment but still said it was impossible.
As time passed, 2 days went by, and the day of the match arrived.
”Mr. Garvey. Can you really not become my subordinate? I believe I have made considerable concessions for you…”
”It’s not that Lord Kent is incompetent, but… I prefer not to have a superior… I’m currently sufficient under Margrave Heido.”
”Then, would it be acceptable if I acquired Mr. Garvey as my subordinate through my father-in-law?”
”If such a situation arises, I will resign and leave the military.”
He firmly rejected my invitation with a strong will.
Just when I thought persuasion was impossible, the daughter of the Robert family appeared.
”Your Excellency Kent, it is an honor to meet you. I am Marguerite, the eldest daughter of the Robert family. I have been informed of the situation by Lady Miriallia.”
In front of me stood a delicate girl from the Rakshasa Clan.
She seemed to be the daughter who was a candidate for Garvey’s bride.
Garvey was glued to her, captivated by her sudden appearance.
”Lord Kent? Who is this woman?”
The massive Garvey bent down and whispered to me.
”Huh? Well, I was thinking that if Mr. Garvey became my vassal, I could arrange a marriage meeting with the woman I had in mind…”
Gotcha!
Garvey’s massive hand grabbed my shoulder.
”Ah, no. Mr. Garvey doesn’t want to be my vassal, right? I don’t intend to force you into servitude… let’s forget this conversation…”
”No, no, Your Excellency Kent, you are quite the trickster… you didn’t mention that you would introduce such a beautiful person.”
It seemed Garvey had fallen head over heels for Marguerite.
While trying to appease me, he kept stealing glances at Marguerite.
”Your Excellency Kent… is this tall gentleman the one who will take on the debts of the Robert family?”
I heard from Milly that Marguerite was 20, but her physique was delicate like a boy’s.
With me glasses on, she appeared male, yet she exuded a mysterious charm.
”Ms. Marguerite. That’s a bit too revealing about the situation… Mr. Garvey might be taken aback…”
Gotcha!
A strong hand gripped my shoulder.
”Your Excellency Kent! How much debt does she have!”
”I heard it’s about ten gold coins from Milly…”
”T-ten gold coins? Such a large sum…”
Garvey seemed a bit taken aback by the amount of her debt, but he looked eager to make a proposal.
I decided to throw Garvey a lifeline.
”What if Mr. Garvey becomes my vassal, and in return, I forgive the ten gold coins of debt and welcome Marguerite as my bride?”
”Lord Kent! No, Your Excellency Kent! This Garvey will devote himself wholeheartedly to Your Excellency Kent!”
Garvey was taking the vassal’s oath that he had been so reluctant about.
It seemed Marguerite’s appearance was exactly Garvey’s type.
”Is this condition acceptable for you, Ms. Marguerite? This Mr. Garvey is a commoner, but I believe he will achieve great military feats, so may I have him marry to restore the Robert family?”
”Yes… If Sir Garvey agrees, I would like him to assist in the restoration of the Robert family as my husband… Eek!”
Before her response could finish, Garvey lifted Marguerite in a princess carry and stood up.
”I thank Your Excellency Kent for your consideration. From today, I shall change my name to Garvey Robert and serve as a vassal of Kent Blackdagger. Henceforth, I will raise an heir with my wife, Marguerite.”
”Huh? Right now? Ah, wait, Sir Garvey? What on earth~”
Garvey, still holding Marguerite, disappeared into a nearby inn.
It felt a bit hasty, but I had successfully brought Garvey into my service, so that was good enough.
”Mr. Garvey, please ensure it does not interfere with military duties.”
I made sure to warn Garvey not to overexert himself.
Later that night, the two of them came to the inn where I was staying, acting all lovey-dovey.
It seemed their physical compatibility was quite good.
I thought it might be tough due to their builds, but it appeared Marguerite was doing her best to support him.
”What can I say to express my gratitude for introducing me to such a good partner… I will serve Your Excellency Kent for life.”
”I am grateful to Sir Kent for providing me with a wonderful husband. I will strive for the development of the Blackdagger family alongside my master.”
It seemed Marguerite also took a liking to Garvey.
She even offered to accompany him to Felward Fortress.
I conveyed the plan to transfer the defense of Felward Fortress to the hunters to Garvey and obtained his informal agreement to return to Estfort with his subordinates soon.
Thus, I successfully concluded my hunting trip, made Garvey my vassal, and prepared to return to Estfort.
