Volume 4 Chapter 31 Brave General Garvey

After a while, the two who came near me had awkward expressions on their faces.

”That gunfire earlier was intentional for both of you, right?”

”I got distracted because Sir Kent was flirting with the fox girl, and my shot went off-nya. Since my tail is nice-nya, I’ll lend you Manon’s tail-nya.”

Manon, wearing short panties-style leather armor, turned her backside to show her tail.

I felt a surge of desire to pull her into the carriage and have my way with her, but I decided to hold back due to the many onlookers.

”Manon, I won’t give you a second warning.”

 ”Ah, Sir Kent… I’m sorry-nya. I won’t do it again-nya.”

”Also, make sure to come for tonight’s duty.”

 Manon’s face lit up instantly.

I know I shouldn’t indulge her, but if I had to choose between pleasure or punishment, I would undoubtedly choose pleasure.

And the other sniper was also being defiant.

”Bea isn’t at fault! I was about to snipe when Kent walked in!”

”Beatrice, you should also participate in tonight’s duty. It seems like the beast will go wild, so be prepared.”

 ”Higuu… Kent… Bea isn’t at fault…”

 Beatrice had a tearful expression.

On days when the beast goes wild, we are required to endure intense duties that keep us awake until morning.

”By the way, Talia should come too.”

 ”Eh? What? Me too?”

Talia, completely caught off guard, looked at me with a surprised expression.

 ”Yes, Talia too.”

 ”No way!”

While we were discussing this, Milly and the others succeeded in defeating most of the monsters, allowing us to make contact with the unit that had formed a phalanx.

The small unit flying the Southern Garrison flag turned out to be a reconnaissance team sent by Garvey.

I called the unit’s commander to hear the situation.

”Are you the commander of that unit?”

”Yes, I am leading it. Our mission was to guide the monsters to the designated area under Mr. Garvey’s orders, but… Your Excellency’s unit has scattered them.”

They seemed to be tasked with luring monsters under Garvey’s orders, but my wives had wiped out all the monsters.

”I-I’m sorry. I thought you were in trouble, so I rushed to help but overstepped.”

 The commander saluted, looking apologetic.

”N-No! Your Excellency was merely substituting for Mr. Garvey.”

”I see. By the way, where is Mr. Garvey?”

”He’s just south of here, setting traps in the narrow canyon.”

The commander pointed to a narrow canyon nearby.

The river’s flow had eroded the mountain, creating steep cliffs on both sides, with a road hugging the canyon that had no plains at the bottom.

Garvey had drawn monsters to this place and lured them into the canyon to kill them, which the soldiers referred to as the ‘slaughterhouse.’

It seems that only the elite are always chosen for the dangerous luring teams.

”Using the terrain to fend off the monsters…”

”Yes, Mr. Garvey is skilled at finding suitable terrain for traps along the road. Without his command, Felward would have fallen.”

I decided to ask the commander for guidance to join Garvey’s main force.

”I see… Then, as a sign of gratitude, let’s go greet Mr. Garvey. I apologize, but could you guide me after gathering the materials?”

 ”Y-Yes! I will guide you.”

After finishing the materials gathering, I followed the man’s team toward the canyon with our cart.

* * *

”Your Excellency Kent, it’s a pleasure to meet you. I am Garvey.”

A young man in his thirties bowed deeply before me.

I had joined Garvey, who was stationed with 3 hundred soldiers in the encampment at the canyon’s upper area.

”Mr. Garvey, we are fellow generals. Even if I have the great responsibility of deputy commander, there is no need for excessive formality.”

”…Your Excellency Kent is quite a different person, isn’t he? I thought nobles were particular about appearances and propriety.”

”I’m a rising noble, you see. Casual speech is much easier for me.”

”Then, may I speak in my usual manner?”

 ”That’s fine.”

Garvey, who had defended Felward Fortress for 6 months, was just as I imagined──a towering man, nearly 2 meters tall, with a muscular build.

”Your Excellency Kent is quite generous… Karvai didn’t even hire me as an officer.”

”Given your achievement of holding off a thousand remnants for over 6 months at Felward, I think a position like this is only natural, isn’t it? Isn’t the central army different?”

Garvey answered my question with a grimace.

”Since His Majesty took the throne, the central army has prioritized race over ability. Until my year, anyone could enter the officer academy, but now only those from the Asura Clan or with connections can get in. Because of that, I’ve spent ten years as a poorly paid non-commissioned officer.”

”A non-commissioned officer with the command abilities of Mr. Garvey… what a waste of talent.”

”I’m relieved to be cut off from the central army with this new order. Moreover, the southern army under Margrave Heido has recognized my abilities and prepared a general-level position for me as the commander of the Felward defense team.”

Garvey seems very pleased to be recognized for his abilities.

The position of commander of the defense team in the dangerous True Demon Kingdom, which everyone else shuns, seems to stroke his pride instead.

At that moment, the sound of an arrow signaling the monster’s arrival echoed through the canyon.

 Hwoooosh!

Hearing the signal, Garvey immediately issued commands with a loud voice skill.

”Alright! Scout team, report the number of monsters! All personnel, battle positions! Don’t let any monsters escape!”

”Enemy, about 5 hundred are approaching. No flying monsters, a hundred medium monsters in the center, and around 4 hundred small monsters are accompanying them! The decoy team will soon reach the extraction point.”

”Rockfall squad, once the decoy team crosses the extraction point, block the town street with rockfall! Archers, aim for the central medium monsters after the blockade! Bouldering squad, concentrate attacks on small monsters! Assault squad, stand by!”

The soldiers under Garvey executed his instructions swiftly.

”Mr. Garvey, should we assist? We have magic guns, so we can attack from a distance.”

Garvey pondered my offer for a moment but quickly agreed to cooperate.

”Thank you. Even a single-shot magic gun makes a significant difference. By the way, how did you gather so many valuable magic guns?”

”Our family has skilled gunslingers, so these are homemade.”

”Oh, a homemade gun, is it…”

It seemed Garvey did not accurately grasp the power of the magic guns.

His response after witnessing their power in battle would reveal whether he is a capable commander.

If he proves to be a capable commander, I assume he can appreciate the brilliance of Elitzina.

If Garvey shows no interest in the new weapon Elitzina, I might consider him just an officer-level man.

Thus, I decided to gradually take his soldiers and integrate them into my direct command.

Conversely, if he shows great interest and requests priority deployment, I will list him at the top of the magic gun deployment list and devise a plan to bring him under my command.

”So, Lord Garvey, where will we position ourselves?”

Ane, accompanied by dismounted cavalry, came to ask about the deployment location.

Garvey pointed next to the archers.

”Position next to the archers and fire at the medium monsters. If you could focus on the weakened ones, that would be helpful!”

 ”Understood! Deploying the cavalry.”

Manon and Beatrice, who were beside me, approached with sniper rifles.

”Sir Kent, I’m still not satisfied-nya. We want to join too-nya.”

”Bea also wants to earn a bit more.”

Since both of them hardly contributed in the earlier battle, they seem eager to earn materials by sniping in this counterattack.

”I’m fine with it… but make sure to follow Lord Garvey’s orders.”

”──Oh, the girls have an unusual magic gun. Can it shoot from a distance?”

”Her gun is specially made. I don’t think it will be a bother, so please use it.”

I decided to entrust the sniper soldiers and targeting specialists Manon and Beatrice to Garvey.

This will also serve as a test to gauge his leadership skills.

If he has the talent for adaptability, he will quickly discern the sniper rifle’s characteristics and choose to have Manon and the others snipe the leader of the monster horde to create chaos.

”Lord Kent… I am grateful. I will borrow it.”

”If you don’t mind, we would like to join as an assault team, too. My hunting group members and cavalry are quite strong.”

”Not at all. I cannot ask Lord Kent, our guest, to lend us troops and also borrow an assault team…”

Garvey seemed confident in the counterattack, as he did not borrow any troops from me for the assault team.

”Enemy group! Reached the withdrawal point! Decoy team, confirm quick withdrawal!”

The monster horde that had followed the decoy team into the canyon was stretched thin along the narrow town street.

 ”Rockfall Brigade! Let it go!”

Under Garvey’s command, the stones piled up were rolling down towards the front and back of the monster horde advancing through the canyon.

Suddenly blocked at the exit, the entire monster horde was in disarray.

”Rock unit! Target small monsters! Bow and magic gun unit, aim for the medium ones!”

The stones thrown by the Rock unit failed to deliver a fatal blow to the small monsters, but they succeeded in scaring them.

In contrast, the medium monsters targeted by the Bow and magic gun unit were in a dire situation.

The sight of medium monsters being gunned down one after another by Elitzina’s 20 shots was unfolding.

Among them, Manon and her team’s sniper rifles were shooting through the heads of medium monsters with each shot.

”Wha… this is… amazing… a magic gun that can fire continuously… and Lady Manon’s rifle can hit enemies accurately at this distance!”

Garvey realized the power of Elitzina and the sniper rifles.

With this, there would be no losing.

From now on, he would gauge the commander’s capabilities through his actions.

”Alright, the bow unit will change targets to the small monsters! Lady Ane, can you keep firing until we annihilate the medium ones?”

”Understood! We have plenty of ammunition.”

”I’m counting on you! Lady Manon, aim for the larger medium monsters. Those individuals are usually the leaders. Shoot them down one by one to spread confusion.”

 ”Understood.”
