Chapter 87 The Dark Night of Despair and the Coming of a Desperate Dawn

(The Anclear Forest’s Phantom Waste)
”Master, they’re coming from the southwest and the north, so many of them, meow!” Luna-kun chirped, sounding almost breathless.
”Got it. Luna, let’s go ahead and slaughter them quickly, ne~. Dark Magic: Dark Arrow Cluster!” I replied, my voice light.
A chorus of shrill screams pierced the night, an awful, drawn-out sound that felt like it shredded the air.
”Ugh. Such annoying death throes. Can’t these Discarded Fairies be a little quieter, I wonder?” I muttered, shaking my head.
”That’s impossible, meow. They’re utterly surprised when they rush in, all pumped up thinking they’ve got a meal, only to get wiped out instead, meow!” Luna-kun explained, a touch of glee in the cat-like inflection.
”…Only those who are prepared to be attacked should attack, you know? Didn’t they learn that in robot education?”
”Robot, meow? Is that some new kind of magic tool or something, meow?” Luna-kun questioned.
”Nah. Nothing. Just talking to myself, is all… Inferno!”
A terrible, guttural wail echoed from the darkness.
Tonight is a full moon, a perfect hunting night! They keep swarming toward me. The grotesque and deformed fairies, these creatures, their locations are completely obvious thanks to the eyes of my partner, the Upper Dark Fairy, Luna-kun.
And all I have to do is continuously blast that completely obvious location with powerful magic, and poof! Isn’t it strange? The Discarded Fairies vanish like ash. Oh, by the way, Luna-kun told me why these strange, deformed folk are called Discarded Fairies. Apparently, they’re failed fairies, sad souls who couldn’t be given final rest, or ‘salvation,’ by the Fairy King, and are just continuously worked to the bone.
So, it’s a good thing, really, that I’m stress-busting by exterminating these poor, soulless Discarded Fairies and helping them find peace, right? Talk about extreme convenience!
”Master, they keep coming, so keep ‘saving’ them, meow!” Luna-kun encouraged.
”Yeah, I hear you, Luna-kun! Dark Arrow Cluster!”
I channeled my focus, shooting the Dark Arrow Cluster everywhere around us, putting all my energy into it!
”Good, meow, good! Master, now everyone in the forest can finally pass on… Guyaaaah! Why did you shoot me too, meow! In all the chaos! Masterrr!” Luna shrieked in surprise.
I just kept firing, and sure enough, my attack against the undead hit Luna-kun, too.
”Ah! Sorry! I just got carried away, you know? Don’t disappear on me, Luna-kun.”
”…That was utterly indiscriminate, meow. Tonight’s Master is different, meow.” Luna-kun muttered, sounding a little hurt.
…Wait? Luna-kun’s body looks like it’s turning transparent. Did I almost send them to their final rest, too? Well, Luna doesn’t seem to have noticed, so maybe I should just ignore it. I’d probably get yelled at if I brought it up. Yeah, best to just let it go.
”Nyufufufu… The fool, Oberon! To invite a disaster like the Master into his own domain! Does he want to be destroyed, meow? Nyahfuyi!” Luna-kun giggled creepily, gazing up at the full moon.
Did my magic make Luna-kun go crazy? That unsettling smile, watching the moon… something’s definitely off.

(The Anclear Forest’s Rotting Fairy Settlement)
”Gyaah! My body is dissolving!” “Help meee!” The screams of the disintegrating creatures rent the air.
”Acting Chief Elmia… I’m out of here. This is completely different from what we discussed! Wasn’t it just about catching two kids? And what in the world are those monsters?!” A rough voice demanded.
”…I don’t know,” a quiet voice answered.
”Don’t lie! You’re the Dark Elf representative, aren’t you? You must have been told the whole plan for this capture operation!” he bellowed.
”…Calm down. You’re not even an Elf. If you get too excited, you’ll be affected by their illusions and you’ll start to change, Luminoes,” Elmia Minaphis muttered, her voice hesitant.
”Change, my foot! Don’t tell me such lies! Those are Discarded Fairies—monsters who failed to become true fairies, dammit! I’m the next Chief of the Red Wolf Tribe! There’s no way I’d turn into a monster like that… I mean… I wouldn’t… Hahaha?! …Huh? Why is my body swelling up… Gaaahh!” Luminoes howled as a transformation began.
”…I told you so. I said you’d regret following me. A non-Elf Beastkin¹ like you… you couldn’t endure the Madness of the Night and now you’re going insane,” Elmia muttered, her voice tinged with a tragic resignation.
[GAAHAAAHAA… HAHAHA… HAHAHAHAHAHAA!! ] The monster that was Luminoes laughed, a horrific, echoing sound.
”…I surrender. I didn’t think Luminoes would get this strong… I can’t handle him myself,” she whispered, raising a hand.
”Dark Fire.”
[HAHAHA?! … HAHAHA!! ] The lunatic laughter was cut short, turning into a horrific shriek as the darkness consumed him.
”…The Discarded Fairy that was Luminoes is burning, huh? …Whose work is that?” Elmia questioned, turning to the figure who had arrived.
”With those Elf ears, the brown skin, and the silent way you talk, you must be one of the Hidden Eroins. You’re Elmia Minaphis-chan, correct?” I asked, my tone light.
”…A cute boy? …No, no. A cute girl, right? How do you know my name?” she demanded, her hidden weapon ready.
”The former is correct, Dark Elf Chief.”
Elmia Minaphis is one of the Hidden Eroins who shows up during the Karentisia routes of the open-world RPG, Maidens x Cross-Dressing.
She’s a descendant of Efyldis, who founded the Elf nation, and she’s a Dark Elf. If I remember right, she’s in a terrible situation, being forced into service by the current Fairy King, right?

And now, she’s standing in front of me, full of intense killing intent, watching me closely while holding a hidden weapon.
”…Are you the one who’s been killing all the Fairy King’s Discarded Fairies? He’s seriously furious because most of them have been wiped out,” she muttered.
”‘Killing all of them’? That’s unfair, ne~. I’m only giving final rest and liberation to the poor souls who’ve become puppets of this ‘Fairy King’ you speak of,” I corrected her, my tone flippant.
”…It’s just a way of putting it. Where’s Karen? I need to meet up with her so we can escape together,” Elmia demanded.
Karen? Is she talking about Karentisia-chan? Why would this girl know that Karentisia-chan is in the Anclear Forest?
…Hmm. Could it be that the target of this whole operation wasn’t me, but Karentisia-chan? If that’s the case, I’ll have to completely change my approach.
”Sorry, but I have absolutely no idea who this ‘Karen’ person is. I’m sorry I can’t be of any help, Elmia-chan.”
”…You speak people’s names so easily. You’re a bad, but cute girl,” she replied, her weapon still poised.
”I’m a boy. You shouldn’t make mistakes like that,” I stated.
”…A cute girl, I say. Whatever. It doesn’t matter… I can’t win, but I have no choice but to fight. Otherwise, my clan will be wiped out,” she declared. “Shadow Mist… Hey, Silvia.”
”Silvia… don’t tell me?” I gasped.
”Nyah! That’s right, meow! Elmia! This guy is a cruel, bug-like creep, meow! So let’s kill this little brat and capture her fast, meow! Wild Claw!” The aggressive, cat-like voice shrieked.
”Now this is a surprise. I didn’t expect another Hidden Eroin to pop out, ne~. Wind Magic: All Wind!” I exclaimed.
”Nyah? What’s that, meow? A massive gust of wind, all of a sudden?!” Luna-kun’s muffled voice cried out.
”…M-my body is being blown away!” Elmia protested, her words drawn out.
I launched the two Hidden Eroins, Elmia-chan and Silvia-chan, high up into the trees with the massive gust of wind I created. What a show!
”Nyah? What’s that, meow? A massive gust of wind, all of a sudden?! …Wait! What are you doing, Master! Why are you storing Luna-kun inside your eye, meow?!” Luna-kun’s voice came from somewhere near my head.
”Well, I only need one character who ends their sentences with ‘nyaa,’ you see. Character overlap is a no-go, I think. So, Luna-kun, your journey ends here. Just take a nice, long rest inside my eye, okay?” I explained, my tone final.
”Nyahhh?! No way, meow! Luna wants to be helpful more, meooww…” Luna-kun wailed as I successfully stored the screaming Dark Fairy in my eye.
With that settled, I readied my own weapon.
”Sacred Artifact Activation: Princess’s Silver Blade.”
Now, I wonder how the two of them will react to this, ne~?
”Nyah? You! Isn’t that Sacred Artifact Karen’s, meow?!” Silvia shrieked from the trees.
”That is… the Elven Clan’s treasure. Why do you possess it, cute girl?” Elmia demanded.
”Heh, just as I thought. Seeing this item triggers an event, doesn’t it? Well then, let’s start this right away. The capture of the Hidden Eroins in this spooky tree-sea, without warning.”

Summary:
The chaotic extermination continues in the Anclear Forest as the protagonist, wielding powerful Dark Magic, nonchalantly ‘saves’ the Discarded Fairies from their cursed existence, much to the enthusiastic delight of his companion, Luna-kun. However, a moment of madness or carelessness leads to Luna’s forced—and screaming—removal from the scene. Meanwhile, a tense, fraught confrontation erupts in the Rotting Fairy Settlement as the Dark Elf Elmia Minaphis and the Beastkin Luminoes’ capture mission goes terrifyingly wrong, leading to a shocking transformation and Luminoes’ fiery demise. The protagonist’s arrival sets the stage for a dramatic showdown, as the presence of his Sacred Artifact, the Princess’s Silver Blade, instantly triggers a major game event with the now-revealed Hidden Eroins, Elmia and Silvia.
—
Character Insight:
The Protagonist’s core identity as a ‘villainous heir’ is underscored by his chillingly casual attitude toward mass extermination, viewing it through a lens of self-serving ‘good’ and pure convenience. His spontaneous decision to remove Luna from the party for ‘character overlap’ demonstrates a meta-awareness and ruthlessness that separates him from the standard hero. Elmia, the Dark Elf Hidden Eroin, is revealed to be highly vulnerable and fiercely protective of her clan, forced into a dangerous plot against Karentisia. Her quiet desperation highlights the political and personal stakes in this fantasy yuri RPG world.
—
Behind the Scene:
This chapter is the turning point where the protagonist’s personal ‘fun’ of fighting low-level monsters intersects with the main plot’s machinations. The revelation that the true target of the Fairy King’s forces is Karentisia, not the protagonist, forces a strategic shift. The sudden introduction of two Hidden Eroins, especially one (Silvia) who recognizes the Sacred Artifact and the other (Elmia) who is connected to the deeper elven lore, dramatically raises the stakes, moving the story from a grinding battle into a focused boss encounter, all triggered by a single in-game item.

T/L:
1 [Beastkin (亜人, Ajin)] refers to a non-human race, often with animal-like features, differentiating them from pure Elves or Fairies. Here it specifically refers to the Red Wolf Tribe Successor. ↩
Notes:
• Elmia Minaphis – A Dark Elf and a descendant of Efyldis, the founder of the Elf nation, serving as the acting chief. She is one of the ‘Hidden Eroins’ from the Karentisiaroute of the original game, Maidens x Cross-Dressing. She is stressed from being forced by the current Fairy King to participate in the capture mission, believing Karentisia to be the true target. She tries to maintain a stoic appearance despite her fear.
• Luminoes – The successor of the Red Wolf Tribe, allied with Elmia for the capture mission. He is quickly overwhelmed by the grotesque nature of the Discarded Fairies and loses his grip on reality when the chaotic atmosphere of the forest causes him to transform into one of the creatures he despises. He is burned to ash by Elmia.
• Silvia – Another one of the ‘Hidden Eroins’ from the original game, her full background is not revealed in this chapter, but she is highly protective of ‘Karen’ (Karentisia) and recognizes the Protagonist’s Sacred Artifact. She is easily angered and speaks with an intense, aggressive cat dialect.
