Volume 2 Chapter 21 Preparation

Edited by: Kanaa-senpai

Today is Yellow Day¹, our scheduled rest day. Since the party officially decided to disband during our talk the day before yesterday, I need to focus on my next move.

First, I need a real plan: do I go solo or try to hop between parties? Going solo has its perks-the freedom to set my own schedule is a huge draw. Plus, I can finally fight at full strength, picking activities that actually match my true abilities.

On the flip side, being unnaturally powerful makes me a target for unwanted attention. There’s also the risk of accidents or the unexpected, and the thought of having no backup does weigh on me. (Being alone in this world is a different kind of pressure…)

Joining another party would be safer, but if I’m with ordinary locals instead of Reincarnators, our power levels will probably fall out of sync within a month. Constantly cycling through teammates sounds exhausting. Besides, my “Ordeal”² skill makes it difficult to get close to women anyway.

As for the guys… well, if I act normal, we usually get along fine. But the more people I team up with, the higher the risk of someone discovering my real strength. Since it takes time to reach the “Strongest” rank, I’d rather keep my cards close to my chest.

As for the Reincarnators, only the all-female parties are left, and they aren’t likely to take me in. We aren’t exactly on friendly terms. I also have zero interest in joining the Hero Party-even if I was the one they weeded out during the initial Class selection. Ultimately, I’ve decided that going solo is the lesser of two evils, even if the thought of grinding through a cave dungeon alone is a total downer.

I briefly considered traveling, but I scrapped the idea for a few reasons. I’ve grown quite close to the Gale Party, and if I leave now, some other vulture might swoop in and take my place. I absolutely cannot let that happen. It would also be painful to part ways with Regina-san. I’ll need one more big push to convince her to retire and follow me. I’m almost at the point where I can snag a date with Dietlinde, and Clarissa-san is giving off good vibes too. Plus, there’s the monthly “reward” I have to handle for Ilse.

Because of all that, I’m building my future around a solo foundation.

* * *

During the morning, I decided to test various weapons in preparation for my solo run. It’s not uncommon to run into enemies like Golems where weapon compatibility is everything, so I need to be versatile. As long as I can unlock the Skills, my proficiency will increase even if I don’t use them in every battle. If I can learn them on my own, I should.

I headed to the smithy and bought a spread of forged steel gear: daggers, two-handed swords, gauntlets, greaves, spears, hammers, axes, maces, scythes, whips, bows, fans, and throwing knives. They all have their pros and cons. Some fighting styles are fundamentally different from a sword, so getting the hang of them will take effort. It’s likely just because the Skill levels are low, so I’m not sweating it yet. Now that I’ve actually acquired the Skills, I’ll let time handle the rest.

”The Hero Party is expected to return in about two weeks,” Mercedes said. “They’ll stay for a week before heading back out on the road.”

”I see. Thanks for the heads-up, as always,” I replied.

I was having lunch with Mercedes to get my monthly scoop on the Hero Party’s movements.

”I shouldn’t say this too loudly, but the members other than Lord Shouta and Lord Ren are causing so much trouble that the knights escorting them are reaching total burnout,” Mercedes said. “They’re strong in a fight, certainly, but their behavior is… problematic.”

”Man… sorry about that,” I said.

Just as I thought-those four idiots are nothing but a headache. As a fellow countryman, it’s honestly embarrassing.

”Is your search for a boyfriend going any better, Mercedes?” I asked.

”Ugh, not at all. Oh, wait! Kenta-san was in your party, wasn’t he? I should give him another shot!”

”Hate to break it to you, but I think he’s already seeing someone,” I said.

 ”Wh… What did you say…?”

Mercedes stood up with a heavy clatter, frozen in shock. (My condolences…)

”Wait, not yet! The position of ‘Second Wife’ should still be open!” Mercedes cried.

”I don’t think so. He didn’t seem interested in anyone else but her,” I said.

He hadn’t said it in so many words, but with his personality and that “pure-hearted” vibe, there was no way he was looking for a harem. It was cruel, but I had to put her out of her misery.

”Why is it that all the good men are taken so fast!?” Mercedes groaned.

 ”Don’t ask me,” I said.

Is she really saying that to me? I’m the one suffering from the “Ordeal” effect. People tell me I lack delicacy sometimes, but she’s just as bad.

 ”What about Makoto-san…?”

 ”He’s got a crush on Ralph-san’s daughter. Besides, he’s a lolicon. You aren’t his type,” I said.

 ”Takuya-san…?”

”He’s following the person he likes. He’s into the ‘Yandere’ type, so you’re a no-go there, too,” I said.

”Gah! Fine, what about Kazuya-san? Even if he only cares about 2D girls…”

”He’s leaving on a trip soon,” I said.

Mercedes slumped over, looking genuinely pitiful. Wait-she didn’t mention my name once.

”By the way, why wasn’t I on your list?” I asked.

”I dunno? Just because?” Mercedes replied.

Was that a question? In the beginning, she used to shut me down instantly, claiming she had zero interest and felt no spark. Maybe things are shifting a little.

”Fair enough. Even if I find a good guy, I’m not introducing him to you,” I said.

”Daisuke-san, you’re the best! So handsome! So cool! So please, just introduce me to one good man! I’m begging you!”

Her reaction was so predictable I could only manage a wry smile. What a waste of a beauty.

* * *

When I was considering my next steps, the fact that I wasn’t close with the Reincarnator girls was a major roadblock to joining their party. We chat, sure, but not enough for them to let a lone guy into their group. If they were desperate, maybe, but counting on that is a losing bet.

Still, it’s a bit lonely this way. I’ve been trying to think of a way to get on their good side. They also have the 10x XP cheat, so they aren’t struggling for money. Their dungeon progress seems to be on par with “Leemans”. For modern Japanese people, they’ve got some serious mental fortitude. Maybe that was a condition for their reincarnation.

That’s all well and good, but it means I can’t use a “Heroic Rescue” to get close to them. I need a hook… something they can’t kill or get on their own.

Wait. Didn’t Rei-san say before that “cosmetics are way too expensive”? I remember the “Working Women Party” all jumping on that topic. Makeup is definitely pricey here. If I could use alchemy to make some, would they be happy? Since I’d be giving them something their Alchemist, Aya-chan, can’t make, I’ll just claim I “found it in a treasure chest.” High-end Japanese-style products take too much work and is risky to fail, so I’ll start with the basics and see how it goes.

* * *

 ”Hello, Clarissa-san,” I said.

 ”Ah, hello, Daisuke-san,” Clarissa replied.

Clarissa’s smile was as radiant as ever today. Her uniform cape hid her upper body, but her curves look soft. Since I was at the library for the afternoon, I decided to look up cosmetic recipes and processes.

I could go to a beauty shop and use Appraisal³ to peek at their methods, but stealing trade secrets is a low move. Clarissa will figure it out eventually, so I’ll just give her the finished product as a “keep-quiet” bribe. That should work… right?

My research didn’t turn up the secrets of specific brands, but I found the basics. Let’s see… a recipe for milky lotion: purified water (or base water), xanthan gum, propanediol, emulsifying wax, disinfectant alcohol, and an oil of choice.

Purified water is easy with Water Magic. I can manage the other ingredients with Alchemy. I don’t know the required Skill level, but it shouldn’t be an issue. Maybe olive or citrus oils would be best? The process itself isn’t nearly as hard as getting the ingredients.

”Cosmetics? That’s a bit unusual for you,” Clarissa said.

”The Reincarnator girls seem to be having a hard time, so I thought I’d try making some. I’ll give you some too, Clarissa-san, once it’s done. But in exchange…”

”You want me to keep it a secret?”

”Exactly. I appreciate you being so quick on the uptake,” I said.

 ”I understand. It’s a promise, okay?”

”Yeah. I’ll definitely bring you some,” I replied.

”Hehe. We commoners can rarely afford cosmetics. I’m really looking forward to it! ♪”

Clarissa, who rarely initiates conversation before closing time, was practically glowing after my promise of the bribe. She went back to her post, her hips swaying with every step. In this world, makeup is for nobles; it’s a luxury item she doesn’t own. I didn’t expect her to be this happy, but if it helps me get closer to her, I’m all for it.

At this rate, I bet Dietlinde, the Gale Party, Regina-san, and even Mercedes would be thrilled. Ilse probably won’t care, but I’ll give her some anyway. Maybe something for her ears or tail would be better.

As for Yuko… I’ll pass. I’m not looking to raise her favorability, and since it’s a luxury item here, there’s no point. Sakura from the “JK Party” is the same, but if I exclude just one person in a group, it’ll be too obvious and might tank my reputation. It’s a drag, but I’ll give her some too.

I spent the rest of the time researching skincare like cleansing oil, toner, and sunscreen, as well as base and point makeup. There are so many types! With all the recipes and methods, it’s more than a normal brain can hold, so I’ll let “Mental Memory” do the heavy lifting.

That’s when I realized I need tools. Metalwork is out of my league, so I’ll use Earth or Wood Magic. For the brushes, I’ll use hair from Horn Rabbits, boars, or bears. But how do I give these out? A full vanity box? Giving them individual pieces might look weird…

I kept digging until closing time, then headed out. After walking a bit, I spotted Dietlinde again.

 ”Good evening, Dietlinde,” I said.

 ”Good evening, Daisuke-san,” Dietlinde replied.

She was such a cool beauty. I wondered if she’d like makeup.

”You always look stunning, Dietlinde. Do you use any makeup?” I asked.

”No… such expensive things are out of my reach,” Dietlinde said.

Hmm. She didn’t say she wasn’t interested, so maybe she does want it? Wait. Looking at her now, she seemed a bit worn out.

”Have you been busy lately? You don’t look so good…” I said.

”No, I’m fine. …If you’ll excuse me,” Dietlinde replied.

Shoot, was that a sensitive subject? I felt bad. I’ll make sure to give her something to help with fatigue along with the makeup. That should perk her up.

* * *

Dinner was a date with the Gale Party. Since it’s June and the heat is picking up, I chose a place famous for refreshing summer dishes.

 ”Cheers!” I said.

 ”Cheers!” the group replied.

While enjoying the food-which definitely lived up to the hype-I dove into conversation with them.

”Thanks for coming today. This makes twenty times, doesn’t it?” I asked.

”You’re as stiff as ever,” one of them said.

”Has it really been that many?” another added.

”Even though this is supposed to be a reward for you, Daisuke, I feel bad having you pay for us every time,” Ines-san said, her voice tinged with guilt.

”I’m paying because I want to,” I replied. “Please, don’t worry about it.”

Ines-san still looked concerned, but I meant what I said. Paying for a meal with a beautiful woman wasn’t just a “necessary expense”-it was a genuine pleasure. (I’m open to arguments, but that’s my stance.)

”I’ve talked it over with the other two,” Ines-san continued. “We were wondering if we could increase the frequency of our meetings? We’re starting to have some financial leeway now, so we’d like to be the ones to pay from now on.”

”I appreciate the thought, but we agreed on how often we’d meet. Really, don’t worry about the money. I’m doing fine.”

”But then… it doesn’t really count as a reward, does it?”

”That’s not true at all,” I said. “I’m sorry for dragging you three along all the time, but just being able to go on a date with the three of you makes me happy.”

 ”W-well, I… I’m having a good time, too… hau…”

 ”Ines-san, really…” Sylvie-san giggled.

”Fufu, she’s quite adorable, isn’t she?” Juliet-san added.

Ines-san turned bright red and looked down at her feet. As always, the gap between her appearance and her personality was cute. At the very least, it seemed like she was enjoying herself, and the other two didn’t seem to be here against their will. I suppose my hard work had paid off.

While we were at it, I decided to feel out the Gale Party regarding their favorite scents. “Does everyone have a particular smell they like?” I asked.

”I’m not a fan of anything too strong,” Sylvie-san said.

”I think I prefer scents that feel like the forest,” Juliet-san noted.

”I like the scent of flowers,” Ines-san added.

(Hmm, their tastes are pretty divided. I can make something tailored to each of them, but it’ll be hard to claim they’re “dungeon-sourced”. Then again, I don’t have a better excuse, so I’ll just have to stick to my guns.)

Gathering the preferences of everyone in the Working Women Party and the JK Party would be a massive, suspicious undertaking. I decided I’d just produce a variety of fragrances and let them choose for themselves when I handed them out.

* * *

”Today was great. I had a wonderful time,” I said as we stepped outside.

”That’s our line, Daisuke. Thank you, as always,” Ines-san replied with a soft, radiant smile that felt almost divine.

”That’s right! Thank you very much,” Sylvie-san chirped, her cheerful grin giving her the air of a woodland fairy.

Juliet-san was as blunt as ever, but she’d started smiling more lately. “Yeah. Thanks,” she said, and I could tell she meant it.

 ”Oh hey, if it isn’t Daisuke-kun! ☆”

I turned toward the voice. “Hm? Oh, Rei-san.”

We had run into Rei-san and the rest of the Working Women Party right in front of the restaurant.

”Oho, a date with three beauties? You’re quite the player,” Rei-san teased.

”Hahaha, I wish I could say this was a date I earned through my own charms,” I joked.

 ”What’s that supposed to mean?”

I explained the situation with the Gale Party and how these dates were technically my “reward.”

”I see, a ‘reward,’ huh?” Rei-san said, a mischievous glint in her eye. “I hope you aren’t forcing them into anything… scandalous. Big sister might have to punish you! ☆”

 ”S-scandalous?! That’s… that’s indecent!” Aya-chan cried out, clearly mortified.

”Aya-chan, you’re getting ahead of yourself again,” Manami-san sighed.

”That’s right. We should hear what they have to say first,” Misaki-san added calmly.

Rei-san’s teasing had clearly given Aya-chan the wrong idea; she seemed to be a bit of a prude. Since there was no benefit to being misunderstood, I decided to clear the air. “I’m not doing anything like that. Right, girls?”

”That’s right,” Sylvie-san said. “We just have dinner and go shopping.”

”Yeah,” Juliet-san added. “No lewd business.”

”Indeed,” Ines-san confirmed. “He treats us with the utmost respect, and I truly enjoy our time together.”

”Well, then! Glad to hear it!” Rei-san laughed.

”Ooh, so Daisuke-dono is a true gentleman after all?” Mai-san asked.

”I figured Daisuke-kun was fine, but it’s a relief to hear it from them directly,” Yumiko-san said.

I gave a wry smile at Rei-san’s satisfaction. I was a bit curious about Mai-san’s opinion of me, but I figured it was fine. It was nice to know Yumiko-san trusted me.

”Are you all out for a party dinner?” I asked.

”That’s right,” Rei-san said. “Aya-chan is going to be apprenticed to an Alchemist soon.”

 ”I thought so.”

”Yes… I’m sorry about what I said earlier,” Aya-chan murmured, looking away.

”Don’t worry about it. It happens. So, is the party going to be five people from now on?”

”Actually,” Rei-san said, “Manami and I are retiring, too! ☆”

 ”What?! Really?”

I was shocked. Three of them were retiring? Was the party disbanding? I couldn’t help but wonder if there was a chance I could join an all-female party now. “Why the sudden change?”

”I’m going to open a ‘Maid Cafe’! ☆” Rei-san announced.

”And I’m opening a ‘Cat Cafe,’” Manami-san added. “It’s a bit off the main road, but it’s a nice location.”

 ”Wow… that’s impressive.”

”Daisuke,” Ines-san interrupted, “what exactly are a ‘Maid Cafe’ and a ‘Cat Cafe’?”

”I’ve never heard of those,” Sylvie-san added.

The concepts didn’t exist in this world yet. I gave them a quick explanation. “A Maid Cafe is a place where the staff dresses in maid uniforms to serve customers, making them feel like visiting nobles.”

”I see. That sounds like it could be popular,” Juliet-san said.

”And a Cat Cafe is a place where you can eat while playing with cats,” I continued. “They were very popular back home for people who couldn’t keep pets. Since Manami-san is a Tamer, I’m sure the cats will be perfectly behaved.”

”As long as they’re calm, it sounds like a lovely idea,” Sylvie-san said.

”I live in an inn and can’t have a cat, so I can definitely see why people would go there,” Ines-san added.

It seemed like the business models would work here. Given their background as working adults, they’d likely done their research.

”I always wanted a job where I could make a living through cosplay,” Rei-san explained. “Now I can finally do it! ☆”

”And I just wanted a quiet life with my cats,” Manami-san said. “I didn’t like seeing them get hurt in battles, so I wanted to retire early.”

”I see. What about the others?”

”Well, Mizuki from the JK Party is retiring as well, so we’re planning to merge the two groups! ☆” Rei-san said.

”I heard Mizuki-chan is joining the Temple,” Misaki-san added.

”Having seven people is a bit much, but we don’t have many other options!” Mai-san said.

”We’ll move as a group when we have to, but we’ll probably split into smaller teams to keep things manageable,” Rei-san concluded.

So Mizuki was out too. Maybe the Temple had scouted her, or maybe it was her own choice. Either way, a seven-person party definitely didn’t have room for me. Even if I gave them the cosmetics, it looked like I’d be staying a solo player for a while.

 —

 Summary:

Daisuke prepares for solo life after his party disbands by training in multiple weapon types and researching alchemy-based cosmetics. He gathers intelligence on the troublesome Hero Party from Mercedes and navigates social connections with various women in the city. He ultimately decides to use handmade cosmetics as a ‘hook’ to gain favor with the female Reincarnator parties.

Daisuke enjoys a ‘reward’ dinner with the Gale Party, navigating Ines’s guilt over him paying. They run into the Working Women Party, leading to the revelation that several key members are retiring from adventuring to open modern-style cafes. Daisuke realizes his hopes of joining their parties are fading as they merge into a larger group.

 —

 Trivia:

 - Daisuke has an ‘Ordeal’ skill that specifically hinders his relationships with women.

 - The Hero Party is notorious for behavioral issues among its members (excluding Shouta and Ren).

 - Mercedes is specifically looking for a boyfriend among the Japanese Reincarnators.

 - Cosmetics are considered extreme luxury items restricted to the nobility in this world.

 - Reincarnators in this world possess a ’10x Experience’ cheat skill.

 - Mental Memory is a specific skill Daisuke uses for rapid learning and data retention.

 - Ines is technically a warrior but has a very feminine, goddess-like smile.

 - Daisuke is using ‘dungeon-sourced’ as a cover story for his alchemical creations.

 - Manami is a Tamer, which she plans to use to manage cats in her cafe.

 - The ‘JK Party’ refers to ‘Joshi Kousei’ (High School Girls), a common trope from Daisuke’s original world.

 - Mizuki joining the Temple might imply her having high magic aptitude or religious devotion

 —

 Character Insight:

Daisuke’s move toward alchemy and cosmetic production shows a shift from pure combat to strategic social manipulation. He recognizes that while he is strong, social ‘hooks’ and bribes are necessary to navigate a world where his skills make him a social pariah or an anomaly.

Daisuke shows a mix of gentlemanly behavior and practical calculation. He genuinely enjoys the company of the women but is also constantly looking for ways to integrate into a party or secure his livelihood through alchemy.

 —

 Behind the Scenes:

The author uses ‘Yellow Day’ as a designated rest day, suggesting a color-coded calendar system common in some fantasy world-building.

The introduction of Maid and Cat cafes is a classic Isekai trope where the protagonist introduces modern Japanese culture to a fantasy world to stimulate the economy.
