Volume 5 Chapter 3 Progress

Edited by: Kanaa-senpai

The following day was Yellow Day¹.

My partner last night had been Ines. Since we had just been holding each other and kissing moments before, I could still recall her softness vividly without even needing to rely on my Mental Memory² skill. I’m not exactly trying to rush things, but I really want to become one with Ines soon.

Today was Yellow Day, a scheduled rest day. My itinerary was packed to the gills: a date with the Gale Party, a trip to the library, giving a cosmetics gift to Dietlinde-san if I managed to run into her, a dinner date with Clarissa-san, and finally a session with Regina-san via Daydream (BSS). Every single one was important, so I had to give it my all. Since it was a day off, I wanted Liese and Camilla to take a break as well, so I explained my plans to them as soon as they woke up.

 ”Master…”

”Camilla, that’s why I’ll be out all day. Can you stay here and keep house with Liese?”

Camilla kept her grip on my sleeve, her head trembling in a tiny, pitiful shake as if she were on the verge of tears. This was a problem. I obviously couldn’t take her on a date, but I couldn’t just leave her like this either. She had been fine for short stretches with Gerta the day before yesterday or Ines yesterday, but apparently, an entire day was out of the question.

”Camilla, you mustn’t,” Liese said, her voice firm. “You cannot interfere with Master’s schedule.”

 ”Yes…”

Admonished by Liese, Camilla looked dejected and finally let go of my clothes.

”It’s alright, Liese. I’m the one who told Camilla I wouldn’t let her feel lonely,” I said. “Tell you what-I’ll hold you tight until the very moment I have to leave. And if I come back a little after noon, we can go to the library together until the evening. Does that make it okay?”

 ”Is that… true?” Camilla asked.

 ”Yeah, I promise.”

 ”Okay… I’ll wait with Liese-san.”

”Liese also, thank you. It helps that you’re thinking of me,” I said.

”No, it is only natural,” Liese replied.

I held Camilla until the very last second before I had to depart. She was on my lap even while I ate, and she kept a hand on me somewhere while I was changing. She looked lonely at first, but she was finally smiling by the time I finished fussing over her.

I’m glad she cheered up, though I had to sprint the rest of the way so I wouldn’t be late. Liese clearly worries about Camilla, and they usually get along great. Her harshness earlier was likely due to the intense slave education she’d received at the Grünewald merchant guild. I wish she’d learn to relax a bit, but that might be asking too much.

Meanwhile, Liese was apparently planning to spend her day off practicing with her spear. She’d been fired up ever since yesterday’s duel. She really is a serious, hardworking girl.

* * *

I met the Gale Party at the usual fountain square.

”Sorry to keep you waiting,” I said.

 ”Good morning! ♪” Sylvie chirped.

 ”Morning, Daisuke,” Juliet added.

 ”Good morning, everyone,” Ines said.

The three of them greeted me in their own ways. Juliet’s tone was blunt, but she was the first to speak up. I wonder if she’d actually been looking forward to this? Since it was the hot season, she was wearing a light, fluttery shirt with three-quarter sleeves and a miniskirt that sat a good six inches above her knees. A very generous amount of skin-thank you, world.

Sylvie was all smiles as usual, but her voice seemed a pitch higher than normal. She must have been in a great mood. She was dressed in a plain white blouse and a creamy yellow skirt that ran a bit longer, with cute floral embroidery along the hem. It had only been twelve hours since I’d parted with Ines, but I was still genuinely happy to see her.

Today she was in a long one-piece dress similar to Sylvie’s, but on her, the “impact” was on a totally different level. It was almost scandalous. She gave me her usual gentle smile, though I thought I saw some slight dark circles under her eyes.

”Ines, did you actually get any sleep last night?” I asked as we started walking.

”I-I’m fine! I slept properly, okay?” Ines replied.

”She was staring into space until late at night, occasionally squirming and groaning,” Juliet said.

”Juliet! You didn’t need to mention that!”

I guess they share a room. Ines was flustered by Juliet’s whistleblowing. Suspicious…

”Ines? Honestly, did you sleep?” I asked.

 ”R-Really, I did!”

 ”How many hours?”

 ”About… three.”

 ”Ines…”

”Well, I couldn’t help it! I was lonely after we said goodbye, Daisuke!” Ines huffed, though her honesty was incredibly adorable.

 ”You’re hopeless… Come here, Ines.”

 ”Ah-“

I took her hand and pulled her into a light hug. There were people around, but we’d stepped to the side, so we weren’t in the way. Besides, nobody really cares about a hug in this town. Feeling Ines’s scent and her soft warmth put my mind at ease.

”Does that help with the loneliness?” I asked.

”Honestly… you’re far too bold, Daisuke,” Ines said, hugging me back despite her embarrassment.

”I can stop if you hate it?”

”I don’t hate it. Thank you.”

We’d shared a heated kiss at the end of our date just yesterday, so the air between us was already turning sweet. As we gazed at each other, I felt Ines’s grip tighten just a little.

”Ahem. You’re on a date with all of us, so don’t forget we’re here,” Juliet interrupted, her eyes narrowing.

 ”S-Sorry! I just… when I was hugging Daisuke, I just kind of…”

I’d been so lost in flirting with Ines that I’d triggered Juliet’s jealousy. Bad move. I needed to give Juliet and Sylvie their due.

”Sorry for leaving you out. You guys want in on this too?” I asked.

 ”I’ll pass on-” Juliet started.

”Since you’re offering, I’d love to try! ♪” Sylvie chirped.

”Yeah. It feels great to hug from the front,” Ines added.

I’d meant it as a joke, but Sylvie was surprisingly game. Juliet looked stunned, but Ines just took it in stride. Ines stepped aside, and with a soft thud, Sylvie hopped into my arms. She was tiny-the quintessential Elf. But even in her slenderness, there was a supple softness to her, and she smelled like a crisp forest. Since she’s about the same height as Camilla, her head only reached my chest.

”…I see. So this is what it’s like. It’s very grounding,” Sylvie said.

”Right, Sylvie? I feel the same way. Doesn’t Daisuke just feel… right?” Ines asked.

Sylvie pressed her pointed elven ears against my chest, wrapping her arms around my waist and squeezing tight. She was bolder than she looked. While the two of them discussed the merits of my “hug-ability,” I just stood there, not really sure what to make of it myself.

”Since we’re doing this, Juliet, why don’t you give it a go?” Ines suggested.

 ”…Fine.”

At Ines’s prompting, Juliet shuffled over. It was a hesitant, uncharacteristically shy movement. This time, Sylvie made room, and Juliet stepped in for a frontal hug. She isn’t quite at Ines’s level, but Juliet is still very well-endowed; I could feel that distinct squish as she pressed against me. (Thank you, for the second time today.)

”Well, Juliet? How is it?” Sylvie asked.

”Pretty relaxing, isn’t it?” Ines teased.

 ”…It’s not bad,” Juliet replied.

She wasn’t being honest, but that was a glowing review for her. I gave her a little squeeze as a thank-you, and she squeezed back. Her words were prickly, but her cat ears were twitching and her tail was wagging-she was clearly in a great mood.

(So, about the “three of us” idea… did you think about it?) Ines whispered to Sylvie.

(Yeah. Looking at this… I think Juliet-san would be okay with it, right?) Sylvie whispered back.

They were whispering and glancing at Juliet. Something was definitely up. But since it was those two, I knew they didn’t mean me any harm, so I could just relax.

* * *

Our destination today was the Maultasche History Museum. It featured a bronze statue of the founding king and focused heavily on the history of wars-specifically the victories. While tensions were currently high with the Empire, the museum showed that there had been plenty of conflict with the Dukedom in the past as well.

”Juliet, Sylvie, you’re both from the Dukedom, right? Were your hometowns close together?” I asked.

”Not really,” Juliet replied. “I grew up in the Ducal Capital. Sylvie’s from the Elven Forest.”

”That’s right,” Sylvie added. “I can’t tell you exactly where my village is, but it’s deep in the woods. There aren’t any other towns or even main streets nearby.”

So elven village locations are top secret. I’d love to visit one, but I wonder if it’s even possible.

”I’d love to visit sometime, but I’m guessing outsiders are strictly banned?” I asked.

”Pretty much. Unless something catastrophic happens, they almost never grant entry to non-elves,” Sylvie explained.

”Man, that’s a bummer. I really wanted to see a World Tree or something.”

”Hehe. If it’s you, Daisuke-san, I bet you’ll get permission eventually,” Sylvie said.

”I hope so. And I’d love to see your home in the capital too, Juliet.”

”…It’s not interesting. There’s nothing to see,” Juliet said.

The moment I brought up her home, Juliet’s face clouded over. Did I hit a nerve? As I was wondering what I’d said wrong, Ines tugged on my sleeve and leaned into my ear.

(Juliet’s family situation is… complicated. They don’t get along at all.)

 (Got it. Thanks.)

I’d been careless. Not everyone has a happy home life.

”Sorry, Juliet. That was insensitive of me,” I said.

”…It’s fine. I’m not mad. Sorry for making things awkward,” Juliet replied.

Juliet clearly didn’t want to bring the mood down, so she apologized back. It was just a topic she wanted to avoid. I’ll have to ask Ines for the details later so I don’t step on that landmine again.

* * *

For lunch, we hit a pasta place. The meat sauce was a bit pricey, but it was incredible.

”So, you didn’t really have a hard time in yesterday’s duel, did you?” Juliet asked suddenly.

 ”What makes you say that?”

”Well, we saw you right after the fight, didn’t we? You didn’t look tired in the slightest.”

”Now that you mention it…” Sylvie mused.

”Ines-san was so worried about you, too! ♪”

”I was not! I mean… I was, but…!” Ines turned beet red again. It was sweet to know she’d been that concerned.

”I’m glad you were looking out for me, Ines. But regarding the fight with Gerta-I actually did struggle,” I said.

”Really? Because knowing you, you probably fought with some ridiculous handicap, like ‘don’t leave a scratch on her,’” Juliet countered.

She’s too observant! I need to change the subject before this gets dangerous.

”Oh, that reminds me! I gave some to Ines yesterday, but I’ve got cosmetics for you and Sylvie too.”

”Wow, talk about a blatant subject change. Fine, whatever,” Juliet muttered.

”Cosmetics? That sounds expensive,” Sylvie noted.

Juliet was still giving me a skeptical look, but she let it slide. The fact that I beat Gerta was public knowledge, but if people realized I’d won while holding back significantly, it could cause issues. I just hope no one else is as sharp as Juliet. Sylvie seemed interested in the gift but wasn’t exactly jumping for joy. Elves are naturally beautiful, so maybe they don’t have much of a makeup culture?

”Do Elves not use makeup much?” I asked.

”Not really. We might use it for rituals or festivals, but almost never in daily life,” Sylvie explained.

 ”Makes sense. What about Beastmen?”

”I shouldn’t speak for all of us, but generally less than Humans do. Perfume is a hard ‘no,’ though. It messes with our ability to track and scout,” Juliet said.

”Ah, right. That’s why you hate strong smells.”

”That’s part of it, but mostly we just find them overwhelming. I’m a cat-type, so I can manage, but dog or wolf-types? It’s probably torture for them.”

 A sharp nose is a double-edged sword, I guess.

”I kept your tastes in mind. For Juliet, I got stuff that’s as fragrance-free as possible. For Sylvie, I picked a woody, forest-scented set.”

”Daisuke went out of his way for us,” Ines added. “You should both take them.”

”Thank you very much. I’ll make sure to only wear it while we’re in town so I don’t bother Juliet-san on our adventures,” Sylvie said.

 ”…Thanks,” Juliet added.

With Ines’s nudge, Sylvie accepted with a smile. Juliet was blunt as ever, but her tail was wagging happily as she took the gift. Maybe I should ask Rei-san to teach them how to use the stuff? Or maybe Misaki-san? I’ll have to think about it.

My dates with the Gale Party… three more to go. I’d say things are moving in a very good direction.

 —

 Summary:

Daisuke begins a hectic ‘Yellow Day’ rest day, starting with soothing Camilla’s separation anxiety before meeting the Gale Party for a museum date. The group shares intimate physical contact through hugs, reinforcing their growing bond. A visit to the history museum reveals tension regarding Juliet’s past in the Ducal Capital and the secrecy of Elven lands.

 —

 Trivia:

 - Juliet’s reaction to the Ducal Capital suggests a high-stakes or traumatic backstory that will likely be a future plot point.

 - Sylvie and Ines whispering about Juliet being ‘okay with it’ hints at a collaborative harem agreement or a ‘three-person’ plan being formed behind the scenes.

 - Daisuke’s concern over being ‘too sharp’ suggests he is consciously manipulating his image as the ‘strongest’ while maintaining a façade of struggle

 —

 Character Insight:

The Gale Party (Ines, Sylvie, Juliet) has transitioned from professional allies to intimate partners, as evidenced by the ‘hug’ sequence where they compare Daisuke’s ‘hug-ability.’ Ines shows significant vulnerability regarding her loneliness, while Juliet’s ‘cat-type’ instincts (twitching ears/wagging tail) betray her blunt verbal facade.

 —

 Lore And Worldbuilding Context:

The Maultasche History Museum introduces the geopolitical history of conflict between the Empire and the Dukedom. Elven lore is expanded with the mention of the ‘World Tree’ and the extreme isolationism of Elven villages.

 —

 TL Notes:

The term ‘Maultasche’ is a German culinary reference (dumpling) commonly used in Japanese fantasy naming conventions. ‘Yellow Day’ functions as a civic rest day within the world’s color-coded time system.

 —

 TL Notes:

1 Yellow Day: A specific rest day in the world’s color-coded calendar system.

2 Mental Memory: A system skill used by the protagonist to recall sensations or information.
