Volume 5 Chapter 30 Heaven’s Net
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
After finishing Liese’s experience grinding, I went to pick up Camilla and Ilse. As usual, Camilla came charging right at me the moment I arrived.
”Master!”
The way she nuzzled her head forcefully against me was adorable. When I patted her, her fluffy tail started whipping back and forth at high speed.
”Everyone, thank you for your help,” I said.
”No problem,” Yumiko-san replied. “Liese-chan is one thing, but I’m relieved to see you’re taking proper care of Camilla-chan and Ilse-chan too, Daisuke-kun.”
”…Satisfied,” Ilse added.
”Camilla-chan and Ilse-chan were both so cute,” Rin said.
”They really were,” Hina agreed.
”I certainly learned a surprising new side of you, Daisuke-dono!” Misaki-san chimed in.
”Right? Daisuke-san, do you have a minute?” Nanami asked.
Yumiko-san was smiling softly; she had likely heard all about our daily lives from the girls. Rin’s reaction felt a bit off, but I suppose she had looked after them in her own way. Hina was remarkably composed, though it was a bit disappointing that I couldn’t catch her inner thoughts.
Misaki-san wore her usual pleasant smile. Even after hearing whatever Ilse told her, she remained unfazed—she really was a big-hearted person. Mai seemed to have gotten an earful too, mentioning my “unexpected side.” While her attitude didn’t change much, she watched me with curious eyes, and her face looked a bit flushed. (Maybe she’s more of a novice at this than she looks.)
The problem was Nanami. She pulled me aside, away from the others.
”I didn’t let Hina hear because it’s a bit much for her, but Daisuke-san… you’re actually involved with Ilse-chan¹, aren’t you? Even though she’s younger than us.”
”Well, yeah. That’s right,” I admitted.
She had clearly heard it from Ilse, and since it was the truth, I couldn’t deny it. I was at least grateful she was being considerate of Hina’s innocence.
”So Daisuke-san really is a lolicon. Better watch out, or a girl like Nanami-chan will be the next target since I’m technically still high-school age.”
Her words were dangerous, but her expression was playful. She was definitely just teasing me. Since I was also with Mia, I wasn’t sure if I was strictly a “lolicon,” but it certainly wasn’t as if I only liked little girls.
”I’m… pretty sure I’m not. As you know, she’s an Ines. Regardless of my preferences, I think you’re a charming woman too, Nanami.”
”Oh? Going with a straight-faced compliment? That’s points for you. But Nanami-chan isn’t a cheap date, you know?”
”I know,” I said.
If I could win her over that easily, I wouldn’t be struggling so much. It was just an opening jab.
”Well, it’s not like I’d hate the idea, so keep at it,” Nanami said.
”I plan to,” I replied.
Her way of speaking was unique, but that wasn’t a bad reaction. Maybe she actually liked me a little? Nanami was hard to read, in a different way than Rin.
When I returned to the group, Camilla was being squeezed in another hug by Rin. It seemed to be a farewell greeting. Misaki-san was doing the same with Ilse; they were apparently taking turns. I couldn’t help but feel a bit jealous seeing them buried in the chests of the “Big Breasts Trio.” I had heard the party’s thoughts, but I needed to check in with my own girls.
”Camilla, did you get to talk to everyone much?” I asked.
”Yes, everyone was very kind to me,” she answered.
”What did you talk about?”
”Everyone… mostly while I was sitting on Rin-oneechan’s lap, I told them about you, Master, and what we do in the dungeon.”
I stole a glance at Rin, who looked immensely satisfied. (Shouldn’t I be getting some kind of reward from Rin for this?) On the other hand, Ilse looked exhausted.
”How about you, Ilse?”
”They were nice, but they asked so many questions… I’m just tired of talking.”
I figured as much. Since I didn’t want Hina overhearing the details, I decided not to press for more. I made plans to drop them off again next week and decided to head home for the day. I still had one more farming run to do on the sixteenth floor myself, though.

According to Dietlinde-san, monster sightings were gradually increasing on the outskirts of the Royal Capital. Personally, I hadn’t noticed much of a change inside the dungeon. Since it was mostly just Goblins near the Capital, it wasn’t something that required a high-ranking adventurer like me. It was a good time for D and E-rankers to earn money, so unless I received a direct nomination, I didn’t plan on interfering.
If Orcs or anything stronger appeared, the danger would spike and might affect the Gale Party, so I’ll wipe them out then. They spawned infinitely anyway; a temporary culling wouldn’t make them go extinct. I also heard that because of the monster surge, I might start getting direct nominations as a B-rank. I didn’t really want to work too far from the Capital, but I suppose it would depend on the reward. It wasn’t like I was desperate for connections, so I might just turn them down.

Two weeks had passed since the dungeon reopened, and the Adventurer’s Guild had finally returned to its usual pace. I figured it was about time to take Isaac, the kid from the Dismantling Department, to that “good place” I promised.
”Isaac, are you free tomorrow night?” I asked.
”Yeah, I can finally get off work at a normal time, so I’m good,” Isaac said.
”Great. As promised, I’m taking you to a ‘good shop,’ so make sure you finish up early.”
”Wait, you were serious?”
”Dead serious,” I replied.
Isaac was a bit hesitant about me picking up the tab, but compared to my current income, it was pocket change. Honestly, even for the two of us, it wouldn’t even be ten percent of what I made in a single day. Once I explained that—while keeping the exact numbers vague—Isaac finally agreed.
I was still debating where to take him, but I decided not to scout a new brothel. If it was a hit, it would be a waste to only go once, and if it was a miss, it was just a waste of time and money.

After speaking with Isaac, I was walking through the guild hall when I bumped into Henriette and the Department Head of Request Mediation. (Ugh. Maybe I can still run for it.)
”Ah, Daisuke-san! Good evening!” Henriette called out.
Tch, she spotted me. I had no choice but to deal with it.
”Good evening, Henriette-san,” I said.
”You can just call me ‘Henriette’!” she chirped.
She was really pushing it. I felt like I needed to get away before things got messy.
”Daisuke, was it?” asked the Department Head.
”Yeah,” I replied.
”From what I can see, a mere adventurer like yourself seems to be quite cozy with Henriette—a member of my staff and my subordinate.”
Department Head Randolph spoke down to me with an air of immense superiority. I felt a strange pressure coming off him; was he using an Intimidation skill? If so, that was incredibly scummy. Without Fear Resistance, a person could be forced to agree to anything he said. It didn’t work on me, and I had no intention of getting close to Henriette anyway. Besides, he kept saying “my guild,” but it wasn’t his. His arrogance was palpable.
I had heard about him from Isaac and Appraisal Department Bruno. Department Head Randolph was a relatively small man with prominent blue stubble, but he was apparently a bear-type beastman. He wasn’t a noble, but he was from a branch of the “Be-whatever” family. I had zero interest, so the name slipped my mind. He was an “elite” in this world—a graduate of the Royal Academy.
Isaac had complained that the guy did no work but couldn’t be fired. He claimed non-essential tasks were “work” while his actual responsibilities were dumped on subordinates or other departments. It was a total nuisance. Even the strict Guild Master Roswitha had warned him countless times, but he always talked his way out of it.
He called me a “mere adventurer,” but a B-rank is supposed to have some social standing. Either he didn’t know who I was, or he thought a B-rank wasn’t worth his time. Regardless, he seemed like a headache. I decided to give a vague answer and leave.
”No, it’s not like that…”
”I wonder. Aren’t you just using your position as an adventurer to try and hit on Henriette?” Randolph sneered.
He didn’t listen to a word I said. It was a total false accusation. If you swapped “adventurer” for “Department Head,” he’d be describing himself.
”Now, Randolph-san! There’s nothing like that going on between me and Daisuke-san. You being jealous is just so cute!” Henriette said.
”Haha, well, Henriette is so lovely I just couldn’t help getting worked up, hahahaha!” Randolph laughed.
”Calling me lovely? Oh, thank you!” Henriette replied.
(What am I even watching right now?) I was stuck between a woman I had zero interest in and a middle-aged creep who was thirsting after her. I wished they’d just go off and do this somewhere else. Also, I noticed Randolph made every other staff member call him “Department Head,” but he let Henriette use his name. It was disgusting. I had reached my limit.
”I’m in a hurry, so if you’ll excuse me,” I said.
”Hmph,” Randolph grunted.
”Let’s talk again soon!” Henriette called out.
Seeing them only confirmed how trashy they were. It was the most unpleasant encounter I’d had since I ran into that couple, Otto and Sakura. It was infuriating, but punching Randolph wouldn’t solve anything. Those two had clearly bought plenty of grudges from others; they’d get what’s coming to them eventually. Heaven’s net is vast and wide; its mesh is coarse, yet nothing slips through.

I figured I’d finally run out of surprises for the day, but as I headed for the exit, I spotted two people I didn’t see often. A-rankers Rutger and Ursula. In my time at the Capital, they were the only other A-ranks I knew of. We weren’t friends, but I saw them occasionally.
I hadn’t seen them since the “Dungeon Upheaval”—maybe they were on hiatus like the Yamato Nadeshiko Party? They usually operated as a pair, but that had to be rough in the deeper floors. They likely had a full party normally.
Rutger was likely a demon-kin, standing about 180cm. He had long white hair with blue tints and pale, almost bluish skin. Judging by the sword, he was a swordsman. His title was “Flame Sword.” I wasn’t sure if he was a Magic Swordsman or just had a magic blade.
Ursula was likely a dragonewt, around 170cm. She had medium-length dark brown hair and brown scales. One of her horns—the signature of her race—was snapped off. She carried a mace, but her massive shield was what really drew the eye. Definitely a tank. Her title was “Great Shield.”
I’d overheard them talking once or twice. Ursula seemed like the silent type, but Rutger definitely gave off narcissist vibes. Once again, I only watched from a distance. It was best to make a quiet exit before I got dragged into any more nonsense.

He plans a future reward for himself and a night out for his guild acquaintance Isaac. The chapter concludes with a tense, unpleasant encounter with the arrogant Department Head Randolph and the introduction of two mysterious A-Rank adventurers.
—
Trivia:
- The increasing monster sightings near the Capital suggest a looming external threat despite the dungeon’s surface-level stability.
- Randolph’s use of Intimidation skills on adventurers hints at deep-seated corruption or power-tripping within the guild hierarchy.
- The broken horn of Ursula and the narcissistic demeanor of Rutger serve as early personality markers for the high-rank power balance in the city.
- Nanami’s ‘high school age’ comment serves to ground the character ages and Daisuke’s internal moral compass regarding his growing harem
—
Character Insight:
Daisuke’s relationship with the Yamato Nadeshiko Party is solidifying, moving from pure business to personal banter. His interaction with Nanami shows a mutual, albeit playful, acknowledgement of attraction. Conversely, his repulsion toward Randolph and Henriette highlights his preference for genuine connections over ‘trashy’ manipulative office politics.
—
Lore And Worldbuilding Context:
The chapter introduces the ‘Ines’ race, noted for their youthful appearance. It also expands on the Guild’s internal structure, revealing that even high-ranking administrators like Department Heads can be incompetent or protected by noble ‘elite’ backgrounds.
—
TL Notes:
The proverb ‘Heaven’s net is vast and wide; its mesh is coarse, yet nothing slips through’ (Tenmou kaikai so ni shite morasazu) is a classic idiomatic expression regarding karma and justice, chosen to reflect the chapter title.
