Volume 7 Chapter 20 Investigation Start

Edited by: Kanaa-senpai

I was running a bit behind schedule, but I decided to keep plugging away at it. Since I’d called it quits at a reasonable hour last night, I felt great. My body was in peak condition, and I woke up feeling completely refreshed.

”Morning, Cassandra. You’re up early as usual,” I said.

 ”This is normal,” Cassandra replied.

Her words were as sharp as ever, but was she softening up just a little? Maybe the results of my efforts to heal her-both in body and soul-were finally starting to show. (I’ll have to make sure to give her a thorough ‘healing’ session tonight as well.) The inn’s breakfast featured a local specialty cheese, and I noticed the furrow between Cassandra’s brows relaxed slightly as she ate. (She’d probably be even cuter if she actually smiled, but that’s still a tall order for now. I’ll keep working on it.) Once we finished breakfast, I parted ways with Cassandra to meet up with Kazuya.

”Morning, Kazuya. Morning, Tria,” I said.

 ”Morning, boss-ssu!”

 ”Good morning, Daisuke,” Tria added.

Starting today, we were headed out to investigate the area around the lake. Depending on the situation, I wanted to make some progress on the culling as well. The sooner we finished, the sooner we could go home. Nights with Cassandra weren’t bad, but they couldn’t compete with the lovey-dovey sessions I had with my actual lovers. I didn’t think Cassandra would thaw out that much in just a few days, and I had no intention of leaving the girls back in the Capital alone for long.

(Speaking of which, I wonder what the ‘favors’ from the six of them will be? It’s been three days, so they might have decided by now. Ines loves being pampered, so maybe it’ll be something like that? Despite having such incredible breasts, she’s the most innocent of the bunch-that ‘gap’ is just irresistible. I can’t predict Sylvie; I have a feeling she’ll demand something pretty intense. She really took a liking to that shaving play from the other day. Juliet is another mystery, but since she’s shy, it might be hard for her to say it in front of others. Maybe she’ll be more honest if I ask her one-on-one. At the very least, she’ll come looking for affection. Alright, I’ll hear everyone’s requests in a private room.)

(Liese’s will probably be meat-related. We’re getting closer, but she doesn’t seem to have enough affection to want a real relationship yet. She just loves meat more than anything. Camilla will probably want to sleep together. I’ve probably made her feel lonely during this trip, so I’ll spoil her to her heart’s content. Taking care of Camilla is a form of healing for me, too. Ilse is a lock for a ‘reward’ session. No doubt about it. She has the personality of a young boy, but she’s an absolute horny brat when it comes to s*x. As for Meta, who became my lover during this request, I’ll treat her the same as Gale’s Trio. I’ll ask her what she wants later.)

”Something on your mind, Daisuke?” Kazuya asked.

”No, I was just thinking about my lovers back in the Capital,” I replied.

”Heh… isn’t it a lot of work having so many-ssu?”

”Not really. Over here, you rarely get flak for having multiple partners,” I said.

In this world, having multiple lovers or wives was perfectly normal, and the women didn’t seem to have any hang-ups about it. I’d confirmed this with all my lovers and casual partners, as well as Regina-san, Clarissa-san, and Dietlinde-san, so there was no mistake. (Ninja Takuya’s lover is apparently a Yandere¹, so there are exceptions, but still.)

”Speaking of which, Kazuya, won’t you eventually be able to summon more than just Tria at the same time?” I asked.

”I guess so-ssu. What do you think, Tria?”

”Increasing the number of Kazuya’s servants is desirable for safety,” Tria replied.

Tria didn’t seem to have any feelings of jealousy or resentment about her ‘rivals’ increasing. Since Kazuya was the one who imagined and set her personality, he probably had a bit of a harem fantasy himself.

”Daisuke, we’re heading out,” Captain Emily said.

 ”Right,” I replied.

”And that’s Kazuya, right? I heard about you from Cassandra,” Emily said.

 ”Long time no see, Cap-ssu!”

”It is an honor to meet you. I am Kazuya’s servant, Tria. I look forward to working with you,” Tria said.

”Nice to meet you. I’m Emily. Honestly, Tria, you don’t look like a Summoning Skill at all,” Emily said.

 ”I’m flattered, ma’am-ssu,” Tria replied.

Even Captain Emily was surprised by Tria. Even to me, knowing the truth, she looked like a perfectly normal human. It was either a testament to Kazuya’s power of imagination or just the sheer weight of his obsession.

The lake was a little over an hour’s run from the village. It was about ten kilometers away, but since it was mostly uphill, it would have taken about three hours to walk. It was situated away from the main highway. Halfway there, the path led into the forest, but there was a road of sorts, so it wasn’t too difficult to navigate.

”Kazuya’s actually keeping up,” I noted.

”Of course-ssu! My growth rates might be low, but my Level is high enough to compensate,”

 ”Fair point,” I replied.

No matter how low your growth rates were, if your Level went up, your stats followed. He could probably beat Liese and the others with his bare hands.

 ”Daisuke, welco-” Mercedes started.

”Here,” I said, cutting her off.

”Thank you! I knew I could count on you, Daisuke!” Mercedes said.

”Ah, it’s the ‘Disappointing Beauty’ Knight-ssu,” Kazuya noted.

Mercedes was, as expected, in a foul mood, but I shut her up quickly by handing her some sweets. If this fixed her attitude, it was a small price to pay. (But then again, this is Mercedes…) Even Kazuya remembered her; she was just that high-impact.

”Calling me ‘disappointing’ is rude! I was certainly a ‘Beautiful Girl’ until recently! Besides, I am currently a ‘Graceful and Dignified Beauty of a Knight’!” Mercedes shouted.

”At least, that’s what she claims. What do you think, Tria?” I asked.

Tria was modeled after the legendary King of Knights. What was her verdict?

”…I believe Kazuya’s evaluation is the correct one,” Tria said.

 ”Right?” I said.

 ”Totally-ssu,” Kazuya agreed.

”How cruel! Wait… Daisuke, who is this?” Mercedes asked.

Did Cassandra not tell her? She was strict about work, but she wasn’t the type to play petty games like that.

”Didn’t you hear from Cassandra?” I asked.

”The Vice-Captain is scary, so I’ve been staying out of her sight!” Mercedes replied.

 ”Good grief…” I sighed.

She really is a dummy. What would she do if it were an important update?

”Fine, I’ll introduce her. This is Tria, Kazuya’s Summoning Skill,” I said.

”Oh, I see! Kazuya is a ‘Fantasy Summoner,’ after all. And wow, she blends in even better than you do, Daisuke!” Mercedes said.

”That last part was uncalled for,” I replied.

Since Mercedes knew Kazuya and had seen other Summoning Skills before, she accepted it without a second thought.

”By the way, Kazuya, do you have a lover?” Mercedes asked.

 ”Tria is my lover-ssu.”

 ”Kazuya…” Tria whispered.

”No, I mean a normal person. Like, a real human,” Mercedes clarified.

A bit of a romantic tension started to drift through the air, but Mercedes didn’t care and just barreled right through it.

”I don’t have one of those-ssu,” Kazuya replied flatly.

”Oh! In that case, I, Mercedes, would like to volunteer-“

”I’m not interested in real-life women-ssu,” Kazuya interrupted.

 ”Gah!” Mercedes yelped.

It wasn’t exactly revenge for her interrupting us earlier, but Kazuya shut her down instantly. His stance had been consistent from the start, so the chances of Mercedes succeeding were slim to none. Even Elves-who were practically ageless by our standards-were outside his “strike zone.”

Mercedes took the shock hard, slumping into a heap on the ground in total defeat. However, we were still on the move. I couldn’t just leave her there, so I picked her up and carried her in a princess carry. She might be a total letdown, but a girl’s still a girl.

”Heartbreak is so painful… Daisuke…” Mercedes moaned.

”What is it? Did you finally fall for me-“

”Give me more sweets…” she whispered.

 ”……”

My heart actually skipped a beat for a second because her eyes were all watery, but yep, that was Mercedes for you. There was never any chance of the mood actually becoming romantic.

”Thank you! Munch, munch… This really is the best! Nom, nom…” Mercedes said.

”Glad you like it,” I replied.

I guess sweets really can heal a broken heart. I learned something today.

As we got closer to the lake, Water Elements began to pop up here and there.

”Alright, we’re starting the investigation,” Emily said. “Daisuke, I want the adventurers split into two teams. Your team will go with me and circle the lake counter-clockwise. The other adventurer team will go clockwise with the other group.”

 ”Got it,” I replied.

We took a break on a small hill overlooking the lake to prep for the mission. I’d heard the general plan yesterday, so I already had a proposal ready. Moritz is a B-Rank adventurer, so it’s better if he’s on the other team. I’m sure it would be fine, but I don’t want Meta getting harassed, so I’ll keep the Mirage Party with us. Actually, that’s my main priority.

”Our group and the Mirage Party will be one team. Golden Dragon’s Breath and Her Fünf will be the other,” I suggested.

 ”Understood,” Moritz said.

”Yeah,” the leader of Golden Dragon’s Breath replied.

 ”Got it,” another added.

The party leaders all agreed. No problems there.

* * *

We split up to circle the lake counter-clockwise, investigating and culling as we went. We were supposed to meet up on the far side of the lake to share info, then finish the loop back.

It was probably because Kazuya and I were on this team, but the counter-clockwise knight group was mostly the younger recruits. Both Captain Emily and Cassandra were on the clockwise team. Maybe because I’ve been so friendly with Cassandra, everyone else was too intimidated to talk to me. (It’s not like she’s scary or anything…)

Even though we were split into teams, we generally moved in our own parties. The knights had about ten people, so they were moving in two groups. From the side closest to the lake, the order was Leemans (me and Kazuya), then the Mirage Party, then the knights. The outer edge had to travel further, but there are fewer elements, so it shouldn’t be an issue.

I could have handled the scouting, but I don’t want to show off too much in front of the Order. I’ll leave it to Kazuya’s servants. I felt like we’d already overdid it by beating Cassandra and one-shotting Moritz. By the way, Tria isn’t a scout; she’s a swordswoman. Given Kazuya’s own low combat prowess, using Tria as a scout would have been a bad move anyway.

”Kazuya, can you pull out a scout-type servant?” I asked.

”On it. I can’t have Tria out at the same time, so it’s ‘see you later’ for a bit. See ya, Tria-ssu.”

 ”Yes, Kazuya,” Tria replied.

Kazuya and Tria said their goodbyes with a handshake. (Very wholesome.) Tria vanished, and in her place appeared a girl in red dress-armor and someone in a full-body black suit with a skull mask… probably a woman. The masked one was the scout, and the girl in red was Kazuya’s bodyguard. The girl in red had a massive, uniquely shaped red sword I’d definitely seen somewhere before.

As we pushed forward with the investigation, we learned that the closer you get to the lake, the higher the concentration of Water Elements and the stronger the individuals. The weaker ones were spread out, but the heavy hitters stayed near the water. There might be a boss-type element somewhere in that lake.

Also, they were way more aggressive than the ones in dungeons. They don’t run, they don’t recover, and they don’t seem to care about how much MP they were burning. Basically, their AI was set to “full-frontal assault.” The visibility wasn’t terrible, and with Mana Sensing and Presence Detection, we were fine. But without those skills, a surprise attack in this thick forest would have been lethal.

It was definitely too dangerous for civilians. If these things spilled out onto the road, travel would be a nightmare. We kept heading toward the meeting point, clearing out anything that gets in our way.

 Summary:

Daisuke and Kazuya join the Knights for a lake investigation. Mercedes gets hilariously rejected by Kazuya and comforted with sweets. The team identifies highly aggressive Water Elements near the lake, suggesting a potential boss encounter.

 —

 Trivia:

 - Daisuke considers s*x as ‘healing’ for himself and others.

 - Kazuya is a ‘Fantasy Summoner’ who explicitly rejects ‘real-life’ women.

 - Tria is modeled after a ‘King of Knights’, likely an Arthurian reference.

 - Water Elements in this region don’t behave like dungeon mobs; they burn MP recklessly.

 - The ‘Disappointing Beauty’ tag for Mercedes refers to her personality/gluttony ruining her good looks

 —

 Character Insight:

Cassandra is showing small signs of ‘dere’ (softening), while Kazuya’s obsession with 2D characters remains his defining trait. Mercedes continues to be the comedic relief of the party.
