Martina: Successor to the Chancellery. The Whip of Maultasche.
Vera: Maid to Martina-sama.

Within Class-specific and Race-specific Skills, there are certain abilities—like the Beastman’s Beastification¹ or the Dragonewt’s Dragonization²—that are learned automatically once a specific level is reached. It is only natural to assume that Daisuke’s skills were similarly unlocked by his level.
”I suppose the only way to get more answers is to hear it from the man himself,” Martina said. “For now, let’s just be satisfied with what we’ve learned.”
”What else? You clearly have other reasons for this, don’t you?”
”I’ve also confirmed that his cooking skills are remarkably high,” Vera replied. “It is likely he possesses a Unique Skill that provides growth effects for abilities outside of combat.”
”…So, you know this because you actually ate his food, then?” Martina asked.
”Yes. It was exquisite,” Vera said. “However, my primary objective was gauging Daisuke-san’s ability. It wasn’t because Elke told me it was a honey-glazed fruit tart so divine she’d never tasted anything like it. It also wasn’t because she said I would definitely love it, or that I’d regret it for the rest of my life if I didn’t try it.”
”…Hmph. Fine,” Martina replied.
I hadn’t quite understood why Vera would go out of her way to visit him, but as I mentioned, she has a massive sweet tooth. She definitely heard the rumors from Elke, the maid to Princess Rosemarie, and decided she had to have it. Vera isn’t the type to let a chance for sweets slip through her fingers.
”I brought a few back with me. Would you care for some, My Lady?” Vera asked. “If you have no need for them, I shall take responsibility for disposing of them myself, so please do not hesitate to say so.”
”…You just want to eat mine too, don’t you?” Martina asked.
”Yes. I won’t deny it,” Vera replied.
”Fine. Do as you please,” Martina said.
”Thank you, My Lady,” Vera replied.
The way Vera’s expression softens ever so slightly shows just how thrilled she is to snag my portion. It is a rare look for her—one you almost never see these days. Well, whatever.
”You didn’t suggest recruiting the man just because you wanted a lead on more sweets, did you?” Martina asked.
”My recommendation is based purely on his merit, though I cannot deny the possibility of such a secondary benefit,” Vera replied.
”…Hmph. Very well. I’ll let it slide this time,” Martina said.
As Vera said, his high level of ability is undeniable. An all-rounder has countless uses. If the situation results in Vera being happy, I suppose I can live with it. It was an unauthorized recruitment attempt, and he turned her down, but her instincts weren’t wrong.
”It’s a bit of a shame he refused, but you showed good judgment by not forcing the issue,” Martina said.
”Indeed. Trying to blackmail a Transferee is a losing move,” Vera replied.
The most infamous example of a forced Transferee gone wrong was the Poisonous Count Castel Territory Incident³ in the Dukedom. That was caused by the Count’s utterly atrocious—honestly, incomprehensible—behavior. If you make an enemy of a Transferee, they will pay you back eventually. Coercion might work in the short term, but eventually, even brainwashing fails. Granted, a total reset usually takes a few decades.
* * *
There are reasons I rely so heavily on Vera, a commoner, as my right hand. First is her sheer competence. She’s exceptional at intelligence gathering, analysis, negotiation, and paperwork. She’s a rare find, even if her personality is a bit distinct.
Second, she’s a top-tier Idiot Detector. I can smoke out fools just by watching how they react to her. Vera and I look strikingly similar—the brown hair, the slightly sharp gaze, the slender build. It’s only natural; Vera is my father’s illegitimate child. It seems my father got her mother—who was also a maid in the Marquis Gilman household—pregnant around the same time my own mother was expecting.
Because of the succession laws, she was never officially recognized. But perhaps out of some fatherly affection, she was raised alongside me as my attendant from the time we were small. Vera hasn’t been told the truth, but I suspect she’s figured it out.
The Idiot Detector is easy to use. I just have her sit in on meetings as a server and assistant. She doesn’t actually need to serve, but she insists on it. Any noble or merchant worth their salt notices the resemblance and chooses not to react. They know there’s no profit in prying, and they realize that insulting someone I clearly value is a moron’s move.
Those a step below notice and keep stealing glances at her. They have eyes, so they aren’t totally useless, but they lack discipline. They’re usable if trained, but that’s their ceiling.
The bottom-dwellers don’t notice at all. Most Imperial nobles and officials fall into this category. For a place that screams about meritocracy, they’re so corrupt that most are complete duds. The meatheads in the Dukedom are about the same.
And then there are the ones who actually ask, “My, don’t the two of you look alike?” They’re beyond help. What do they think they’ll gain by asking? They’re just unimaginative fools.
The third reason is that she’s the only one who gives me the unvarnished truth. People often mistake me for a tyrant because I’m ruthless with failures, but I’m not stupid. I know how vital a critical opinion is. The problem is finding someone brave enough to give one. Since I have to play the Whip, it’s hard for me to act humble. Since Vera is family, that barrier doesn’t exist.
Lastly, there’s the bond of blood. We’ve been together since we were children; it’s only natural to care for her. Even I have a heart. She’s bold and occasionally exasperating, but I trust her and I like her. I’d never tell her that, though.

”Any new word on the Hero’s Party?” Martina asked.
”Nothing major. They’re leveling up on schedule, and their extracurricular trouble-making has mostly died down,” Vera replied.
”I can overlook a little mischief. If they cross the line, I’ll issue a warning. If they still don’t listen… well, I’ll dispose of them later,” Martina said.
The Hero’s Party is my biggest headache. If they don’t get strong enough, they won’t kill the Demon King. But if they get too strong, they’ll be a nightmare to clean up. In this current batch, everyone except the Hero, Shouta, and the Saint, Ren, is a total dud. They’re either untrainable or not worth the effort. I need to start laying the groundwork for the post-Demon King world now. Shouta isn’t a total failure, but he’s one of those justice types who’s a pain to manage even if you break him in. Maybe only Ren will be worth keeping around after a bit of training.
”I’ve also tracked the movements of Otto, the fugitive, and Sakura, the Transferee who was with the Hero’s Party for a bit,” Vera said. “They took different paths, but both ended up in the Empire. The Emperor personally nullified the bounty placed on Otto within their borders via imperial decree.”
”Sakura isn’t worth a second thought,” Martina said. “I’d love to get that back from Otto, but negotiating with that Old Vulture is going to be a nightmare…”
”I’m afraid I can’t help you there. Good luck, My Lady,” Vera replied.
”I know, I know,” Martina said.
The Old Vulture is Empress Nadezhda. It’s a jab at her predatory eyes and her habit of swooping in to snatch up talented people from other nations. The Empire is a corrupt mess, but Nadezhda herself is a true believer in merit—which means she occasionally poaches my best prospects.
I’ll likely have to make massive concessions to get Otto back, and even then, I doubt I’ll see those Magic Items again. He probably traded one or both for sanctuary. What a royal pain in the neck. If I ever get my hands on him, being crushed by a wheel won’t even begin to cover it.
”As for the other Transferees, it’s as I reported,” Vera said. “Most are still Adventurers in the capital. Magic Swordsman Kenta and Fantasy Summoner Kazuya are still active but have left the capital. Magic-Clad⁴ Rei and Manami the Tamer have retired to open a shop. Aya the Alchemist and Makoto the Blacksmith are apprenticing in workshops within the capital. Takuya the Ninja has been scouted by the Minister of Internal Affairs.”
”I remember,” Martina said.
”One more thing. Takuya the Ninja is currently in marriage talks with the Minister’s daughter, Lady Patrizia,” Vera said.
”I heard the Minister was at his wit’s end with that girl. Clever of him to find a use for her,” Martina said.
Patrizia has an Intuition Skill⁵, but she’s such a space cadet that she’s useless for running a noble house. She’d been shooting down every suitor so far. The Minister probably tricked her into this just to keep Takuya on a leash.
”Actually, it’s the other way around,” Vera said.
”The other way?” Martina asked.
”Yes. It was a mutual spark. Apparently, Lady Patrizia was the one who insisted on it,” Vera replied.
Well, if it’s her idea, the Minister can breathe easy. Knowing Patrizia, she’d probably stab anyone who tried to force her into a marriage.
”Lady Patrizia is barely… well, she’s a bit out there, but you’re not getting any younger either, My Lady,” Vera said. “You really ought to find a husband before you become an old maid.”
”…You’re the only person who’d dare say that to my face,” Martina replied.
”Thank you,” Vera said.
”That wasn’t a compliment. Besides, we’re the same age,” Martina said.
”I have no intention of husband-hunting myself. My plan is to continue serving you,” Vera replied. “Once you find a husband, I’ll simply become his concubine.”
I appreciate the loyalty, I suppose, but that’s a lot to dump on me.
”That said, looking at the domestic nobility, I don’t see anyone worthy of you,” Vera said.
”…True enough,” Martina replied.
”However, if you’re willing to look elsewhere, I have a candidate,” Vera said.
”A foreign noble?” Martina asked.
”No. Daisuke-san, whom I mentioned earlier,” Vera replied. “Evaluating his ability comprehensively, I recommend him as your consort.”
”Normally, I’d say our status is miles apart, but you think that’s not an issue with him?” Martina asked.
”Yes. With his talent, he’s bound to achieve something legendary,” Vera said. “Once he does, we can just toss him a title and call it even. It’s not just his power; it’s his composure. He has the steady nerves of a man who wouldn’t blink even if he were caught in a surprise attack. He’s a fit for you.”
”Hmm…” Martina muttered.
”And for what it’s worth, he seems to get along famously with his lovers. No issues there—he’s a verified sexual powerhouse,” Vera said.
”Well, that is a requirement for producing an heir for the Gilman house,” Martina replied.
”He’s a bit slow on the uptake, but nothing a little training won’t fix,” Vera said.
”I see your point,” Martina replied.
I don’t currently have a fiancé. I’d planned to snatch up Saint Ren after the war, but I hear he’s been getting cozy with a certain Knight lately. Some Transferees don’t care about noble titles at all, so there’s always a risk they’ll just say no. In their world, monogamy seems to be the norm, and even more so if they’ve already found someone.
Daisuke is the same way. Plus, since he turned down the job, he clearly doesn’t want to be a government lapdog. I’ll just have to offer him something he can’t refuse. He doesn’t care for gold or power, but he’s an obvious womanizer. Judging by that shameless way he was looking at me, he doesn’t exactly find me repulsive.
He hasn’t done anything truly famous yet, so I’ll put a pin in it for now. But if he makes a name for himself, I might just consider a wedding.
”I’ll maintain contact with Daisuke-san to ensure things go smoothly if we ever move toward an engagement,” Vera said.
”…You’re not just selling your master out for the sake of more tarts, are you?” Martina asked.
”Perish the thought. Though, I do believe it would be the ultimate victory if his divine sweets and his service to you could coexist,” Vera replied.
”…Fine. Do what you want,” Martina said.
Vera says it all with that same blank face. It’s so hard to read her at times like this. I trust her since we’ve been together forever, but her obsession with sweets is getting a bit concerning.

(By the way, Martina-sama’s eyes are not “slightly sharp.” They are terrifying.)

A Saint from another world, he joins the Hero Party, nursing resentment toward Otto’s forced mentorship.
• Sakura – Reincarnated high‑school girl, Destroyer class, 160 cm slender with twin‑tails, perpetual scowl, thin chest armor and a short‑hair yankee style. Former JK Party member, once double‑dated Hero Shouta and Holy Knight Takumi, openly disliked by the protagonist and at odds with Daisuke. Now Otto’s supportive girlfriend, part of the Hero Party’s entourage, aiming to climb nobility by marrying into the party; their “stupid couple” dynamic is affectionate yet antagonistic.

• Manami – Leemans, an around-thirty former Earth adventurer and ex–Working Women Party member, now runs a cat café with elegant poise; though retired, her sharp eyes and cool demeanor betray her disciplined past.
