===
The mornings started early for the people of this world. It was normal to begin life the moment the sun peaked over the horizon. Even for freelancers like adventurers, there were no exceptions. Grete was already showing her face in the inn’s dining hall just after six.
”Morning, Ma’am! ♪”
”Morning, Grete-chan. You’re as energetic as ever.”
Grete exchanged a bright greeting with the landlady before tucking into a breakfast of hard bread and vegetable soup. Franziska, her roommate, had gone to wake up Etogā, so she was running a bit late.
”Morning, Grete… mumble mumble…”
”Honestly, pull yourself together!”
”Ahaha, morning! ♪”
Grete gave a wry smile at Etogā, who had appeared with his bedhead still a mess, and at Franziska, who was busy scolding him. Etogā rubbed the sleep from his eyes, but he started to wake up once the food hit his stomach.
”Were Hans and Irene awake?” Grete asked.
”Yeah, I think they’ll be here soon,” Franziska replied.
”Good morning… heavy sigh…”
”…Morning.”
”Oh, speak of the devil. Morning, guys,” said Grete.
The entire party was finally assembled. The reason Hans looked so exhausted first thing in the morning was that Irene had squeezed him dry again the night before. The sound of the bed creaking and muffled moans were a nightly occurrence at this point, so nobody even bothered to tease them about it.
”So, about today’s schedule—”
”Ah, can I go first?” Grete interrupted.
”Hmm? I don’t mind, but what is it?” Franziska asked.
Before the leader could start the briefing, Grete cut to the chase.
”It’s a bit sudden, but I’m going to leave the party.”
”Wait, really?” Hans asked.
”Yep. Sorry! ♪” Grete replied.
”……”
Hans’s face fell, looking utterly dejected. Irene remained silent, but she stared intently at Hans, her brow furrowing just a fraction. Grete pretended not to notice the tension and kept her tone cheery.
In truth, Grete had been Hans’s first love. He had been too shy to ever say a word, hoping that as they worked together in the party, eventually… but Irene had simply steamrolled over him before he could act. By the way, everyone in the group except Etogā knew exactly how Hans felt. Franziska had even filled Etogā in just to prevent any messy drama.
Because of that, the jealous Irene was extremely wary of Grete. For Grete—who wasn’t the least bit attracted to Hans—the whole situation was just plain uncomfortable. She wanted out as soon as possible.
”Are you transferring to a different party?” Franziska asked.
”Yeah. A party called ‘First Blood’.”
”Never heard of them…”
”It’s probably easier to explain if I say it’s the party made up of Daisuke-san’s lovers and slaves,” Grete explained.
”Whoa! Big Bro’s place?! That’s awesome! I’m so jealous!” Etogā shouted.
”Daisuke-san’s group, huh? That sounds like it could be interesting,” Franziska mused.
About a year ago, Daisuke and the Leemans members had saved Etogā and the others. Despite being in the same level bracket, Daisuke hadn’t flinched against a swarm of Ant-types, creating the opening they needed to escape.
He’d even kept the reward fee dirt cheap, which was a lifesaver. Etogā, in particular, had been mesmerized by Daisuke’s command of Earth Magic¹ and now worshipped him as a “Big Bro.”
”Think I could join that party too?!” Etogā asked.
”Hmm, I wouldn’t recommend it,” Grete said.
”Why not?!”
”Daisuke-san has a pretty strong possessive streak. I don’t think he’d like having another guy in a party full of his women,” Grete laughed.
”Ugh, fair point…”
Etogā slumped his shoulders in defeat. Since Daisuke’s Ordeal² only worked on the opposite s*x, Etogā’s admiration for him was purely genuine.
”Are you going to be okay in that party, Grete?” Franziska asked.
”Oh, yeah. I’m planning on becoming one of Daisuke-san’s lovers, too. ♪”
”Wait, what…?” Hans stammered.
Hans was visibly shaken by the bombshell, but everyone else ignored him and moved on. As Irene silently closed the distance to Hans, Franziska sighed inwardly, realizing the room next door was going to be very loud again tonight.
She had an interest in those things herself, so being forced to hear (Hans’s) gasps every night was a real struggle. There had been more than one occasion where she couldn’t take it and had to take care of herself. She thought Grete hadn’t noticed since they shared a room, but Grete knew exactly what was going on.
The conversation continued with Grete, Etogā, and Franziska hyping up Daisuke’s good points, while Hans’s smile became increasingly strained. Of course, Grete was doing this on purpose; she wanted to show she had zero interest in Hans so he’d finally give up. It was also a way to keep Irene’s jealousy from turning on her.
”If Grete’s leaving, I guess we need to recruit a new member,” Franziska said.
”…I want it to be a man.”
”Yeah, I figured,” Franziska replied to Irene.
The jealous Irene hated the idea of female members. She was usually quiet, but she went out of her way to make that clear.
(Phew… I feel like her eyes are going to turn on me next. I should probably look into transferring soon, too. Though Etogā is a Mind³…)
Since her little-brother-figure Etogā was the “reckless charger” type, he was a Mind, so Irene likely wouldn’t be jealous of him.
Regardless, Franziska felt she needed to secure her own safety before Irene decided to jump her in her sleep. She wondered if she should take Etogā and leave, or if she could use Grete’s connection to slide into Daisuke’s orbit.
”Well, shall we get going?” Franziska asked.
”You got it! ♪”
Ending the small talk, they finished their meal and prepped for the dungeon. At their low rank, they didn’t have the luxury of sitting around.
The Wyvern Slayers were a D-rank party whose main stomping ground was the sixth floor of the dungeon. Their primary prey was Deer. Since they were edible, they sold for a decent price, though they didn’t fetch as much as Orc meat due to the gamey flavor.
They occasionally ran into other parties in the dungeon’s Safe Zones. With her high social skills, Grete had plenty of acquaintances—including men who held out hope that they might have a “chance” with her.
”Grete-chan, did you think over what we talked about? Come join my party,” one man said.
”Sorry! I appreciate the offer, but I’m going to have to pass,” Grete replied.
”Man, that’s a bummer.”
The adventurer in his mid-twenties didn’t actually sound that disappointed. It was clearly a “doesn’t hurt to ask” situation. Being D-rank in your mid-twenties on the sixth floor meant his level was pretty low.
Unless he started late, he was either a total coward or just in the wrong class. Basically, he was a mediocre adventurer. Grete had no intention of underselling herself, so she turned him down politely.
On the way back to the Guild, they stopped at a grilled skewer stall. The owner, an old guy who usually looked grumpy, called out to her.
”Grete-chan, looking cute as always! Here, one’s on the house!”
”Thanks, Mister! ♪”
”Hahaha, don’t mention it!”
”Hey, hey, what about me?” Etogā asked.
”…Why would I give a freebie to a guy?”
”No way!”
It helped that there weren’t many other customers, but getting free stuff was a regular occurrence for her. She always thanked people with a smile, but she was careful to manage her distance so nobody got the wrong idea.
The growing Etogā hoped for a treat too, but no one was buying for the guys. The surly Irene and the stern Franziska didn’t get freebies either, but Etogā was the only one who actually felt slighted.
Back at the Guild, they reported the quest and turned in their materials. This marked the end of her day, and her time as a member of this party.
”What’s the plan for tonight? We could at least do a farewell party,” Franziska offered.
”Don’t worry about it. I’m heading to Daisuke-san’s place starting today. This is where we say goodbye,” Grete said.
”I see. Stay safe, Grete!” Etogā shouted.
”Hit us up anytime. If anything happens on our end, we’ll let you know,” Franziska added.
”Ah, ugh, take care…” Hans muttered.
”…Good luck in battle,” Irene said.
”Ahaha, thanks everyone! See ya! ♪”
She kept the goodbye intentionally brief and walked away. The real reason she skipped the party was to make sure a drunk Hans didn’t try to confess to her.
Just as she finished the paperwork to leave the party, Captain Thomas, the gorilla-type Beastman, called out to her.
”Yo, Grete!”
”Evening, Thomas-san! ♪”
”Man, Grete really is a cutie… Heh heh…”
”Wipe that pathetic look off your face!”
”Get it together!”
”Gah!”
Thomas got smacked by his wives. It was a common sight, so Grete just ignored it. Thomas was a somewhat famous adventurer who wielded the Wind Spear Rindvurm⁴ and led a B-rank party with his four wives.
He was also notorious for being a lecher, having even tried to hit on Henriette, the receptionist Daisuke was so uncomfortable with.
”So, how about it? Want to be my wife?” Thomas asked.
”Ahaha, thanks for the offer. But I’ve already picked someone out, so I’ll have to pass! ♪”
”Aww, too bad. Well, can’t be helped.”
”Come on, we’re going home. Dinner’s going to be late,” his wives scolded.
”Yeah, yeah. See ya, Grete!”
”Bye-bye! ♪”
Thomas didn’t seem particularly serious and backed off easily. Grete had turned him down, but his offer wasn’t actually bad—he just wasn’t her type.
”Oh, hey Nanami-chan! ♪”
”Yo, Grete-chan! Wazzup.”
””Wazzup! ♪””
”…Wazzup.”
Outside the Guild, she ran into Nanami, Hina, and Rin and traded high-fives. She couldn’t remember exactly how they’d become friends, but they were close enough to be called besties. When Hina had been homesick, Grete had been a major factor in her mental recovery, alongside Nanami.
”Grete, you’re always so peppy,” Nanami said.
”You know it! ♪”
”How’d it go yesterday?”
”Yeah, pretty much went as planned. He said he needs a little time, but it looks like I’m going to be his lover! ♪”
”Ooh, nice! Congrats,” Hina cheered.
”A lover, huh… I’m kinda jealous,” Nanami admitted.
”……”
Grete had consulted the three of them about her plan to woo Daisuke; in fact, Nanami had even given her fashion advice. Hina had listened in, though she didn’t have enough dating experience to help much. Rin, as usual, just listened quietly.
”I figured Grete-chan was a shoo-in, but I’m surprised Daisuke-san put it on hold,” Nanami said.
”Yeah. He was happy, but it seemed like it was totally unexpected for him. Like he hadn’t even considered it,” Grete replied.
”Really? That’s surprising.”
”Is it? I actually don’t think Daisuke-san has that much experience, honestly,” Grete noted.
”Yeah, totally. ♪”
Hina didn’t get it at all, but Nanami and Grete had read Daisuke’s “inner virgin” energy loud and clear.
”The lover thing is pending, but I’m moving into Daisuke-san’s place today! ♪”
”Damn, girl. You’re making moves,” Nanami laughed.
”Moving in together… that’s huge…” Hina whispered.
”…Me too, eventually,” Rin added.
In her talk with Daisuke, she’d gotten him to agree to her joining First Blood party and moving in. Daisuke had been a bit hesitant since they weren’t officially dating yet, but he’d caved when she said, “It’ll help us get closer faster, right? ♪”
Hearing Grete’s “moving in” declaration, Rin had muttered her own intention.
”Wait, Rin too?”
”Oh snap, you finally decided?”
”…Necessary to get close to Camilla. Plus, Daisuke isn’t a bad guy,” Rin explained.
”Hehe, Rin gets it! ♪”
Rin’s goal was, obviously, Camilla. Of course, she’d also decided that Daisuke was trustworthy and wouldn’t treat her badly, but it was still a shock to Hina. Nanami, however, had seen it coming.
”Anyway, let’s hang out again soon! ♪”
”Yeah, catch you later, Grete.”
”Bye-bye—”
”…Later.”
Parting ways with the three, Grete skipped through the chilly autumn twilight toward her final destination.
Grete was fully aware that there was a level of calculation in her choosing Daisuke. While she felt a little bad that she wasn’t coming at him with the pure, selfless affection Nicola had, she felt it was only natural to seek the stability of a B-rank adventurer and the security of a good personality. That was just common sense for a person in this world. But that didn’t mean her feelings of “liking” him were a lie.
She’d been surprised when they first met, but not particularly attracted. She was just impressed by his abilities. After being invited to dinner a few times and realizing he didn’t have much of an ulterior motive (well, maybe a little), they became friends, and she eventually heard about the Ordeal skill. She realized then that her lack of initial attraction might have been because of that skill. Looking at Daisuke objectively, he checked every single one of her boxes.
The dinner dates continued, but the relationship hadn’t moved forward. Since Daisuke had basically given up on her from the start, he never made a move. But that actually worked in his favor; his lack of aggression made her feel safe, which was a “pass” in her book.
The turning point was Nicola. When Grete met her earlier that summer, Nicola had this look on her face like she was practically melting. Grete had subtly pried the story out of her. The result was a shock of a different kind. She was surprised by his “technique,” and even more so by his stamina in handling two women with ease. Since stamina is essential in this line of work, that was a major plus.
Seeing how he got along with Nicola—who was even more of a novice than herself—without just playing with her, Grete decided she wanted to be his lover. But she’d resolved to wait and see his actual reaction before proposing it.
Once she’d made up her mind, though, it was hard to find a chance to meet, and she only heard bits and pieces from Nicola. She’d told Daisuke she wasn’t in a hurry, but since she wanted out of her party ASAP, she’d actually been quite anxious.
After several agonizing days, she’d finally been able to talk to him yesterday, and she’d gotten almost exactly what she wanted… even if being “put on hold” was a bit of a surprise.
Still, she wasn’t pessimistic since he’d given a positive vibe. He’d even let her move in.
(I wonder what to do about Franziska. I’m sure it’d be better for her over here, so if I can get Daisuke-san in the mood, maybe I’ll invite her too! ♪)
With those thoughts in mind, she knocked on the door of her new home. The man who opened the door and welcomed her warmly was her future lover. The kindness she’d taken for granted before felt wonderful now. As she hugged him, his warmth seeped into her heart, and the cold outside didn’t matter anymore.
”I’m in your care starting today, Daisuke-san! ♪”
