Volume 1 Chapter 11
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
The ogre smashed through the ice, swinging its battle axe like crazy.
Did it realize it was still alive? My childhood friend kept a safe distance and froze it again with ice magic.
”We can’t take it down with magic. But can you buy us some time?”
”Yeah.”
When the ogre broke through the ice again, this time it froze just its feet, literally stopping it in its tracks.
In the meantime, I operated the base system and bought the strongest weapon I could afford── a 1200pt halberd. As I grabbed it, a solid weight surged through my hands. With this, I might be able to break through its armor-like tough skin.
”You’re bleeding from your head, but are you okay, Koushi?”
”Hmph. Honestly, it hurt more when big sister hit me.”
Looks like I was way too scared. Sure, it’s bigger and stronger than me, and one hit could be fatal, but… it’s weaker than big sister.
While magic doesn’t work on it, it also doesn’t use any troublesome magic itself. So, it’s basically a weaker version of big sister. Without any special abilities, I realized it was much easier to fight.
”Mayuki, please.”
”Okay.”
I raised the halberd.
Mayuki created the biggest ice block ever, completely trapping the ogre.
I could see cracks forming in the ice as it struggled to break free.
Part of the ice shattered, and the ogre burst out.
I slammed the halberd down with all my strength onto its neck.
The blade sank deep──and the ogre’s head flew off.
’You have defeated a demon general class ogre. +6000pt’
The base system confirmed it was dead.
I quickly bought a healing potion and pressed it to the fallen class representative’s lips. The liquid flowed into her… and she coughed. Looks like I made it just in time.
”…You really took it down.”
”Yeah. Thanks to you and Mayuki.”
It was effective, and the class representative slowly got up. Then, without hesitation, bowed their head.
”Thank you. You saved my life.”
”I really thought I was going to die. If Mayuki hadn’t come, it would have been over.”
Together with the class representative, we stared at our lifesaver.
Sotozaki Mayuki. My childhood friend, who, if she stays quiet, looks like a delicate and elegant lady from a wealthy family. I’ve heard the boys say she’s “mysterious and cute,” but as her childhood friend, I want to say, “Don’t be fooled by her looks.”
Mayuki may look like a beautiful girl with long hair and a great figure, but inside, she’s a total weirdo. She’s what you call a “disappointing beauty.”
”Koushi. Can I have some of that drink you had earlier?”
”Sure. Did you get hurt or something?”
”I was so hungry that I picked at a bunch of stuff. I’ve been feeling sick ever since…”
What the heck.
”That invincible stomach from when we were kids, which could eat all kinds of weeds… has finally met its match…!?”
This Island of Trials is such a scary place.
The class representative was looking at Mayuki with a look that questioned her sanity.
”…Did you really not think it was dangerous to eat that?”
”I’m a genius, so it’s fine.”
The class representative looked at Mayuki as if she had discovered an alien.
”Mayuki is an unfounded narcissist. She thinks she’s the greatest genius in the world.”
”I’m not that full of myself.”
”Oh really? By the way, Mayuki, the sea around this island is so clear and beautiful.”
”I’m way prettier, though.”
The class representative was left speechless. Most people who get to know Mayuki’s true nature react like this.
When I’m not around, she’s super quiet, so it’s hard to get caught, but since she usually stay quiet, when she talks to me, she become really chatty. That’s why anyone who hears our conversation is often surprised. Mayuki’s behavior is so wild that it’s not uncommon for people to do a double-take, or even a triple-take.
”Well, I’m glad you’re okay. I was worried.”
”Yeah. You too, Koushi.”
Mayuki hugs me.
The conversation isn’t really happening, but that’s just how it is. I’m used to it by now.
By the way, I’ve definitely turned off the automatic activation of ‘Eros Magic.’ While I was messing with the Base system, I found it tucked away in a hard-to-notice spot.
”Hey, I have a suggestion for you two. My Magic is called ‘Base Magic’ and it can teleport us to a safe space. How about we take a break there for a bit?”
I intentionally avoided talking about living together because I thought class representative might hesitate if I brought it up suddenly. If it’s just to rest, class representative would probably be okay with stopping by. They must be tired right after the fight, so the chances of being turned down are low. It’s almost a sure thing that I can get them to come along.
”That sounds good. I need to thank you for helping me, so I’ll join you.”
Just as planned, class representative agreed without any suspicion.
”Koushi, you have a bad look on your face.”
”…Mayuki, I’ll get you anything you want, so just be quiet. What do you want?”
”A Ferrari.”
Is she planning to drive it in the forest?
Even if I could buy one, she’d probably wreck it in a day.
* * *
Four girls are looking at each other.
Since Kashiro explained the Base in detail, class representative was giving me a bit of a glare. I guess she figured out that I intentionally withheld some information.
As for me… I was feeling pretty good, looking at the Point Shop since I got the Housemate bonus for 2 people, in addition to the Ogre’s Defeat Point.
First, the fridge is a must. The kitchen is hard to give up too, and I might want enough beds for everyone. If we have private rooms, everyone will be happy. Is the 2000pt large bathhouse too much of a waste?
”Luxury car…”
Mayuki, just give that up. The car is on the list, but it’s ridiculously expensive.
”Hyakudou, I can’t live here.”
Suddenly, the class representative said it with a serious face.
”Do you not want to live with me? I promise I won’t make a move.”
”I’m really doubting that.”
Kashiro glanced at me.
The truth is, I’ve already made a move, so it’s complicated to be trusted.
”Having been helped, I can’t cause any more trouble. If you want to support a large number of people, you’ll need that many points, right? You must have used points for that medicine earlier too.”
That’s true, but I don’t want to be held back by that.
”…If the class representative really wants to help a friend, there shouldn’t be a more convenient place than here. If you still refuse, it would mean our friendship isn’t worth much.”
The class representative hesitated. I guess my intentionally mean comment left her speechless.
She had 2 close friends in class. It seems she hasn’t found them yet, and she must be feeling anxious inside. If I poke at those feelings, she’ll easily fall.
”Until you find your friends, you can use me. Class representative is reliable, and if you cooperate, that would be great.”
The class representative looked troubled, but she made a decision without taking too long.
”I’m sorry. I think it’s cowardly, but please let me use you.”
”You don’t need to apologize. I’ll be using you too.”
Now I can hunt demons freely.
I can’t let go of such a valuable person like a martial artist who can use lightning magic.
”Koushi, what about me?”
”Mayuki, I have no choice. Even if I say no, I’ll be restrained. If I leave you alone, who knows what you might do?”
”Thank you. I love you too.”
As I lightly hug Mayuki, who snuggles up to me as usual, I glance at the Point Shop. Everyone is giving us meaningful looks, but it’s hard to rethink my distance with Mayuki now. I can only hope they get used to it.
