Volume 1 Chapter 8

”The Watch I Just Bought is Broken…”
As soon as I woke up, I bought a wristwatch.
After attacking Kashiro, I had enough points, so I also exchanged things like a changing room, toothbrush, and toothpaste.
The two girls who had just finished brushing their teeth after waking up peeked at the wristwatch.
”The second hand is stuck.”
”This should be moving with magic, but it’s strange, right?”
Is it possible to get a defective product?
I paid 100 points, and it would be a bummer if it was wasted.
”…I tried using ‘Analysis Magic,’ but that wristwatch isn’t broken.”
”But it’s not moving.”
”So, that means its current state is correct.”
Yodomizu and I tilted our heads.
”Does that mean time is stopped?”
”To be precise, it seems that the Base space and the Island of Trials are separate worlds. The time that wristwatch shows is the time on the Island, and no matter how many hours we spend in this world, not a second has passed on the Island.”
”That’s unbelievable.”
”Wow, magic is amazing…”
But wait.
”There was a time when only Kashiro stayed in the Base, right? Wasn’t the same time flowing then? I mean, according to that logic, doesn’t it mean that my absence from the Base is a problem?”
If time in the Base is moving while time on the Island isn’t, what happens to the Base when I’m living in Island?
My head was starting to get tangled up thinking about it.
”The axis of the Base world is you, Hyakudou.”
”…What do you mean?”
”It seems that while you, the master of this place, are living in Island’s time, the Base world’s time is also linked. Plus, we, the housemates, have been given the authority to teleport to the Island of Trials, so… there’s no need to worry.”
So that’s how it is. ‘Base Magic’ really is a convenient existence for me.
”The more I learn about it, the more attractive this place seems. If this gets out, you will definitely be targeted, Hyakudou. Being here means you’re totally free from survival worries.”
”If I leave the exploring to you and just stay in, I won’t have to worry about my life. But if I happen to die on the Island of Trials, it feels like the Base would disappear with me, huh?”
”Since it’s your magic, if you die, this Base space will probably vanish too. That’s a scary thought. You have to stay alive for sure.”
While Kashiro and I were chatting, Yodomizu seemed to gather her courage and moved closer to me.
”Um! I’ll do my best to be helpful too!”
I appreciate her enthusiasm, but honestly, I feel safer if she stays at the Base.
But I guess that’s not how it works. Kashiro has already paid a heavy price. I can’t just favor Yodomizu when she hasn’t done anything yet.
”If you want to live in my Base, the rent is high. You’ll have to work hard to earn it.”
”I’m counting on you, Yodomizu, since you’re an immediate asset. You have some pretty powerful attack magic.”
Oh, so it’s magic that’s useful in battle.
Exactly what we’re lacking right now.
”Ah, but… I’m sorry. My magic isn’t very user-friendly.”
She started with that uncertain tone, then explained her magic.
”My magic is dark magic. It has 3 main abilities, and basically, it weakens the opponent.”
Is it like a debuff in a game?
”One is called ‘Curse of Sluggishness,’ which can slow down movement.”
That’s simple but has an amazing effect. It can really put a lot of pressure on the opponent.
”The second one is ‘Veil of Darkness,’ which can blind the opponent’s vision.”
Nothing can be seen, huh? That’s quite an ability. If it were used against me, it would be a real pain. Even for me, continuing to fight while blind would be tough. I’d probably get killed almost instantly.
”Finally, there’s the ‘instant death ability.’ It can only be used once a day, but it can kill the target instantly.”
There it is, the instant death magic. In games, it usually has a low hit rate or doesn’t work on bosses, or it’s so strong that it gets nerfed.
”I don’t think it will be very useful since I can only use the instant death magic once to defeat an enemy…”
That’s not true. Even if it’s not an offensive ability, everything can be useful.
”It seems like it will be much easier to defeat demonkind. Do your other 2 abilities have any usage limits?”
I prepare for battle and discuss the details with Yodomizu. The real question is how much Yodomizu can actually move in front of demonkind.
Just because the ability is strong, I need to be careful not to rely on it too much.
* * *
After that, we get ready and teleport to the Island of Trials together.
As Kashiro explained, it was dusk.
It seems like the time hasn’t moved at all since we teleported from the base.
”The clock has started moving. It feels kind of weird.”
”──Yeah, even though we should have had a good night’s rest, it feels like our sense of time is getting messed up.”
It’s good to be able to rest properly, though.
”That’s true, but what I’m most curious about is… the way time moves on this island is the same as on Earth.”
When we’re in the forest, we can’t see much of the sky, but I had noticed that I hadn’t seen the sun. It was bright in the morning and afternoon, and now the sky is colored like sunset, but it feels somewhat artificial.
”Hyakudou. This is just my guess, a rough hypothesis, but…”
After the preface, Kashiro starts to share her thoughts.
”Before teleporting to this Island, we got an explanation from Godborn, right? At that time, they said, ‘The Demonkind living in the Island of Trials don’t have any intelligence, unlike the real ones.’”
Oh, they said something similar when it was my turn.
”So, that means the Demonkind here on this Island aren’t the real deal. Plus, considering that time flows the same as on Earth but we can’t see the stars… I think we should call this Island a ‘Magic space’ created by Godborn. If there’s something like Hyakudou’s Base space, then it wouldn’t be strange if they could create rhis Island entirely.”
That’s an interesting opinion.
We won’t know the truth unless we ask Godborn, but it feels like a reasonable guess.
”If that’s the case, it means escaping from this Island is impossible.”
”Yeah, since it’s a stage set up by the gods, there’s no doubt we can’t escape from the Island.”
”…I-I’m starting to feel a bit sick to my stomach.”
Kashiro pats Yodomizu’s head.
They really don’t seem like classmates.
”Well, it’s not all bad. Yodomizu got to meet me soon after coming to this Island.”
I tried to lighten the mood, but I got some cold stares from the two.
”Do you usually say that about yourself?”
”Mr. Hyakudou, y-you really are surprisingly narcissistic.”
I won’t deny it.
Given the situation, I think it’s mentally safer to tell myself, “I’m capable.” If I don’t, more and more worries will pile up, and I might break down.
In reality, I’m the strongest even without Magic, and I’ll probably manage somehow.
Unless I get killed by Yodomizu’s instant-death Magic, I shouldn’t lose.
…Oh no, I’m starting to lose confidence. Magic is just too unfair.
