Chapter 109 Student Freedom Alliance Rally
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
It’s in the same place as yesterday, the girls’ dorm C building conference room.
Yesterday, they had a meeting with ten important representatives, but today it’s gonna be bigger, with over 50 people showing up.
Yesterday, along with talks about today’s rally, they had deep discussions on the management rules of the Student Freedom Alliance and how to handle emergencies.
The hottest topic was the phone communication features.
Not every representative got the communication features, so those who didn’t were unhappy. Meanwhile, the ones who did were feeling superior and trying to get even more, all while desperately showing their loyalty and contributions to the Student Freedom Alliance.
The Student Freedom Alliance says they’ll set up a management organization for representatives, but they pretend everyone is equal and there’s no hierarchy.
They’ve just started setting up this representative organization, so for now, it makes sense that the Class 2-D and ‘The Last Survivor’ are at the top of the command structure.
The selection of the representatives for this body is being done by Higurashi, Akiyama, and the chairpersons who call themselves the ‘Student Freedom Alliance Launch Committee’, so at this stage, we end up being in power.
Plus, there’s the awarding of communication features.
To solidify this power, Higurashi seems to be deliberately creating disparities among the representatives using the communication features, pushing them to compete.
During the meeting, she explained how useful the communication features are since you can use them in dungeons, allowing for quick rescue requests to nearby parties or the Academy’s forces in dangerous situations.
With chat apps, you can share the latest information, so just one person having it boosts their survival rate dramatically.
If you become a representative of a party or clan, you’re gonna have to go all out to get one of those.
Normally, this group is just a bunch of individuals and groups with no real connections, truly a ragtag bunch, but they managed to give Higurashi and the ‘Student Freedom Alliance Launch Committee’ some serious power by using the communication function as bait, and now they’re quickly coming together as one organization.
In response to the Student Council attack by Demiurge that happened in the morning, they found some issues, but Higurashi seemed to feel good about how it was all working out.
”I expect a lot more people to show up at today’s meeting. On a weekday morning, we should be able to reliably gather a hundred people. By next week, it’s gonna be even crazier!”
Higurashi talks with a smug grin, looking genuinely excited.
It’s like a kid bragging to friends about their game progress.
”So, before the meeting, I want you to add the communication function to these new smartphones.”
Higurashi said this while pulling out smartphone after smartphone from a paper bag and lining them up on the low table.
There were 12 in total.
”That’s fine, but these don’t have any markers or notes on them. How do we know which one belongs to who?”
”Oh, that’s not a problem at all. With this many, I won’t forget whose is whose.”
It’s probably pointless to think about what’s going on in this girl’s head now.
As I tried to pull out my smartphone, all the phones in front of me suddenly switched to the download screen.
Looks like Tina did that.
At first, she used to ask for my approval every time she wanted to use exp points, but since she got her memory back, she’s been pretty carefree about it.
Sometimes, new features just popped up without me knowing.
It’s nice and convenient, though.
This means I’ve used 360 exp points, but I still have enough to add the communication function to over a hundred more phones, so it’s no problem at all.
”Thanks, Tina!”
Higurashi thanked Tina, who was probably floating somewhere, and put the smartphones back in the paper bag.
”Guess it’s about time to head back. I still gotta meet up with Akiyama-senpai and Irie-senpai, too. Tsuchimiya-senpai’s just messing around ’til things start.”
”Got it.”
It’s better to get to the venue early ’cause it’s real obvious if you show up in the middle. Plus, I’m supposed to sit in the front row where all the participants can see me.”
And if I can wrap up my work, they said it’s cool to dip out early. But Higurashi won’t spill what that job even is.
We left the top-floor VIP room behind and took the elevator back down to the first floor.
After saying goodbye to Higurashi in front of the elevator, I’ve got nothing to do, so I’m just wandering around.
I peeked into the meeting room and saw rows of pipe chairs crammed close together.
I spotted Nishina-san and Kanon in there, too.
When I got back to the lobby, I saw Himeno and Maekawa-san among the staff checking the signatures of the arrivals.
Looking outside, I saw my classmates loitering behind the tennis club building, just like yesterday.
That spot’s a total blind spot from the Academy.
Most folks are out diving at this time, so there aren’t many students left in the Academy.
Since most regular students head from the entrance to the teleportation facility, or through the main gate to the special zone dorms and student housing, the path to the C-wing dorms, behind the school building, is pretty out of sight.
They’re telling participants to come through the C-wing building and its backside, so it shouldn’t be too eye-catching.
A bunch of participants will be passing by the first floor of the C-wing where the newspaper club room is, but it seems the newspaper club’s still trying to get permission to cover the event on the down low.
The classmates gathered behind the building are backup just in case, but they probably won’t get a turn anytime soon.
That’s when I noticed a short guy walking towards me, carrying a shopping bag in one hand.
Hey, isn’t that my soon-to-be buddy, Ijuuin-kun?
A few days have passed since our last contact, so it’s about time for a light touch-base, I guess.
Ijuuin-kun is putting his shoes away in the shoe cabinet and changing into guest slippers at the entrance.
He got permission from Lisphy-san to use the resident shoe cabinet too.
It seems only a few people have moved in besides Higurashi and Maekawa-san.
The C dorm is older and less popular compared to other student dorms, seen as out in the sticks.
Even coming to another world, that doesn’t seem to change.
I walked up to Ijuuin-kun as he entered the lobby.
”Hey, Ijuuin-kun.”
”T-Tsuchimiya-kun!?”
I thought I spoke quietly, but it seems I surprised Ijuuin-kun instead.
He’s a shy, introverted otaku, so I gotta be super careful with him.
I put on an awkward smile (totally not the same) and spread my arms to show I’m harmless.
”Ijuuin-kun, can you come over here for a sec?”
”…W-where?”
”It’s okay, it’s not scary.”
”I-I understand…”
He’s really tense, huh?
Ijuuin-kun, breathing heavily and starting to sweat like he ran here, looks a bit wobbly, so I put my arm around him to support him as we went up the stairs.
When we reached the landing, I faced Ijuuin-kun where he couldn’t be seen from the lobby.
He’s acting all nervous like when we first met.
Being alone with someone he doesn’t know well might still be too much for him.
Let’s get to the point quickly.
”Ijuuin-kun, can you take out your phone?”
”Huh? M-my phone?”
Ijuuin-kun, confused, shakily handed me his phone.
He probably trusts me a bit since I saved him from that bad guy last time.
I downloaded the communication function onto Ijuuin-kun’s phone, then opened the chat app and sent a friend request from my phone.
”I just added the communication function to your phone.”
”Huh!? Tsuchimiya-kun…?”
”Ah, please don’t tell anyone. This is our secret.”
Ijuuin-kun swallows hard.
Who has the skill to give communication functions is top secret.
To outsiders, it’s someone from Class 2-D.
From Class 2-D, they’re only recognized as someone from ‘The Last Survivor.’
”B-but, why me?”
Ijuuin-kun, with his noble heart, wouldn’t brag about this to others.
This is also a sign of my trust and determination.
”Because it’s you, Ijuuin-kun. I trust you. More than that…”
I turned my phone screen towards Ijuuin-kun.
”I just sent you a friend request. If you don’t mind, could you just hit that approval button?”
”Huh…?”
As I held my breath and watched, Ijuuin-kun pressed the approval button with trembling fingers.
Yes!
Ijuuin-kun accepted me!
I then created a chat room just for me and Ijuuin-kun and sent an invitation, which Ijuuin-kun approved.
”Now me and Ijuuin-kun are chat buddies!”
I smiled and handed my phone to Ijuuin-kun, who took it with a dazed expression.
Right now, only important people from the Student Freedom Alliance and Student Council get communication functions, but Ijuuin-kun is special to me, so he gets a special spot.
”You were out running errands, right? Is it okay if you don’t deliver it quickly?”
Ijuuin-kun’s bag had a bunch of mineral water and throat lozenges inside.
”Ah! W-well, I’m off! Th-thank you!”
Ijuuin-kun hurriedly dashed down the stairs.
