Chapter 140 Results of Special Training
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
”I’m the transfer student, Fujisaki Kaede, who’s joining ‘The Last Survivor’¹ as of today. Nice to meet those of you I haven’t met yet,” Fujisaki said.
When Fujisaki introduced herself in the living room of Hiromi-san’s suite, Tomoko clung to Akari-san’s arm, while Kanon-chan dove behind Himeno-san to hide.
I’d already shared my intentions with Akari-san when she got back from the Trash Floor², so everyone had already signed off on Fujisaki joining the squad.
”I’m Higurashi Asuka, a first-year. Good to have you, Fujisaki-senpai. I’m counting on you today,” Higurashi said.
”Right. Leave it to me,” Fujisaki replied.
Higurashi-san is steady as ever.
”N-Nishina… Tomoko. Nice to meet you…” Tomoko whispered.
”Wh-wh… Watarase… Kanon… n-nice to meet you…” Kanon stammered.
Kanon-chan peeked out from behind Himeno-san, but when Fujisaki-san gave her a sharp smirk, she squeaked and pulled back. Njorn was nowhere to be seen, either. Usually, those two aren’t this shy, but Fujisaki-san’s face is just terrifying. Maybe she’s nervous too, because her “scare factor” is up at least thirty percent. My clan feels less like a group of friends and more like an evil syndicate right now.
Once the greetings were out of the way, Chikako-san walked over and started poking and prodding my body.
”Oho? You don’t look much different, but you’ve definitely hardened up, haven’t you?” Chikako asked.
”Heh, I’m actually ripped under the clothes,” I said.
I really wanted to brag about the abs I’d busted my tail to get. But the second I said it, everyone—from Himeno-san on down—glared at me with sharp, wide eyes. Their intensity made my blood run cold. Note to self: “dirty” jokes are life-threatening around Evolds³!
”Tsuchimiya-senpai, did you get taller too?” Higurashi asked.
Higurashi-san’s eyes scanned me from my toes to the top of my head.
”Maybe? I guess it’s not weird to hit a growth spurt after eating and exercising that much,” I replied.
I’m still in my growing years, after all. My appetite has skyrocketed compared to before my training. It’s only natural for my body to bulk up with that kind of routine.
”I thought I’d be able to overtake you soon, but it looks like you’ve pulled even further ahead…” Higurashi muttered.
Higurashi-san looked genuinely frustrated. She’s only a centimeter shorter than me. I didn’t feel like I’d changed that much, so even if I did grow, it must have been a tiny bit.
”Why are you so obsessed with competing with me on height?” I asked.
”I just feel like… if I ever make it back to Japan, I want to try putting on real makeup and dressing up like a beautiful, mature woman,” Higurashi said.
”I think you’d look stunning, Asuka-chan,” Hiromi-san added.
”Nu…” Higurashi grunted.
This girl… she really jumps around in conversations, doesn’t she? And that “if I make it back to Japan” bit… knowing about Higurashi-san’s condition makes that a hard topic for me to touch.
”I want to wear high heels, go all out on fashion… and then spend a whole day dragging Tsuchimiya-senpai around the busy streets of Tokyo while he wears one of his incredibly lame T-shirts,” Higurashi said.
”That sounds like a hate crime!” I shouted.
”If the Special Zone gets more crowded with students, I suppose that would do for a start. But at this rate, I’ll end up having to leave that mission to Amahara-senpai. Though watching from the sidelines might be amusing in its own way,” Higurashi continued.
”Mu… I want another ten centimeters too!” Himeno-san chimed in. “It’s hard to compete at the national level in high school with my current height. There’s no guarantee I’ll be able to take these Evold physical abilities back with me, either.”
Why is everyone in this room trying to be taller than me?!
Even without the height gap, I’m so out of their league that walking through a crowded downtown area on a date with Himeno-san and the others would feel like a penalty game. I’d much rather watch from a distance while they all have fun together. I’m way more comfortable with indoor dates, like playing games in a room.
”More importantly, the operation starts at 06:00, right? Shouldn’t we be heading out?” I asked.
”Actually, they’re distributing gear at the dojo, so the start time got pushed back. They’re prioritizing the first-wave teams and the mop-up squads, so we’re looking at about a thirty-minute delay. Tsuchimiya-senpai, your team doesn’t go in until the mop-up squad finishes, so just relax. Also, the School Management Committee is lifting the restrictions on combat skills and magic within the Academy,” Higurashi explained.
”Oh? Can they do that just like that?” I asked.
”Supposedly, you just have to pass between the two pillars in front of the teleportation circle. It doesn’t affect the students diving into the dungeon, but it’s the ‘last bastion’ in case the Academy itself is breached. The plan is to move the entire student body there once the combat teams have finished their dive,” Higurashi said.
If that’s the case, then even if Kibakura breaks through the first and second lines and reaches the Academy, a third line can be formed at the Teleportation Facility to fight back. Our job is to make sure it never comes to that, but it really is the final line of defense.
”Fujisaki-senpai, are you okay with being in the vanguard?” Higurashi asked.
”Yeah. After all, Fujisaki-san is Level 20,” I answered for her.
It was already decided she’d be on the front lines. Fujisaki-san nodded in agreement.
”I’ll be in the vanguard too,” Hiromi-san declared. “I think this special training yielded plenty of results.”
Hiromi-san was volunteering for the front. She’s still technically a bit green, but with her Evil Eye⁴, she’s strong enough to keep up with me or Fujisaki-san.
”I want Maekawa-senpai to stay just behind the front line as our vanguard leader,” Higurashi-san instructed. “I’ll be coordinating with HQ and giving overall commands, so I can’t focus solely on ‘The Last Survivor’ squad.”
So Hiromi-san would be right behind the front. I get it—with her Future Sight, she can sense unexpected trouble before it hits. If she can warn us from the back, we might be able to dodge it. Apparently, her Future Sight used to be hit-or-miss, but with her continued training, she’s reached a point where she can see things with incredible precision. It’s a sense I can’t really grasp, but the way she “sees” it has changed too. Besides, we have Sogahara-senpai’s group and the Demiurge folks in the vanguard too; there are so many people that we couldn’t all fight at once anyway.
”Understood. I just need to give orders if I notice anything, right?” Hiromi-san asked.
Hiromi-san seemed to pick up on Higurashi-san’s intent. She’d told Himeno-san, Higurashi-san, and Kanon-chan about her Evil Eye right after I left for the Trash Floor, but Fujisaki-san and Karen-chan still didn’t know. It’s not as simple as “we’re allies, so tell them.” Hiromi-san’s ‘Evil Eye of the Truth-Falsehood Judge’ can make people fear her, leading to resentment or rejection. It’s a delicate issue.
”Well, either way, we’ve got thirty minutes to kill,” I said.
I sat down on the living room sofa. This room felt incredibly nostalgic. I’d spent four months living on the Trash Floor, but only a day and change had passed here. It’s a bizarre feeling.
”I can’t sit still, so I’m going to go get ready. I don’t know how you guys can be so relaxed,” Chikako-san said.
Chikako-san, looking a bit pale, started putting on her armor. She equipped an iron breastplate over the leather armor she’d found on the Trash Floor. Both had +1 modifiers, and her round shield was a +2. On top of that, the vanguard members were wearing ‘Protection Rings +1’—magic rings that generate a defensive barrier. I’d given those to Himeno-san and Chikako-san before they left last time.
Back then, Himeno-san had asked me to put it on her finger myself. I remember her staring enraptured at the ring on her ring finger. I mean, it’s expensive, but it’s still just combat gear…
Items with +2 modifiers are rare, but according to Tina, we should have found way more considering how many chests we opened. She thought there might be a bias in the Trash Floor’s drops, but after the whole ‘water skin’ incident, a new theory emerged: ‘Fujisaki-san has god-awful luck.’
”I’m nervous too, you know! I’ve thought this for a while, but doesn’t everyone here have nerves of steel? Well, except for Chikako,” Fujisaki-san said.
”Oh, believe me, I’m nervous too,” Hiromi-san replied with a smile, pouring tea for everyone.
”Exactly. I’m anxious, but there’s no point in flailing around this late in the game, is there?” Akari-san added, sipping her tea elegantly.
”You guys aren’t convincing at all,” Fujisaki-san deadpanned, staring at Hiromi-san and Akari-san with flat, judging eyes. I couldn’t say it out loud, but those two… they aren’t exactly the civilian type.
Tomoko-chan, still wary of Fujisaki-san, crept over like a cat and sat on my lap. Kanon-chan followed her lead, sitting down right next to me and sticking to my side.
”Tsuchimiya-senpai, Fujisaki-senpai, you should register for the ‘Beast Subjugation HQ’ and ‘First-Wave Command’ group chats while you have the chance,” Higurashi-san said.
”Group chats?” Fujisaki-san asked, sounding confused.
”Oh, right, I hadn’t told you. Tina can restore the communication functions on our phones,” I explained.
”I never heard about this! What kind of ridiculous cheat-code function is that?! Why didn’t anyone tell me something that important?!” Fujisaki-san shouted.
”Sorry, phones don’t work on the Trash Floor, so I totally forgot. Do you still have yours?” I asked.
”I’ve kept it safe, but the battery’s dead. I don’t even know if it’ll turn on,” Fujisaki-san said.
Fujisaki-san pulled her phone out of her pouch.
”We can generate electricity with magic, so it’ll be fine,” I said.
As Fujisaki-san approached me, Tomoko-chan and Kanon-chan tensed up and clung to me. I took the phone, applied the communication-restoration procedure, and handed it back.
”Ah… it works! I can even see my photos and videos!” Fujisaki-san cheered.
”Open the chat app and get registered,” I said.
I sent a request to join the room and was approved instantly. The master of the ‘First-Wave Command’ chat was Higurashi-san. Looking at the messages, it seemed the gear distribution was well underway. We already had everything we needed, so it didn’t really involve us. Once the mop-up squad finished clearing the zone to make sure no monsters interrupted the op, the first wave would start. We still had a bit of time to relax.
An excited Fujisaki-san started exchanging contact info with everyone, and eventually, she made her way over to us.
”U-Um… sorry about what happened before, Nishina-san. Since I’ve become Takeru’s s*x slave now, we don’t have any reason to be enemies anymore,” Fujisaki-san said.
”Sex slave…?” Tomoko whispered.
”N-No! I mean, she says ‘s*x slave,’ but it’s just a title! We’re just normal teammates!” I shouted.
Why does she use that term without a second thought?!
”A-As expected of Tsuchimiya-senpai!” Tomoko-chan looked at me with judging, flat eyes, but Kanon-chan, for some reason, was looking up at me with pure admiration.
”I… I want to be friends with Nishina-san. Can we… exchange info?” Fujisaki-san asked.
Fujisaki-san’s face was beet red as she fidgeted.
Wow, she’s actually pretty cute when she’s like this. I don’t think I’ve ever seen this side of her.
”Yeah… sure. You can just call me Tomoko…” Tomoko replied.
When Tomoko answered, Fujisaki’s face twisted into a devious, wicked grin, and Tomoko ended up practically hyper-attaching herself to me.
That face is a crime!
It reminded me of a video I saw on GooTube⁵ once about a dog that looked absolutely demonic whenever it got happy.
Fujisaki managed to swap contact info with Tomoko and Kanon, and even squeezed in a greeting with Njorn, who had popped out from Kanon’s cleavage.
We’re right on the verge of the big showdown, but since everyone was acting like it was just another Tuesday, I found myself relaxing a bit. It felt like a fever dream that I’d spent the last four months rotting on the trash floor⁶.
I spent the time going over the tactical phases with Higurashi. As the zero hour approached, we all geared up and headed out in full combat kit. Fujisaki had ditched her school blazer and shirt, opting for a basketball jersey she’d borrowed from Himeno.
Out on the grounds, several students were lugging the morning assembly platform into position.
Looking closer, I realized only two people were moving that massive thing. Typical Evolds⁷.
As we passed behind the Student Council wing and the dojo, I could hear a dull roar of activity despite the early hour. The second-wave students were likely in there picking out gear that fit them. Along with weapons, there were massive donations of recovery and buff potions. On the trash floor, we’d even managed to snag Medium Recovery Potions-stuff that doesn’t even drop on the 5th floor.
As we rounded the corner toward the courtyard, we found Sogahara-senpai standing between Building C and the Student Council wing, looking like he’d been waiting for us.
”Sogahara-senpai! Good morning!” I said, giving him a deep bow of genuine thanks.
There was no question that his advice had leveled up the quality of my training.
”Morning, Tsuchimiya-kun. Your posture… it’s night and day. You look like a different man,” Sogahara-senpai replied.
He returned the greeting with his usual effortless charm. But in that heartbeat, I felt the air turn brittle.
”…Everyone, get back,” I muttered.
I stepped forward, signaling a wary Fujisaki to stay down. Sogahara-senpai matched my pace, moving toward me. Words were unnecessary. He wanted to see the results for himself.
I stopped at a three-meter gap and leveled the Kondou Spear⁸. Simultaneously, Sogahara-senpai drew his live blade in one fluid, blurring motion. Before I could even register his Seigan⁹ stance, his sword-tip grazed the spear with a light, parrying clink.
The signal: “Here I go.”
In the next breath, the tip was lunging for my throat. It followed a trajectory so perfect it felt dictated by the laws of the universe, making my sense of time simply evaporate. For some reason, my brain didn’t even flag it as a dangerous attack. It was like standing in a gentle breeze-the kind where you don’t realize you’re dead until it’s over. It was a stroke that harvested life by slipping through the very cracks of your survival instinct.
But my body moved on its own. Like a stalk of grass swaying in the wind, I drifted just out of the path of the blade. Before, I wouldn’t have even been able to track it, but now I saw it with crystal clarity. I was almost admiring the beauty of that arc when the blade suddenly rotated 90 degrees, its edge snapping toward me.
”Gah!?”
While screaming in my heart, I desperately crouched down, and the lethal edge whistled through the space my head had occupied a millisecond ago.
A neck-swipe following a flat-thrust!? What is he, the damn Shinsengumi¹⁰!?
”Impressive, Tsuchimiya-kun. You really have sharpened your skills,” Sogahara-senpai said.
”Y-ye-yes sir…” I stammered.
Sogahara-senpai sheathed his sword, his teeth flashing in a brilliant smile.
If I hadn’t dodged that, what would have happened!? Sogahara-senpai is freaking terrifying!
”Heading to the 5th floor? I’ll head down once I wrap up my business here. See you in a bit,” he said.
”Y-yes!” I replied.
Sogahara-senpai gave a casual wave and turned on his heel, heading back toward the dojo.
”Phew…”
I wiped the sweat from my brow and forced my feet to move again. Unconsciously, I summoned a wind spirit to blow a breeze my way. These guys are basically portable electric fans-they’re a godsend. They were absolute lifesavers in the desert.
”Takeru… that guy… he’s on a whole different level of bad news,” Fujisaki said.
Her face was pale. With her heightened sensory skills, she’d probably felt the true depth of his lethality.
”Yeah, that’s Sogahara-senpai. You want to be careful around him. In every possible way,” I warned.
Fujisaki might look like a villainess, but she’s a knockout. I didn’t want to say it out loud, but if the timing was right, a guy like him might just make her his next “target.”
”Tsuchimiya-senpai, don’t you go dropping your guard around him either,” Higurashi whispered.
”Right…” I said.
True. Considering he just tried to decapitate me under the guise of “training,” I couldn’t afford to forget the “always on the battlefield” mindset.
* * *
”The future of the Academy rests on each of our shoulders! Now that we are one, we have nothing to fear! We will meet tomorrow together-every last one of us!”
Once the first and second waves were assembled in the 5th floor’s safe zone, Karen stood at the front to fire everyone up. A roar like a localized earthquake erupted from the crowd, their spirits bolstered by Karen’s Morale Boost skill. Led by Sogahara-senpai, the first-wave students began filing into the northern corridor.
”Ugh… everyone, please be careful!” Chikako cried.
”Yeah, we’ll be fine. Chikako, Akari-I’m counting on you two to watch Karen’s back,” I said.
”You got it. Leave it to us,” Akari replied.
I’d decided to leave Chikako and Akari behind to guard Karen. Karen was going to hold a school-wide assembly to explain the situation and drop a massive morale buff before joining the second wave herself. She’d insisted on being in the first wave, but the Student Council had practically tackled her to stop her.
After parting ways with them, we headed for the first-wave staging room. The sweepers had already done their jobs, so the route was monster-free. Once the perimeter was clear, the operation would officially begin.
Entering from the west, we found nearly fifty students gathered near the entrance. The dim room was massive, with exits in all four directions and wide corridors. According to the plan, we were supposed to lure the ‘Beast’ in from the east. The north exit was completely sealed with stone pillars created by earth magic, while the south exit was narrowed down to a tiny gap for support staff and the wounded. As we walked in, mages were already narrowing the west entrance behind us with more stone pillars.
”Maekawa-senpai! Good morning, Ma’am!”
A girl with an unforgettable look gave an unnecessarily loud, deep bow.
”Oh, Onitsuka-san. Morning,” Maekawa-senpai replied.
Onitsuka-san was the partner of that delinquent Haraguchi, and she was the embodiment of a classic Showa-era “Yankee.” She had a long, permed brunette mane and heavy, aggressive makeup that made her look like a heel pro-wrestler. To top it off, she was wearing a sailor-style school uniform with a skirt that dragged on the floor.
”Ain’t Satou-姐姐 with ya? Oh! Good morning, Boss-lady!” Onitsuka-san shouted.
For whatever reason, Onitsuka-san completely ignored the rest of us and bowed toward Fujisaki, despite having never met her.
”Huh? Oh… morning…” Fujisaki stammered.
Fujisaki looked at Onitsuka-san like she was a newly discovered species of cryptid before managing a confused reply.
”Akari’s a Scout, so she’s sitting out the first wave,” I explained. “She’s guarding Amahara-senpai right now.”
”Scout, huh? That’s a damn shame. Lady’s invincible in a fistfight; she’d be a natural in the vanguard. Reckon she’d adapt in a heartbeat,” Onitsuka-san said.
”Our party’s already heavy on vanguards,” Maekawa-senpai said. “Besides, Akari actually has the talent for scouting.”
It was true. Akari actually did scouting work properly, unlike Himeno who just relied on raw power. Wiping out three mobs by yourself and coming back to say “The path is clear!” isn’t scouting. It’s being a weapon of mass destruction. Plus, her hand-drawn maps are basically undecipherable chicken scratch.
”Is Akari really that strong?” I asked.
I’d noticed Akari’s center of gravity was always rock-solid-she clearly had training-but she wasn’t exactly a weapon master.
”Yeah,” Maekawa-senpai said. “She once threw me so hard I cracked a utility pole.”
Ah. Right. I’d been curiosity, but that was clearly a can of worms I was better off not opening.
”B-by the way, Onitsuka-san, are you in the magic artillery squad?” I asked.
”Nah, I’m on the patch-up crew. Seems like there ain’t many folks who can use healing magic, so I got stuck with it,” Onitsuka-san replied.
”Wait, you can use healing magic!?” I asked.
”Yeah. Don’t know if it’s ’cause my folks run a shrine or what, but I ended up with the ‘Shrine Maiden’ class¹¹,” Onitsuka-san said.
That was the last thing I expected. I’d never even seen a healer class in person before. Looking at her now, I guess that long skirt could almost be seen as a pair of hakama… no, I’m reaching.
”The magic artillery squad’s got our gloomy mage in it. That kid’s attack power is straight-up cheating. Don’t know what a ‘Beast’ is, but if they get a hit in, that thing’s gonna be mincemeat in one shot,” Onitsuka-san added.
”Is that so…” I muttered.
That was a hell of a lot of confidence. Maybe she could only say that because she hadn’t seen the thing yet, but it was still reassuring.
”See? That little dark cloud over there. Name’s Hoshikawa Kirari,” Onitsuka-san said.
She pointed to a petite girl standing apart from the group, draped in a pitch-black robe. Hoshikawa Kirari had her hood pulled low and her head down, hiding her face. She looked like the literal definition of a black mage. Himeno looked similar when she had her Shadowstride Cloak in “Robe Mode,” but right now she was wearing it as a mantle.
”Vanguards! Over here!” Sogahara-senpai shouted.
”Alright, we’re heading over,” I said.
After parting from Tomoko, Kanon, and Higurashi, the four of us-me, Himeno, Fujisaki, and Hiromi-headed toward Sogahara-senpai.
—
Summary:
Takeru introduces Fujisaki Kaede to the rest of the clan as they prepare for the ‘Last Survivor’ operation. The group deals with the awkwardness of Fujisaki’s scary demeanor and her self-proclaimed ‘s*x slave’ status. Amidst the tension, the characters discuss their physical growth and future hopes as they prepare for a final defense of the Academy.
Takeru and his group prepare for the 5th floor raid. After a brief but terrifying sparring match with Sogahara-senpai, the first-wave students assemble. They meet Onitsuka, a ‘Shrine Maiden’ healer with a delinquent aesthetic, as they prepare to lure out the ‘Beast’.
—
Trivia:
- Time dilation: 4 months on the Trash Floor equals only 1 day in the Academy.
- Evolds have heightened sensitivity/reactions to s*xual jokes.
- Fujisaki’s smartphone was restored by Tina using magic-based electricity.
- Hiromi’s ‘Future Sight’ and ‘Evil Eye’ are kept secret from Fujisaki and Karen.
- The ‘Last Survivor’ mission involves a 30-minute delay due to gear distribution.
- Medium Recovery Potions are rare and don’t typically drop on the 5th floor.
- Takeru is using wind spirits as portable cooling fans.
- Satou Akari is canonically strong enough to throw a person through a utility pole bare-handed.
- The ‘Shrine Maiden’ class is rare enough that Takeru hasn’t seen a healer class until now
—
Character Insight:
Fujisaki Kaede shows a massive ‘gap moe’ by being terrifyingly strong and high-level but socially awkward and eager to make friends. Takeru’s physical growth is a direct result of the ‘Trash Floor’ survival training.
Takeru shows massive growth in reaction time and instincts, dodging Sogahara-senpai’s lethal ‘perfect’ strike. Sogahara-senpai is revealed to be friendly but dangerously committed to ‘training’.
—
Behind the Scenes:
The author uses the ‘s*x slave’ misunderstanding as a comedic relief tool to break the heavy military tension before the operation starts.
The character Onitsuka is a parody of the ‘Sukeban’ subculture of the 80s, mixed with the irony of being a holy Miko.
