Chapter 142 Decisive Battle! vs. Beast

Edited by: Kanaa-senpai

The Beast tramped forward through the flames. Its sheer presence weighed down on the raiding party, pinning them to the spot in a cold sweat.

 ”Archery squad, begin your attack!”

At Captain Higurashi’s command, the archery club members stepped forward in their hakama and unleashed a unified volley.

”Apply support magic to the vanguard!”

Following Higurashi’s instructions, the support mages boosted our attack power and defense. Fortunately, no one succumbed to panic. (I don’t know what would have happened if it weren’t for Karen’s Morale Boost.) The arrows fired by the archery club were clearly enhanced by skills or magic; some flew with unnatural speed, while others were wreathed in flame. However, they simply bounced off the Beast’s armor-like carapace.

The creature’s shell was even more reinforced than the last time I had seen it. There used to be visible gaps at the shoulder and elbow joints, but now additional plates resembling pauldrons had been added, making it look like a true suit of armor.

Even the belly and flanks were covered in small, scale-like plates that overlapped so tightly the seams were invisible. This was going to be troublesome. The Beast didn’t just have that physical shell; its defensive barriers were also formidable.

Sporadic magic attacks flew toward it, but the Beast didn’t even flinch. Judging by the white steam rising from its body-heat generated by its regeneration-the initial concentrated barrage hadn’t been zero damage, but the effect was negligible. I turned my eyes toward Hoshikawa-san. Clad in black robes, she was gripping her staff and muttering under her breath.

(Open, Gate of the Leo… O’ breath of stars from beyond Havala…)

”Tina, is she chanting an incantation?” I asked. I was under the impression that players were usually equipped with Chant Shortening¹ as standard, making long recitations unnecessary.

”That is a Great Magic chant,” Tina replied. “It involves intricately weaving multiple spells into a complex formula, making simple shortening difficult. The casting time is long, but the power is absolute. To be able to use Great Magic at a beginner level makes her a very rare existence. A beginner’s mana capacity shouldn’t even be able to keep up… Oh, wait. That girl has an incredible title.”

(Can we actually rely on this?) I wondered. I wanted to shave off as much of its health as possible before we entered close-quarters combat.

”Archery squad, fall back! Deploy obstacles! Fire-attribute users, cease fire!”

Following Higurashi’s orders, the archers retreated, and three stone pillars sprouted in a lattice formation to block the entrance of the room. The Beast was already right in front of them.

”Will Hoshikawa-san make it in time?!” Higurashi asked.

”If the obstacles hold, she’ll be fine!” Onitsuka-san replied.

The Beast accelerated, slamming its arm into the center stone pillar. The stone shattered like glass. It was a literal kaiju.

 ”Permafrost!”

Tomoko swung her Nectar Staff at the Beast the moment it paused. Frost instantly coated the creature’s surface, grinding its movements to a halt. (So that was why we had to stop the fire attacks.)

 ”Hoshikawa-san!”

At Higurashi’s call, Hoshikawa-san thrust out her staff. A massive magic circle materialized at the tip, and I felt a sudden, violent surge of mana. The other mages raised their staves in unison, timing their spells to hers.

 ”Flow! Stardust—”

 ”No! Stop the attack!!”

Suddenly, Hiromi screamed and lunged at Hoshikawa-san, tackling her to restrain her. The chant was cut off and the magic circle vanished. While some mages stopped upon hearing Hiromi’s voice, most had already swung their staves down. Various offensive spells flew toward the Beast, but for some reason, they never reached it. The magic vanished just before hitting the creature, as if blocked by an invisible wall.

”Tomo-chan! Everyone! Deploy Magic Defense Barriers!”

 ”Got it!” Tomoko replied.

Responding to Hiromi’s desperate voice, Tomoko raised her staff to cast a mana barrier. A Magic Defense Barrier is a basic skill that dampens the power of incoming spells by clashing mana against them. However, at our current level, there are very few monsters that actually use magic, so its applications are limited. Only a few people managed to react to Hiromi’s warning in time. In the next instant, a barrage of attacks erupted from the Beast. Multiple offensive spells shot out toward the mages.

 ”Gwaaah!?”

It was a magical ambush. Lightning, earth, and wind magic-the exact spells our mages had fired-struck the lines. The barriers deployed by a few people protected those nearby, but they were only effective enough to weaken the impact. The Beast’s magic swept through the mages, even catching the heavy infantry who were supposed to be guarding them.

However, the barrier Tomoko had cast completely neutralized the Beast’s assault. This was likely the effect of the immense mana residing within the Nectar Staff. Her barrier was wide enough to protect the students directly in front of the Beast. Because Tomoko was near us, the attack didn’t reach us either. Still, nearly half of the magic artillery squad was in a state of total collapse.

”Cease long-range attacks! Magic artillery squad, fall back! Vanguard, move forward! Rescue and escort teams, hurry and recover the wounded!” Higurashi barked orders with a stone-cold poker face.

”Tina! Did that just reflect the magic?!” I asked.

”No…!” Tina said. “Rather than reflection, it looked like it absorbed the magic first, changed the vector, and then fired it back!”

”Absorbed it? Come to think of it, that thing had ‘Storage’²! It can be used like that!?”

”No matter how high the rank of Storage is, storing an entire offensive spell should be impossible! If it can do that…! But, surely that can’t be…”

 ”Tsuchimiya-senpai! What happened?” Higurashi asked.

”It’s absorbing our attacks before firing them back! It’s a high-tier evolution of Storage!” I shouted back.

We didn’t have all the facts, but there was no time to dawdle. The Beast began to move with a mechanical grinding sound and finally stepped into the room. The ice covering its surface melted away, and steam hissed from the gaps in its armor. From its height of over three meters, it looked down at us slowly, as if scouting for its next prey.

We in the vanguard moved forward to swap places with the retreating magic artillery squad.

”That was a close call…” Hiromi sighed, her face pale with relief. The situation was bad enough, but if Hoshikawa-san’s Great Magic had been triggered and sent back at us, the casualties wouldn’t have been limited to this.

 ”Watarase-san! Flare Missile!”

Higurashi issued a command to Kanon, who was retreating alongside Tomoko. Three arrows of orange light flew toward the Beast. They appeared to vanish just before impact, only to reappear and fly back toward us. However, the three Flare Missiles suddenly pulled a sharp U-turn, looping through the air to strike the Beast directly.

 ”Gah!?”

The Beast appeared confused. (I see—missile-type magic has auto-homing. Simply changing the direction of the spell isn’t enough to overwrite the target.)

”Hurry up with the wounded! Refrain from all long-range attacks except for missile-type magic! That thing will even fire back arrows!”

As Higurashi’s voice rang out, the vanguard squared off against the Beast. Magic Missiles flew toward the creature, but they did no damage, and the Beast ignored them entirely. The four of us stood in the center, Sogahara-senpai’s trio took the right, and the four members of Demiurge lined up on the left.

”Hey. If Kibakura charges in, I’ll stop him,” Moriya (Demiurge second-in-command) said.

”Yeah, I’m counting on you. Leave the backup to me, Moriya-kun,” Sogahara replied.

The Beast stopped, letting out a low growl while observing us. Since its belly was somewhat full, it wasn’t in a state of pure frenzy. The fact that it didn’t attack immediately helped us, but this calculating state was just as dangerous.

”Himeno, Fujisaki, don’t let your guard down. It looks like a monster, but it’s smart. It’s bare-handed now, but with Storage, it can pull out a weapon at any time,” I warned.

 ”Yes!” Himeno said.

”You’re telling me this is beginner level? This is more than enough of a monster!” Fujisaki added, her face deathly pale.

 ”Sogahara-senpai! Preparations are complete!”

Togamine’s voice echoed from behind. It seemed the formation for the Togamine unit guarding the rearguard was set. We couldn’t expect cover fire from the rearguard anymore, but they served as the final defensive line to ensure the Beast didn’t reach the safe zone.

 ”Alright! Begin the attack!”

At Higurashi’s signal, the vanguard lunged forward. Sogahara-senpai’s group ran to the right, Demiurge to the left, and Himeno closed the distance like a blur, thrusting the black spear, Izayoi, into the center of the Beast’s chest.

However, blocked by the thickest part of the chest carapace, Himeno’s attack failed to pierce. The Beast swung a claw down, but she slipped away to the rear in an instant. Taking advantage of the opening, Fujisaki slashed at its belly as she passed by. Sparks flew off the scale-like armor, but the attack didn’t penetrate.

Fujisaki spun around and slashed from behind while Himeno thrust Izayoi into the back of the Beast’s knee. The Beast lost its balance. Having closed the distance a moment later, I used Blast to lunge straight in from the front. The belly armor Fujisaki had struck was slightly cracked.

”I’m going full power! Get back!”

Without even waiting to see Himeno and Fujisaki retreat, I thrust the Kondou Spear forward and triggered Blast at the base of the shaft.

 ”Ballista!”

The accelerated Kondou Spear tore through the defensive barrier, pried open the flaw in the carapace, and sank deep into the Beast’s abdomen. If I had missed, the momentum would have ripped the spear from my hands.

 ”And now—Blue Thunder Seven Fang!!”

Fangs of light materialized in alternating patterns along the sides of the Kondou Spear, and I felt my mana being drained in a massive gulp. In the next heartbeat, my vision was swallowed by a pale blue flash.

 ”Hrrngh!? Gaaaaah!!”

Successive flashes and thunderclaps roared repeatedly as the Beast writhed in agony, letting out a piercing shriek. Along with the seventh lightning strike, I twisted the Kondou Spear and yanked it out as I leaped back. The Beast, now emitting actual white smoke, collapsed to its knees.

The rear erupted into ecstatic cheers. “He did it!” “The ‘Last Survivor’ actually took it down!?” “Did we actually defeat him!?”

Then, Himeno and Fujisaki slashed from behind while Captain Saegusa and Katsura-kun struck from the flanks with their dao, but their blades were repelled by the thick carapace. Sogahara-senpai aimed for the neck, but he too was blocked by the shell; the attacks simply weren’t getting through. When Moriya (Demiurge second-in-command) and Magara Kiyotaka (Demiurge war-hammer user, elder Magara brother) brought down their greatsword and war hammer with full force, the Beast’s massive frame finally shuddered.

(Weight-based weapons really are the right counter for this…) I thought.

Nearby, Iwakura Eiji (Demiurge officer, axe user) and Sumiya (Magara Kiyotaka’s younger brother, Demiurge ability user) stayed slightly back, observing the chaotic frontline. Sumiya was lightly equipped and seemed to hold the same position as Hiromi, but I couldn’t tell if Iwakura was wary of friendly fire in the tight space or if he was simply hesitating to strike Kibakura. Brother Magara wound up his war hammer once more, delivering a horizontal blow to the Beast’s chest that rang out with a dull, bone-jarring thud.

”Alright! I felt that!” Magara yelled. “The weight debuff is working!”

Just then, the Beast’s eyes rolled in their sockets and locked onto Brother Magara.

 ”Bro! Look out!” Sumiya screamed.

The moment Sumiya’s voice rang out, the Beast’s right arm lunged toward Brother Magara. Its wide-open hand reached out as if to crush his head in a pincer grip. However, Moriya intervened, bracing a tower shield that looked like a giant steel drum cut in half. He threw himself between them and caught the Beast’s hand.

 ”Fall back, Kiyotaka!” Moriya barked.

 ”O-Oh!” Magara stammered.

Brother Magara scrambled to retreat while Moriya thrust his greatsword forward, and the surrounding vanguard slashed at the Beast all at once. I also thrust my Kondou spear into its chest, but it merely bounced off the armor. (If I don’t do something about this thick plating, prying out that Sacred Artifact card is going to be impossible…)

Magic missiles peppered the target, but the Beast stood up as if the attacks didn’t even exist. It swiped a hand behind itself to ward off Fujisaki. It seemed to despise attacks from Fujisaki, likely due to her high damage modifiers. As I’d expected, the damn thing just stood right back up. It was even more durable than a Giant Roper.

 ”Everyone, get back!” Hiromi warned.

Startled by her voice, I looked at the Beast and saw a long iron club suddenly gripped in its right hand.

”Fall back!” Sogahara-senpai shouted while leaping away.

With lightning-fast reactions, the entire group scrambled to open up some distance. That insanely fast swing had a distinct wind-up before it was unleashed—maybe that was a skill, too. As I pondered this, the Beast dropped its center of gravity and took a massive, winding swing with the iron club. Everyone had already retreated quite a bit, but we backed off even further out of caution. Yet, since long-range attacks were useless, we were eventually going to have to step back into that thing’s reach.

The Beast glared at me, and I could see it tensing its entire body. (Does it plan to do something from that distance?)

”Takeru-kun! Togamine-san! Dodge!” Hiromi’s voice rang out again.

Togamine? She should have been positioned far behind us. The moment the Beast, myself, and Togamine lined up in a straight line in my mind, I understood the warning. The moment the Beast swung the iron club, I activated Blast. A straight torrent of air, like a jet stream, grazed my body. Looking back, I saw Togamine—who had been a second too late to react—being sent spinning like a top. The shield she had instinctively braced hit the high ceiling and fell to the floor. The shockwave slammed into the far wall, shaking the entire room as a gale blew through.

 (You bastard, are you serious…?)

”Support Magicians, take Togamine-san and evacuate to the south passage!” Higurashi ordered calmly. “Magic artillery squad, if you don’t have any usable magic other than missiles, withdraw! Get past the corner!”

”Permafrost!” Tomoko shouted, and the Beast was covered in frost once again.

It seemed even it couldn’t deflect area-of-effect magic. Sogahara-senpai from the side, and Fujisaki and Himeno from behind, all closed the distance at once to slash at the Beast. If we stayed at a distance, that shockwave attack would come again. I steeled my resolve and charged.

However, Katsura Keita-kun (Katsura-kun, first-year vanguard in Sogahara-senpai’s party) and Saegusa Mitsuki-senpai (Captain Saegusa, third-year vanguard in Sogahara-senpai’s party), who tried to reach the Beast faster than I did, were blown away together by a single swing of the iron club.

I somehow managed to stand my ground and weather the strike.

”It can move already!?” I yelled.

’This guy… it looks like its resistance increases against any attack it’s taken once!’ Tina’s voice echoed in my head. ‘They say King Ogres steal the abilities of the monsters they eat!’

Which meant my Blue Thunder Seven Fang wouldn’t be as effective as before. (Can we really defeat a guy like this!?)

”Guard unit, recover those two!” Higurashi shouted.

Hearing his voice, I dodged the iron club and dove into the Beast’s personal space. As expected, the abdominal carapace I’d broken earlier was already starting to heal. I thrust the Kondou spear in once more, and this time, the attack managed to bite.

”Magic is less effective than before!” someone cried out.

”Just keep charging! We have no choice but to keep hitting it!” Magara shouted.

Brother Magara and Moriya charged in side-by-side. Moriya caught the swung iron club with his tower shield.

 ”Haaaah!” Magara grunted.

Taking that opening, Brother Magara slammed his war hammer into the Beast’s stomach. That was the third hit. I didn’t know how much the weight-increase debuff was helping, but it was about the only thing we could rely on.

”Hey! How long are you going to stand there, Iwakura! You chickening out!?” Sumiya barked.

Everyone’s attacks were landing, but the damage was just too shallow. I couldn’t see a breakthrough. We needed Iwakura, who had special effects, to join the fray immediately.

”Send your vanguard over here!” Higurashi was barking into his smartphone. “Projectiles and magic don’t work on him at all! We have to stop him right here! Yeah, of course! We’re definitely going to need President Amahara’s strength!”

I stood in front of the Beast to act as a decoy, parrying its strikes. In the openings I created, Sogahara-senpai, Himeno, and Fujisaki launched their assaults, but whenever Brother Magara tried to get close, the Beast changed targets to keep him at bay. It really did dislike his weight debuff. But at this rate, Brother Magara—who was on the slower side—wouldn’t be able to land a blow.

 ”Go, Sumiya!” Magara commanded.

 ”On it!” Sumiya replied.

Brother Magara gave the order while bracing his war hammer. Sumiya charged the Beast, wielding dual short swords. For some reason, the Beast seemed wary and swung its iron club at Sumiya, but he dodged nimbly and dove into its reach. In the next instant, Brother Magara, who had been winding up his war hammer in the distance, slammed an attack into the Beast’s chest. Sumiya was now standing where Magara had been. (Did he swap positions with a skill!?)

As the Beast recoiled, it thrust out its sharp, jagged carapace knee and kicked Brother Magara upward.

 ”Gwah!” Magara coughed.

The knee strike lifted Brother Magara off his feet, and the Beast raised its iron club to finish him. But the moment the attack was about to connect, Magara swapped places with Sumiya. Sumiya took the hit in mid-air and was blown away, tumbling toward the back of the room. It was a direction that would take time to recover him from.

”Sumiya!” Magara screamed as he dropped to one knee, coughing up blood.

The Beast pursued Sumiya while raising its iron club. (Does it intend to crush the troublesome duo first!?) But before it could, Sogahara-senpai stood in its way.

 ”Come! Kibakura-kun!” Sogahara challenged.

His sword, held in a middle guard, was wrapped in violent winds that whipped up his golden hair.

 ”Guooooh!” the Beast roared.

The Beast roared as it charged, its raised arm drawn back as tight as a bowstring. That was the sign of the light-speed swing. Sogahara-senpai was concentrating, a crazed, joyful smile on his face. The sheer intensity of it sent a chill down my spine.

The moment the Beast stepped in, the iron club was swung down. A clear metallic ring was followed by a violent crashing sound. The far wall was pulverized as the iron club bounced back. For a second, I thought the club had slipped out of its hand, but the Beast, standing before the downward-swinging Sogahara-senpai, was holding only a jagged fragment of the iron club.

(He didn’t just parry it—she cut it off!? Sogahara-senpai is amazing!)

”Get out of the way, Vice President Sogahara! You’ll get caught up!” Iwakura warned.

Iwakura leaped at the Beast’s back, swinging a massive battle axe.

”Uoooooh! Black Thunder Decay Claw!” Iwakura roared.

The pitch-black battle axe crackled with black lightning. The axe slammed into the Beast’s back and bit deep into the thick carapace. Black lightning coiled around the Beast’s entire body, and it let out a death-throe-like scream. Steam erupted from the Beast’s entire body.

Even after Iwakura pulled the axe out, the black lightning remained clung to its form. As the Beast writhed, the carapace around its waist crumbled and fell away—the same area Fujisaki had slashed repeatedly. (Is it corroded and brittle now!?)

(I’ll finish this in one go!)

As I stepped toward the Beast’s back, Sogahara-senpai tried to dive into its personal space even faster than me. A jagged fragment of the iron club hit the floor with a metallic clang.

 ”Look out!” Hiromi screamed.

In the Beast’s right hand, it now gripped a massive war hammer shrouded in red lightning. The Beast twisted its body and swung the hammer down. Vice President Sogahara stopped her feet and leapt back; the hammer crushed the floor with a massive impact.

 ”Guaaaaaah!” Sogahara shrieked.

Sogahara-senpai had dodged the direct hit, but red lightning connecting the floor to the ceiling pierced through his body.

 ”Sogahara-senpai!” I cried out.

”You bastard, do you really not recognize us!?” Iwakura yelled.

Iwakura slashed from behind, but the Beast swung the war hammer with one hand and swatted him away. Iwakura, taking a direct hit to the stomach, was sent flying with red lightning coiling around him. As an afterthought, the Beast slammed the war hammer toward the kneeling Sogahara-senpai as well.

”Himeno! Take care of Sogahara-senpai and the others!” I ordered.

 ”Y… Yes!” Himeno stammered.

Himeno hesitated for a moment, then chased after Sogahara-senpai, who was tumbling toward the back of the room.

(‘Appraisal result…! That war hammer is Grain Zapper! The sacred artifact used by the thunder god Thor in mythology!’ Tina’s voice panicked in my head. ‘Its skill isn’t “Storage” after all—it’s “Treasury”! If that’s the case, it might have hundreds or thousands of sacred artifacts like that!’)

(Grain Zapper? Sacred artifact? Treasury? It’s too much information!)

Anyway, I had no choice. I had to drive the Kondou spear into its chest and pry out that sacred artifact card. Just as the Beast turned back toward me, Fujisaki appeared out of nowhere and ran toward it.

”Fujisaki! Destroy the chest armor!” I yelled.

With a fierce smile, Fujisaki dodged the swung war hammer and dove into its reach. (Alright! We can do this!)

 ”Run! Kaede!” Hiromi screamed.

At the same time as Hiromi’s scream, the Beast opened its mouth wide. A white light overflowed from deep within. A shell-like blast of flame hit Fujisaki directly with a bone-rattling boom.

 ”Fujisaki!” I yelled.

 ”Kaede!” Hiromi cried.

 (What!? A breath attack!?)

Fujisaki was gone. Her tattered jersey fluttered in the air, catching fire and burning. (No, stay calm! Fujisaki is safe. Since she disappeared, she must have activated Absolute Escape to get away.) But the vanguard was decimated. (Can I do this alone!?)

The Beast approached, raising the war hammer shrouded in red lightning.

(‘As long as it’s holding that weapon, lightning attacks won’t work! Please run!’)

(I can’t let it through here! I have to buy time until everyone can regroup!)

 ”Takeru-kun! No! Run!” Hiromi pleaded.

(Focus! I have some resistance to lightning, too!)

More power surged into the Beast’s arm. Its elbow moved slightly. (It’s coming!) I’d seen the light-speed swing so many times that I knew the timing. As for the path, I just had to hope my body moved on instinct. The hammer head wasn’t something I could parry, so I would have to charge inside at the final acceleration.

The moment the Beast’s arm vanished, all noise cut out. The trajectory of the hammer head was behind my head. I cleared it! I ducked while parrying the handle with my spear. I would dodge and slam a counter Ballista into its chest.

Suddenly, my vision spun upside down. It was only then that I recognized the impact to my head. (I couldn’t dodge it!?)

After seeing the ceiling three times, I was slammed onto the floor on my back.

(Ah, this is bad. I might die here.)

In the corner of my vision, I saw the Beast raising the war hammer toward me.

 Summary:

The raid squad engages a heavily armored Beast that reveals a terrifying ‘Storage’ ability, allowing it to absorb and redirect magic attacks. Hiromi prevents a catastrophic friendly-fire incident by stopping Hoshikawa-san’s Great Magic before it could be countered. The protagonist finally brings the Beast to its knees using a high-risk combo involving ‘Ballista’ and ‘Blue Thunder Seven Fang’.

Then, takeru attempts a desperate solo stand against the Beast following the collapse of the vanguard. Despite correctly timing a dodge against the creature’s light-speed swing, he is inexplicably struck and grounded. The chapter ends with the Beast preparing a finishing move while Takeru struggles with the reality of his imminent death.

 —

 Trivia:

 - The Beast’s armor has evolved since the last encounter, covering previous weak points like joints.

 - Missile-type magic is unique because it auto-homes, making the Beast’s redirection less effective.

 - Tomoko’s Nectar Staff is significantly more powerful than standard equipment, allowing her to block attacks that crippled others.

 - Tina hints that Hoshikawa-san has a rare ‘Title’ explaining her high mana capacity at a beginner level.

 - Homing magic (missiles) cannot be redirected to new targets because the target is locked into the spell itself.

 - The Beast’s armor evolved specifically to cover previous joint weaknesses.

 - Tomoko’s Nectar Staff provides a barrier far superior to standard Magic Defense Barriers.

 - The Beast is addressed as ‘Kibakura’ by Sogahara, suggesting it was once a student.

 - The hammer ‘Grane Zapper’ grants the Beast lightning immunity while held.

 - Takeru’s own lightning resistance is what gave him the confidence to stay.

 - The noise cut out during the light-speed swing, indicating a vacuum or sonic effect.

 - Absolute Escape (Vanish Step) was Fujisaki’s last known action

 —

 Character Insight:

Hiromi shows exceptional battlefield awareness by identifying the Beast’s redirection mechanism before anyone else. The protagonist demonstrates a high level of technical mastery by using ‘Blast’ on his own spear’s pommel to create a makeshift railgun effect.

Takeru’s self-sacrificial nature is highlighted here; he prioritizes buying time for the regrouping party over his own survival, even when faced with a ‘death sentence’ weapon.

 —

 Lore And Worldbuilding Context:

The naming of the spear ‘Kondou’ alongside ‘Ballista’ suggests a blend of Japanese naming traditions with Western siege-engine terminology common in ‘isekai’ or ‘game-system’ genre web novels.

The shift from ‘Storage’ to ‘Treasure Vault’ (Houmotsuko) is a common trope where a basic skill is revealed to be a high-tier broken ability.

The ‘Vanish Step’ vs ‘Absolute Escape’ naming reflects the struggle between literal system terms and the character’s internal combat vocabulary.
