Chapter 145 Desire

Edited by: Kanaa-senpai

”According to our calendar, June begins today. I’m told there isn’t a typical rainy season here, but expect the number of downpours to increase, so you’d all be wise to have your rain gear ready. Also, I have a new transfer student to introduce to everyone today.”

The classroom erupted into a low, uneasy buzz at the words of Minazuki-sensei, who stood at the podium in place of the Class President.

”Fujisaki-san, you can come in now.”

The rear door slid open with a sharp clatter.

As Fujisaki entered the room draped in a crisp, brand-new uniform, the atmosphere shifted into total chaos.

 ”A transfer student!?”

”Wait, seriously!? How is that even possible!?”

The general student body was still in the dark about the fact that other schools had been summoned to this world.

To them, a new student wasn’t just a surprise—it was a total impossibility.

As Fujisaki navigated the rows of desks and turned to face the class in front of the whiteboard, the air grew suffocatingly tense.

With her naturally sharp, predatory eyes, she looked less like a student and more like a high-ranking villainess from a dark organization cornered by a hero of justice.

”I… I’m the transfer student, Fujisaki Kaede. People tell me I look… intimidating… but I’d be… really happy if we could be friends.”

Fujisaki-san gave a stiff, jerky bow.

Sensing no immediate threat, a wave of visible relief washed over the classroom.

 ”If anyone has any questions—”

 ”Me! Me! I do!”

 ”Over here!!”

 ”Yo!”

Hands shot up across the room before Minazuki-sensei could even finish her sentence.

”Alright, Nonaka-san. Introduce yourself first, then ask away,” said Minazuki.

”Right! I’m Nonaka Kotone! So, Fujisaki-san, where exactly did you come from? Are there really other schools out there that got summoned too!?”

”Yes, there are. My school… we were brought to this world about a year ago,” replied Fujisaki-san.

The room turned into a hornet’s nest of whispers.

I couldn’t blame them; it was a lot to take in.

”Everyone, settle down! Let Fujisaki-san finish!”

The Class President stood up, her voice cutting through the noise to restore order.

”Um, regarding the details… the Student Council is monitoring the situation and will release more info soon. I’ve been told to keep it under wraps for now, so there’s a lot I can’t talk about yet,” Fujisaki-san explained.

That seemed to cool their jets a bit.

The mere fact that she was here was enough to confirm the existence of other schools—that was a big enough win for day one.

Amahara-senpai had already been briefed by Fujisaki, but the Council had been too slammed yesterday to coordinate.

Once things settled, they’d likely bring her in for a formal debrief.

The truth—that the world outside was crawling with hostiles and that we ‘newcomers’ were the bottom of the food chain—was a recipe for a total meltdown.

Amahara-senpai’s call to unify the Academy before dealing with the outside world was the right move.

 ”Next… Akiyama-kun,” said Minazuki.

”I’m Akiyama Yuuki. Fujisaki-chan, I saw you with Tsuchimiya during the first wave yesterday. Are you two friends or something?” asked Akiyama.

”Oh, him? No. I was brought to this Academy to serve as Takeru’s s*x slave,” Fujisaki-san said.

The silence that followed was deafening, followed by a collective, visceral gasp as every head in the room whipped around to glare at me with pure, unadulterated judgment.

(Hey! Fujisaki! What the hell are you saying!?)

* * *

After stopping by the Student Council for a quick debrief, Higurashi Asuka treated herself to a few tea snacks before heading out.

She paused at a second-story window in the Student Council wing, looking down at the perfectly manicured lawn of the courtyard.

 The breeze was refreshing.

From here, she had a clear view of the cafeteria and the Teleportation Facility that loomed beyond it like an ancient temple.

Even though it was still morning, the recently opened cafeteria was already peppered with students.

She had a moment of peace, but the afternoon would be grueling.

The Student Council and the Student Freedom Alliance were holding another joint representative meeting.

They were effectively becoming the government of the Academy, and the pressure to build a functional system from scratch was immense.

The talks yesterday had dragged on until late at night.

She’d tried to be the voice of reason, but there were always those who stubbornly refused to budge.

By the time she’d crawled back to her room, she was spent—only to find a four-way session with Watarase Kanon, Nishina Tomoko, and Tsuchimiya-senpai waiting for her.

She’d planned to take her frustrations out on Tsuchimiya-senpai with the other two, but somehow, the tables had turned.

The three of them had tag-teamed her so relentlessly that she’d blacked out early on.

When she finally came to, it was morning.

(Better to just pretend that never happened.)

Shaking off the memory, Higurashi focused on the tasks ahead.

Just as she was about to turn away, she spotted someone walking through the courtyard toward the school buildings.

It was Vice President Sogahara Takashi.

His golden hair caught the light as he walked, and in his hand, he carried an elegant, silver-colored sheath bag.

(He’s alone… skipping him now would be a mistake. This is the moment.)

Higurashi checked her surroundings, then vaulted onto the window frame and threw herself into the air.

The wind whistled past her ears.

Vice President Sogahara turned, his eyes meeting Higurashi’s as she plummeted.

He was getting a clear shot of her underwear, but she didn’t care.

If it helped soften him up for the “negotiation” to come, it was a cheap price to pay.

”Hey there, Sogahara-senpai,” Higurashi said, sticking the landing with a heavy thud.

”Higurashi-kun… Even for an Evold¹, a fall like that is a good way to get hurt,” Sogahara replied, a faint, amused smile playing on his lips.

”Never mind that. Are you heading out?” asked Higurashi.

”Yes. I need to get my sword repaired,” Sogahara answered.

”Can we talk? Somewhere private. Preferably where we won’t be seen,” Higurashi suggested.

Sogahara looked surprised. “Is this a date?”

Higurashi smirked. “Don’t expect any romance.”

* * *

”So, what’s on your mind?” Sogahara asked.

They had moved to the back of a narrow park that cut through the campus near the Building C dorms.

”That sword… did it take a hit in the fight yesterday?”

Higurashi asked, her eyes lingering on the silver sheath bag, which was embroidered with a pattern of dragons and cherry blossoms.

”Japanese blades are meant for cutting flesh, not monsters,” Sogahara said, pulling the bag open. “I had Kitani-san apply an enchantment on credit, but even then… it’s in bad shape.”

”Can I see it?” Higurashi asked.

 ”Sure. Help yourself,” Sogahara said.

He handed the ornate weapon over without a second thought.

(He must be in a really good mood after that panty shot,) Higurashi thought cynically.

She took the black-lacquered sheath, decorated with dragonflies, and slowly drew the blade.

It was a masterpiece—a beautiful great sword² with a deep, graceful curve and a thick spine.

But the edge was a disaster, jagged with deep nicks and chips.

”This is a Minamoto no Kiyomaro³. Incredible,” Higurashi remarked.

Sogahara’s eyes widened. “You know your blades, Higurashi-kun?”

”Not really. I just saw one online once and recognized the grain pattern,” Higurashi claimed.

”…Still, I’m impressed. This was used by Shogunate forces during the Boshin War. It’s seen a lot of blood. I don’t even know how my family ended up with it,” Sogahara mused.

”A blade like this doesn’t belong to a common foot soldier,” Higurashi noted.

She surreptitiously pressed a small sewing needle—a Sacred Artifact she’d been carrying—against the steel.

She’d tried this on countless objects before with no result.

But based on what Lugia had told her, if she could just find a way to fuse this artifact into the blade…

Suddenly, the needle vanished from her fingers.

 She didn’t drop it.

She felt it happen—the needle had literally been absorbed into the steel.

Panic flared for a second, and she slammed the sword back into its sheath with a sharp click.

 ”Something wrong?” Sogahara asked.

 He hadn’t seen a thing.

Higurashi’s hobby of debunking table magic had given her the sleight-of-hand skills of a professional grifter.

She’d kept the entire act in his blind spot.

(Wait… why did it work now?)

She cracked the blade open just an inch.

The nicks were gone. The edge was perfect.

 She snapped it shut again.

(This wasn’t the plan… but if I close the deal now, it doesn’t matter.)

Sogahara reached out to take his sword back, but Higurashi stepped away, keeping the Kiyomaro just out of his reach.

”Sogahara-senpai… do you want power?” Higurashi asked.

 ”Higurashi-kun?”

 Sogahara looked genuinely unsettled now.

Higurashi’s face had twisted into a predatory, Faustian grin.

”Yesterday’s fight with that Beast… it wasn’t the result you wanted, was it?” Higurashi probed.

”……It was pathetic,” he admitted, his voice dropping an octave. “But that’s my reality. I wasn’t strong enough. The opponent was just on another level.”

 ”That’s a lie,” Higurashi countered.

The mask of calm on Sogahara’s face finally cracked.

”The opponent was strong, sure. But you didn’t lose because of a lack of skill. You were just getting started—you were about to hit your stride when your weapon failed you. You know that as well as I do,” Higurashi asserted.

”That’s just an excuse. In a life-or-death struggle, you use what you have. The result is everything. I’m lucky to be alive,” Sogahara argued.

”But it’s a problem that’s going to haunt you. What you’re missing, Senpai, is a weapon that can actually keep up with your talent. And I can give that to you,” Higurashi offered.

 ”…What are you talking about?”

The warmth was completely gone from Sogahara’s eyes now.

”I can grant this Kiyomaro power. Power enough to clash with any weapon in this world. A power that will let you unleash your true technique against any foe, no matter how monstrous,” Higurashi promised.

 ”A power… to unleash my technique…”

Sogahara’s gaze was pinned to the sword in her hand.

Seeing him hook, line, and sinker, Higurashi slowly held the Kiyomaro out to him.

Sogahara stared at the blade, then back at her, his breath hitching in his chest.

”I might be a bit of a prick, but I’m not so arrogant that I’d demand Sogahara-senpai to bow his head to me. Here, see for yourself.”

Vice President Sogahara accepted the blade with a look of lingering doubt.

He stepped back and drew the steel from its sheath in one fluid motion.

Schwing!

The nicks and chips he had expected—the ones he feared would leave the blade thin and brittle after a professional sharpening—had vanished completely.

The steel now pulsed with a mysterious, ethereal glow.

The sheer aura of Kiyomaro felt heavier, more oppressive than ever before.

Sogahara gripped the hilt with one hand, took aim at a distant branch high above, and delivered a casual flick of his wrist.

The thick branch was severed instantly, tumbling through the air before hitting the ground with a heavy, leafy thud.

 ”This is…!”

”I can’t say for certain how much of its true potential you can tap into yet,” Higurashi said. “But that Kiyomaro has ascended. It’s what’s known as a Sacred Artifact—the pinnacle of craftsmanship.”

 ”A Sacred Artifact…”

Sogahara stared at his beloved sword, his expression vacant with awe.

Suddenly, he snapped out of his trance and fixed his gaze on Higurashi.

”Higurashi-kun… why would you do this for me? Don’t tell me… were you actually in love with me all this time?!”

”Careful. I’ll tell Kijima-senpai you’re hitting on me,” Higurashi replied. “My apologies. It was a joke.”

Sogahara’s face instantly smoothed into a mask of professional gravity.

”I simply wanted to make sure you owed me one, Sogahara-senpai,” Higurashi said.

”A debt? What exactly is it you want from me, Higurashi-kun?”

”There is only one thing. I need you to stay on our side. That’s all.”

 ”…A strange request. I’m already your ally, aren’t I?”

”For now, perhaps. But from where I’m standing, your loyalty looks incredibly fragile. Yesterday morning, you tried to kill Tsuchimiya-senpai, didn’t you? I’d like to believe you didn’t set out with murder in mind, but somewhere along the line, your heart changed. You left in such a hurry because you didn’t trust yourself to keep the monster on its leash, right?”

 ”……”

The air seemed to crack with the sudden frost of silence.

The gentle, approachable aura Sogahara usually projected evaporated in an instant.

He looked at Higurashi with the cold, calculating eyes of a predator sizing up its next meal.

 Higurashi didn’t flinch.

”You’ve spent your whole life perfecting your craft, and now you’re dying to test your techniques in a real life-or-death struggle, aren’t you? Goblins just don’t hit the spot anymore. You have a craving to cut human flesh that you just can’t shake,” Higurashi continued.

”…You really are something else, Higurashi-kun,” Sogahara muttered.

The tension in the air grew even more suffocating.

”It was mostly a lucky guess.”

”No, you hit the nail right on the head. When I heard Tsuchimiya-kun had killed a student from another school, I didn’t feel horror. I felt envy. In the world of martial arts, they say that killing a single man gives even an amateur the insight of a master. There’s an old story from the end of the Edo period—a famine drove a farmer to madness. He took a divine sword from a shrine and began slaughtering villagers to eat their flesh. When three disciples of the Hokushin Itto-ryu style went to hunt him down, that simple farmer cut them all down. They were trained, but they had never ‘crossed the line.’ I’ve been fascinated by that story since I was a boy.”

Sogahara recounted the grisly anecdote with the distant, dreamy tone of someone describing a cherished memory.

”I thought goblins would be enough. When you watch the other students, you can see their movements change after their first kill. But Tsuchimiya-kun… his aura was on a different level. I knew the moment I saw him that he had taken a life. My grandfather-in-law had that same chill about him. I thought I’d eventually earn that Haki through years of training, but I was wrong. I realize now that my grandfather had simply killed before.”

”And you admired that?” Higurashi asked.

”I did. I’ve wanted to know what it felt like for a long time. But in our old world, that was an unforgivable sin. I planned to take that urge to my grave. But here? There is no law to stop me. When the Evold impulses spike, the hunger becomes unbearable. I’ve held it back because I knew it would break Shiori’s heart… But when I stood across from the new Tsuchimiya-kun, I couldn’t resist the temptation to see if my true sword could reach him. I wanted a death match. I realized then that this darkness is my essence. But it’s not just me! Every true martial artist carries this hunger! And now, I’m in a world that lets me feed it. The real me is whispering in my ear to cut everything down. I can’t lie to myself anymore.”

 ”That’s your desire, Sogahara-senpai.”

”It is. A wish I’ve never shared with a soul. …Tell me, Higurashi-kun, if you understood me so well, did it never occur to you that I might just cut you down right here?”

His voice sounded like a final judgment.

 Sogahara’s pupils were blown wide.

He wore a faint, jagged smile that looked more like a scream for help.

He was a man standing on the very edge of the abyss.

”I wasn’t worried. Sogahara-senpai doesn’t strike defenseless women,” Higurashi replied.

 ”……!”

The sheer, breezy nonchalance of the reply shattered Sogahara’s murderous intent.

 ”That’s… I mean… but…!”

Sogahara’s face contorted in a mask of agony as cold sweat began to pour down his brow.

”It’s fine to acknowledge your impulses, but don’t let them swallow you whole. Keeping a cool head is the first rule of martial arts, isn’t it? You said it yourself—this world permits your desire. So, you don’t actually have to throw anything away,” Higurashi said.

Sogahara paused, his brow furrowed. “What do you mean by that?”

”In Japan, if you let that beast out, your life would be over. You’d be a monster until the day they hunted you down. But here? It’s allowed. Sogahara-senpai can keep being the Vice President everyone looks up to, and still use those skills to your heart’s content.”

”…I’m not following. If word gets out that I’ve cut someone from the Academy, there’s no going back to normal.”

”Then don’t cut people from the Academy!”

”Huh?! Then… then who am I supposed to cut?!”

 ”Cut our enemies,” Higurashi said.

”Enemies? You mean the hostile students from other schools? I’d be happy to fight them if the chance arises, but…”

”Once Fujisaki-senpai finishes the debriefs, we’ll have a better picture, but I’ve already gotten the gist. The situation is much worse than you realize. There are likely over a hundred schools that were summoned before us. They’ve formed massive factions that are constantly at each other’s throats. Once we hit the 10th floor, we’re going to be forced into contact with them. As it stands, we’re just a low-level, resource-rich target for them. To those schools that have already been hardened by civil war, life is cheap. A brutal future is waiting for us at the bottom of the food chain.”

”So… a true era of Warring States!”

”You’re looking way too happy about that. Amahara-senpai will try to play the diplomat, but nobody listens to ‘let’s be friends’ when it’s coming from someone with no teeth.”

”I see. You can’t negotiate as equals without a show of force. We have to take the heads of anyone who looks down on us and send them back as a message.”

”Exactly. They’ll have better gear and higher levels, but with that Kiyomaro in your hand, you’ll be a beast unleashed. You can fight the strongest monsters they have to your heart’s content. Kijima-senpai won’t hate you for protecting us—if anything, she’ll fall for you all over again,” Higurashi said.

”I like the sound of that!”

”And you’ll be the hero of every girl in school.”

”Oh! Now that is the dream!”

”Don’t be in such a rush. Give it a little time, and you’ll be fighting whether you want to or not. Until then, just keep your fangs sharp and enjoy the anticipation.”

”Yeah… you’re right. I let my impulses cloud my judgment. I was seconds away from throwing my whole life away for nothing.”

”That hunger might be your nature, Sogahara-senpai, but that doesn’t mean the ‘you’ we’ve known until now is a lie. Even if those things are contradictory. Humans are complicated creatures. We aren’t just ones and zeros.”

 ”I see… I can… just be me…”

”The hunger is yours, but it doesn’t have a personality of its own. If you let it define you, you’ll end up as nothing more than a wild animal. You’ve got a lot of darkness in you, so make sure you stay in the driver’s seat. You’re a martial artist, aren’t you? Act like one,” Higurashi said.

”Higurashi-kun, you sound just like a master. I get it. Now that I know there’s a real feast waiting for me down the road, I can keep my appetite in check.”

Sogahara gave a bright, refreshing laugh and slammed the sword back into its scabbard.

”Alright. What happened here stays between us. And don’t tell a soul that I’m the one who upgraded your blade.”

”Understood. I owe you a massive debt, Higurashi-kun. …Actually, how about it? Want to try a little illicit romance with me to even the score?” Sogahara asked.

”I am actually telling Kijima-senpai this time,” Higurashi replied.

Higurashi gave him a deadpan stare.

Sogahara immediately threw his hands up and backed away.

”Joke! It was a joke! Please, anything but that!”

”Just go already. It’ll be a headache if someone catches us out here together. I’m heading back to the dorms.”

”Got it. Thank you, Higurashi-kun. I won’t forget this,” Sogahara said.

”Yeah, yeah. Just keep being the hero everyone needs.”

Higurashi stood still, watching Sogahara’s retreating back.

Once his figure had vanished past the shrubs and appeared as a tiny speck on the far side of the schoolyard fence, Higurashi finally relaxed and let out a long, heavy sigh.

”Talk about a razor’s edge… But that’s the biggest landmine dealt with. A few hiccups, but the result is good enough. I’d love to have two or three more power units like him, but I suppose that’s asking for too much. With nearly a thousand students, someone else is bound to step up eventually. For now, I just have to focus on raising the floor for everyone.”

Higurashi crossed her arms, muttered to herself, and then let out one last sigh before heading back.”

 - Sogahara was on the verge of a mental break before Higurashi gave him a ‘legal’ outlet for his violence

 - Higurashi considers Sogahara a ‘landmine’—a character capable of destroying their community from within

 - The presence of over a hundred other summoned schools suggests a massive scale isekai scenari

 —

 Character Insight:

Higurashi demonstrates a shift from a supportive role to a predatory recruiter, using her physical assets and deceptive skills to manipulate Sogahara’s desire for strength.

Sogahara shifts from a man burdened by guilt and suppressed bloodlust to an energized warrior with a focused purpose. Higurashi reveals her underlying role as a ‘handler’ for the school’s most dangerous assets.
