Caught-Up-Crafter 40

Chapter 40 Designated Request

Edited by: Kanaa-senpai

Dozens of orcs appeared in the distance. Having spotted the party, they let out a low, guttural roar that made the ground tremble.

”Well then, I’ll start,” Olivia said, bracing her ornate bow and drawing the string taut. With a fearless smirk, she glanced at Erina. “Shall I?”

”Yes. Do give them a flashy opening desuwa.”

Olivia’s expression softened as the bow began to pulse with a faint light.

”Whoa, Olivia is actually going to do that…” Meena muttered.

”It’s terrifying if you’re too close,” Fran added, her smile turning cramped.

 Olivia loosed her arrow.

”Wait, how do you make a bow ‘flashy’?” Shuri asked, tilting his head. He got his answer a second later.

The high-velocity arrow didn’t just hit its mark-it detonated on impact¹.

 ”What…?” Shuri stared, eyes wide.

The party wondered if she had practiced this during training.

”Of course not,” Olivia said. “I couldn’t exactly go all-out like this in a dungeon without bringing the ceiling down on us.”

”But why did it explode? Did Ibuki do something to it?”

”Ufufu, you could say that. I got the idea from Ibuki.”

While the girls had been training, Ibuki had spent his time researching the properties of mana. He had concluded that non-elemental magic was possible for anyone to a certain degree. To prove it, he and Olivia had experimented with her arrows, which were already naturally imbued with magical effects.

They discovered that by intentionally flooding the arrow with mana at the moment of impact, they could cause a violent expansion. By refining this technique, Olivia had created a devastating attack from a simple arrow. As an experienced archer, she had been doing this unconsciously for years; Ibuki simply gave her the logic to do it by design. It was now her unique skill.

”Wait, does that mean I can do it too?” Shuri asked. Olivia gave him a troubled look.

”In theory, if you put in the time. But how would you use an explosion in close quarters?”

”The moment you hit something, you’d blow yourself up, Shuri!” Meena laughed.

”Enough talking! The monsters are right in front of us!” Rosanna barked, clapping her hands.

Fran was already moving. “Um, flashy… flashy… how should I do this? Should I just cut as hard as I can? Maybe if I slice the ground too, that’ll look flashy?”

She channeled mana into the mithril sword Ibuki had forged for her. She swung the blade down at an orc general, splitting the monster vertically from head to toe like a stalk of bamboo. However, the blade stopped before it could slice the earth.

”Wait! The ground didn’t cut at all!”

”Hahaha, swords are tough, aren’t they?” Shuri teased. He stepped forward, swinging his mana-coated spear. The heads of several nearby orcs burst like overripe fruit.

”Hey, that’s cheating! You didn’t even cut them!”

”Fuhaha! Since when did you think a spear was only for cutting?”

”Hey! You’re just imitating Master now!”

As the group bickered, Meena and the others joined the fray.

Further back, the orc king stood with his arms crossed, watching the carnage. Shirley narrowed her eyes in disgust. “I don’t like this. Ibuki said this one was a coward who stayed in the back, but this is pathetic.”

Leaving the generals to the others, Shirley walked toward the king.

”Wait! The Knight Order of Dole is supposed to handle the lead!” Erina called out, chasing after her.

”Right. Well then, Lady Erina, shall we try our first joint battle? Not that I actually need your help.”

”It is our first time outside of training,” Erina replied. “But we must show these people what a real threat looks like. Shall we give them a show?”

”I don’t care for showboating, but I suppose it can’t be helped.”

Erina and Shirley stood side-by-side. Erina held her dagger and greatshield; Shirley gripped her slender two-handed sword. Clad in full mithril, they looked like veteran warriors.

By then, the other girls had already finished off the generals. Erina glanced back to see a massive pillar of ice protruding from the ground. Lotte, told not to use area-of-effect spells, had apparently decided to see how large she could make a single ice shard. Erina chuckled at the girl’s satisfied expression.

 The orc king finally moved.

”Oh, did you think I was laughing at you?” Erina asked. She lunged forward as the orc king threw a massive punch. She didn’t dodge, catching the blow head-on with her shield.

BOOM!

The impact shook the ground, but Erina didn’t budge. The orc king’s fist remained pressed against the mithril shield, his face twisted in confusion.

”Are you really that surprised that someone stopped you?” Erina asked with a haughty smile desuwa.

The king roared and swung again. Erina stepped back, letting the fist crater the ground where she had stood.

”Shirley, how should I finish this show?” Erina asked.

”You have a free hand, don’t you? Why don’t you just punch him?”

It was an absurd suggestion to make against an orc king, but Shirley just smirked.

”Are you serious? I’ll take that as a joke.”

”I’m perfectly serious,” Erina said. “Show the Knight Order of Dole that the next fist coming for them is one they won’t even see.”

Shirley sheathed her sword and sprinted forward. The orc king roared and threw a haymaker.

”Naive!” Shirley spun, parrying the punch with her palm and sending the king tumbling. She didn’t let up. As the king scrambled to his feet, Shirley met him with a perfectly timed cross-counter. Her fist buried itself in his solar plexus with a sickening thud. The king staggered back, gasping for air.

”You have no technique at all, do you?” Shirley sighed.

The enraged king unleashed a flurry of blows, but Shirley parried them all with slight, graceful movements. “You call yourself a king? Show me something worthy of the title!”

With a lightning-fast strike of her palm, she severed the orc king’s arm.

”No way… you can’t do that with bare hands!” Fran cried out.

”That’s not normal, Fran. I couldn’t do that either,” Rosanna said, shaking her head.

Shirley moved to finish him, but Erina stepped in. “I told you, don’t steal the spotlight!”

”Ah, my apologies. Force of habit.”

Shirley walked back toward the lines, drenched in blood and looking bored. Erina took over, toyed with the helpless king for a few moments, and then ended it with a single, elegant stroke to the throat.

The soldiers of the Lord of Dole stood in stunned silence. Erina shot Shirley a look. The silence was entirely due to Shirley’s over-the-top display.

 ”I’m sorry,” Shirley muttered.

”Whatever,” Erina said. “I’m the one who killed it, anyway.”

She marched toward the Lord of Dole.

”I presume the request is complete desuwa?”

”A-Ah… yes. But how am I supposed to report this to the capital?”

”Report it however you like,” Erina said. “Proving our strength is easy enough. However, I would be quite displeased if the credit went to someone else.”

”I would never do that!” the Lord insisted. “I’m just worried no one will believe the truth.” He gave her a weary smile.

”Regardless, please come to the manor. We must have a victory celebration.”

”Of course. It’s important for the town to know their lord has restored peace.”

”I appreciate your understanding,” the Lord said.

Erina then walked over to the Hero. “Thank you for your help, Sir Hero.”

”No, thank you! You’re incredible!” the Hero stammered. The commander of the Knight Order of Dole stepped in to pull the excited Hero back.

(Finally realized a Hero is no match for us?) Erina thought, offering a polite, empty smile.

After a banquet at the manor and a few days of gathering information on the Hero’s plans, the girls returned to Pole.

The legend of the Knight Order known as “Ibuki’s Logic” spread across the world in an instant. Because the news of their dungeon records had arrived first, the public easily accepted their victory over the orc king. Letters of commendation from the kings of Pole and Karl soon followed, but by then, the girls had already vanished from the frontier.

No one knew they had simply returned to the side of the man who was the source of their strength.
