Sakuramachi Touko was fuming, but there was nothing she could do. Her opponent wasn’t just the Student Council Vice President; her power was on a completely different level. As a lowly Succubus, Touko had neither the courage nor the strength to pick a fight with the primary peerage member of a high-ranking devil. Her “date” with Aki-kun¹ was being postponed indefinitely.
Watching Sakuramachi Touko walk away with a lingering, reluctant look, Aki shrugged, unable to help. He was just as lost as she was. He recognized the black-haired beauty standing before him, but he didn’t know much. Shinra Tsubaki, a member of Shitori Sona’s peerage, holding the rank of Queen. That was the extent of it. There were simply too many girls in the world of High School DxD, and Shinra Tsubaki was a background character at best. He felt lucky he remembered that much.
Now that Sakuramachi Touko was gone, the two were alone. But instead of the flirtatious energy from before, the air was thick with awkwardness.
”What does the Vice President want with me?” Aki asked, flashing a polite smile. He tried to lighten the mood with a joke. “The academy doesn’t have a rule against dating, does it?”
Shinra Tsubaki glanced at him. (Is that what you call dating? ‘Messy’ doesn’t even begin to cover your relationships.) Since she was on the clock, she got straight to the point. “Nobody cares what you were planning to do with that Succubus. But before we get to that, there are a few things I need to confirm.”
”Please, go ahead,” Aki replied. “I’ll tell you everything I know.” (And if I don’t say it, it’s because I don’t know it,) he thought.
”Uesugi Aki, sixteen years old, 170cm, 55kg. Entered the Kuoh Academy high school division in April. Currently living with the Takamine family while your parents work overseas…” After rattling off a list of basic facts, Tsubaki finally hit the important part. “Three weeks ago, after getting intimate with Hamazaki Reina, Sasaki Yukina, and Kurumizaka Ruri, you awakened the Succubus bloodline² within you.”
Tsubaki set the documents down and looked him in the eye. “Is that information correct?” Aki felt a sense of relief as things started to click.
”Yeah, that’s right,” Aki said. “But I should clarify one thing. I only think I might have a Succubus bloodline. I don’t actually know for sure.” He added the disclaimer just to be safe.
Tsubaki nodded. “It doesn’t really matter. Whether it’s a Succubus bloodline or something else doesn’t change anything, as long as you actually have power that normal people don’t.”
”Do you want a demonstration?” Aki asked.
”Go ahead,” Tsubaki said.
Aki focused every bit of strength he had. He lifted his right foot and slammed it down with a heavy thump. The ground shuddered as cracks webbed out from his heel, and his foot sank deep into the dirt until only his ankle was visible. Aki winced, his teeth gritted in pain. (My foot… it’s already swelling…)
Trying to pick a fight with Mother Earth had been a massive mistake. If he hadn’t flexed his entire body to absorb the shock, he wouldn’t just be dealing with a swollen foot-it would have snapped like a twig.
”Not bad,” Tsubaki remarked. To her, Aki’s full-strength display was mediocre. She could cause more destruction with a basic spell. She held up her small, pale hand, and a magic circle instantly flickered into existence. With a flash of earthy light, the cracked ground smoothed over, leaving no trace behind. The only thing left of the encounter was Aki’s throbbing foot.
”Vice President… any chance you can heal me too?” Aki asked.
”Sorry, I don’t do healing magic,” Tsubaki replied. “I didn’t expect you to be so reckless. I was going to test your strength myself.”
Aki looked at his puffy foot, feeling like he was about to cry. If he wanted something done, he’d have to do it himself. He decided he needed a healing Talent as soon as possible. Being able to tank hits and recover was basically the same thing as being stronger, right?
”This is the method for Magic Power Extraction,” Tsubaki said, handing him a small booklet titled Basic Mana Extraction³. “If you can successfully pull mana, you can join the Hidden Academy⁴, regardless of your bloodline.”
Aki limped forward and took the book. He flipped through a few pages. The paper was nice, but the content was complete gibberish to him.
”It’s basic, but it’s hard to get the hang of it without a guide,” Tsubaki said, noticing the blank look in his eyes. “Listen closely. I’ll explain it once.”
Aki wanted to tell her that not being able to read it didn’t mean he couldn’t do it. He’d probably figured this out before he even saw the book. Tsubaki began explaining the technical terms: mana perception, mental focus, meditation times, and circulation paths. As she spoke, the difficult words started to line up with exactly what Aki had felt when he first pulled mana. He realized it was the same skill he had already experimented with.
”Vice President, I’ve got it,” Aki said as soon as she finished.
”What?” Tsubaki blinked. “You’ve got it?”
”Yeah.” Aki gave her a goofy grin. “You’re a great teacher. It made perfect sense.”
Tsubaki felt a small surge of pride. (I could get used to hearing that.) “Understanding it is one thing. Actually pulling mana is the real test.”
Aki nodded like a star pupil. “Can I try now?”
”Meditation usually requires a quiet spot with plenty of elements…” Before Tsubaki could finish, she felt the mana in the air rushing toward Aki.
(First try? While standing?) There was no rule saying you had to sit, but this was ridiculously casual. He had gone from talking to extracting mana in a split second. Unless you were born into a high-tier bloodline, Aki was the fastest learner Tsubaki had ever seen. Something felt off, but she couldn’t put her finger on it. (Maybe he’s just a natural prodigy,) she thought.
Aki wasn’t trying to show off by standing; his foot just hurt too much to sit down. He’d tried it on a whim, and it had worked instantly. Once he’d learned the skill, it was like an instinct-as natural as breathing.
His talent had completely ruined Tsubaki’s schedule. She had planned to ask him about his “special training” with women after he’d spent a few days struggling with the mana extraction.
”Cough… well, since you’ve already figured it out, report to the Student Council tomorrow,” Tsubaki said.
”Why the Student Council?” Aki asked.
”They run the Hidden Academy. You aren’t officially a member until you’re registered,” Tsubaki said.
Aki scratched his cheek. “Are there any perks to joining?”
”First of all,” Tsubaki said coldly, “whether you join or not, you’re on our list. And that means you follow the Hidden Academy’s rules.”
