The devices were practical enough, though Aki could not help comparing them to the soul-linked communication provided by the Contract. Magic and technology worked well together, but neither could match a connection that transcended distance itself.
”This battle shouldn’t pose much of a challenge,” Rias continued, her voice calm and steady. “Even so, don’t let your guard down.”
Her plan was simple. Advance, overwhelm the opposition, and end the match decisively.
Meanwhile, the atmosphere inside the principal’s office was considerably heavier.
Riser had confidence in his peerage, but confidence was not the same thing as certainty. The presence of Rias and Aki alone was enough to force caution.

At her signal, fourteen combatants surged forward.
Six against fourteen.
On paper, the advantage was obvious.
Yubelluna led the charge, while Xue Lan—the martial artist dressed in a qipao—advanced alongside several powerful front-line fighters. The remaining members quickly spread out to support them.
Had this battle taken place a month earlier, the clash might have ended almost immediately.
Now, however, the girls of the Gremory side shared a different concern.
They hoped their opponents could withstand what was coming.
Akeno raised a barrier, effortlessly dispersing one of Yubelluna’s explosive attacks.

Kalawarner and Mittelt immediately broke off, each drawing several opponents with them. The battlefield rapidly fractured into smaller engagements.
That was no accident.
As combatants grew stronger, collateral damage increased alongside them. If everyone remained in one place, the resulting shockwaves would interfere with every other fight. Splitting up benefited both sides.
Yubelluna sensed that something felt wrong.
She simply could not identify what it was.
Trying to preserve her forces for the later stages of the match, she mirrored the enemy’s movements and ordered her own side to separate accordingly.
Nearby, Koneko fixed her gaze on Xue Lan.
Under ordinary circumstances, the fight would have been difficult.

She turned and calmly walked toward the gymnasium.

Xue Lan exchanged a glance with Isabella before following her inside.
Neither intended to back down.
”Only three?” Yuuma sighed as she glanced toward the remaining opponents.
Her gaze drifted briefly to Ravel, who stood off to the side observing the battlefield.
”Ravel-san, aren’t you a Bishop too?”
”Absolutely not.”
Ravel’s answer came instantly.
”Do you have any idea how long it took to get this outfit looking right? I’m not ruining it.”
Yuuma pinched the bridge of her nose.
Somehow, she could not even argue with that.
The kimono-clad Bishop Minami and the two Knights, Siris and Colamine, did not share her amusement. The dismissive attitude only fueled their irritation as they closed in.
”Yuuma, don’t get careless.”
Akeno’s voice drifted across the battlefield as she unfurled her black wings and rose into the night sky.
Yuuma clicked her tongue.
Akeno was not wrong.
Against weaker opponents, she sometimes became careless without realizing it.
That habit had caused problems before.
She had no intention of repeating the mistake.
High above, Yubelluna raised her staff and ascended to meet Akeno.
The sky became their battlefield.
On the ground, Yuuma studied the three opponents before her.
All three were tense.
