Chapter 275 The End of the Battle

Edited by: Kanaa-senpai

Aki watched as Vali returned to his normal state, his eyes drifting toward the shattered blue orb scattered across the ground. It seemed his theory had been right.

”I imagine that troublesome ability is off the table now, isn’t it?” Aki asked casually.

 Crack!

The armor broke apart, and Vali immediately took advantage of the opening to force himself free of Aki’s suppression. Dropping to one knee, he coughed up another mouthful of blood.

Before he could answer, Albion’s voice rang through the air.

”The battle does not end until its owner is completely defeated. That is the nature of our struggle.”

A moment later, azure wings spread from Vali’s back once more. The phantom outline of the White Dragon Armor wrapped around him, mirroring the way Aki activated his own Balance Breaker. With one final cry of “Balance Breaker,” he prepared to enter the armored state again.

 ”No way…” Rias whispered.

The spectators stared in disbelief as the White Dragon Armor formed once more. None of them had expected the destruction of the Sacred Gear’s vessel to matter so little when it came to Vali’s ability to use Balance Breaker.

Unlike many users, Vali could activate Balance Breaker at will, free of emotional triggers or strict time limits. In the original timeline, Hyoudou Issei had needed the stimulation of his baser desires just to enter the state, and the length of time he could maintain it depended entirely on his ability to stay in that condition. Because he had started from such a weak foundation, he relied heavily on that method and often pushed himself beyond safe limits, requiring outside help when his life force began to run dry.

That was the origin of the “Switch Princess”1 nickname, after all.

Aki’s situation was similar, though not identical. His Balance Breaker depended on a massive supply of Mana and soul energy, which meant it had a fixed duration. Even so, he remained fully in control and never allowed the armor to consume him. The downside was simple: every activation required another infusion of power. That was the difference between wielding a tool and sharing power with a living soul.

Albion sustained Vali’s Balance Breaker with his own strength, effectively acting as a God-tier battery. The advantages were obvious, but so were the risks. No matter how highly Albion regarded Vali, he could not ignore the rules governing their connection. Repeated use could gradually erode the user’s sanity beneath the influence of dragon power, and because their souls were linked, neither side could truly separate from the other.

That was the main reason Aki refused to soul-bind with Ddraig.

Besides, Balance Breaker was only a Demon King-class state. Once he advanced another step, he would be able to use it freely. It might not produce a dramatic leap in raw power, but it would grant him full access to the Red Dragon Emperor’s abilities and allow him to summon the crimson armor whenever he wished.

Even with Balance Breaker active, Vali was still no match for him.

Albion spoke again. After such a long battle, and with both Sacred Gears so close together, he had finally pieced together the truth behind Aki’s relationship with the Red Dragon Emperor.

”Vali, stop. You are not his opponent.”

”And he is not the true Red Dragon Emperor. He is not the rival fate has chosen for you.”

 Vali froze.

Although Albion’s words reached only him, the sudden halt in his movements made it obvious that something had changed. Every eye in the arena turned toward him.

”How…” Vali finally asked, his voice strained. “How did you obtain the Boosted Gear?”

Aki blinked in surprise, but as he noticed the flickering azure orb, understanding quickly followed. The rivalry between the two Heavenly Dragons truly spanned the ages. Albion had already uncovered the answer.

”I received the Red Dragon Emperor’s recognition,” Aki replied. “I was not fortunate enough to be born with a Sacred Gear, but I suppose everyone pays for their talents somehow.”

The origin of the Boosted Gear was no secret within the Occult Research Club, yet nobody had seriously considered taking it for themselves. Killing a host was easy. Forcing the use of the Boosted Gear was not. Ddraig was not the sort of being anyone could command.

Aki and Rias had kept the details quiet, but since Vali had raised the subject, Aki saw no reason to hide it. He lacked the soul-binding, yet he had inherited the mantle. At present, he was the only person capable of wielding the Boosted Gear.

”Impossible,” Albion declared. “You do not carry Ddraig’s aura. You are merely borrowing his power.”

 Apparently, gossip was universal.

Even powerhouses on the level of the Demon Kings seemed more interested in this revelation than they had been in the clash between the White and Red Dragons.

 Aki spread his hands.

”Your Majesties, my Balance Breaker does not have much time left. Are you sure you want to keep playing this game?”

Sirzechs said nothing. In truth, Aki’s performance had exceeded even his expectations. After the defeat of Riser Phoenix, he had already held the young Devil in high regard, yet it was now obvious that his earlier assessment had been too conservative.

Satisfied that Aki was more than worthy of Rias, the crimson-haired Demon King set aside his curiosity and signaled for the battle to end.

Unfortunately, Serafall—Grayfia’s younger sister and a beautiful woman who stubbornly insisted on acting younger than her age—looked far more interested in hearing the rest.

”Fine. I will let the Red Dragon Emperor explain it himself,” Aki said lightly.

Between Aki’s energy and Albion’s presence, the sleeping Red Dragon Emperor was already close to waking. Aki was more than willing to help things along. Let Ddraig and Albion enjoy their reunion.

As for the Balance Breaker’s time limit?

With Ddraig awake, Aki was not worried about running out of power. More importantly, the mere presence of the White Dragon Emperor was enough to stir the Red Dragon Emperor’s desire for battle.

”Albion. It has been a long time.”

The emerald orb pulsed as Ddraig’s deep voice echoed across the arena.

”This is indeed one whom I have chosen to acknowledge.”

The moment Albion’s aura reached him, Ddraig had become aware of everything happening around him, sparing Aki the trouble of explaining.

”Ddraig,” Albion replied. “Is this one truly worthy of such commitment?”

”It has been less than a year since Aki and I made our agreement. At that time, he was merely an A-rank, mid-level Devil.”

Though Ddraig had spent much of that time asleep, the foundation of a God-tier soul allowed him to sense the passing months.

Aki confirmed the story and explained how the Sacred Gear had been removed from Hyoudou Issei. Most of the audience remained calm, although the looks Shemhaza and Kokabiel directed toward Amano Yuuma (Raynare) and her companions were cold enough to chill the air. In truth, much of the blame belonged to Azazel, and with him gone there was little satisfaction left to gain through revenge.

”So you intend for him to help restore you?” Albion asked. “Are you not concerned that he may betray you?”

”Even if he fails, or chooses to abandon that promise, I lose nothing,” Ddraig answered.

As the two Heavenly Dragons continued their discussion, Aki finally understood why Ddraig had set such impossible conditions. No wonder he had demanded strength beyond that of either Heavenly Dragon.

Resurrecting a God-tier existence required far more than Sub-Dragon God-level power. It demanded the reach of a Dragon God.

At his current level, Ddraig’s assistance was actually quite limited.

Aki had never promised success. He had only promised that if he ever reached those heights, he would do everything in his power to try.

The conversation between the dragons continued, eventually turning toward the evolution of Sacred Gears through the will of their users. Albion argued that Vali was the superior host. Ddraig did not deny it. In fact, that was the same reason he had once considered Hyoudou Issei an ideal partner.

A simple-minded, hot-blooded fool often possessed astonishing willpower.

As for Aki, his will alone was not enough to trigger that path of evolution without a soul-binding.

Time slipped away amid their debate, and five minutes passed in what felt like an instant.

With the last remnants of Balance Breaker still active, Aki moved again.

This time, he did not target Vali.

 He targeted Katerea.

That score had already been settled with the White Dragon Emperor. The woman who had attempted to kidnap and violate him, however, still owed a debt.

Whether because his fighting spirit had faded or because he now knew Aki was not the rival destiny had chosen for him, Vali made no attempt to interfere.

Aki drove Katerea into the ground and pinned her there, forcing the other Demon King-class combatants back into action.

”Miss Katerea,” Aki said, a faint smile touching his lips, “I must admit, your current appearance is surprisingly appealing.”

The brutal battle had stripped away much of her carefully maintained elegance. Her glasses were gone, and her hair spilled freely around her shoulders in a way Aki found far more attractive. Combined with her tall frame and the fierce look still burning in her eyes, she cut a far more striking figure now than she had at the start of the fight.

 Summary:

Aki successfully suppresses Vali and damages his Sacred Gear vessel, triggering an unexpected debate between the two Heavenly Dragons, Albion and Ddraig. As the dragons discuss their hosts and the nature of Aki’s unique, non-bound power, the surrounding Demon Kings observe with intense interest. The interaction concludes with Aki shifting his focus toward Katerea, leaving the unresolved variable of his future resurrection promise to Ddraig hanging in the air.

 —

 Trivia:

Vali’s Balance Breaker is superior to Issei’s because it lacks emotional triggers or time constraints.

Aki’s Balance Breaker relies on external energy injection rather than soul-binding.

The “Switch Princess” title originated from Issei’s dependence on sexual stimulation to activate his armor.

Ddraig is a God-tier soul, granting him awareness even while dormant.

Resurrecting a God-tier entity like Ddraig likely requires Dragon God-level power.
