Chapter 85 Club Activities (Part ①)
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
The ornate, obsidian Magic Circle¹ began to pulse, its light shifting from a faint shimmer to a violent crimson as it fed on the Mana. As the energy reached its peak, the paper catalyst disintegrated, leaving the black-and-red array suspended in mid-air, radiating a blinding glare.
Aki squinted, shielding his eyes as he watched the circle’s every vibration. The red light suddenly warped, and the intricate geometric patterns projected a shimmering gateway. From within that portal of pure Mana, a slender, shapely leg clad in a high-topped black leather boot stepped forward.
Click-clack, click-clack.
To the crisp rhythm of heels striking the floor, the master of those legs emerged gracefully. Her silky, crimson hair billowed behind her as if caught in an unseen gale. Staring at that breathtaking face, Aki’s eyes went wide. “President Rias?!”
Before his shock could settle, two more familiar figures stepped out from the light. “Akeno-senpai, and Koneko?!” As Koneko cleared the portal, the Magic Circle began to fracture and fade, the piercing red glow dimming into nothingness. Aki stood there, dazed. So, “use in case of emergency” literally just meant “call for the heavy hitters.”
”Long time no see, Aki-kun,” Rias said with a warm smile. “I heard from Akeno that you’d picked up an emergency support scroll, but I didn’t expect you to use it so soon.”
Aki had suspected Rias might be back when he saw Shitori Sona earlier, but he never imagined their reunion would look like this. “President, it really has been a while,” Aki said with a self-deprecating laugh. “I hate that I have to trouble you the moment you get back.”
”You are part of my Peerage²,” Rias said, stepping closer. “Your problems are my problems. There’s no need for formalities.” Without warning, Rias pulled Aki into a sudden, firm embrace. His face was immediately buried in the warm, soft pillows of her chest—a “face-wash” that left him momentarily breathless.
RUMBLE…
Just as Aki was about to lose himself in the sensation, the floor beneath them began to heave. A dark, oppressive tide of people was surging toward the gymnasium doors like a flood. “President, I don’t think now is the best time for a stroll down memory lane,” Himejima Akeno noted. She watched the mindless crowd—eyes vacant, sprinting with terrifying intensity—and added, “It looks like our Aki-kun really has found himself in a jam.”
”Mmph—nngh!” Aki struggled to extricate himself from Rias’s generous cleavage, finally popping his head out to catch his breath. “President, Akeno-senpai, Koneko… it’s a long story, but basically, all these people are under mass hypnosis. Our target is the guy behind the broadcast who triggered it.”
Akeno raised a hand, arcs of magical lightning dancing between her fingers as she stunned the first wave of attackers. “To brainwash this many people at once… you certainly picked a troublesome opponent, didn’t you?”
Nearby, the white-haired girl—Koneko—remained a silent wall of force. With a bored expression, she grabbed a hulking male student by the collar and hurled him like a bowling ball, scattering a dozen people behind him. “Aki… you owe me another ice cream for this.”
”Another?” Rias’s wings unfurled from her back with a snap. She scooped Aki up, soaring into the rafters and looking down at the red-eyed mob. “Koneko? When exactly did Aki-kun treat you to ice cream?”
Koneko’s stoic face twitched, her poker face cracking for a split second. (Damn it. Slipped up.) She ignored the question entirely, burying her embarrassment by diving headfirst into the crowd to continue the beatdown.
Aki wrapped his arms around Rias’s slender waist. Before he could even appreciate the sensation of flight, he let out a nervous sigh. “President, is this really the time to be worried about ice cream? Also… I’m more concerned that you’re going to flash the whole school like this.”
He knew exactly which color panties Rias and Akeno favored for every day of the week, and he knew for a fact they didn’t believe in safety shorts.
Rias let out a playful, melodic laugh. “Oh? Is my Aki-kun getting jealous?”
”A little,” Aki admitted, nodding honestly. It wasn’t just jealousy; it was a pure, unadulterated possessiveness. The admission caught Rias off guard. Her dominant composure faltered for a heartbeat, replaced by a rare, genuine flush of shyness.
”My, my~” Akeno called out from below, her voice dripping with mock envy. “President, we’re doing all the heavy lifting down here, and you’re up there flirting? How cruel.” Akeno’s pout was directed at both of them; watching them together felt like her “girlfriend” had just stolen her “boyfriend.”
Aki quickly steered the conversation back to the mission. “President, the hypnotist should still be in the broadcast room.” He gave them a rapid-fire breakdown of the situation, including his theory that the man’s glasses were actually a Sacred Gear³. He made sure to emphasize it was just a hunch so they wouldn’t go in blind.
Being carried was a sweet deal. With Akeno and Koneko handling the crowd, Aki was free to act as the navigator while holding onto Rias’s fragrant, soft body. By the time the briefing was over, everyone inside the gym had been neutralized, but more teachers and students—driven by the lingering broadcast—were converging on their position from across the campus.
The four of them slipped out of the gymnasium, weaving through the chaos toward the broadcast center. Along the way, Akeno dispatched her familiar imps to scout the perimeter.
Even Kuro was sent out; the little creature had completely ignored Aki the moment Akeno appeared. They kicked in the door to the broadcast room, but it was cold. A messy desk and a live microphone were the only signs that the creepy fat guy had ever been there.
”Akeno, seal the area,” Rias commanded.
Akeno began weaving a massive, complex barrier. A minute later, a pale yellow, translucent dome shimmered into existence, encasing the entirety of Aisu Academy like an eggshell.
From a distance, the school appeared trapped in a bubble. Several supernatural factions in the city immediately sensed the shift. But just as they moved to investigate, Rias flooded the barrier with her own signature, imprinting the Gremory Crest onto the sky.
”Tch… The Gremory family?”
”Heh, if they’re making this much noise, things must be getting messy.”
The observers reacted with a mix of disdain, disappointment, or amusement, but they all turned back. No one wanted to pick a fight with the Crimson-Haired Ruin Princess.
”There. Now we can handle this without interruptions,” Akeno said, wiping a bead of sweat from her brow. Maintaining a barrier of that scale was a heavy tax even for her. Aki moved to support her, his voice laced with concern. “I just hope that bastard hasn’t slipped through the net already.”
”Even if he’s gone, the barrier is a must,” Rias explained. “Snapping this many people out of a trance isn’t like flipping a light switch. It takes time and precision.” Aki nodded. If thousands of students went home and started blabbering about demons and magic, it would be a PR nightmare for the underworld.
Once Akeno caught her breath, she stood tall and gave Aki a small, grateful nod. “President, what’s the move? Do we hunt the target or start the de-programming?”
Rias hesitated. “Let’s find him first. I can use mental magic, but I’m no specialist. We need the source.”
”I agree,” Aki added. “If those glasses really are a Sacred Gear, breaking them or subduing the user might end the effect naturally.”
”But moving around is a pain,” Koneko grumbled, looking at a small tear in her skirt from the earlier scuffle. She was clearly not in a good mood.
Just as they were debating their next move, the familiar round shape of Kuro flew through the door. It spiraled around Akeno, chirping excitedly. Akeno’s eyes lit up. “My, my~ Looks like we don’t have to guess. The target’s been spotted.”
”Good work,” Rias praised. “Akeno, where is he?”
Akeno blinked, a mischievous glint in her eye. “The girls’ locker room.”
Aki looked at Kuro. (Of course he is.) Kuro had been monitoring the academy for ages under Aki’s orders to watch over Miyajima Sakura and the Takamine sisters. Outside of the classrooms, the places it spent the most time were the locker rooms and the restrooms. Aki had been careful to check Kuro’s “gender” before giving those orders.
Familiars were technically genderless until they reached a high enough level of power to manifest a human form. Aki had already given the little guy a very stern “warning” about which gender it should choose when that day came. If it didn’t listen… well, Aki was more than prepared to perform a little “manual surgery” himself.
