Chapter 89 Koneko’s Thoughts

Edited by: Kanaa-senpai

Himejima Akeno tapped her slender index finger against her chin thoughtfully.

”He should be out on a subjugation mission, likely continuing to cultivate that ability while he’s at it.”

”Is it still because of that matter?”

”Mm. Although Kiba-kun¹ doesn’t talk about it, that incident has remained firmly engraved in his heart,” Himejima Akeno replied.

Aki nudged the white-haired girl with his elbow.

Since they had returned to the clubroom, she had been parked on the sofa, single-mindedly munching on a piece of red bean bread.

”Koneko, what is it that President and the others are talking about?”

Koneko shot Aki a look of pure dissatisfaction.

He actually had the nerve to disturb her while she was eating? Her feline instincts to guard her food flared, and she gave him a glare that was meant to be fierce but came off as adorable.

(Fine, considering Aki treated me to ice cream before, I’ll let him slide this once.)

 ”Dunno…” the girl mumbled.

Her small mouth was stuffed so full that the words came out as a muffled, indistinct blur.

Aki recalled that Kiba Yuto did have a specific plotline in the original story, but he hadn’t paid much attention to the details back when he watched the anime.

Now that so much time had passed, the specifics had escaped him entirely. Moreover, this world wasn’t a carbon copy of the anime; he had serious doubts about what Kiba Yuto’s actual gender might be in this reality.

”Koneko, slow down. No one’s going to snatch it from you,” Aki whispered, leaning in close to her.

”I’m technically a club member now, too. Don’t you think I should try to interact with Kiba-kun more?”

 Koneko just kept chewing.

”Mph… so sweet… the red bean is the best…”

Aki’s breath hitched, a wave of exasperation washing over him.

He reigned in his emotions and adopted his most persuasive, gentle tone.

”Lady Koneko, pretty please? Just tell me~”

Koneko shivered as if struck by a bolt of electricity.

She scurried backward, staring at Aki with a look of profound suspicion, even forgetting to finish the remaining half of her bread.

 ”Aki…”

Koneko looked at him with sudden gravity.

She glanced down at her beloved bread, then back at him, as if weighing a monumental sacrifice.

”I only have half left. If you really want it that badly… I can only give you a quarter.”

(I really can’t thank you enough…) Aki thought, taking a deep breath and maintaining a deadpan expression.

 ”Wow. Yeah, thanks a lot.”

”Don’t mention it. Just remember to share with me next time you buy snacks,” Koneko replied. She pursed her lips and carefully tore off a tiny scrap of the bread, slowly extending it toward Aki’s face.

The bread wasn’t large to begin with, and since she had already finished half, the portion she offered was barely larger than a postage stamp.

Aki looked at the scrap of bread—complete with faint teeth marks and a bit of glistening saliva—then at the look of pure heartbreak in Koneko’s eyes.

With lightning speed, he snatched it and popped it into his mouth.

Gulp.

He didn’t even have to chew.

The moment it touched his tongue, it was gone.

”Ah…” Koneko let out a tiny, soft cry.

By the time she realized what had happened, her precious snack had vanished into the abyss of Aki’s stomach.

Seeing him still staring at her, she suddenly clutched the remaining crust to her chest.

 Her lip trembled.

”No! We agreed the rest was mine! You ate that way too fast…”

A vein throbbed in Aki’s temple.

Looking at the “pitiful” girl, his frustration evaporated.

(What am I doing, picking a fight with a territorial kitten?)

”It’s fine. I don’t want your leftovers,” Aki sighed.

”Eat up. If you’re still hungry, I’ll buy you more later.”

”Really?” Koneko eyed her crust, then looked up tentatively. “What if… I give you this piece now, and you buy me two later?”

”If President allows it…” Aki said, returning to his expressionless mask. He really shouldn’t have engaged a glutton in a negotiation.

Koneko turned toward Rias and Himejima Akeno, meeting their eyes immediately.

The two women had stopped talking the moment Koneko started sharing her food, watching the scene with predatory amusement.

”That’s a ‘no’ from me~” President Rias wagged a finger playfully.

”Too many sweets will give a little girl like you cavities~”

”Oh…” Koneko looked down in defeat, focusing her attention on the final bite of bread. She stared at the teeth marks where she’d bitten it, then glanced at Aki’s mouth.

Suddenly, her entire face turned a brilliant shade of crimson.

She ducked her head like a thief fleeing a crime scene, gnawing on the bread with renewed intensity.

But for some reason, the sweetness was gone.

Even though she was chewing, her mind was a looped film of Aki swallowing the piece she had just bitten.

Akeno and Rias didn’t miss a thing.

Himejima Akeno, ever the sadist, giggled behind her hand.

”Ara ara~ It seems our little kitten has finally reached that age.”

”Indeed,” Rias added. “Aside from the two of us, Aki is the first person Koneko has ever shared food with.”

She looked at them with a sense of gratification.

A harmonious Peerage² meant better synergy in the Rating Game³, after all.

Aki, oblivious to the deeper implications, found the girls’ commentary strange and leaned in to get a better look at Koneko.

The girl, feeling the heat of his gaze, felt like she might melt.

She wanted to grind the bread into dust just to avoid their eyes.

The bread was gone far too quickly. Feeling trapped and mortified, Koneko suddenly stood up. Without warning, she lowered her head and charged, ramming her forehead directly into Aki’s stomach.

 ”Oof-! Koneko… I didn’t even say anything…” Aki wheezed.

 ”Doesn’t matter. It’s your fault!”

Having landed the headbutt, Koneko bolted behind Rias, refusing to come out no matter how much Aki called her name. Aki rubbed his stomach, blinking. Despite the hit, he realized Koneko’s attitude toward him was shifting—a trade-off he was more than willing to accept.

He was actually a bit surprised. He hadn’t expected Koneko to be the first one in the Occult Research Club to show signs of falling.

But it made sense; she was the one he spent the most time with.

During their combat training, they had been in “zero-distance” contact more times than he could count.

When the sparring got heated, they often ended up tangled on the mats in various grappling holds.

Koneko was simple and honest with her feelings—unlike Rias or Akeno, who always weighed the political and social consequences.

”President, I’m going to head out for now,” Aki said.

He wanted to check on Miyajima Sakura and the Takamine sisters.

He had sent them home early to keep them out of the fallout, and he needed to make sure they were all on the same page.

”Aki, wait a moment.” President Rias sat with her long, elegant legs crossed, a knowing smile on her lips.

”Thanks to your early warning and the intel you gathered, we avoided a major catastrophe today. We could have walked away with a Sacred Gear as well. Even if you couldn’t use it, we could have traded it for resources. But… I didn’t like those glasses, so I destroyed them.”

 Aki gave a wry smile.

”It was mostly you and Akeno-senpai. If you hadn’t stepped in, many more girls would have suffered. I wouldn’t have been able to keep those glasses anyway.”

”No, a job well done deserves a reward.” Rias’s eyes twinkled with mischief.

”Is there nothing you want? A powerful skill? A new weapon? Or… maybe a first kiss from Koneko~~?”

 Aki’s heart skipped a beat.

He had been ready to turn down a weapon or skill with a righteous speech, but that last suggestion made him swallow his words instantly.

He looked at the girl peeking out from behind Rias, then at Akeno, who was watching him with narrowed, crescent-moon eyes.

Finally, Aki’s gaze locked onto Rias’s own lips—plump, moist, and the color of fresh cherries.

”President…” He steadied his breathing, trying to sound as cool as possible.

”Since it’s a reward… then I want your first kiss.”

The clubroom fell into a heavy, electric silence. Akeno gasped, her hand flying to her mouth in genuine shock. Behind Rias, the little white-haired kitten’s head drooped, a flicker of unmistakable disappointment crossing her face.
