Chapter 88 The Last Piece
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
I asked Claire to find out why Aide was so interested in the Graydale method, and we left White Lily Cafe. We said goodbye to the appraiser grandpa at the entrance to the shopping district.
”I might have more requests for you. Please take care of me.”
”No problem. For the sake of the Black Rose, I’ll also look into the Graydale method.”
’Black Rose’ is a secret code for Midnight Fangs. I nodded at his words and went back to the mansion.
When I got to the mansion, Belzeda came with a bunch of documents. He said that the investigation into Zarek’s case had made progress.
”The list of items and stores the young master gave me were spot on.”
”I see, that’s good.”
Sherry was a big help with the Moon Moss. I need to repay her somehow.
”Aside from the regular stores, there were some shady ones too. The younger guys listened pretty carefully there.”
In this case, ‘listened carefully’ means using mean looks and bribes. A combination of threats and rewards.
”If they’re selling stuff that doesn’t actually work, they probably don’t want to be investigated. So?”
He said that none of the stores had all of the items on Aide’s rare item list. Moon Moss in particular was not widely available.
Apparently, these rare items aren’t sold very often, and they don’t have many buyers. That’s why the investigation was easy.
Well, it’s already clear that they don’t actually have any medical benefits. So the only people who would buy them would be collectors or people with sentimental reasons.
”Only one store… a strange shop in a back alley, had a man who regularly bought Moon Moss. His face doesn’t match the description you gave me, though. He’s apparently a skinny, older guy.”
”Hmm…”
Even with magic to disguise themselves, it’s pretty hard to change your gender or height. That would mean there’s something else to watch out for…
And a guy who only buys Moon Moss. He’s definitely worth checking out.
”I heard him say he wants a lot of Moon Moss, the origin of the ingredients, and that’s all he keeps asking. It’s a really rare order, so I remember it well.”
I don’t understand that part. Even if he wants to buy Moon Moss, I don’t understand why he wants to buy it by origin. Is there something he cares about?
”Also, that man pays in cash and comes sometimes… I don’t know what he does or how to contact him.”
”Any other suspicious people?”
”It doesn’t seem like it.”
I checked the list of other products sold and buyers, but the only thing that caught my eye was that man who regularly buys Moon Moss.
”It doesn’t seem like we have enough evidence yet, young master.”
”Yeah, that’s right. Any new information about the rare items on that list?”
”It all seems pretty normal, like why they’re so valuable.”
Belzeda gives me a piece of paper with a summary of what he heard. It has additional information about the rare items on the list.
”Hmm.”
*Frozen Lizard’s Tail*
Shedding a lot of skin is a symbol of regeneration. It’s said to be strong enough to survive even in heavy snow.
*Flying Piranha’s Fang*
They are highly prized because of their long lifespan. Their teeth can break off and regrow quickly.
*Moon Moss*
It has a narrow habitat, but it’s very strong and can grow even in muddy water.
These rare items seem to be valued as symbols of life and regeneration, but it’s not hard to get something that’s full of life and makes you feel stronger. It’s probably an outdated idea in this world too.
Belzeda tilts his head repeatedly.
”If you want to be healthy, you should go to a doctor. I don’t really get why people rely on things like this.”
”There might be some beliefs and traditions.”
But what if the man who buys so much Moon Moss is Zarek? What’s going to happen?
Right now, we still don’t have a clear answer. I think we have plenty of puzzle pieces, but they don’t fit together.
I wonder if all these seemingly random things really come together as one.
”And, I’ve also done some research on Dupont Corporation. Well, it’s more like a summary of excerpts from their annual report and catalog. But I’ll need a little more time to gather information from my contacts.”
”Don’t worry about it. …But even just the official documents are quite extensive.”
Dupont Corporation is a pretty big company, so they have some information available to the public. It includes details about their key executives, locations, and business operations.
If you just visit the stock market, you can get your hands on some decent materials. Well, this is just in case, but it might come in handy when facing Sword.
As I flipped through the materials from Dupont Corporation, I was left speechless. While it wasn’t the core of the story, there were keys related to the series of incidents.
”Young master, is something wrong?”
”…I have something I want to ask. It’s not a big deal if you don’t know, though…”
”Oh, really?”
And so, I asked Belzeda and the people at the mansion some questions. Their answers were enough to support my predictions.
If it weren’t for me being a reincarnated individual, I probably wouldn’t have understood. But I’ve finally been able to form a hypothesis.
Of course, there’s still no evidence. I can’t provide proof that would convince the people of this world.
However, with the information I’ve obtained so far, I’m getting closer to the truth. That feeling is definitely there.
I think perceptive readers have probably figured out the truth by now. From the next installment, we’ll enter the resolution chapter.
Why did Aide’s father die?
What is the illness plaguing Lana’s territory?
How does Moon Moss play a role in all of this?
And what did Alba discover and ask Belzeda to gain confidence?
