Chapter 284-2 Towards A Future Full Of Hope
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
”Did he really get better? How did it happen…? Lewya didn’t do anything, right?” Mei tilted her head and gave Lewya a suspicious glance.
”Hey! Why am I the first one you rule out?” Lewya asked, raising her voice with a frown.
”Well… right?” Mei turned to me and Diana, looking for agreement.
Lewya followed Mei’s gaze to us. But Diana and I both looked away in silence, pretending we saw nothing.
Because… yeah, we knew. Lewya always said what was on her mind. She wasn’t the type who could carefully explain things. If she talked to Golarf with just her feelings, he’d probably hit her back with logic until she had nothing left to say.
”Tch… I can’t even argue,” Lewya muttered. “Because, well… I really didn’t do anything. That’s the worst part.”
”So then… what did happen?”
I asked. Lewya looked a little unsure.
”Hmm… it’s not something I can just talk about with everyone,” she said.
”You don’t have to say the hard parts,” I told her. “Just tell us what you can.”
Lewya looked surprised.
”That’s rare,” she said. “Usually, you’d just say, ‘It’s okay, you don’t have to say anything.’ But this time, you really want to know?”
”Ah, that’s because…”
I panicked. She caught me. I was thinking maybe she could recover the way Golarf did.
She seemed to read my thoughts perfectly.
”I see… You’re worried about me, not just Golarf.”
”Lewya…”
”I’ll say this now.” Lewya looked at me directly. “No matter what you say, I won’t leave your side.”
Her words hit me hard. I took a breath.
”But aren’t you scared? About the future?”
”Of course I am,” she said softly. “But… I can’t just ignore the past and future and focus only on now. Still, I can’t imagine leaving you behind either.”
I felt both warm and sad hearing that.
”It makes me happy,” I said, “that we’ve become important to you. But we can’t just smile and ignore everything, right? That’s why I want to know how your uncle got better.”
”Neil,” Mei said, “I get how you feel. But if Lewya says she can’t say it, maybe it’s something personal. Maybe we should ask Golarf-san instead…”
”No,” Lewya interrupted. “It’s not like that. Actually… it’s not that big of a deal.”
Mei raised her eyebrow. “Really?”
Lewya turned her face to the side. She looked… awkward.
”I knew it,” Mei said, smug.
”How?” I asked.
”Didn’t you see her face when she said she couldn’t talk about it?”
”Her face?”
I tried to remember. She had turned her head back then too. I didn’t see well, but… her cheeks were red. Just like now.
Wait.
”Lewya… why do you look so embarrassed?”
”Ugh… th-that’s…”
”The reason she doesn’t want to say it is because it’s embarrassing,” Mei said.
Lewya’s face turned red all the way up to her ears. She looked like she wanted to disappear.
”So it’s not about Golarf’s privacy?”
”Right, Neil,” Mei answered. “It’s something else.”
I sighed. I had thought something deep had happened. But maybe I took it too seriously.
”Still, what about the story is so embarrassing?” I asked.
”Well… because Uncle recovered thanks to Melgis,” Lewya said.
”Melgis-san?”
”And his kids, too. Even after losing someone important, if you have children… you can still move forward. That’s what he said. Or something like that…”
”…?”
I blinked. Her words were all over the place. It didn’t click.
Mei, though, looked like she understood. She gave a slow, knowing nod.
”Ah, so that’s it… I see, I see,” she said.
”Wait, what do you mean? What did you get from that?” I asked.
”Lewya’s saying… if you had kids, she wouldn’t feel lonely in the future.”
”…Fuh!?”
I couldn’t stop the strange sound that came out of me. From Golarf’s healing to this? What kind of leap was that!?
Lewya’s ears turned bright red, and she waved her hands in panic.
”N-No! I didn’t say I want kids with Neil! I-I didn’t mean it like that! Maybe if you and Mei had children, she wouldn’t be lonely! That kind of thing!”
”Hey, don’t put words in our mouths,” Mei said. “I only said ‘Neil’s kids,’ you’re the one who added yourself.”
”Wha—!?”
Lewya had dug her own grave. And now she was sitting in it, eyes glassy and lips trembling. I looked at her, helpless. But honestly… I couldn’t save her now.
