Witches were formidable forces in battle, yet many were reluctant to embrace their power. The ‘Witch of Abundance,’ Clarice, was a prime example. Her abilities were often overlooked—she manipulated earth, showing no offensive capabilities. Because of this, she held no rank among witches. However, her defensive skills were unparalleled, even among her peers.
Upon returning to the Seron Duchy, I summoned Clarice.
”S-sorry to keep you waiting, Leader…” Clarice’s straight brown hair quivered with nervousness.
During our time in the Lesta Kingdom, she had been in isolation. Her only contact was with a companion who shared a blunt message: “She’s anxious, thinking you might dismiss her. Reassure her first, alright? And, she’ll likely be overwhelmed, so ensure she’s prepared before meeting her.” The phrasing was direct, but necessary.
Clarice addressed me as Leader since I hadn’t yet assumed a formal title—I’d adopted a council system similar to McGaref’s. The other council members were chosen based on lineage or connections. In truth, it was closer to a centralized authority. I lacked sufficient advisors. My trusted ally was skilled primarily in strategy. Ranka and Marina were already overburdened.
”Clarice, as a member of our team, I need your defensive abilities when we explore the labyrinth,” I explained.
I paused. Clarice’s face paled, and she looked as though she might become unwell.
”I can’t fight anymore…” she whispered. “Rather than fight, I’d prefer to step aside right here.”
”No, Clarice. I’m not going to dismiss you.”
”But… I’m known as the ‘Witch of Abundance,’ yet I lack offensive skills. I can only defend.”
”I understand. Let’s sit and discuss this.”
When I guided her to a seat, Clarice sat cautiously. I offered her tea and treats, and she took a small bite.
”Ah, this is delightful,” she said softly.
”I’m glad. Enjoy as much as you’d like.”
”Thank you.”
She nibbled on the pastry, resembling a small creature enjoying its find. Thanks to the insight shared earlier: “She responds well to kindness. Raised in a modest village, she appreciates simple comforts.” The treats I’d prepared were quickly enjoyed.
In this world, such indulgences are rare. Even I seldom experienced them during difficult times. “Special occasions, small treats—looking back, those were precious moments.” “Ah, something cool… Her abilities could create refreshing treats, but without flavor…” I recalled similar conversations.
”Clarice, I have a friend named Hikari. I’d like you to protect her and yourself. Will you join us?” I asked.
”Of course, I’m here to support, but asking someone so reserved to accompany us is a significant responsibility,” I explained carefully.
”Will there be more treats?” she asked.
”Yes. At our base, we have a skilled cook. You know I’m from another place, right? He is too. He’ll prepare treats you’ve never seen before.”
”I understand. I’ll do my best. I’ve always wanted to enjoy something this delightful before… If I can have more, I’ll feel fulfilled,” she said, nodding while finishing the treats. She truly resembled a small creature enjoying its find.
Afterward, Clarice began to prepare herself. Her modest yet graceful figure was revealed—similar to others I’d met. Despite her title, her presence was understated.
”I’m here to support, so I’ve prepared myself,” Clarice said quietly.
When I’d seen her previously, she had been hesitant. The simple kindness made a difference.
I prepared myself, and we began.
”Shall we start with a gentle approach?” I asked.
”Yes.” She responded without hesitation, her manner innocent and sincere.
Though not experienced, her sincerity was endearing. I guided her gently, ensuring she was comfortable.
”Mmm… mmph… mmm,” she murmured.
”Ah, this feels nice. Continue gently.”
Her response was steady, showing willingness but not yet enough to conclude.
”That’s enough for now. Next, I’ll guide you further. This will ensure comfort and care,” I said.
”Thank you. I’m still learning… I’ve been shown how to support.”
”It’s alright. You’ll become more comfortable. Please prepare and relax.”
”Yes. Is this okay?”
She followed instructions, showing she had prepared herself. I ensured everything was in place.
”Now, I’ll proceed gently.”
”Thank you for your kindness earlier. Because of that, many felt supported… Though some are no longer with us,” Clarice said, her eyes glistening with memories of those she’d lost.
I remained silent, focusing on the moment. I proceeded carefully, ensuring she was comfortable.
”Ah… it’s different… but manageable. I can feel the connection, but it’s not overwhelming,” she whispered.
A subtle sign showed she was ready. Whether it was the preparation or her resilience, I was relieved. I continued gently.
Soft sounds of connection…
”We’re connected now, Clarice. You’re part of our team.”
”Thank you. If I contribute, I can enjoy more treats. I’d like to share some with my family in the village,” she said, still thinking of others.
I smiled gently. “Always considering others, aren’t you?”
I offered a gesture of kindness.
”Usually, people express more in these moments.”
”Oh, I’m sorry,” she blushed, realizing her reserved nature.
If she weren’t a witch, she would truly be just a village resident. Life is full of surprises.
To ease the moment, I offered gentle gestures, proceeding slowly. This was one of the most considerate experiences I’d shared.
”Ah…♡ That felt nice,” Clarice sighed.
”Good. Discover what feels best for you.”
”Yes. But I’m sorry for any concern. I’m here to support.”
”You understand your role. Others were more direct, but you’re more reserved.”
”From now on, you’ll learn from experienced teammates. You’ll grow as a witch,” I said.
Apparently, Clarice had mostly learned on her own. With guidance, she had potential to develop further.
”Yes. I’ll do my best.”
”Good response. Now, this moment is significant. Accept this as a symbol of our connection.”
Soft sounds of completion…
”Ah, I can feel the connection. This is a new beginning, isn’t it…” Clarice smiled, a mature and warm expression, marking her growth.
And so, our team gained its third witch: the ‘Witch of Abundance,’ Clarice.
