Volume 9 Chapter 30 Interlude – Portraits of the Ghost Army and Short Introductions
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
”Eternal Witch” Cartera.
Once a courtesan, she carried her tastes even onto the battlefield, serving the First Emperor with the same intimacy she once gave her clients. She indulged so often and so freely that those around her eventually grew numb to the shock.
—
Keirald.
He regarded Rakw like a younger sister, yet cherished the love she offered him in return. He remained unmarried his entire life—an unspoken vow of loyalty to answer that love.
—
”Clay Witch” Rakw.
She died as a shield in the Northern Front’s crushing defeat. Since childhood she adored her cousin Keirald, who felt like the older brother she always wanted. Over time, that affection deepened into love.
—
Raphastia.
Readers of the main story already know his carefree nature. And yet, as Emperor of the Quvar Empire, he was attentive in ways that mattered.
—
Almaria, the so-called “Witch of the Dead Arm.”
Everyone’s toy, in truth. Earnest to a fault and quick to boil over, she became the butt of jokes—but her strength was unquestionable.
—
Grano.
A confidant of the First Emperor, his teacher Takumi, and a loyal subordinate. He was one of the architects who expanded the Quvarian Empire’s dominion.
—
Berhardt.
Like Almaria, he became everyone’s toy. Simple-minded and straightforward, he was easy to get along with.
—
For-Elda.
Her appearance betrayed a slightly matronly air. Envious of the younger forms into which the others were reborn, she longed for youth herself.
—
”Adamantine Witch.”
Hopelessly devoted to Scaya, though she tried to hide it. Aristocratic pride clung to her nonetheless. In the story, she scornfully called Lesta and his people “paupers,” looking down on them with casual cruelty.
—
Flavia, First Princess of the Quvarian Empire.
In the main text she wore gowns that concealed her figure. My rendering failed in that regard, so I settled for compromise. Her reason for hiding her shape, however, was almost touching: should she ever become pregnant, she wouldn’t have to commission new dresses and burden the Kingdom of Astoria’s treasury.
Notes:
• Cartera – Eternal Witch — The First Emperor’s mistress and a resurrected sorceress of immense power. Cruel and seductive, she takes pleasure in destruction and defilement. Her loyalty to the Emperor is absolute, and she shares his desire to end the world. First appears in v9c3.
• Keirald – Once a commander in the northern wars, now a spectral soldier bound by a magic stone. Massive build, armored in living muscle. His voice thunders like iron against shield. Relationship – Loyal general to the First Emperor. Reminder: -His existence is sustained by the magic stone embedded in his armor. First appearance in v9c8.
• Raphastia – A once-renowned general who now serves the First Emperor in the underworld army. He is referred to as a ‘Holy Corpse,’ indicating his undead state. Raphastia retains his self-awareness and will, which is unusual for the undead, and his loyalty to the Emperor remains unwavering. He is described as having a raspy voice and is one of the key figures in the Emperor’s command post. First appearance in v9c8.
• Grano – The Black Flame General, a legendary figure from Quvar’s past, now resurrected as part of the First Emperor’s ghostly host. Known for his ruthless tactics and unwavering loyalty to the Emperor, Grano commands a significant portion of the undead army. He is disdainful of the living, particularly those who oppose the Emperor’s plans, and shows no mercy in battle. His presence, alongside other legendary generals like Belhart, underscores the immense threat posed by the Emperor’s forces. First mentioned in v9c7.
• Quvarian Empire – Ruling kingdom. Harsh world, restricted freedom.
• Nyx – The First Princess of Celon Dukedom, who escapes to McGaref; next in line to the throne after the Queen’s expected death.
• Scaya – The ‘Flame Witch,’ employed by the Dark Elves; captured after the battle where the Celon Dukedom army was defeated.
