Chapter 136 The Staff
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
Day 48 of the Tester Life. 11:00 AM. 11th Floor Settlement. Sanada Yakumo.
We had progressed for about two hours along the main road from the campsite, finishing off roughly eight skirmishes by the time we reached our destination. Up ahead, I spotted the narrow trail leading toward the sixth settlement.
”Orc numbers haven’t changed, I see,” I muttered. I watched the settlement from the shadows of the treeline. It was nagging at me-the number of monsters on the road was spiking, yet the Orc population in these clearings remained static.
”We should expect a Green Wolf ambush during the raid,” Sheena warned, standing close beside me. She had been observing the same lack of variance in the Orc camp.
”You’re probably right,” I replied. They had been on high alert for Green Wolves¹ during previous raids, but the beasts hadn’t made a move yet. Still, the inconsistency felt wrong. This wasn’t a closed Monster House; it was an open-field floor. Treating it like a static encounter was a death wish.
”The dungeon logic likely dictates that a party with heavy ranged capabilities can wipe these settlements too easily,” Sheena noted. “Given how they’ve been stalking the roads, a back-attack is the logical move for the system.”
”The question is the scale,” I said. “It won’t be a pack of three like on the road.”
”I’d bet on five or more,” Sheena replied.
I nodded. Getting jumped by five wolves while distracted by Orcs was exactly the kind of move this dungeon would pull. “Understood. Watch our six.”
”Leave it to me,” Sheena said. “I’ll keep Sayaka-sama and Karen, and Sanae too while I’m at it.”
”Hey! What do you mean ‘while you’re at it’!” Sanae snapped from the rear.
Sheena didn’t turn around. “An amateur who gets so lost in their bowstrings that they can’t react to a pouncing wolf deserve a painful lesson.”
”I-I’ll dodge this time! I’ve been practicing the martial arts Yakumo taught me!” Sanae stammered.
”If you have to think about the move, you haven’t learned it,” Sheena countered coolly. “A true warrior shoots while maintaining total awareness. As proof, Sayaka-sama managed to dodge and counter with her dagger, after all.”
”Ugh… Yakumo! Train me more! I want to blow away this wicked rabbit!”
”Alright, alright, during the break. More importantly, let’s go.”
Getting poked where it hurts about her slow reaction earlier, I give a light reply to Sanae, who couldn’t find a comeback, and leave the spot.
Though, no matter how much martial arts I teach her, I think it’s impossible for her to land a hit on Sheena. Even I struggle with her speed, you know?
Thinking about that, I step onto the narrow path, close the distance to the settlement, and stop at the very edge of magic range.
”Rock! Saizou! Watch the flanks and the rear!”
”Woof!”
”As you command-gyoi.”
Then, after giving instructions to the two familiars, Sayaka and I unleashed Fireball and Ice Arrow.
At the same time, I hear the sound of arrows being fired in succession along with Sanae’s voice chanting Physical Reinforcement from behind.
The fireball I released with 3x Mana Capacity² impacted a shack, engulfing the surrounding Orcs in an explosion and setting the hut ablaze.
And the ice arrows released by Sayaka pierced the chests, shoulders, and abdomens of the Orcs wandering the settlement one after another.
The arrows fired by Sanae also pierced the neck and chest of the Orc furthest away in succession.
We must have taken out five in the opening salvo.
Then the Orcs in the settlement noticed us and came charging one after another with clubs in hand. Six of them.
Once again, Sayaka and I activated magic, and Sanae readied an arrow in her bow.
But at that moment, I heard Sheena’s shouting voice from behind.
”2 from the rear! 2 from the right! 2 from the left! It’s Green Wolves!”
The moment I heard that voice, I fired a fireball at the approaching Orcs and gave instructions to Sayaka and Sanae.
”Sayaka and Sanae, keep aiming at the Orcs! I’ll protect you guys! Karen, take the Green Wolves on the left! Sheena, the right! Rock and Saizou, hold the rear!”
I said that, gripping my Machete, and kept watch on the Orcs and Green Wolves while gathering Mana Capacity in my finger to fire a Fire Bullet at any time.
”Leave it to me! Wah! It’s here! Aahn! The trees are in the way!” Karen shouted.
Karen answered vigorously, but she couldn’t get a aim on the two Green Wolves moving in zig-zags through the forest. On the town road, Green Wolves usually utilized their body color to come out of the grass. This is the first time aiming at Green Wolves moving quickly in a place with many trees.
Bashun bashun, the gunshots of the magic gun rang out repeatedly, but unfortunately, the magic bullets hit the trees instead of the wolves.
”I missed! You…! ‘Fire Wall’!”
Karen hurriedly tried to load a new Magic Stone into the cylinder, but as the distance closed and Lucy stepped forward to shield Karen with a large knife, she activated the magic.
A wall of flames 2 meters wide and 3 meters high appeared.
’Gyan!’
The two Green Wolves trying to pounce on Karen plunged into the flame wall that suddenly appeared in front of them, their faces scorched as they writhed on the ground. Lucy went around the wall of fire and finished off the wolves.
Looking to the other side, Sheena had already finished processing two of them, and Rock and Saizou had also defeated the wolves in the rear.
Turning my gaze to the narrow path leading to the settlement, four were already down, and two were heading our way through the forest.
”I’ll do it.”
Saying so, I enter the forest and head toward the Orcs. Then, firing a 2x Mana Capacity fire bullet I had been holding at point-blank range toward the head of the leading one, a hole opened in the Orc’s forehead.
Evading the Orc as it fell over, I swing my Machete at the Orc approaching from the diagonal rear.
The Orc tried to block with its club, but it was severed by my Black Iron Machete, and its shoulder was slashed just like that.
’Bugya!’
However, because the trajectory was shifted by the club, the wound was shallow. In that case, I kept the swing of the Machete going, ducked my body, and swung horizontally at the abdomen that was left wide open while it held its shoulder, slicing it deeply.
’Bugyaaaa!’
The Orc with its abdomen sliced open let its internal organs spill out, and while dripping a large amount of blood, it fell to its knees and collapsed forward.
”Are you hurt?”
After collecting the Magic Stone from the Orc I defeated, I returned to the narrow path and called out to Karen.
”Yeah! The Fire Wall protected me so I’m okay! Though I’m frustrated I couldn’t hit them with the magic gun.”
”I see. In places with many obstacles, just stay calm when you shoot. If you panic, you’ll definitely miss.”
Well, until now it was mostly Green Wolves jumping out of the grass. We should think of it as good experience.
”True. I’ve never been approached that closely before, so I might have panicked. Lucy was there too, so I should have drawn them in more before shooting.”
”That’s the best way, but you can use Fire Wall now. Next time, instead of shooting, maybe try drawing them in, blocking with Fire Wall, then circling to the side to shoot.”
Compared to Water Wall’s 1 minute, Fire Wall’s duration is short at 30 seconds, but it’s powerful. In fact, the Green Wolves that charged into the flame wall are charred black from the neck up.
It can only be deployed on one side, but Sheena is on the other side and Rock and the others are in the rear. They won’t likely get through. Even if they do, Lucy should block them as the final fortress.
”Hmm… yeah! I’ll try that next time!”
”Well, try out various things.”
Saying so, I stroked Karen’s butt and rewarded Rock and Saizou.
Then, letting Saizou go ahead, I led Sheena, Sayaka, and the others toward the settlement.
”Finally, a hit.”
Upon entering the largest shack in the settlement, a copper treasure chest caught my eye. This makes 3 chests for 6 settlements. It really seems like a 50% probability.
”Yay! This time it wasn’t working for free!”
”It was zero yesterday, so I’m relieved too.”
Karen and Sayaka, who came along, also seemed relieved. It’s good it appeared in the first settlement. If this had been another dud, morale would have dropped.
”Yakumo, can I open it this time?”
When we approached the chest, Sanae said she wanted to open it, so I let her.
Inside was a single staff and a scrap of paper for a transit pass³.
”What, just a staff… it looks like a magic user’s staff.”
Sanae looked disappointed as she picked up the staff, which was a little over a meter long. The tip of that staff was rounded like a ‘?’ mark, and just as Sanae said, it looked like a magic user’s staff.
”It certainly feels like a magic user’s staff.”
”This is a staff for magic users. I believe I’ve heard it makes magic easier to control,” Sheena added.
”Ho, then we should let Sayaka hold it.”
”That’s right, I will make use of it.”
Sayaka said that and received the staff from Sanae. Hum, now the magic user’s equipment is complete.
The Shop didn’t sell staves. Even though she’s wearing a witch hat, I felt like something was missing.
Maybe I’ll try having s*x in the open with Sayaka while she holds the staff during today’s lunch break. I’ll punish the evil magic user with my spirit sword.
I picked up the transit pass scrap with the ‘person’ radical written on it from the chest and went outside the shack with everyone.
After that, we took a short break at the settlement, returned to the town road, and had Sayaka fire magic using the magic staff. As a result, the activation speed of the magic became slightly faster, and she became able to fire 5 Ice Arrows.
An improvement in activation speed is welcome for a magic user. Sayaka was also happy that magic became easier to cast.
Two hours later, we found a narrow path again and annihilated the 7th settlement, but there was no treasure chest.
Ignoring Karen, who was disappointed it was a dud, I deployed the magic tent on the spot and decided to have lunch.
And after the meal, I took Sayaka out and indulged in s*x in the open with the evil magic user in the forest.

Summary:
Yakumo’s party raids their sixth settlement on the 11th floor, anticipating a Green Wolf ambush. During the battle, Karen struggles with the forest terrain but successfully uses Fire Wall, while Yakumo displays his lethal combat skills. They find a magic staff in a copper chest, which significantly boosts Sayaka’s casting capabilities.
—
Trivia:
- The dungeon monsters on the road are increasing, but settlement numbers are static, suggesting a tactical trap.
- Karen’s magic gun struggles with line-of-sight in forested areas compared to open roads.
- The copper chest drop rate is currently sitting at exactly 50% (3 out of 6).
- The transit pass fragment found contains the ‘person’ (行) radical.
- Sayaka can now fire 5 Ice Arrows instead of her previous limit
—
Character Insight:
Sanae is feeling insecure about her combat skills compared to Sheena and Sayaka, prompting her to ask Yakumo for more training. Yakumo shows growth in his ability to command ‘familiars’ and party members simultaneously during high-stress ambushes.
—
Behind the Scenes:
The author uses the ‘evil magic user’ roleplay as a recurring motif for Yakumo’s s*xual encounters, blending dungeon mechanics (the staff) with his personal fetishes.
