I began piecing together the ten silver fragments of the ‘Introductory Permit’¹ I had collected. The moment the letters aligned and fused into a solid silver plate, a blinding radiance erupted about a hundred meters ahead. It swallowed the highroad and the surrounding woods in a sprawling dome of light.
When the glow receded after ten seconds, a massive iron gate stood before us, flanked by an outer wall at least twenty meters high. A battalion of twenty orcs, clad in leather armor and brandishing heavy falchions, stood in formation before the gate. In the center was a blue-skinned orc-a titan over two meters tall. Two standard orcs stood at his sides, braced behind iron greatshields. On the battlements above, four orc archers had their bows drawn, aiming straight for us.
Tch. They spawned further away than I expected. At this range, Hanako’s ‘Taunt’² wouldn’t even reach them. As I clicked my tongue in annoyance, the archers on the wall loosed their first volley.
”Hanako! Rock! Leticia! Block them!”
”Oink! buhi”
”Awoooo! vonn”
”Leave it to me! ‘Light Shield’!”
Hanako and Rock planted themselves, raising their greatshields, while Leticia conjured a shimmering barrier of light to intercept the arrows. The archers loosed volley after volley, but the main force at the gate remained motionless. They were waiting for us to make the first move.
”Sanae! Provide cover fire! Hanako, push forward fifty meters and use ‘Taunt’! If they take the bait, lure them back here!”
”You got it! I won’t miss!” Sanae said.
”Oink~ buhi♪”
Hanako let out a cheerful squeal and charged forward, her short pink tail wagging vigorously. I felt a pang of unease watching her. She stopped exactly halfway to the gate and slammed her greatshields into the dirt. Then, she unlatched her chest plate, exposing herself to the entire orc front line while radiating a pulsing pink light.
”Squeeeal~ buhiin♡”
Sheena and I both grimaced at the revolting display. However, the effect was undeniable.
”Oink! Oink-oink!! buhi! buhi-buhi!!”
Except for the blue titan in the center-the Blue Orc-every single monster fell for Hanako’s provocation. Their formation shattered as they surged toward her in a mindless, vengeful tide.
”ROAAR!! buhiii!!” The Blue Orc let out a deafening war cry. The charging orcs stumbled, their eyes clearing as they regained their senses.
”Oink, oink♡ buhi, buhi♡”
Hanako didn’t let up. She used ‘Taunt’ again, and the rage returned to their eyes. The Blue Orc managed to hold back his two shield-bearers, but the rest of the infantry and the archers focused everything on Hanako.
”Good! That’s enough, Hanako! Fall back!”
”Oink♡ Oink-oink♡ buhi♡ buhi-hi♡”
But Hanako seemed to be in a trance. She wasn’t listening.
”Hey! Hanako! Get back here! Tch… that useless sow!”
”I suspected as much,” Sheena said, her voice dripping with exhaustion. “Her death wish is truly beyond my comprehension.”
The orcs were on top of her. I couldn’t risk sending Sheena out there; I wasn’t about to toss her into that meat grinder. I turned to the others.
”Sayaka! Karen! Leticia! Open fire on anything moving toward the meat shield!³“
”Roger! ‘Fire Arrow’!”
”She’s definitely pretending she can’t hear you. ‘Light Arrow’!”
”Sigh… Hanako-chan is such a handful. ‘Ice Arrow’!”
The swarm hit her. Hanako caught the impact on her shields, squealing with delight as she was hammered from all sides. Falchions gouged deep furrows into her black iron armor. Finally, a blade caught the joint of her arm, forcing her to drop one shield. A heavy blade swung down directly for her head.
”Bugya♡”
The blade bit into her helm, and blood sprayed across her face. Hanako just wore an expression of pure ecstasy. She wrenched the blade away from the orc and swung it back, splitting the monster’s head in two. She used her remaining shield like a wrecking ball, mashing orcs into the dirt while Sayaka’s magic picked them off.
Once the archers were silenced, Rock, Sheena, and I charged out to finish the job. We swept through the remaining stragglers, leaving Hanako standing in the center of the carnage. Her armor was a wreck, and she was bleeding from her chest and arms, but she just stood there, panting with that blissful look on her face.
”You. Useless. Sow! How dare you ignore Master’s orders!” Sheena’s rapier drove deep into Hanako’s backside.
”SCREEE!! pugyaaa!!”
The ecstasy vanished instantly, replaced by a high-pitched shriek as Sheena herded her back toward Leticia for a ‘Heal’ spell. The Blue Orc stood at the gate, watching us with a bitter glare.
”Let’s move.”
We advanced. Once we were within twenty meters, the Blue Orc realized we would just whittle him down with magic. He barked an order, and his two shield-bearers charged, using their greatshields as a moving wall.
”Rock! Hanako! Break them!”
Rock and Hanako collided with the orcs. The shield-bearers were sent flying like ragdolls. In that split second, the Blue Orc slipped between them, sprinting toward me. He was a speed specialist.
Too slow.
Crack-crack-crack!
Karen’s magic gun barked. The bullets peppered his armor, staggering him. Then, Sayaka’s ice arrows pierced his legs, freezing him to the spot. Finally, Leticia’s light arrow took him in the throat. He slumped over dead, coughing up a spray of gore.
”Well, that’s one way to clear a floor.”
The massive iron gate groaned open, revealing the exit portal and a silver treasure chest.
”Wow! A silver one!”
Inside were two identical Magic Tomes.
”Those are ‘Mana Signature Detection’⁴ tomes,” Sheena explained.
”Ah, the radar spells,” I muttered. These were essential for what was coming. “Sanae and I will learn these.”
”I guess that’s okay,” Leticia mumbled. “But I wanted something better. I don’t want Yakumo-san to get hurt.”
”I’ll be fine. We have a Holy Maiden to look after us, right?”
”Hehe! Leave it to me! Even if Yakumo-san’s gear gets wrecked, I’ll heal it right back!”
”Uh… let’s hope it never comes to that.”
The girls burst into laughter, though I didn’t think the prospect of my ‘gear’ being wrecked was a laughing matter.
