Chapter 233 What Was Inherited
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
Tester Life: Day 101, Morning. My Room. Sanada Yakumo.
”Ah, Darling! Sheena just bolted past me like a woman possessed. Did something happen?”
”She was like a literal blur! Zip!“
”One second she’s brewing tea, the next her ears prick up, she drops the pot, and she’s gone. Scared the life out of me, honestly.”
I left Sheena behind and headed back to the living room, where the rest of the girls were busy laying out breakfast. Everyone had a question about Sheena’s sudden disappearance. Apparently, the moment she heard Lunaria’s voice, she’d abandoned her duties and sprinted straight for the service room.
”A Resurrection Crystal came in earlier as a Wall-Butt reward,” I explained. “I manifested it, and it turned out to be the Princess of the Silver Wolf-kin. She’s the one Sheena served in her past life-the one I asked Remia to track down.”
The girls froze, their faces a mask of shock for a heartbeat before breaking into massive, radiant grins.
”Ye… YES! Score! We did it!”
”Oh, thank goodness! I’m so happy for her!”
”Ahahaha! Finally! They’re back together! That Succubus Manager Remia really knows how to get results, doesn’t she?”
”That’s wonderful. Truly wonderful.”
Karen was practically vibrating with joy, while Leticia looked like she was a second away from happy-crying. Sanae was bragging about Remia as if she’d done the work herself, and Sayaka pressed her hands to her heart, offering a silent prayer of thanks for Sheena.
”So, she’s finally reunited with that Silver Wolf Princess she told us about,” Moe noted.
”Sheena spent half her time complaining about the girl, but anyone could see it was just a cover for how much she cared,” Kyoko added. “Reunited at last. This has got to be the best day of Sheena’s life.”
Even Moe and Kyoko, who usually spent their nights listening to Sheena vent about the Princess’s various “failings” over drinks, were beaming. Sheena’s a sharp-tongued rabbit with a conveniently short memory for her own faults, but everyone here loves her anyway.
Just as we finished setting the table, Sheena entered the living room, leading Lunaria by the hand. Sheena looked uncharacteristically bashful-probably because I’d just caught her crying for the first time.
”Congratulations, Sheena! That’s way better than some random gold capsule!”
”Congrats. Silver wolf ears… so fluffy… I want to pet them…”
”Sheena… I’m glad. I’m just… so, so glad.”
The group welcomed her with open arms. Sanae looked like she was about to start bawling; she’d probably been the victim of more “Princess vs. Sanae” comparisons than anyone else.
”Thank you, everyone. Thanks to Master, I’ve reclaimed a piece of my past I thought was lost forever. Now, Princess-please, introduce yourself to the group.”
Sheena beamed, turning to Lunaria with an encouraging nudge.
”…I… am the Flash. Lunaria, the Silver Princess of the Glinting Blade.”
(God… she really can’t help herself, can she? She just HAS to use the edgy titles.)
”F-Flash?! Well, I’m Karen of the Blazing Guns!”
”Hmph. I am the Holy Maiden… Leticia, the Saint.”
Karen and Leticia took the bait immediately, firing back with their own “titles.” I had a sudden, terrifying realization: these three were going to get along way too well.
”The Glinting Blade? Is that like… a stage name? Do people actually call themselves that?” Sanae asked, tilting her head.
”Fufu, she’s certainly… unique,” Sayaka giggled.
Moe offered a polite smile, while Kyoko just gave a strained, “I’ve seen this before” look. I guess every world has its “edgelords”-even our academy had guys like Gozaru and Nezu.
I noticed Sheena was next to Lunaria, literally vibrating with second-hand embarrassment. She was dying inside watching her “Princess” act like a total chuuni.
”Lunaria, we don’t really do the ‘titles’ thing here. Just your name is fine,” I said, trying to throw Sheena a lifeline.
”…No.”
Lunaria’s rejection was flat and expressionless. For someone who technically lacked a “soul” or a full ego, that refusal was remarkably stubborn. She must have been incredibly attached to that name in her previous life.
”Princess, don’t be difficult. This isn’t the Beast Kingdom anymore, and you’re technically a commoner now,” Sheena hissed, looking desperate.
”…I am the Flash. I am the one who inherited the name… ‘The Flash-Step Decapitator’.”
”The DECAPITATOR?!” Karen yelped.
”That’s… actually kind of terrifying,” Leticia whispered.
Wait. Did she say she “inherited” it?
I looked at Sheena. She was staring at the floor, her face turning a shade of red I didn’t know was possible.
(Oh. I get it now.)
”So you took Sheena’s old title? You two must have been really close.”
It clicked. Sheena had died so the Princess could escape. In honor of her fallen servant, the Princess had taken Sheena’s mantle-the “Flash-Step Decapitator”-and fought under it ever since. It wasn’t just a cringey nickname; it was a memorial.
”Wait! Is that what that means?!” Karen shouted. “Sheena, you were the Flash-Step Decapitator?!”
”Whoa! That’s badass! ‘Head-Hunter Sheena’!” Leticia’s eyes were sparkling, her fear replaced by pure awe.
”Pffft! Ahahaha! I can’t! It’s too perfect!” Sanae roared, clutching her stomach. “The ‘Head-Hunting Rabbit’! It fits her perfectly! I can totally see it!”
”Sanae, stop it! That’s mean!” Sayaka scolded, though she was smiling. “It’s a title, Sanae. It’s not like Sheena-san¹ picked it herself. She’s the victim here!”
”I don’t know,” Moe added, trying to be helpful but failing. “Our Sheena seems so gentle… it doesn’t really match her personality.”
”Really?” Kyoko countered. “I’ve seen the dungeon recordings. Sheena is absolutely ruthless with monsters. She doesn’t just kill them; she goes for the throat every time.”
She was right. I’d seen her take down Goblins and Kobolds. She didn’t just win; heads literally rolled.
”Look… Sheena,” I said, trying to be the adult in the room. “Everyone goes through a phase. When I was a kid, I used to pretend my toy swords shot lasers.”
(Of course, a few years later I was actually shooting real guns, but that’s beside the point.)
”N-No! Master, you don’t understand!” Sheena cried out. “I’m not ‘edgy’! In my world, being given an epithet was the highest honor! We introduced ourselves that way as a matter of course!”
”Right, right. Different worlds, different customs. I get it.”
(Man, that world sounds exhausting. I’d die of shame in a week.)
But I finally understood Sheena’s trauma. She’d spent enough time on Earth to realize that her “honorable titles” were the equivalent of a middle schooler’s dark fantasy blog. This wasn’t a cultural misunderstanding; it was a “reopening the cringe-vault” moment.
”But it doesn’t change the fact that you’re a cold-blooded rabbit assassin, does it? ‘Head-Hunter Sheena’… honestly, it’s like it was made for you. Heh.“
”Sanae, knock it off! You’re being a bully!”
Sanae didn’t stop. She kept poking until Sheena snapped. In a literal blink, Sheena was in my face, her eyes burning with an intensity that made my breath hitch.
”Master. It is clear that the Princess requires… reconditioning. Or rather, she needs to be taught the common sense of this world immediately. Please, command the Princess to obey my every word.”
”U-Understood. Lunaria, this is an order. You are to follow Sheena’s instructions to the letter.”
I blurted the order out before I could even think. Did she say reconditioning? Or was it training? Either way, I felt a chill.
(Note: For Soul-less Dolls, the person who provides the Mana during manifestation becomes the Master. I could have technically given that role to someone else, but let’s be real-nobody is handing over a gorgeous otherworldly Princess.)
”…Understood…”
Lunaria nodded. She didn’t look happy about it, but the magical compulsion of the subjugation took hold. She’s a bit of a high-and-mighty Doll, but I guess that’s the royal blood talking. She probably isn’t thrilled about taking orders from her former maid.
Still, Sheena needs to handle her. If Lunaria gets her soul back, I don’t want to deal with a bratty royal talking back to me every five minutes.
”Good,” Sheena said, satisfied. She took Lunaria’s hand and pulled her toward the table. “Now, Princess. Let’s start with a meal.”
Sheena’s tail was wagging furiously. She was clearly thrilled to have her “guest” at the table.
Breakfast was a lively affair. Karen and Leticia grilled Lunaria with questions. When Sanae asked what kind of boss Sheena had been, Lunaria replied with a list that included: “Sharp-tongued,” “spinster,” “left-behind,” and “violent rabbit.”
I had to bite my lip to keep from laughing. I could perfectly picture Sheena being a nagging, overbearing nanny to this girl.
Sanae didn’t hold back, though. She burst out laughing, only to have Sheena hurl a fork that embedded itself an inch from her hand. Aside from that, it was a perfectly normal, fun meal.
Afterward, Sheena took Lunaria to the bedroom to get her changed. I headed to the service room to check the party applications. I’d forgotten to approve Yuki and Sonoda’s groups earlier. Seeing their names on the list was a relief-it meant they’d survived the 10th-floor boss. I was looking forward to the play-by-play later.
(Oh! Right.)
I pulled up the Slave Management Screen to check the specifics.
Age: 20
Race: Silver Werewolf
Mana Capacity: C+
Master: Sanada Yakumo
Status: Complete Subjugation
Equipment: None
Note: Soul-less Doll
”Huh. Twenty years old.”
She lived longer than Sheena did. I guess that’s a small comfort to Sheena and the others who died for her. And Sheena wasn’t kidding-her Mana rank is high. One step above mine. I think the Beast King was a B-rank? And he’s a Lion, which apparently makes him a god-tier combatant.
A C+ Silver Werewolf is nothing to scoff at. Sheena says she could still take her in a fight, though. Apparently, Lunaria is great at smashing dumb monsters but terrible at fighting people. She’s a total “glass cannon” muscle-head-all charge, no strategy.
I was finishing my coffee when Sheena brought Lunaria back out.
”Wow. It actually fits her perfectly.”
Seeing her swap the royal dress for a maid outfit was… well, let’s just say I’m going to enjoy having both versions around.
”She can’t join the front lines until her ego stabilizes,” Sheena explained. “For now, she’ll be working as Moe’s assistant.”
”Can she handle housework?”
”If I teach her, yes. She spent years watching me and the other girls work. Some of it must have stuck.”
”If you say so…”
Knowing what I knew now about her “Princess” personality, I had my doubts. Sheena looked a bit worried too, but she was determined. Besides, I couldn’t exactly keep her locked in her room while we were out exploring.
Sheena was right about the combat, though. Lunaria’s Mana is high, but without her soul, she’s just a wild animal. Sheena worked because her “instinct” was to protect Sayaka, but Lunaria’s instinct is to charge. I’m already busy enough keeping Hanako under control; I don’t need two loose cannons.
Sheena led Lunaria to the kitchen to start her training. A few minutes later, the My Room doors on the beach started opening. Yuki, Sonoda, and Takeda arrived, followed by their girlfriends and their own Soul-less Dolls.
The gang was all here. Time to find out how the Area Guardian fight went-and more importantly, what kind of loot they brought back.
