Chapter 121-2 Bandits

Edited by: Kanaa-senpai

After running for a while, I saw a light that was probably from a campfire. I could hear the sound of swords clashing.

 (People fighting?)

”You’re pretty tough for low-rank adventurers!”

”Don’t underestimate us! We won’t lose to you wannabe bandits in swordsmanship!”

(I see, those 3 guys are bandits.)

I thought about jumping right into the fight, but when I saw a woman being held by the men, I hid in some nearby bushes. The captured woman was being held by both arms, and her mouth was covered.

”Enough already. We caught this woman, so──hey! You! Do you not care what happens to your friend?”

Another man stood next to the one holding the magician woman, pressing a blade against her throat.

 ”How cowardly…”

”That’s how it is. We win. Just do what we say…”

The bandit man facing the female swordsman approached her with a nasty grin.

 ”Physical Boost…”

I quietly moved behind the two men. Then I jumped out of the bushes and slashed at the man holding the woman from behind. Cowardly? No mercy for scum who take hostages.

 ”Ugh!”

With the same swing, I cut the other man’s body. He didn’t even scream. After all, his upper and lower halves were no longer connected.

 ”What the──!”

The other bandit man turned around and froze when he saw the scene behind him.

 ”Looks like we win.”

The female swordsman pointed her sword at the man. Checkmate.

* * *

After a while, Liz and the others arrived and tied up the men.

”These guys… are adventurers from the town of Reedull.”

Liz found an adventurer card on the dead man and handed it to me.

”Why is a rank C adventurer doing something like banditry… so pathetic.”

I sighed as I looked at the rank written on the card.

”So, Liz. What’s this town of Reedull?”

”…It’s a big town in the northern Count’s territory. The Count lives there too.”

I felt like I was hearing about it a lot today. Is the northern Count’s land really that messed up?

”Thank you for saving me. I owe you one.”

The female swordsman came to thank me. The woman who was captured looked like a magician from her outfit.

”Don’t worry about it. More importantly──.”

I stood up and walked over to the man who was being watched by Martina, Dorothy, and Aluda. I drew ‘Yamikirimaru’ and pointed it at the top of the man’s head.

 ”Why are you doing banditry?”

 ”…”

”Looks like you want to be cut in half like your buddy──though you’ll be split at the neck and torso.”

I lowered the tip of my sword and moved the blade to the side of his neck.

 ”Yikes!”

”See? Why are you doing banditry?”

I asked in a slightly childish way, trying to sound intimidating with the contrast in my tone.

”W-We were working on a underground quest! The job was to kidnap some young women! The client is unknown!”

I moved the tip of my sword slightly. A red line appeared on the man’s neck.

”I’m not lying! There are more requests like that lately! And… we heard that rookie adventurers were coming back from the ‘Goblin Forest’… so we targeted them…”

”So, you thought ‘if they’re adventurers, no one would suspect them if they go missing,’ right?”

Dorothy glared at the man with fierce eyes.

”Underground quests… so the guild in Reedull is doing that kind of thing.”

”Seriously, everything is rotten to the core.”

Martina said, and Liz spat out her words.

 ”What’s a underground quest?”

Aluda tilted her head in confusion.

”I learned about it in training. It’s when the guild offers criminal jobs to adventurers who are short on money. There are guilds that do that kind of crime too.”

 Martina explained.

”Even if this kind of thing gets out, the guild that started it will just pretend they don’t know anything and run away. It’s a personal request from a corrupt guild master and receptionist. It’s hard to catch them.”

Liz puts her hands up in a gesture of giving up.

”From what we know about this shady request, it seems like it’s for capturing people, probably for sl*very. To catch the requester and the middleman, we’ll have to trace the crime back from where the sl*ves are being sent.”

Dorothy’s explanation made it clear how tricky this situation is.

Now, I need to hear what the female swordsman and the female magician have to say.
