Chapter 296 Kaenmaru and Kansenmaru

After that, Ms. Sasha is showing the ‘clothes’ she brought back to everyone in the dining hall.
She said she would sell them at a bargain if anyone liked them.
Thanks to that, everyone was sparkling with excitement as they rummaged through the clothes.
Kazumi, Toldo, and Rena, who seemed to be interested in a ‘sword that apparently has magical power,’ went out to the backyard, where Asuka was nodding in satisfaction, lightly sweating.
”It’s easy to handle for an odachi. More than anything, it’s light. It’s big, but not much different from my sword.”
Saying that, she handed the odachi to Aluda.
”How is it? Is the grip okay?”
”Well… it would help if you could adjust the wrapping on the handle.”
”Okay!”
The two of them walked side by side to the new workshop that had been set up in the backyard.
”How about Gieze?”
I asked Gieze, who was repeatedly drawing his sword.
”It’s amazing. The feeling of drawing a curved sword (shamshir) is quite different. I really understood that the ‘Obu Muso Style’ taught by Lord Hiroya is swordsmanship.”
He was also smiling with satisfaction.
”GieGie, could you try infusing that tachi with magical power and draw it for me?”
Meluda, who had been watching Gieze draw his sword intently, called out to him.
By the way, Toldo had mentioned that it had ‘fire magic’ attached to it.
”Got it.”
Gieze focused on a point, placed her hand on the handle… and drew her sword.
”──!”
With a sound of the sheath, a pale pink light flashed.
The drawn blade glimmered dark red.
”Hmm. Just as I thought.”
”Yeah, Meluda. It seems like the ‘fire magic’ grandpa mentioned is attached.”
Meluda and Eluda nodded in agreement.
”Oh, what a beautiful blade.”
Toldo murmured, squinting his eyes.
”…Can I borrow it for a moment?”
Rena approached Gieze, took the sword, and stared intently at the blade.
”What is it?”
”We magicians can sense what kind of magic is attached to things to some extent. Rena should be able to tell more precisely.”
Kazumi, next to her, quickly responded.
”…It’s magic of the same type as ‘Enchant: Flame.’ The effect is on a different level, though.”
Rena smiled and returned the tachi to Gieze.
”It’s frustrating, but the effect is higher than what Rena or Kazumi can enchant. This is quite a boost in combat power.”
Rena laughed and playfully slapped Gieze on the back.
”Is it really okay to have something like this?”
Gieze looked anxious, but it’s fine.
”To master my swordsmanship, the tachi is essential. Just make sure to use it carefully.”
Gieze’s eyes glistened with tears at my words.
No need to cry, though.
”Well then, shall we adjust the grip?”
Meluda and Eluda took Gieze’s hand and walked toward the workshop, so we followed them.

”There’s some writing carved here, but… I can’t read it.”
Aluda, who was adjusting the odachi in the workshop, muttered as she looked at the inscription.
”Indeed. This is writing used by eastern blacksmiths. I can’t read it either.”
Asuka, peering in from the side, also seemed unable to read it.
I quickly passed by Meluda and Eluda, who had started to take apart the tachi’s handle, and I moved deeper into the workshop to take a look at the inscription.
”──! K-Kazumi… this…!”
The characters carved there were…
”Eh!? Japanese…?”
Kazumi peered in and gasped, while Rena also leaned in from the side.
”Wow, it really is. Huh? Japanese culture has made its way into this World without Rena knowing?”
Rena murmured softly.
”It’s carved with ‘Kuniyasu’…”
”Oh, really? Hiroya… can you read it?”
Toldo also came to take a look.
”‘Kuniyasu’ is a name from a long line of swordsmiths in the East. Even from ancient times that we don’t know about, I wonder what generation it is now. Looking at this not-so-old sword… it seems to be made in the Empire.”
”This one has an inscription too.”
Eluda called out, so I went to check that one out as well.
”This one also says ‘Kuniyasu’. And──’Kaenmaru (blazing flame)’…?”
”Oh, this one even has the name of the tachi carved on it. Well, it’s a straightforward name that represents the characteristics of the tachi.”
* * *
From my memory, ‘Kuniyasu’… could it be referring to Horikawa Kuniyasu?
The master swordsmith, brother of Horikawa Kunihiro… I think I read somewhere that he was excommunicated for making a counterfeit of ‘Sagami Masamune’.
(Could it be… that he was reincarnated or teleported into this World…?)
The culture of the East is very similar to that of ‘Japan’.
This ‘sword’ is one example, and the swordsmanship used by Asuka is also Japanese.
The samurai culture… even rice is similar.
(It’s possible that some Japanese people were reincarnated or teleported from Japan in the past…)
Thinking that way feels more fitting.
I’d like to talk to Rena about this again.

”This odachi has magical power contained in it, but it seems like it hasn’t been imbued with magic.”
Rena was watching the blade of the odachi while Aluda was working nearby.
”I see… that’s a bit disappointing.”
”What do you want me to add?”
Asuka murmured with a hint of disappointment, and Rena asked in a carefree manner.
”Can… can you do it?”
”Hahaha! Since we have little lady Rena and young lady Kazumi here, you can just have one of them add it.”
Toldo sat in a chair, puffing on his pipe while watching his grandchildren work.
”If it’s magic that Rena or Kazumi has mastered, there shouldn’t be any problem, right?”
”Then…! Can Rena use the ‘Pierce’ magic?”
Asuka, unusually excited, grabbed Rena’s hand.
”U-um. Rena can use all basic-level magic…”
”I want you to add that magic to make my ‘thrust’ more effective!”
I see.
She was pretty down after being knocked back by the Minotaur.
”I’ll ask too. I think it’s the magic that matches Asuka’s swordsmanship the best.”
”Okay! Leave it to me!”
Rena nodded vigorously and stood in front of the odachi.
She held both hands over the blade and closed her eyes.
”Pierce!”
As Rena chanted, the blade of the odachi shone even darker.
”Alright. That’s it.”
”…That was really quick…”
Asuka sat down in surprise.
”Yeah. I thought there would be something more grand.”
”Originally, this odachi was prepared to allow magic to be added. So Rena just had to chant the magic and imbue it into the blade♡”
”Rena… thank you.”
Maybe relieved from the tension, Asuka sighed and bowed her head to Rena.
”Well then, should we carve the name of the sword while we’re at it?”
Aluda, who had finished working on the hilt, asked Asuka.
”Yeah… Hiroya, can you do it?”
”Huh? Me?”
”Can you read this? Give it a good name.”
Asuka smirked.
(Since it’s an ability specialized for piercing… if I call it “Tsukikimaru,” it would turn into a certain story… how about “Utsumaru”… no)
”How about ‘Kansenmaru’? It means to pierce or penetrate.”
”Yeah. That’s exactly the feature of this odachi. ──Aluda, please go with that.”
I wrote ‘Kansenmaru’ in Japanese on a piece of paper and handed it to Aluda.
”That’s a bit of a complicated character. Well, Aluda is good at this kind of thing♡”
Aluda quickly added the inscription.
Now that I think about it, Aluda was good at designs and engravings.

”By the way… AsuAsu’s chainmail got crushed by the Minotaur, right?”
After finishing the adjustments for Kaenmaru and Kansenmaru, Meluda, while sipping tea in the new workshop’s break room, suddenly remembered.
”That’s right! I made chainmail with Grandpa’s alloy to test the workshop’s usability!”
Eluda clapped her hands and ran to the back of the workshop with Meluda.
As the conversation flowed, Asuka, looking puzzled, finally spoke to Aluda.
”I’m grateful, but… is it really okay?”
”Yeah. I knew the size when I made the dress… it should fit perfectly.”
”It’s made from my special alloy. It’s light and durable.”
Toldo, puffing on his pipe, proudly puffed out his chest.
Even though he’s called a ‘master craftsman,’ it’s nice that he has this childish side.
”Toldo’s… the renowned master craftsman’s chainmail. How can I express my gratitude…”
”Well then, your body for one night──.”
…it’s already a given, right? He’s getting hit on the back of the head by Aluda.
”Grandpa! ──And Asuka, you’re not taking it off!”
”Just kidding.”
It’s a silly exchange, but Kazumi, Rena, and I all laugh together.
We spent such a laid-back morning.
