Chapter 46 Blacksmith Toldo Freeberry
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
”You could have taken a bath first, you know.”
Elberhardt smiles while drinking the tea Kazumi made.
”No… I can’t keep the Minister of War waiting.”
Liz replies with a bright red face.
”Is that so? Well then, can you show me the letter right away?”
Elberhardt takes the letter from Liz and reads it on the spot.
* * *
”Hmm. I see. Hiroya… you’re the second son, right?”
”Yes. My brother’s name is Koichi.”
”Interesting. You really look a lot like Shinji and Megumi.”
After saying that, he stares at me for a while.
”Alright! Then let me take you to the blacksmith I recommend!”
He stands up, and we follow him.
Before leaving the inn, Elberhardt puts on a thick cloak given to him by someone who looks like a coachman. He pulls the hood over his head.
Then, he walks out of the inn. A carriage is waiting on the street, and we get in.
”Well, it’s not really a distance that requires a carriage.”
Elberhardt lifts his hood a bit and laughs.
We sit down, and the carriage starts moving. As expected of the royal capital, the main street is wide enough that a single carriage doesn’t cause any trouble.
* * *
”Alright, here we are.”
”That was fast!”
”I Toldo you, it’s less than a 5-minute walk.”
When we get out of the carriage, we see a sturdy, square stone building. The door is made of steel, and the whole building feels very ‘solid.’
”Toldoo! Are you in there?”
The minister easily opens the steel door and walks inside.
”Oh! Elberhardt! What brings the Minister of War here?”
Inside the shop, various weapons and armor are scattered around, and a small but sturdy man appears from the back counter. Yep, just like I imagined a dwarf would look.
”These people want armor. Please make something wonderful for them, crafted by the best blacksmith, Toldoo Freeberry.”
”Huh? …But they’re just women and children…”
The old dwarf named Toldoo looks at us suspiciously.
”No, no, they are the next generation of heroes. A promising Archer and Thief, the only daughter of the healer known as ‘the one from Razia Village,’ Lord Rudolf, and the only daughter of the knight known as the best in the kingdom, Lord Müller──”
”──and he is Hiroya, the son of ‘Two-handed’ Shinji and ‘Greatsword’ Megumi!”
Elberhardt introduces me in a very exaggerated way.
”Oh! The child of Shinji and Megumi!”
Toldoo rushes over to me and starts patting my shoulder.
”Nice to meet you…”
I bow my head.
”I received a lot of help from Lord Müller when he was in the royal capital. And young lady Kazumi, when I knew you, you were still a baby.”
”Nice to meet you.”
Kazumi gives a proper lady’s greeting.
”So, what kind of equipment do you want?”
* * *
We sat down at the table in the shop, and Liz explained the current situation in Razia Village and our mission.
”Wow… so the ‘Goblin Forest’ has become like that…”
”If Shinji and I go, things will get done quickly, you know…”
Elberhardt replied a bit sadly.
”Well… yeah. But you, the minister, can’t move. That’s just how it is.”
”Yeah, about their equipment…”
”Hmm. Leave that to me. From what I can see, it would be better to make light leather armor. And also…”
”?
”I’ve learned to create an interesting alloy. Normally, you make it by covering thin iron plates with leather, but this is stronger than iron, has elasticity, and is very light. I can probably make the perfect leather armor for you guys!”
Toldoo grinned.
”Let’s get started on the measurements! First, how about that pretty lady over there!”
He pointed at Martina.
”…Toldoo… you don’t have to do that, do you?”
Elberhardt muttered, looking exasperated.
”…It’s an old man’s fun, you know… Hey! You 3, come here!”
After complaining a bit, Toldo called out to the back.
The 3 who appeared were…
”Aluda!”
”El-El!”
”Mel-Mel!”
Those were the dwarf sisters.
”What? You guys knew each other? Then I can skip the introductions.”
Toldo said that and gave the sisters instructions for the measurements.
”Ah… ‘see you later’…”
”Yeah. They said it was thanks to the Sir Minister of War, so it must definitely be my grandpa.”
Aluda winked and smiled at me.
”Alright, let’s take measurements one by one!”
Saying that, the 3 sisters took the women into the back room.
* * *
”By the way… Hiroya, can you show me that sword at your waist?”
Toldo pointed at my Ōwakizashi.
”Sure, here you go.”
I drew it from the sheath and handed it to Toldo.
”…Is there something special about that sword?”
Elberhardt asked, but Toldo drew my Ōwakizashi without answering.
”…I knew it…”
Toldo examined the blade from various angles.
”You take good care of it. There’s no warp in the blade.”
Saying that, he sheathed the sword.
”Elberhardt, this is the ‘Yamikirimaru (Evil-Slayer)’.”
”Oh…”
”?”
”Of course, the kid wouldn’t know. This is made by an old blacksmith from Himuka… they called him a ‘master swordsmith’… well, this sword was forged by him. It was made in Himuka along with its partner, the tachi ‘Kamikirimaru (God-Slayer)’.”
”Yamikirimaru… Kamikirimaru…”
Hearing the name of the sword sent a chill down my spine.
”When you meet a god, you cut the god, and when you meet a demon, you cut the demon… that’s the meaning behind the name.”
I felt like I had heard those words in my previous life… was it from ‘Makai Tensho (Demon Realm Reincarnation)’?
Not in a movie, but holding a sword with such a meaning in reality… I felt chills again.
”Originally, it was made to cut evil gods and youma (demons), but given the times…”
I see. The feeling I had when I first drew it was indeed that it had absorbed many ‘lives’… just like the military sword from my previous life.
”I heard that after the fall of Himuka, it returned to the swordsmith along with Kamikirimaru…”
”Have you cut any youma (demons) with it?”
Toldo was still mumbling something, but Elberhardt, who received the Ōwakizashi from him, glared at the blade as he asked me a question.
”Three high-ranking demons…”
”Wow, I’m surprised! You really are those 2’s son!”
Toldo looked at me in shock. Now that I think about it, when I cut that youma (demon)… it felt light.
”It cut well.”
”Of course. It has a special effect against youma (demons).”
While we were talking about that, it seemed the women had finished their measurements, and next, it was my turn.
* * *
”Here it is.”
After the measurements were done, Toldo showed me a metal sample plate that would be fitted into the leather armor.
I picked it up, and… it was light. It also had some elasticity.
”It originally comes from this kind of stone. It’s light and easy to work with, but unfortunately, it’s weak in strength and especially vulnerable to fire.”
He showed me a piece of the stone.
”Oh… Flame Stone.”
”Oh? You know about it?”
Toldo reacted to Kazumi’s mumble.
”I saw it from Ms. Aluda.”
”I see. Well, anyway, by mixing this with zinc and Flame Stone, it becomes a metal that’s light, elastic, and strong like that plate.”
”Kazumi… this is like ‘magnesium alloy’.”
I whispered to Kazumi.
”Magnesium alloy?”
”Yeah. It’s an alloy used in aircraft bodies. It’s probably the same as that.”
”Wow… it’s kind of strange that even in another world, they reach the same technology as modern times.”
We whispered together.
I didn’t notice Elberhardt laughing at us at that moment.
* * *
”Now, I want to go to the guild, is that okay?”
”The guild…?”
Elberhardt, once again wearing his cloak up to his head, stepped out of the shop. Well, it’s just right since Liz needs to go exchange the youma (demon) stones.
”Yeah. I want you to see the guild reforms in the royal capital with your own eyes and tell your father and the guild master of Razia Village about it. Also…”
”?”
”I want to get your adventurer registration done. Of course, it’s fine to be registered under Razia Village. But I want to do it as your guardian… okay?”
According to Elberhardt’s explanation, even if you can register as an adventurer under the lord’s special case in Razia Village, it might not be accepted at the guild headquarters. The rule is that you have to be over 12 years old. In that case, it would only be a temporary registration. So, it seems safer to register under my (Jibun no) recommendation as the Minister of War and the hero who defeated the Demon King.
”That was also written in the letter from Shinji.”
If my dad said so, then there’s no problem.
”Thank you.”
When I said that, Elberhardt smiled brightly and got into the carriage.

Sounds like he’s getting a brigadine, aka a coat of plates, although I’d recommend something other than leather, which isn’t breathable, adds more weight, and doesn’t provide enough more defense to justify it.
Also, a proper cuirass and its harness is a pain to put on and off even with help. An adventurer would be better off with something that can be thrown on quickly. Mail isn’t much better. Look up a video of people wriggling into or out of properly fitted mail shirts. Kinda goofy.
