Chapter 204 Momo

On the way home from the Canarias Convent¹, I was walking through the backstreet town or street with Tania, the Elf adventurer, and Laika, the Dog-beastman adventurer. Suddenly, we met a neighbor who lived across from us. She looked very worried.
She told me that something was happening to my dear experimental slave, Lily. Normally, that would mean a baby was coming, but… I tried to calm my fast heartbeat as I asked her to be sure.
”…Is she about to give birth?” I asked.
”Yes! Miranda-sama is looking after her now! Hurry and go to her!” the neighbor replied.
When I heard that, I ran as fast as I could. I only said a quick “Thank you!” to the woman who came to find me, and then I was gone.
I felt Tania and Laika running right behind me. To strong adventurers like them, I must have looked very slow, but they stayed with me the whole time.
In my old days as an adventurer, even when I was running away from a Giant Bear² that I found by accident, I don’t think I felt this scared or desperate.
”Huff… huff… huff…! Lily…!!!”
My chest felt tight. My heart was hitting my ribs. My neck felt hot, and it was hard to see clearly. My legs felt like they would trip over themselves. The short walk to my house felt very, very long.
At last, I saw the back door of my house. I was too impatient to wait for the door to open slowly. I pushed it open with a lot of force and ran inside. I kicked off my shoes and made a lot of noise on the floor.
”Lily!!!” I shouted.
”You silly student! Don’t bring all that dust into this room!!!”
When I yelled her name, I heard a loud shout from Miranda-sama. She is my teacher in magic medicine and she was acting as the midwife.
”Oh… I-I’m sorry…” I replied.
”Really! You being here won’t help at all! Go outside, clean the dust off your clothes, and wash your hands!”
I looked into the room and saw Lily. She was sitting in the birthing chair, holding back the pain. Many women from the neighborhood were there, helping Miranda-sama.
It was clear that everyone was ready and I would only be in the way. I felt a bit embarrassed for making such a big scene, so I went back outside quietly.
Yeah… I was acting just like the ‘useless man’ in stories who gets in the way during important moments. Running into a birth room while screaming was not very smart of me.
”Kento… I didn’t think you would run inside before we could even stop you…” Tania said, looking tired.
”Well, at least he got home and took his shoes off, right? The door isn’t broken, either. A man in my pack once got so worried he fell and broke his leg,” Laika added with a shrug.
Tania and Laika helped me clean the dust off my clothes. Tania even used magic to make water so I could wash my face and hands. Yeah… I’m very sorry for the trouble…
The two of them were already ready to go inside. Once I was clean, we went to Lily together. She was still in the birthing chair, suffering through the pain of labor.
”I’m sorry, Lily… I’m late…”
”Heehee… That was such a ‘Master’ way to arrive… it was funny… It hurts, so please don’t make me laugh… Ah, g-urgh…!”
I moved closer and talked to her. She gave me a brave smile even though she was in pain. But the pain came back quickly, and a lot of sweat covered her face.
”Come on, Hubby, wipe her sweat!”
”Hold her hand! Don’t let go even if she breaks your bones!”
The local women were very busy. I took a towel and wiped her sweat. I tried to hold her hand, which was gripping the chair very hard. But…
”P-Please don’t. Master’s weak hands… I might really break them… I can’t focus if I’m worried about you…” Lily gasped.
”Oh, yes, I’m sorry…” I replied.
So Lily really did think I was weak… Well, compared to her, I guess I am, so I can’t say much. I was just very worried because she looked like she could barely breathe.
”Miranda-sama, how is she doing?”
”There isn’t much to say. Her water broke when the sun started to go down, and we were ready just before you ran in. This might take until morning. Be ready for that.”
”I understand. Thank you. Please take care of her.”
”Heh, don’t think being nice will make the price cheaper!”
”I will pay any price you want, as long as the baby is safe.”
”Good. Don’t forget those words.”
I nodded at the old woman. I couldn’t do much, so I wiped Lily’s sweat again and stayed near her. Since she said I shouldn’t hold her hand, I held her shoulders and tried to give her strength with my words.
”Lily, you can do it! Stay strong…!”
”Master…! Ngh, aah…!?”
”Wait! She’s coming! The baby is being born now!!!” Miranda-sama shouted.
”What!?” I replied in shock.
Miranda-sama had just said it would take until morning, but now she was shouting. Born… already!? What should I do!? How do I—!?
”Huff… huff…!!!”
”I see the head! Push! Oh!? The shoulders are already out…! Ohhh!?”
Lily was breathing hard and Miranda-sama was shouting in surprise. I didn’t look at Lily’s lower half because I wanted to be respectful, but it was a very busy moment. Then, it happened.
”Waaaa! Waaaa!”
The loud cry of a baby filled the room. Me, Miranda-sama, Lily, the women, and even Laika and Tania—everyone stopped for a second when we heard that voice.
”…The baby is born.”
”Is she really here!?” I asked.
”Wait, already!?” the neighbor said.
”The first bath! Get the water!”
”Towels! We need towels!”
Everyone started moving again. It was a big rush because it happened so fast. Finally, Miranda-sama slowly lifted the child she had just delivered and showed her to Lily and me.
”Waaaa, waaaa!”
”A healthy baby girl. You… really worked hard, didn’t you?”
”Lily, thank you! You did so well! This is our child!”
”Huff, huff… Yes. Thank you…?”
Everything happened so fast that I was still a bit confused, but I was very happy. I thanked Lily many times and kissed her cheek. She still looked a bit tired and surprised…
While the room was busy, Miranda-sama put our daughter in her first bath. The local women helped with everything. Soon, our child was wrapped in clothes and placed in Lily’s arms.
”She was very slow while she was inside me, but she came out very fast…”
Lily spoke quietly and touched the baby’s head. The baby had a wrinkled face and was crying, “Waaaa, waaaa.” She had a very tiny nose and mouth. And then…
”She is so cute! She looks just like Lily-sama!” Laika said happily.
”Yes, her hair is a very beautiful pink…” Tania said.
Laika and Tania looked at the baby. It was true—our daughter had pink hair just like Lily.
That meant the blood of the Pink Clan³ was very strong. Because she was a girl with that blood, I had many worries about her future. But for now, I just wanted to be happy that she was born. I thanked everyone who helped us.
”Thank you, everyone. Miranda-sama, thank you for your help.”
”She came out before I could do much… I think it is because her birth canal was already very soft and ready…”
”Oh… Yes… I see…”
Yeah… I knew exactly why that was… I felt my face get red as the women and the old lady looked at me. I could only look at Lily awkwardly.
No! She was born very easily and safely! There is no reason to be shy! I calmed down and looked at my daughter again.
”She is so beautiful… If she looks like Lily, she will be very pretty!”

I had promised Lily that I would choose the name. I had been thinking about it for a long time.
If it were a boy, I liked Alexander or Marcus. Those were easy choices.
But for a girl… I thought about names like Hannah, but they didn’t feel right. I wondered if a Japanese name would be better…
”Hmm…” I thought while I touched her soft cheeks. Her cheeks were very round and plump. She looked as sweet as a peach. As she kept crying “Waaaa, waaaa,” a name came to me.
”How about the name ‘Momo’…?”
”‘Momo’…?”
Lily said the name and looked at the ceiling to think. She closed her eyes for a few seconds, then looked at me and the baby. She said the name softly.
”Momo-chan…?”
”Waaaa, waaaa!”
She didn’t stop crying right away, but after Lily said “Momo-chan” a few more times, she nodded.
”Yes, I think that is a very good name.”
”I’m glad… Then her name is Momo. Momo Harvest⁴. I’m happy to meet you, little one.”
I whispered to her as I touched Momo’s head and her soft, pink hair.

He’s a former overworked, ordinary salaryman from modern Japan who was suddenly transported (isekai’d) to this fantasy world. He has dark hair and an unremarkable appearance, typically wearing a plain, slightly suspicious-looking shop owner’s clothes looks like Kazuma Satou from certain series. He has a minimal amount of magic power, enough to craft his specialty items.
• Momo – The newborn daughter of Kento and Lily. She has pink hair and her father’s ear and eyebrow shapes.
