Chapter 433 The Qualities of a Saint
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
”Wh-why are you here…?” I asked.
”Mmm-, I asked Ce-chan and she gave me the green light!” Loire-Rose replied.
Loire-Rose, the Saint¹ herself, poked her head up from the basement. I was still reeling from the fact that she was here at all, let alone using the secret passage so casually, but she just tossed the explanation out there like it was nothing.
Hey, hey, hey… I know the people here are practically family, but we’ve got people from the Coalmine Kingdom here, not to mention Laika’s parents! Is it really okay to be this public about a secret tunnel…?
”Lord Harvest, I apologize for the intrusion while you were resting,” Muse said.
While my heart was doing somersaults, Muse-Queen Canaria’s personal maid-emerged from behind Loire-Rose. If she was here, they really must have gotten official permission. I felt a momentary surge of relief and was about to ask what this was all about, when…
”Kento-kins, let’s go on a date! A date!” Loire-Rose chirped.
”Wait, what…?” I stammered.
Without even waiting for an answer, she grabbed my arm and started hauling me away.

”Seriously, I’m totes sorry!” Loire-Rose said.
”If you actually felt bad, you’d give me a break…” I muttered.
In the end, I was dragged outside without a say in the matter. She’d donned a hat to hide her distinctive white hair, and her outfit was that of a typical town girl rather than a member of the clergy.
Plenty of people had seen the Saint during the recent ceremony; if she went strolling through the streets as herself, it would be a total riot. Also, Muse was-as usual-lurking in the shadows. Apparently, she was pulling duty as the Saint’s bodyguard today.
”I do feel bad, okay? But I’ve got, like, a ton of stuff going on. I really need Kento-kins’ help here, or I’m gonna be in a major spot!” Loire-Rose explained.
To give her credit, she seemed to genuinely feel bad; she’d even bowed her head to everyone back at the house. Though, that made me worry about her Saintly reputation. I wondered if that old geezer, Cardinal Mork-her “overseer” or whatever-would give her hell for it later.
What really bothered me, though, was that I seemed to be the only one losing my mind over her arrival. Laika had just said, “Oh, is the harem growing again?” while her parents were whispering things like, “Our son-in-law is a bold one, bringing the Saint herself into the bedroom…”
From the Coalmine crew, Martin told me, “Don’t worry about Lady Momo, brother-in-law, I’ve got her.” Both Kushe and Flearis just shouted, “Make sure you’re back by dinner!” Honestly, Flearis aside, Kushe was definitely just worried about missing out on my cooking.
Much to my chagrin, it seems I’ve been labeled as “that guy.” To everyone else, I’m apparently some kind of s*xual deviant who pounces on every woman in sight. The saddest part is that I can’t exactly provide a rock-solid rebuttal.
”What were you talking to Tania about?” I asked.
”Hmm? Just thanking her for the other day. I told her I appreciated the help, though she just hit me with a ‘I didn’t do it for your sake’-typical, right?” Loire-Rose laughed.
”The other day” referred to the triumphal ceremony, where we’d captured the assassin with the help of the Elven reinforcements. It seems she at least has enough manners for a thank-you.
”She also said, ‘The Saint of this generation is actually halfway decent,’ which I’m taking as a huge win. Is she always like that? Is that just the Tania-sama default?”
”Ah, well… it’s her default for most people,” I replied. “But honestly, Tania doesn’t have the highest opinion of the Church of Demon-Subjugation² to begin with, so…”
”Ooh, so does that mean she actually likes me?”
”Probably… She’s an Elf of deep convictions, even if she doesn’t show it. She doesn’t treat people cruelly if they’ve shown her proper respect.”
”Heh, glad to hear it!”
”Just don’t go dragging her into your schemes, okay?” I warned.
Despite calling it a “date,” we spent our walk through the city engaged in this decidedly unromantic chatter. Our destination was the Canaria Convent-the production factory for my shop, and where Sister Amelia is stationed.
In short: it was a work trip. Apparently, after Amelia’s “Please allow me to love…” bombshell and the subsequent chaos, the Church has been in a state of absolute uproar.
The news is still trickling out, but “letters of concern” have already started flooding in from the Holy City and various convents across the land.
There are people for it and people against it, obviously, but the pushback from the conservative factions back in the Holy City is expected to be brutal. As a result, Loire-Rose decided she’s going to hunker down in this town for a while… or rather, in the Canaria Royal Palace.
”At the end of the day, we still don’t know what the Wielope Empire is gonna do. Oh, and Kento-kins, thanks for pulling all those strings behind the scenes!”
”…Well, half of that was for my own sake. The other half was for my girls,” I said.
”Wait, am I not even in your top two?” she teased.
She’s surprisingly good at playing the “straight man” in a comedy routine; she laughed as she fired back a witty retort. Truth be told, I owe her a lot. You could even say I’m deeply in her debt-specifically for how she handled that heresy trial³.
”I’ve been meaning to ask seriously… why did you recognize our ‘Tremble-D**do-Buddy’⁴ back then?”
”Mmm, because everyone looked like they were having such a good time?” she replied.
I almost tripped over my own feet at that ridiculous answer. Loire-Rose just giggled at my reaction. I felt like she was playing me like a fiddle, but the fact that I didn’t mind it made her even more dangerous.
”I was being serious… That decision saved our necks. Because of that, we were able to start selling to convents everywhere, and those profits funded all our new products.”
”Nn-, then my gut was right! Which means the Great Dragon subjugation and the successful ceremony all trace back to my brilliant call that day. Man, I’m good!”
She said it so casually, but she was right. The Church had cooperated to help end the war with Coalmine. Without them, we never could have moved the “Hot-Shot-kun”⁵ heating circuits.
Without that, I never would have met Lady Ierse of Coalmine, so the “D**do-Buddy Trade Zone” wouldn’t exist. I wouldn’t have met Kushe, the head mage, so the “D**do-Buddy Cannon” wouldn’t have been finished.
Everything was connected. We only made it this far because we survived that heresy trial.
”Honestly, I wasn’t overthinking it,” Loire-Rose said softly. “Ce-chan wanted to protect you, and I knew it would fix the Church’s messy history with the beastmen. Besides, I’ve got plenty of enemies-might as well make as many ‘besties’ as I can, right?”
She kept her tone light, but I knew it wasn’t a “light” decision. Ever since she became Saint, she’s been fighting a shadow war against the Wielope Empire and their puppets inside the Church.
Maybe that’s why she talks like this-wrapping her true intentions in layers of sugar-coated slang. And maybe that’s why she’s so desperate for “besties.”
Navigating those treacherous waters, building an inner circle to survive… that’s her way of life. It’s her political tightrope walk. She’s really carrying a lot on those shoulders.
”…Yeah. Thank you, Lady Saint.”
”Hey! What did I say? That title is banned in the city! Actually, it’s banned period! I told you, I want you to call me something cuter, like Ro-wa-wa or Rozu-chi!”
When she puts it like that, I can’t exactly say no. On the way to the Canaria Convent, I spent the rest of the walk brainstorming nicknames, only for her to shoot every single one of them down with a “Nope!” or “Try harder!”

She wears practical but light armor over a simple cloth tunic and short pants, highlighting her grace and agility. Her primary relationship is one of friendly senior-junior with Raika.
