”In the end, Light Moss¹ really was the right answer!”
We were in the middle of product development for the Wielope Empire. After running a series of experiments, we finally got the Light Moss to recreate the glow we needed. I don’t think the Light Moss back on Earth actually emitted its own light, but in this world, it put on a hell of a show. The thing was glowing like a neon sign.
”Well, the ‘light pouch’ of a Light Bat² is just an organ for storing the moss they eat,” I explained. “I figured it would turn out this way.”
”If you knew that, then why did you make me do all that butchering!?” Nina grumbled. “It was totally revolting, it took forever, and I ended up covered in slime!”
”It was about building character,” I countered. “I might have known the answer, but you didn’t. You had to learn. If you’re going to be my apprentice, you need to be able to gut a hundred monsters without blinking.”
”Grrr… I get what you’re saying, Boss. I get it, but still! Did we really have to butcher every single other monster too!?”
”Of course. Mark my words: in this business, you test every possible option. You don’t always stumble onto the right answer on your first try.”
”Fine, fine… I get it…” Nina muttered gununu.
She definitely didn’t get it. My apprentice, Nina-Mailse, was salty as hell about being forced to take the long way around. I’m not the type to say ‘the youth need to suffer,’ but she needs to face these kinds of hardships while I’m still around to supervise. If she tried to do this on her own, she wouldn’t even know how to struggle; she’d just waste her effort. I didn’t feel like explaining all that – it’s pointless without the hands-on experience anyway – but she’ll figure it out eventually.
”Alright,” I said. “Now that we’ve nailed the glow, how are we going to make the Dildo-Buddy light up?”
”Huh? Why don’t we just build a fake ‘light pouch’ inside the casing?” Nina asked.
”Fair point. If you think it’ll work, give it a shot.”
Nina looked a bit doubtful, but she got to work on the lighting mechanism. So far, we had only managed to make the moss glow; now we had to manufacture a ‘Luminescent Buddy’ that would activate with the flick of a switch. However, when it came to the actual craft, she was as sharp as ever.
The original Luminescent Buddy used Holy Arts³, a completely different system, yet she breezed through the prototype. It was a real moment of glory for a Sacred Artificer⁴. It was a treat for me to watch a ‘competitor’ work from such a close vantage point. It seemed that even with Holy Relics and magic circuits⁵, the basic rules of physics still applied, which made it easy for me to follow her lead.
”By the way,” I asked, “how does the original Luminescent Buddy actually work?”
”Oh, that? It just has ‘Sacred Verses’ inscribed inside to trigger a ‘Miracle of Light,’” Nina explained. “It’s done with a bit of sheer magical muscle so it keeps working for a while, though.”
I see. So it’s basically just a Magic Circuit. I didn’t quite understand how ‘magical muscle’ provided a power source, but apparently, Nina’s own status as a Holy Arts practitioner guaranteed its longevity. In other words, once her poured-in mana ran out, the light would die. It sounded pretty half-assed to me, but I suppose magic is often like that. I’d heard ancient Elven magic worked the same way. Regardless, that method wasn’t exactly ‘mass-production’ friendly.
”Alright! How’s this for a start?” Nina asked.
”Yeah, looks good.”
”Hehe! You know, you could praise me a little more, Boss.”
”You did a great job, Nina.”
”Stop… it feels weird when you’re actually being honest,” she said, looking flustered.
After a few more hours of brainstorming, the prototype for the mass-production Luminescent Buddy was finished. But we were only halfway there. As it stood, it was just a glowing d**k. In the Wielope Empire, where the Purity Faction⁶ held sway, most people would be too embarrassed to buy it. We had to design something that looked like a natural lighting fixture without ruining its functionality.
I pulled out a pen and paper. Time for me to do some actual work.
”The problem is the marketing,” I said. “The simplest option is to just make it a straight rod.”
”True,” Nina nodded. “If we give it a stand and make it detachable, people can use it as a lamp right away. Plus, it’s easier to mold without getting air bubbles trapped inside.”
Nina knew the struggle. Making a Dildo-Buddy looks simple, but making a beautiful one is surprisingly difficult.
”But if we do that, it’s just a fancy stick,” I argued. “I’m not saying it needs a full head, but I’d at least like to get a bit of a curve in there.”
”A head-less Buddy? I mean, it’s kind of cute, but a curved lamp would look pretty out of place on a nightstand…”
”True. What if we keep the shape but add a decorative cover to hide the curve?”
”Maybe, but that sounds like a hassle,” Nina countered. “It’s better if you can just grab it the moment you get horny.”
We went back and forth, trading ideas over my rough sketches. She was being surprisingly blunt about the ‘logistics’ of the product. I guess that’s what happens after you’ve been in the workshop this long. I didn’t want to kill the momentum by making her feel self-conscious, so I didn’t point it out.
”It’d be great if it were adjustable so you could set it to different angles,” Nina suggested.
”Not with these materials. It’s not flexible enough. And a snap-on attachment for the head? No, we’d still have to hide the attachment anyway.”
”Oh! What about a ‘Drill-Buddy’?” Nina chirped. “Couldn’t we pass off the spiral shape as some kind of edgy ‘statement piece’?”
”It’s an idea… but Nina, if you walked into a friend’s house and saw a drill-shaped lamp on the table, what would you think?”
”I… might have to take a moment to rethink our friendship.”
”Exactly.”
The debate heated up, but we weren’t getting anywhere. The best option was still ‘the rod.’ But I wondered if that was enough of a hook to get people to buy it.
”It’s tougher than it looks, trying to sell someone just a rod,” Nina sighed.
”Actually… there is one way,” I said.
”Are you messing with me again, Boss?”
”No. It’s just genuinely difficult to pull off. It’s a concept we’ve had since the early days of the shop, but we kept putting it on the back burner. If we’re going to do this, I’ll need to talk to Satsuki too.”
”Court Mage Satsuki?”
Yes. This was a project Satsuki had been trying to figure out with Magic Circuits before she left to hunt the Great Dragons. The circuits always ended up being too bulky for a prototype.
”What if it was a rod that lit up with one switch,” I proposed, “and started vibrating with another?”
Nina’s eyes widened. “Oh!”
It was a simple concept. Back when Satsuki was working on it, she’d only envisioned putting a ‘vibe’ function into a larger Piston Machine. But now…
”I think we can make it happen if we combine the Luminescent Buddy and the Tremble-Buddy⁷,” I said. “It’ll be a tough road, though.”
”I see! Those two functions wouldn’t really interfere with each other. If we put the light in the base and the vibration mechanism in the other end…”
”Exactly. For now, let’s see if we can make this thing hum.”
”Yes, Boss!”
