Chapter 521 Client ②
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
”Now then… I shall begin the surgery.”
”Yes, Doctor! …Wait, Master, what the hell are you even doing?”
I had finally obtained permission to begin the ‘resurrection’ of the battle-hardened “Ddo-Buddy¹,” known as “Warrior Alex.”
As I struck a pose—hands held together in front of my chest to amp up the medical drama atmosphere—my apprentice, Nina-Mailse, looked at me with a pair of deeply dubious eyes.
”I just wanted to try saying it once. Don’t worry about it.”
”You went out of your way to give yourself acting notes… Is this one of those ‘pervy’ things…?”
”No, why would it be? Stop saying stupid things and get ready.”
”That’s my line!”
(Even though she suspects it’s something lewd, the fact that she’s going along with it shows how much she’s been corrupted. Well, I’m the one who corrupted her, I suppose.) Trading our usual banter, we got to work on the preparations for the resurrection.
We needed a knife to cut into the base and extract the internal vibration mechanism.
Then, Mangoron juice² to seal the hole and “Ddo-Buddy Liquid” to restore the outer skin.
Other than that, just a brush to apply the mixtures.
The components had already been moved into the “First Laboratory” in the basement of the “Ddo-Buddy Mansion.” I’d been making headway on the research even while we waited for the client’s response.
”You two have certainly become close… though I suppose you’ve been teasing her like that since before you took her on as an apprentice.”
”Hmm? Are you jealous? Now, now—negative emotions are bad for prenatal care. Here, let me give you a kiss.”
”That’s not—well, maybe it is. I just can’t help but want a peek at the research… Mnh… ♡”
The one offering these adorable remarks was my “Love-Mage,” Satsuki.
Being pregnant, she hadn’t been able to participate much in the lab work lately, which clearly bothered her.
As a result, she had insisted on being present for this “monumental resurrection.”
”From my perspective, Satsuki-san is the one to be envied,” Nina said.
”I think Master should be a little kinder to me, too.”
”Hehe, quite right. I suppose everyone always wants what they don’t have. Nina-san, you’d probably feel lonely if he stopped teasing you, wouldn’t you?” Satsuki teased.
”Satsuki-san!?”
(I felt like they were having some sort of high-level conversation behind my back, but I ignored it and pushed forward with the prep.) Finally, I brought out the star of the show: “Warrior Alex.”
”…He still looks incredible, in a way.”
”Yeah. I honestly have no idea what someone has to do to a thing to make it end up like this…”
The outer skin was so frayed it was practically splintering.
The glans at the tip had been worn down until the ridges were nearly smooth, and there was a small but distinct chip missing from the corner of the base.
It was hard to believe this had happened in only two years…
”I wish I could actually interview the owner.”
”Oh? You haven’t yet?”
”How could I? We don’t even know who the client is, so it’s a moot point.”
”Eh?”
””Eh?””
Satsuki looked at us blankly, and Nina and I returned the look in kind.
From the way she spoke, it sounded as if she knew exactly who the client was…
”Ah—right. Never mind. Look, you need to hurry and bring… ‘Alex’? …back to life.”
”Wait, Satsuki. You know the—”
”Hurry, hurry! Get to it!”
”O-Oh… okay…”
(She was clearly dodging the question, but if she didn’t want to say it, there wasn’t much I could do. I gave up and turned my focus back to “Warrior Alex.” The details could wait until later.)
First, I had to extract the internal “vibration mechanism.” Even though I could fuse it back together, I figured the joint should be somewhere that wouldn’t get wet often, so I sank the knife into the base.
Naturally, this would cause irreversible damage if I slipped, so I was fairly tense.
The “Ddo-Buddy” had a unique texture—firm yet flexible—which transmitted through the blade to my hand.
It was a sensation I’d grown familiar with over the last few weeks of experimentation.
”Alright, the hole is open.”
”It’s a bit anticlimactic, but the inside looks just like a normal ‘Ddo-Buddy’…”
”No, Nina-san. Look closely at the cross-section. And the contents…”
Just as Satsuki pointed out, Alex’s cross-section was incredibly thin from wear.
It was likely from the base switch being pressed thousands of times.
Or perhaps from being gripped so hard to shove it in that the fingers had compressed the material…
(The mental images are a bit much, but as the owner of a magic circuit shop, there’s nothing more rewarding than seeing a product used to its absolute limit.)
”Ah, sand…”
”Those are the ground-up shells of Pororo Snail³s and the remains of Metag Stone⁴s.”
As I removed the switch and emptied the interior, the materials—now reduced to fine, silky particles—spilled out.
As I suspected, Alex’s internals had been pushed far past their operational lifespan.
I felt a small sense of relief that the issue hadn’t been a malfunction in the switch mechanism itself.
I scraped out every last grain of sand and funneled it into a glass jar.
I labeled it: “Alex’s Internal Organs.” (Whether it’s a famous physicist or a world leader from my old world, the bodies of the great have a tendency to be preserved as relics, don’t they?) (?)
Similarly, I carefully stored the piece of the base I’d cut out.
I planned to return these to the client.
It was proof of the “resurrection,” and since they were clearly someone who cherished this item, I figured they’d appreciate them as mementos.
Once the cavity was empty, I used a “Night Light Wand” fitted with a directional magic circuit—basically a flashlight—to inspect the interior.
”Hmm, the inside doesn’t seem to have any structural damage.”
”Wow, so the build quality really is that good? As expected of Master…”
”Heh-heh. You can keep the praise coming, but you’re not getting a bonus.”
”I mean, in the past, I would’ve been totally creeped out. You showing this weird, obsessive devotion to a thing like this…”
(Why does she always have to add that last part?) I gave her a flat, deadpan stare, which made Nina act strangely fidgety.
(I see. She was waiting for me to be mean to her.) I poked her in the ribs, and she let out a happy little squeal.
”Eep! ♡!”
With the inspection done, I gave the interior a quick wash.
I used magic to both produce the water and dry it instantly, finishing the task in seconds.
Next, I inserted the new “internal organs”—the upgraded vibration mechanism.
Now came the crucial step: sealing the hole.
”How are you going to close it up? Won’t the new material just drip out?”
”I’m using a plug I molded in advance. If the material is already solid, we don’t have to worry about it running, right?”
As I spoke, I prepped the plug and brushed Mangoron juice onto the contact surfaces.
I did the same to the cross-section of the main body, melting it slightly with the juice.
Once the hole was perfectly fitted, I used “Hardening Magic” to fuse them.
”…Is that really enough?”
”Yeah. I ran plenty of experiments on samples. However, the durability will be low like this, so the final step is to coat the entire thing in a fresh outer skin.”
”Then it’s time for the final molding. Here you go, Master.”
Observing my progress, Nina handed me the “Ddo-Buddy” metal mold she had kept ready.
This was the original mold—likely the exact one used to create this very “Alex” years ago.
In our shop today, we mostly use multi-unit molds, but back then, we used to craft each one meticulously, one by one.
Feeling a strange sense of nostalgia, I began coating the entirety of “Alex” in Mangoron juice.
The frayed skin slowly dissolved, turning the surface into a slick, gooey film.
Nina poured fresh “Ddo-Buddy Liquid” into the mold, and I floated “Alex” inside.
We rotated him carefully, ensuring the entire body was encased in the new material.
”Alright, here goes nothing!”
I clamped the mold shut and flipped it over.
I opened it once to top off the liquid and repeated the process several times.
This ensured the liquid reached every nook of the mold and bonded perfectly with “Alex.” Naturally, the liquid overflowed, making a mess of the workbench, but I didn’t care.
Now, the moment of truth…
”Heave… ho!”
I cast “Hardening Magic” with the mold still closed.
It was a bit more labor-intensive than the usual process, but nearly identical to how he was first made.
Right now, “Alex” was being born again.
With my heart thumping, I cracked the mold and pulled him out.
”Whoa…!”
”Wow, he really does look brand new.”
”You did it, Master!”
Exclamations of genuine awe escaped us.
(The epic orchestral score and special effects only existed in my head, but “Alex” had been magnificently reborn.) The only signs of his tattered past were the jar of sand and the old base fragment sitting on the tray.
No—only the skin was restored.
I still had to check the functionality.
Feeling the tension again, I pressed the switch at the base.
Immediately, Alex began to vibrate with a powerful, healthy “Vzzzzzz!”
”Yeah. No problems here.”
I let out a long, heavy sigh of relief and turned the switch off.
I felt refreshed after finishing such a big job, but I had one more thing I needed to clear up.
”So, Satsuki. You definitely know the client, don’t you?”
”Ah… so you didn’t forget.”
”How could I forget? Come on, who is it?”
”Well… it’s not so much that I ‘know’ for a fact, but… don’t you think there’s only one person who would use a ‘Ddo-Buddy’ until it ended up in that state?”
Satsuki spoke with a hint of exasperation, but I still couldn’t pin down a specific name.
Customers for these products often used them in ways I could never predict.
I wouldn’t be surprised no matter what kind of heavy user might exist.
I racked my brain for a moment, but when nothing came to mind, I finally threw in the towel.
”…Could you be more specific?”
”I’m talking about—”
