Chapter 580 Family Stories ②
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
Now then, my beloved daughter Momo is currently being juggled like a ball. Whether that’s the cause or not, she’s been growing remarkably fast these days. Remarkably fast—no, too fast. She’s already outgrown the bounds of what I’d call a normal toddler. As expected of Momo-sama, her talent is unrivaled and unique in this world.
”Papa, uppies!”
”What is it, Momo-chan? You want uppies? Of course! Come here, coochie-coochie-coo!”
”Hehehehe.”
Behold! Momo-sama toddles over like the very embodiment of adorableness, and now she’s requesting to be held all on her own! And on top of that, she’s laughing the most adorable “hehehe” laugh! …Well, that’s probably just what any normal toddler does. Her real talent shows up later.
”All done.”
”Aww, no…”
”See ya.”
Momo leaves as soon as she’s bored. That’s normal too. But what’s not normal is that after pushing both hands against me like she was throwing a tantrum, she hopped down from my arms. From my arms while I was standing, holding her.
Needless to say, the ground was several times her height below. But without fear, without injury, she landed with a perfect little hop. The first time it happened, I was shocked. But she doesn’t just jump down—she jumps up too. Her movements are like a cat’s, and by now I’m completely used to it.
”Mn-mn. Waku, Micchan. Nechat yo.”
Translated: “Wakaba-kun, Mikan-chan, big sis is here!” Momo jumps up and onto the baby crib, then starts playing with her younger siblings.
”Ah-ah-ah!”
In response, my beloved son Wakaba with my love-elf Tania raises his voice as if complaining. He was never a very fussy baby, and he doesn’t talk much to us even now, but with his big sister, he’s like this. Though the cause is Momo.
”Earsies, so cute!”
”Ny-ah-ah!”
Right. Momo is completely obsessed with Wakaba’s elf ears. She comes by every single day, poking them, pulling them, even putting them in her mouth—so Wakaba-sama is thoroughly fed up.
But even so, he never lets his magic run wild. He must sense that Momo means no harm. Ah, what a good, sweet boy. As expected of my beloved son.
On a bit of a tangent, Wakaba’s mana circuit bursts have gradually become more controllable. A few months ago, it was dangerous unless someone was watching him, but now he plays at “mana circuit tug-of-war” with Tania and visiting elven reinforcements.
”Hey Momo, I told you not to touch his ears, didn’t I?”
”Mmn, no touch-y. Just look-y.”
”That’s right, good girl.”
”Hehehe.”
She learned the words I kept telling her. “Don’t touch, just look.” Sometimes she still reaches out, so I can’t let my guard down, but Momo is generally well-behaved. And like a toddler, she gets bored fast.
”Micchan, so cute.”
”Un-neh! Neh!”
”Ai. Nechat yo.”
Now Momo starts fussing over my beloved daughter Mikan with my love-dog Laika. Mikan is much friendlier than Wakaba—when Momo comes over, she waves her little stubby arms and demands to be held. Seeing that, Momo immediately hugs her, rubs cheeks, and giggles. It’s too much. The cuteness level inside that crib is ridiculous.
And have you noticed? That’s right—Mikan-sama is already speaking at eight months old! Momo was about the same, and she only knows “mama,” “papa,” and “neh!” for now.
On another tangent, I lost to “mama” again this time. Mothers are strong, as always. Wakaba doesn’t say actual words yet, so I’m hoping for a comeback, but I feel like I’ll lose anyway. After all, I’m currently 0-5…
”Papa!”
”Pa!”
”Yesss! It’s papa! What is it, what is it?”
My face melted by Momo and the others, I was called from the side and peered into another crib. It’s a paradise of happiness no less than the other crib. Inside were my beloved son Silva with my love-“noja” Tina, and my twin daughters Heine and Kaine with my love-wolf Aerith.
That’s right—they were rolling around. Recently, they’ve been practicing sitting up, but they can’t quite support themselves, so they roll this way and that. Bumping heads, bumping bodies. As long as they don’t build up enough speed to actually knock each other over, they’re fine, but they’re not having an easy time of it and they’re letting us know.
”Hehe, yeah. It’s tough, isn’t it?”
”Ah-ah!”
”Ah-oo!”
The three of them can say “mama” and “papa.” But instead of “neh,” they’ve learned “grandpa” and “grandma.” They’re grandparent-pleasing son and daughters. Their adorableness knocks out the fathers-in-law every time, and they writhe in delight daily.
Another tangent: recently, my brother-in-law Martin built a shrine for Momo, and shrines were built for each of their kids too. Any more and the garden of the D**do-Buddy Mansion would get cramped.
But the shrines sitting in the Badcage Estate (a noble mansion) and the Ouka Residence (a wealthy merchant’s home) are pretty surreal. Though the grandpas seem very pleased.
Living together really does make a difference. I visit every day to make sure they recognize me as “papa.” Momo comes once a week, so she’ll probably start calling me soon enough.
”Waku! Miccha! Kaccha!”
”Hehe, are you done with Wakaba and Mikan?”
”Waku! Miccha!”
Speak of the devil—Momo, apparently bored with Mikan now, jumps over to this crib. She points at each one and calls their names, as if checking them off.
She probably didn’t understand my question, so she pretended not to hear. Or maybe she really was just confirming. Checking that her cute little siblings are growing up healthy.
Because Momo, for all her looks, is very attentive. Not just doting, but genuinely taking care of them. When someone poops, she notices before Laika the dog beastman or Aerith the wolf beastman and tells us, “Waku, poopy!”
Wakaba in particular sometimes doesn’t cry even when he’s hungry, but Momo notices and says, “Waku, booby!” I have no idea how she knows, but Momo probably has the sharpest senses in our house right now.
When the succubus attacked the other day, she apparently noticed too. Lily told me later. Though she just sat up, muttered “Papa…?”, and then promptly fell back asleep. I’d like to think she was thinking, “If Papa’s going, it’ll be fine.”
”Papa?”
”Hm? What is it?”
Even with her sharp senses, after checking on all her siblings, she comes back to “papa” and calls out. Of course, I gladly pick her up, but something seems off.
”You hungry? Mama and the others will be back soon, so…”
”Nn-nn. Papa, uh… mm… dan-gerous?”
She racked her brains, really racked them, and the word she squeezed out was that. I looked around to see what was “dangerous.” But honestly, I already know.
”Nn!”
She points to the stairs leading to the second floor. Coming down those stairs were my beloved wives, fresh from their big meeting on “future family planning”…
—
Summary:
Momo’s rapid development astonishes her father as she interacts with her younger siblings. She shows extraordinary awareness, noticing danger, hunger, and even bodily functions before the adults do. The chapter ends with the wives descending the stairs after their family planning meeting, hinting at the serious discussion to come.
