Chapter 598 The Child of a God (So Lovely, It’s Divine) ②

Edited by: Kanaa-senpai

It happened right around noon on the due date, in the parlor of the usual D**do-Buddy Palace.

 ”I’m having the baby.”

My beloved Saint Sister Amelia said it as casually as if she’d just said, “Could you pass the soy sauce?” — except soy sauce didn’t exist in this world.

”Is that so? Then pop it out quick and easy.”

The one who responded was Miranda, my Magic Medicine mentor and our midwife. She’d come by as usual to see her great-grandchild, and she sounded just as relaxed as ever. The way she said it, you’d never guess she was a midwife at all.

 ”Let’s see now… birthing chair, birthing chair…”

 ”Hot water’s ready.”

 ”Clean linens, good to go.”

In turn, those were Laika, my love-dog, Tania, my love-elf, and Lily, my love-slave. They didn’t panic or fuss — they simply did what needed to be done and reported back calmly.

That was all fine and good, but…

”Wait — aren’t you guys way too calm about this…?”

I couldn’t help but point it out. And yet, right after saying that, I was already supporting Amelia and smoothly guiding her toward the delivery room.

”Well, it’s already been the third time this year, hasn’t it?”

”We practiced plenty. It just feels like the expected moment finally arrived…”

”Yes, yes — you two come this way. Be good girls for us.”

That was Satsuki, my first Love Mage, my little sister-in-law Flearis, and Kushe, my second Love Mage — speaking while collecting the children who’d been chasing each other around.

It was true, I suppose — but they say the moment you get too comfortable is when you’re most likely to mess up. Keeping my guard up, I called out to everyone, and we entered the delivery room.

We dressed Amelia in clean, comfortable clothes and settled her onto the birthing chair.

”Yep, her water’s broken. Alright, whenever you’re ready. Give it a nice big push.”

This lady — she’s just enjoying herself, isn’t she? I thought, snarkily, at the old woman’s brusque coaching. Her words were rough, but she was watching over Amelia closely.

She confirmed everything methodically — the tension in her belly, the baby’s condition, Amelia’s expression and breathing, the state of her birth canal. Amelia did her best to answer her.

 ”Nn, fuu—! Y-Yes—!”

By this point even Amelia couldn’t keep a straight face — her breathing was ragged and her voice strained with pain. I wiped the sweat beading on her forehead and cheered her on.

But Amelia’s labor wasn’t going as well as I’d expected. With my other wives, the baby would have been out by now — yet there was still no sign of it coming.

Ten minutes passed. Twenty. An hour after we’d entered the delivery room, everyone was beginning to realize this wasn’t going like the others.

”Hmm, that’s strange. It feels like it should be coming any second now…”

”Hey, old woman — can’t you do something?”

”Now, now, calm down. This is actually pretty normal. There are plenty of babies that take hours longer from here. You just need to support your wife properly.”

She talked me down so reasonably I couldn’t even argue. Given everything that had happened before, I’d somehow gotten the idea that this child might be burdened with some strange destiny or divine blessing — and I’d drifted pretty far from what normal people experience.

Come to think of it, most births take half a day or longer. Which meant this was likely going to be a long haul. Did we need to start rotating rest breaks? I was running through calculations when —

 ”Aaaahhh—!!”

 ”Amelia—!?”

 ”I-I’m pushing it out—!”

Amelia suddenly cried out in pain. I panicked — it seemed the baby was actually coming right now. Just as I’d started thinking this was going to be a long slog, it seemed this child was incredibly contrary. Even during pregnancy it kept me on edge, and now it was being willful even before being born. This kid was a little demon.

”Alright now — push in time with the contractions. It’ll hurt, but don’t hold your breath.”

 ”Haa, haa—! Y-Yes—!”

For the first time in all this, the old woman actually stepped up as a midwife should. Having delivered hundreds of babies, she was incredibly reliable. Another difficult period stretched on.

 ”Fuuuu—!”

I found myself thinking: do all parents go through this? I suddenly had new respect for every parent who’d ever pushed through this moment. All I could do for the woman I loved as she cried out in pain was wipe her sweat — it felt so helpless.

Come to think of it, I hadn’t heard the children crying at all. Were they okay? …Oh, right. I’d been wondering why Amelia was going through so much extra trouble — Momo-sama wasn’t here today.

Last year and this year, she’d been the one to handle it with a gentle swoop-swoop-swoop. But she couldn’t reach out to the child inside Amelia’s womb, even Momo-sama.

Damn it — blocking out Momo-sama’s power? This isn’t a blessing, it’s a curse. I was even starting to think absurd thoughts like, Is this kid a demon god or something?

I shook the thought away — because Amelia, her hands trembling, had begun to pray.

And so, I did the same. And then — we saw something that defied belief.

 ”This is…”

 ”Oh, God…”

Motes of light were dancing inside the delivery room. They appeared and vanished, growing slowly larger. The scene was very much like the vision the Holy Figure had created at the Great Cathedral — but something about it felt different.

 ”Amelia…?”

 ”Fuu, fuu… I didn’t do anything. Oh — so this child really… no, perhaps… it’s this child’s own power…”

Even through her pain, Amelia forced those words out. I didn’t know whether to be happy or angry. But one thing was clear — if someone was deliberately creating this scene, they had awful taste. Because…

”The head’s out! Almost there! …Wait, what’s this—!?”

Amelia’s — to be precise, our child’s head, just as it was emerging — was glowing. Brightly. The tension of the moment broke. It’s not a firefly, for crying out loud…!

”I-It’s hard to see… w-well, never mind! Just keep pushing—!”

 ”Fuuuu—!”

Despite her hesitation, the old woman carried through with her job as midwife, and Amelia began pushing again. Gradually, our glowing child emerged into the world, and the room grew painfully bright. Honestly, just as she’d said — it was hard to see and distracting. For the love of all that’s holy, could I focus on Amelia and the baby, please…!?

This time, the prayers went unanswered — the delivery room only grew brighter and brighter. And then…

 ”Waaah! Waaah! Waaah!”

 ”It’s out! I can’t tell if it’s a boy or a girl yet, but…”

”You did it, Amelia! Thank you — thank you so much…”

 ”Haa, haa… yes…”

It had arrived. Safe and sound. Amelia and my child was — well, whatever it was, it had entered this world. The old woman groped blindly in the radiant light, dipped our as-yet-unidentified child in the bathing water, and brought it over to us.

”…Is this ‘Holy Arts’? Can’t you fix it somehow?”

”I-I don’t know… I’ve never heard of a ‘Holy Arts’ that makes the whole body glow…”

”Hmm, this is a problem… Hey, c’mon, show us your cute little face, won’t you? …Oh?”

We reached out together, the two of us holding our child in our arms. Whether or not our words reached it, the light gradually dimmed — and then, vanished completely. Amelia and I cried out at the same time.

 ”A boy!”

He was a remarkably precious little boy, with hair the same pale blue as Amelia’s.

Notes:

• Amelia – A voluptuous, light-blue-haired “Saint” Sister of the Canarias convent who runs soup kitchens, this shy, blushing religious figure is the protagonist Kento’s wife. Pregnant with his child after a sacred conception and wearing his ring, her intimate bond and controversial marriage to him spark intense ecclesiastical debate, yet she remains as devoted as ever.

• Miranda – Granny Miranda is an elderly, witch-like midwife with silver hair and a weathered cloak. The widow of Tadayasu, she is grandmother to Satsuki, great-grandmother to Hazuki, and a shared mentor to the narrator and Barbara. She masters magic medicine to monitor unborn babies. Beneath her gruff exterior and old-fashioned rural speech lies a tender warmth.

• Lily – Jin’s pink-haired, blue-eyed love-slave, secret magic user, and wife/concubine pregnant with her second child. Calling the protagonist “Master” (who calls her a wanton), she is a Harvest shop slave and test subject resembling Nada. Energetic and expressive with V-signs, she tends the mansion garden, watches repairs, and informs him on domestic and political matters.

• Flearis – A pale, pink-haired covert unit member serving as a diplomatic envoy, guard, shopkeeper, and Coalmine Kingdom liaison. The protagonist’s relative—Lily’s sister and Martin’s younger foster sister/sister-in-law—she displays a cold, vengeful pragmatism, notably when reporting Lily’s words to Martin. Though only mentioned, she is noted as next in line for mating season.

• Satsuki – Miranda’s granddaughter is a robed court mage and former top Academy student with long black hair and mixed Western-Eastern features. Now a Harvest Love-Mage at the Ddo-Buddy Palace, she is the protagonist’s playful, warm wife and mother to Hazuki and Nagatsuki. She orchestrates family conversations, tutors her husband, assists in prototype design, and is friends with pregnant Amelia.

• Kushe – Kento’s companion and Coalmine’s head Court Mage, this blunt, deadpan woman has haphazard dark green hair and a loose robe. Elegant in combat, she delivers reality checks, leaks secrets, breeds Nixfen monsters, complains about her knees, and is bewildered by Kento’s slime yet next in line for his mating season. She joins a group learning to act spoiled toward him but is otherwise only mentioned.

• Momo – Exceptionally cute and energetic, this pink-haired, one-year-old toddler is the eldest daughter of the protagonist (Jin) and Lily, and sibling to Wakaba and Mikan. Inheriting her father’s ear and eyebrow shape, she is affectionate, babbles with toddler mispronunciations, and loves walking in the garden. Remarkably, she also possesses the ability of future sight.
