Chapter 239 The Wild Magician
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
”Ugh, my back hurts… Why is the road so rough?”
The person complaining while getting off the carriage was that wandering magician who had visited Froylen Village.
The magician, who had been shaken around in the carriage for a long time, cast a healing spell on their back while looking around.
”This is the frontier settlement, huh? It’s developed more than I thought. Hmm…?”
As the magician looked around, she noticed something and turned her face towards the northeast.
”There’s a relatively strong magical energy gathering over there, I wonder what it is.”
The magician headed towards the direction they were curious about, which turned out to be a training ground.
(A training ground, huh? I didn’t expect to see this even in a remote place like this. I heard rumors that people were gathering here, but I didn’t think it would be this many…)
”Ah!”
”What?”
The magician was suddenly called out to from the side and turned to see 3 kids staring at them.
”Miss, aren’t you the one who came to Froylen Village before? You got stuck in the snow during the Ice Star festival last year and stayed in the village for a few days.”
”Uh, yeah…”
”Oh, you really remember! Good job, Seira.”
”A person with such a distinctive outfit, how could I forget? But why didn’t you remember, Ranbaa?”
”She was only here for 2 or 3 days, so it’s no wonder I forgot.”
”Don’t say that right in front of her, it’s not nice.”
”Uh, and you guys are…”
”Don’t you remember? We’re the 3 who asked you to teach us magic!”
”…Really?”
”What?”
Seira’s eyes widened in surprise at the doubting tone.
It had been less than a year since they met during the Ice Star festival last year.
She didn’t think they’d be suspected like this, even if their face and physique had changed a lot, or if she had completely forgotten.
On the other hand, the magician didn’t remember the faces of the 3 people either.
Even if she didn’t remember, she could have accepted it since they themselves said so, but why did she say something suspicious?
It’s because the information she has and the magical powers of the 3 people in front of her don’t match.
(The quality of their magical powers isn’t that great――but they’re just like a magician who barely graduated from magic school after 3 years of studying magic, but I was asked to teach magic to those kids last year during the Ice Star event, and they’ve developed their powers this much in less than a year?)
It’s impossible, even if they didn’t miss a single day of magic training.
One could say one person might have talent, but it’s impossible for all 3 of them to have that kind of talent.
There’s no way they had high-quality magical powers from the start, and if they did, I would have felt uneasy when I met them last year. It’s clear they didn’t have much magical power back then.
What on earth happened to these 3? The magician was genuinely interested.
”What kind of training did you guys receive here?”
”Huh? Nothing special, we just received normal basic magic training at first, and then we practiced combat in a practical format.”
”What was that basic training like?”
The 3 of them talked about the magic training they received in the settlement, feeling a bit pressured by the magician’s probing questions.
They thought that the way of doing basic training was different for each person, and that some special method must have been used to achieve such rapid growth in magical power. However, the content of the training was surprisingly ordinary, which made the magician raise an eyebrow.
”You guys, you’re hiding something, aren’t you?”
”No, we’re not! We didn’t do anything special!”
”Liar! There’s no way your magical power could grow this much in such a short period of time with that kind of training!”
”Magical power? Is our magical power really growing that much?”
”Don’t you realize? Normally, it takes at least 3 years of intense training to reach that level, but you guys reached it in less than a year. This is clearly abnormal!”
The 3 of them looked at each other upon hearing the magician’s words, but none of them had any recollection of doing anything special. However, Ranbaa suddenly spoke up.
”Oh! Isn’t it special to use someone else’s magical power to fight?”
”Use someone else’s magical power?”
”Yeah! I learned a way of using magic from ‘someone’, and everyone says it’s ‘interesting’ and praises me. But the magician community doesn’t think highly of it, though.”
”…Can you show me that magic?”
”Sure thing!”
Ranbaa’s vague mention of the person who taught him magic was because Neil had told him to keep it a secret.
When some magicians asked to become Neil’s apprentices after the incident with the different dimensional magic, Neil had rejected them all.
If a kid who claimed to have learned magic from Neil appeared, it would be easy to imagine the jealousy and resentment from those around them.
That’s why Neil had warned the 3 not to mention his name.
Anyway, the 3 of them began to show off the magic they had learned from Neil and modified on their own in front of the magician.
Naturally. The idea itself is interesting, and it’s enough to make someone who doesn’t know anything about magic hesitate to use it, just because they’re being controlled by someone else’s magic power. But magic itself is just a trick, and it’s not a big deal even if someone’s magic power is being used. No matter how much one practice this kind of magic…
The magician suddenly realized something.
Controlling someone else’s magic power is way harder than controlling your own.
As magic power increases, so does the difficulty, and practically speaking, few mages can wield it effectively.
The magic those 3 showed was like comparing heaven and earth, and it was ridiculous to even compare them.
(So, is that why? Even though it’s a tiny amount, using someone else’s magic power in training every day, and their magic control has improved so much in such a short time?)
Magic power has individual differences, and the sense of control changes depending on that.
Controlling one type of magic power as an individual is easier than trying to control tens of different magic powers.
Logically, it makes sense, but as a magician, this training is just unbelievable.
Magician training is meant to enhance one’s attribute magic and expand the range of magic that can be mastered. But those 3 are just practicing magic that’s hardly useful in real battles, and it’s inefficient according to the norms of magician training. Yet, they’ve achieved this much growth in such a short time.
(A magician who can control someone else’s magic power to this extent… It’s like…)
The magician grits their teeth in frustration.
She refuse to acknowledge it, she’d never admit to such a thing.
”Ah, ah, Miss?”
”…I have an urgent matter to attend to, so I’ll be leaving now.”
She’s probably making a terrible face twisted with jealousy and hatred right now.
Without paying attention to the 3 people who looked intimidated, the magician left the training grounds while aware of their own ugly emotions.
Her destination was Neil’s mansion, the ruler of the frontier settlement.
