Chapter 247 Amelia’s Efforts and Estesia’s Essence

Edited by: Kanaa-senpai

 Then Amelia changed.

She became motivated in her magic lessons, seriously teaching Neil.

Even though she started teaching seriously, Amelia still lacked the skills as an instructor. However, they both began to work hard together to solve problems whenever Neil got stuck, which was a step forward, and Neil was learning faster than before.

As Neil grew as a magician, he tried to use what he learned to master new spells, but often his ideas were too out there, and he didn’t have the skills to learn them at all.

Amelia secretly called those spells “homework from master” and started to learn them instead of Neil.

Amelia found the new spells easier than the ones she took a month to learn. However, it still took her a few days to master them because Neil’s ideas were often complex. She enjoyed the challenge of learning and felt happy every time Neil praised her for her progress.

While Amelia was enjoying her fulfilling days, there were signs of trouble in Neil’s lessons.

He had nearly finished the basics and was starting advanced topics. However, once he reached this stage, he struggled to remember what he learned.

The advanced material was tougher than the basics. Although he had some special abilities from being reincarnated, they only helped him remember things quickly for a while. After that, his memory began to fade quickly.

Neil’s skills in both swordsmanship and magic are only average, and this is affecting him. However, Amelia, unaware of this, thinks it’s her fault for not teaching him well. So, she started to learn not just about magic, but also about teaching methods.

As she read books by other magicians that she had previously thought were unnecessary, she made surprising discoveries.

She realized that even things she considered obvious could be puzzling to others. This perspective, which she could never have reached since she was naturally talented, helped Amelia grow both as a teacher and as a person.

Thanks to Amelia’s efforts, there was some progress, but it was still very slow, like a cow’s pace.

While Amelia gained a lot from her connection with Neil, she felt that all she had taught him were the basics of magic. She was only receiving and not giving back much, and for the first time, she cursed her own shortcomings.

Still, she believed that if she kept trying, she would eventually be rewarded. To make up for her weaknesses, Amelia continued to work hard.

However, this effort was mostly unrelated to her magical talent. No matter how much Amelia tried, her teaching skills were below average, and it didn’t go as smoothly as when she learned magic.

”I’m sorry, Teacher. This is still too difficult for me…”

Neil started calling Amelia “Teacher” because this was about teaching the basics of being a magician, not about passing down magic in a master-student relationship.

At first, Amelia thought this was fine, but now she felt differently.

She wanted to give back to Neil as much as she could and share her magic with him.

She strongly desired to be more than just a teacher; she wanted to be Neil’s master.

However, Amelia’s magic was designed for Amelia Pordhail to use. The skills required were far beyond what a typical magician could master, and even top magicians found it nearly impossible to learn.

No matter how hard Amelia tried to teach, there was no way Neil could learn such magic, and every time Neil apologized for not being able to grasp it, he felt guilty, thinking it was his fault.

Every time Neil said the word “teacher,” he felt like crying because he couldn’t be the master he wanted to be.

In the end, Amelia couldn’t teach him a single spell, and after years of effort, she finished her role as Neil’s instructor without success.

* * *

”──That was my first real failure in life. I learned that not all efforts are rewarded, and this is what unrecognized effort feels like. Only then did I truly begin to understand other people’s feelings.”

 ”……”

”I respect Neil-sama because he is my master. That’s why I couldn’t ignore your comments that belittled him. This is part of why I have changed and why I respect Neil-sama.”

Estesia, who had been listening to the story of Amelia and Neil’s meeting, was left speechless, staring blankly at the ground.

As Amelia wondered if she had disappointed Estesia with her story, Estesia suddenly spoke up.

 ”Can I ask you something?”

”If it’s something I can answer.”

”Are there others who admire that man like you do?”

”Oh, there are many. Of course, the people from the Count Atmiras family, but also Meisy-sama from the Duke Novak family. Recently, I’ve heard he’s on good terms with representatives from major firms like Harvest Hoe and the Sincere Dwarf.”

 ”…I see.”

 ”?”

Amelia raised an eyebrow at the strange question, but she couldn’t see Estesia’s downcast expression, so she didn’t notice it.

It wasn’t just Amelia; Neil could sense something on the surface, but he was too focused on that to understand why Estesia was so devoted to Amelia. He completely missed the deeper reason.

If Estesia truly admired Amelia, she would have tried to imitate her, including her magic and appearance.

However, Estesia looked like a classic magician straight out of a story.

Estesia loved stories, especially tales of heroes, and she had read hundreds of them.

It’s not unusual for a child to get deeply immersed in such stories.

The admiration comes from being an ignorant child who doesn’t know the world, but as they grow up and understand reality, they realize those are just dreams, and everyone eventually wakes up from them.

Estesia should have been one of those who woke up, but something kept her tied to the world of dreams.

That something was Amelia Pordhail, who accomplished the incredible feat of ending wars all over the world. It was just like a hero from a fairy tale, and young Estesia’s heart raced at the thought that stories in books weren’t just dreams.

One day, she wanted to be a hero like Amelia Pordhail. That was the root of Estesia’s almost excessive admiration for her hero (Amelia).

A fanatic for heroes, that was the essence of Estesia Pordhail, and thus her obsession wasn’t limited to Amelia Pordhail but extended to all heroic figures.

However, it is not the kind of hero that exists in many historical tales; only the true heroes that are passed down as stories are the ones that Estesia believes in.

Estesia has read many stories, but among them, she particularly liked the tale of the “Foolish Hero.”

The main character of this tale is a man who lacks confidence and is quite self-deprecating, making him not very heroic at all. Yet, strangely, he attracts talented people and is loved by many.

At first, he is just a cowardly man, but as he hears the voices of those who admire him, he gradually starts to gain confidence and eventually becomes someone called a hero.

If it ended there, it would be a cliché hero story, but the unique part of this tale is that the protagonist does not undergo dramatic growth to become a hero; he remains a fool from start to finish.

Although his feelings change, the evaluation that he is inferior compared to the talented people around him never changes throughout the story.

Despite this, Estesia felt a charm in the fact that he became someone called a hero.

However, it is practically impossible for such an inferior person to become a hero; it was only because of the creator’s intervention that this inferior person could experience a series of fateful encounters and events that allowed him to become a hero.

Without that, a fool could never become a hero while remaining a fool.

Even Estesia, who believes in heroes, thought this was impossible, but right now, she was feeling the presence of a hero that seemed impossible.

(Ah, I never thought there would be someone like that besides Amelia Pordhail…!)

The idea that a dream story is just a dream was shattered by Amelia’s existence.

Then, there’s no reason to deny another dream story that has appeared right in front of me.

 ”Neil Atmiras.”

The words that slipped from Estesia’s mouth held an unusual intensity in her eyes.
