Volume 1 Chapter 23 Miscalculation

Edited by: Kanaa-senpai

On the next training break, I went to visit Mr. Tethyrkan, who Mr. Goetec had written a recommendation for. I went to the address by myself. But when I got there, Mr. Tethyrkan wasn’t home, and the person living there said it was already an empty house when they moved in. They didn’t know anything about Mr. Tethyrkan.

”Mr. Goetec did say he might not be there either. This is a problem. I’m stuck here… Wait, I should ask around the neighborhood.”

Thinking that, I went into an old little shop nearby, but I faced discrimination again.

They said they had nothing to talk about with humans. They were worried that if they talked about an elf’s private matters to a human, it could cause trouble.

It’s frustrating, but it looks like I need Puruun to help me if I want to make any progress.

But right now, I have no idea when Puruun will show up.

I decided to ask Una, the elf instructor at the Military Training Camp who usually treats me well, about finding an elf.

”Looking for an elf, huh? You’ll have to check with the Government office. But it’s generally tough, not just because you’re human. Usually, a qualified lawyer has to apply for reasons like lawsuits, or you need a high-ranking elf to help you out. … Oh, you could also try a private investigation agency.”

”I see. It sounds like all of that will cost money.”

I can’t decide about money without talking to Puruun first. But I was happy that the teacher answered me so kindly, so I decided to ask a different question that had been on my mind.

”Instructor, I… sorry, I’m. Since I came to the Royal Capital, I haven’t met any humans. I want to talk to my own kind about some things. Where can I find them? I heard there are some in the Military too. Even if they’re not here, will I be able to meet them once I get assigned?”

”Ah, I understand. I get how you feel. But there are really very few humans walking around in the Royal Capital. You might have already noticed, but it’s really hard for humans to live here. Most humans end up struggling and sink to the lowest levels, or they live like disposable pawns for some shady groups. But if you get officially hired by the Military, you’ll probably meet them soon.”

”Really? So there are humans in the Military in the Royal Capital…”

”…Yuuta. Are you misunderstanding something? There are no humans in the Military stationed in the Royal Capital.”

 ”Huh?”

”I don’t think the Military is being discriminatory, but… it’s just that they believe it’s hard for humans to live in the Royal Capital. So, human soldiers who get officially hired by the Military are quickly transferred to units outside the Royal Capital.”

”But I heard that you stay in the Royal Capital for a few years after being assigned…”

”Yeah, that’s the official story. But there are always exceptions.”

This is serious… I need to rethink our whole plan.

If I get officially hired by the Military, will I leave the Royal Capital right away?

I can’t just leave Ms. Akari in the Royal Capital, and first of all, I won’t be able to investigate the return.

That day, I wrote “Emergency” on the message board at Puruun’s place and said we should meet at Ms. Humari’s merchant guild on the next training break.

”This is a problem. If Yuuta goes far away alone, what was the point of coming to the Royal Capital?”

 Puruun looked confused.

”I’m sorry. The merchant guild didn’t have that much information.”

Ms. Humari said apologetically. As we were looking at each other, Mr. Agohige walked into the office.

”Hey, Mr. Yuuta. Ms. Puruun. How are you? Oh, do you have some kind of problem?”

We explained our current situation to Mr. Agohige.

”Got it. So, Mr. Yuuta, if that’s the case, it’s not a good idea to join the military right now. Once you get officially hired, you can’t leave the military for at least 5 years, and you won’t have much choice about where you work.”

 Mr. Agohige said so.

”But if I don’t join the military, I might not find a job at all, and I don’t want to cause trouble for my village. I guess I have to put my family’s needs first and just go to my assigned post…”

Mr. Agohige thought for a while before speaking again.

”So, Mr. Yuuta, we can’t do anything right away. Stay at the training camp for as long as you can to buy some time. During that time, let’s think about your job options and how you can leave the military without bothering the village. I have to head back to Tokura Village in less than 2 months, but I’ll get Humari to help too. You’ve done a lot for the merchant guild, so I need to show a bit of my connections.”

Mr. Agohige seemed a bit confident, like he had a plan.

Well, if I don’t actively try to earn credits, I won’t get officially hired right away, and I can stay as an apprentice until next spring. Honestly, at the rate I’m going, I might actually fail.

Both Puruun and I have been working hard with the idea of living together in the Royal Capital, so I decided to follow Mr. Agohige’s advice.

After that, I went to the little shop near the old Mr. Tethyrkan’s house and asked Puruun to check it out, but it seemed like the shop didn’t know anything either.

Damn it, they acted so important!

While I was getting angry, Puruun calmed me down and asked around a few nearby places, but we still didn’t find any clues.

Since Puruun’s final exam was coming up, we didn’t go on a date that day, and I just walked her back to her dorm.
