Volume 2 Chapter 12 Founding Festival
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
”Wow! The weather is amazing!”
Ms. Akari says while holding an umbrella.
On the morning of the founding festival, I left home with Ms. Akari, Karin, and Melon to head to the venue. I think the highlight of this year’s festival is definitely the generator.
There’s a slightly larger river on the south side of the manor, and last year we built a watermill there to grind flour using its power.
About 2 years ago, a guy named Shu from India came to the manor, and since he was an electrical engineer, he suggested trying to generate electricity with the watermill.
We formed a project team and completed it after almost a year of work.
Among the items that Ellulu brought from Tomori was a solar panel, but it was just a kid’s craft level, and it could barely charge a smartphone in a day.
However, thanks to the generator, we were able to run chargers for AC power as well.
Using that AC charger, we could now use NiCd (nickel-cadmium) rechargeable batteries, which means Ellulu’s small radio should work too, and there will be a public test for it today.
”Ah, the lord is here too!”
Karin happily runs over to the VIP seat where Sir Aaron is sitting.
”Hey, wait! Show some restraint in official settings!!”
My loud voice seems to not reach Karin, and she plops down right next to Sir Aaron.
”Well, well, Yuuta. It’s fine. Today is a festival. No need for formality.”
”Sir Aaron, please don’t spoil her too much…”
At that moment, the event coordinator approached and spoke to Sir Aaron.
”Lord, everything is ready, so please come this way. And… this young lady is the daughter of the organizer, right? Perfect, she can help out too.”
”Huh? Me?”
”Yes. Now, young lady, please take this machine and go to that dwarf on the other side of the river. Lord, this way please.”
And so, Sir Aaron and Karin faced each other across the river, about 50 meters apart.
”Yuuta. Is this… could it be that thing?”
”Yeah. It’s the unveiling of the radio.”
”Radio?”
Melon reacted curiously to my conversation with Ms. Akari.
”Yeah, just watch closely. You might have to build one of those in the future.”
”Now then, are you both ready?”
Ah, the one hosting is Mr. Shu.
”Alright, my lord. Just hold down this button here… and when it beeps and turns green, please say something.”
”Okay. Like this?”
There was a beep, and the lamp in front of me lit up green.
”Hey, Karin. Can you hear me?”
Sir Aaron muttered.
”Yes. When you’re done talking, let go of the button… and if you add ‘please’ at the end of your sentence, it will let them know you’ve finished what you wanted to say.”
After a brief pause, I thought the lamp turned red, and then I heard Karin’s voice right next to me.
”My lord──. I love you──. Please!”
”What!?”
The first voice over the radio was a love call, and even Sir Aaron seemed taken aback, while everyone watching burst into laughter.
”…that idiot…”
Both Ms. Akari and I felt like we wanted to crawl into a hole. However, after that, there were several exchanges between Sir Aaron and Karin, and Melon watched the scene with bated breath.
”Phew. Was that okay? It’s a convenient thing, but the etiquette is quite strict.”
That’s true. It’s no wonder Sir Aaron feels that way. Getting used to that thing is pretty tough.
”…Yuuta. That’s amazing. It can send voices far away. But, I think smartphones can send voices too, right?”
”Yeah, in reality, smartphones are way more convenient, but the technical difficulty is on a whole different level. That thing is fundamentally much simpler compared to smartphones.”
”I see. But if that could be used over longer distances or by a lot of people… isn’t that quite a national secret?”
”Yeah… that might be true. But I hadn’t really thought about it that way…”
”Well, since we’re in such a rural area, maybe we don’t need to be too nervous about it right now… I see. The reason we were dispatched is also to confirm those security aspects…”
”That’s so exaggerated.”
”It’s not exaggerated. Right now, we’re still in an alliance with the neighboring Apocalypse Empire, but that military joint research facility has been shut down. And at the time of the closure, the Empire took all the gate-related documents compiled by the Sistemador.”
He said, his voice calm but heavy with concern.
”I’ve also heard that the exiled Mr. Asunabal is getting quite a good treatment. So, the neighboring country is now our number one virtual enemy.”
”I see. I don’t want war or anything, but that queen… she probably sees everything coming.”
”Exactly. We need to be careful and assess the technology here…”
With those thoughts in mind, we continued to look at the exhibits, but Melon’s focus was incredible, persistently asking questions about anything she didn’t understand.
As evening approached, each group began to wrap up their displays. Tonight, a banquet would start in the square.
”How was it?”
I asked Melon for her thoughts.
”Yeah. Just imagining being able to use what I saw today in alchemy gets me excited. Of course, the radio, but I’m also thinking about that black panel that generates electricity… what was it called? Solar panel? I wonder if I can transmute that. And personally, that miso soup made from the broth of the bark of that Kusuba tree was the best.”
”I see. I’m glad it was helpful. While I’m out in the Royal Capital, do your best with your research.”
”Geez. You make it sound like it’s someone else’s problem…”
As the sun set, the tables in the square were lit up by torches, and dishes were laid out.
Sir Aaron stood in front and began with a few words, but surprisingly, a heated thing was being used as lighting. Apparently, this was also a souvenir from Ellulu.
”Well… it’s bright, but surprisingly hot. However… everyone, thank you for your hard work today. It was very meaningful for me to see everyone’s daily achievements. This time, a mage team from the Royal Capital has come, and they will be working with us on research for the next year. So, let’s look forward to the results in a year and enjoy tonight to the fullest. Cheers!!”
”Cheers!!”
The people in the venue and the dwarves all started raising their cups at once.
Ms. Akari and Karin were called over to chat with Sir Aaron, but I was also in charge, so I went around thanking everyone who had worked hard on the preparations today.
”Hey! You in charge! Let’s drink together!” Mr. Shu called out to me. He seemed really pleased that today’s experiment was a big success and was quite drunk.
I reluctantly had a couple of drinks with him before moving on to the next person. Wow, if I keep this up, I’m going to get pretty drunk myself.
”Hey, Yuuta! Don’t drink too much! I know it’s tough to entertain everyone, but take it easy, okay? I’m taking Karin home first, so enjoy yourself!”
Ms. Akari said as she took Karin and left.
”Phew, finally gone. It was tough to handle her. If I just got engaged to Karin, even if it was just for show, would she calm down a bit?”
Sir Aaron grumbled right behind me.
”Ah, Sir Aaron, you’re joking, right? …Right?”
”What’s up, Yuuta? Are you already drunk? Do you think I’d make such a joke?”
”Well, that’s a bit harsh…” Everyone around us burst into laughter.
Eventually, Sir Aaron also went home, and the party started to break up little by little, but there were still quite a few people drinking.
Well, it’s a special festival after all.
We can clean up the venue tomorrow, so I’ll let them drink as much as they want.
However, it’s not snowing yet, but it’s getting pretty cold at night.
I wandered around the venue to make sure no one would catch a cold and was called out to.
”Yuuta…”
”Huh? What’s up, Melon? Didn’t you go home with Karin and the others?”
”Haha. It seems like the alchemy team is still having a blast over there since events like this don’t happen often. So, Yuuta… can I talk to you for a sec?”
”Sure.”
Then, we moved a little away from the banquet hall, and Melon started talking.
”Yuuta, you’re leaving for the Royal Capital soon, right?”
”Yeah. I’m planning to leave in 3 days. I’m sorry we’re missing each other after you came all this way. But, well, please take care of Ms. Akari and Karin for me.”
”Sure thing. But, in return, can I ask you for a favor?”
”Of course. Anything.”
”Can you… make love to me?”
”Huh?! Are you drunk?”
”How dare you! That’s so rude! Yuuta, you’ve always been so insensitive. You’re making a girl say this, and you’re being so blunt about it!”
”Oh, sorry… I didn’t mean to offend you.”
”You might have forgotten, but I still want to be your 4th wife… My feelings haven’t changed.”
”Well, I mean, I’m not sure about that… I’m already an old man in my thirties.”
”What does that have to do with anything? Do you hate me that much? I thought I had given my first time to you that night… But when I asked Sister El later, she said you only touched me lightly with your fingers… So I’m still a virgin, thanks to you! I won’t tell Mama Akari or my sister, I promise… Please…”
Melon started to cry as she spoke.
Ah, she’s definitely drunk.
But Melon is usually so serious that when she’s drunk, her true, honest self comes out.
And Melon is an adult now.
I can’t just ignore her after she’s said all this.
With that thought, I gently placed my hand on Melon’s shoulder and led her into the shadows near the riverbank.
