Volume 2 Chapter 3 The Story of Yokosuka
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
Around the time summer vacation was ending, Tomori got a call from Yuuta’s dad about handling Mr. Gregory’s military notes and knife.
”I think it should be fine to deliver them to the embassy or military base, but I’m sure they’ll ask where it came from. If that happens, I can’t really lie… It’s been 6 months since you came back, TomTom, and I want to sort this out soon, but I just can’t figure it out.”
Tomori agreed. It would be bad if they started digging into the source.
”How about, just as an example… writing ‘Please take care of this’ on a paper bag and leaving it at the entrance of the base?”
Yuuta’s mom suggested.
”Hmm. That might be the only option… but what if it gets left behind and found, or if some weird person takes it? What about forcing it onto a soldier who looks like they don’t know anything?”
Tomori replied.
”Yeah, that could work. But is there even a U.S. Army base around here?”
As the uncle scratched his head, the aunt chimed in.
”Does it really have to be the U.S. Army? Any American military would do, right?”
”That’s true. In that case, how about Yokosuka? There are a lot of Navy families living around, so we could pick someone who wouldn’t cause any trouble…”
”Yokosuka… sounds nice. Navy curry and military surplus shops and all that…”
The aunt said. It’s not like they’re going there for sightseeing… Tomori thought but didn’t say it out loud.
”What’s Yokosuka?”
Ellulu asked Tomori.
”It’s a town by the sea. There are a lot of Self-Defense Force and U.S. Navy ships. Plus, many Americans live there, and I’ve heard they have thrift shops from over there. I’ve never been, but the Navy curry is famous.”
”Curry… I don’t like it…”
Ellulu grimaced.
Beastfolk generally prefer milder flavors compared to here, and they don’t use spices at all. The first time they made Ellulu try curry rice after coming here, she cried because her mouth hurt, and since then, she never wanted to eat it again.
But Tomori wants to try Navy curry.
”Uncle. Then I’ll go to Yokosuka. Yuuta asked me to do it.”
”Ah, that’s a relief, but are you okay? Don’t push yourself too hard.”
The uncle looks a bit worried.
”If Tomori is going, then I’m going too!”
Ellulu raises both hands.
”No way, you can’t. You’ll stand out too much.”
”Eh? I wanna go, I wanna go, I wanna go! I wanna see the ocean! Puruun has seen the ocean, but I haven’t!”
Ellulu whines.
”Haha, TomTom. If you’re careful not to stand out, it should be fine. You really want to go… and with 2 of you, you can cover each other.”
”Geez, Uncle, you’re too soft on Ellulu… Well, it can’t be helped. Alright, I’ll take Ellulu with me.”
After that, they had a quick strategy meeting, and the next day, Tomori and Ellulu headed to Yokosuka from Shinagawa on the KQ line.
The plan was to find a friendly-looking drunk soldier in a place called Dobuita Street, which is a bar area popular with the navy, and hand over a paper bag containing Mr. Gregory’s military ticket and a knife, while saying, “Please take care of this,” and then quickly leave.
She wonders if they can really tell which soldiers are friendly drunks… Well, let’s just give it a shot. Compared to what she did with the bandits over there… Tomori steeled herself.
There was still some time before the drunks would start showing up. Tomori took Ellulu around Yokosuka City for sightseeing, checking out shops that sold military surplus and second-hand clothes.
By around 8 in the evening, Tomori and Ellulu stepped into Dobuita Street. The name sounds fancy, but it’s well-maintained as a tourist spot, and it’s completely safe for women and children to walk through at night.
Sure enough, there were big guys who looked like navy soldiers chatting happily with mugs in hand at various shops.
Now, about those friendly-looking drunk soldiers…
Looking around, Tomori spotted some good candidates. There were 3 soldiers, probably in their thirties, looking relaxed and having a good time, their faces flushed. Plus, they were sitting at a table outside, so Tomori could call out to them directly from the street.
Gathering her courage, Tomori approached the 3 and suddenly handed a paper bag to one of them.
”Here you go, thanks!”
Saying that, she immediately ran off, with Ellulu chasing after her.
The 3 who suddenly received the paper bag were left confused, looking around in surprise.
”What’s going on, Jim? A love confession?”
”No way, I don’t know that girl… but she was cute. Maybe I’ve seen her somewhere. I can’t be underestimated either!”
While having that conversation, the soldier called Jim opened the paper bag.
”Huh?”
The 3 froze as they looked inside.
Tomori and Ellulu dashed straight to Yokosuka Chuo Station and jumped onto the KQ line.
(It’s okay. With that vibe, they probably couldn’t even look me in the eye. Mission accomplished!)
Ellulu was still catching her breath but was excited, saying how fun it was.
(Yuuta. I’ve checked off one homework assignment now.)
Tomori felt a weight lift off her shoulders and almost dozed off, nearly missing his stop at Shinagawa Station.
