Volume 3 Chapter 10, Part 2 Each Person’s Destination

In the Queen’s office at Zerlant Royal Palace, Queen Asuka and her brother, Count Yōmo and Rainsheyn, also Chancellor, are secretly discussing it.

”Why did you suddenly show up, and why did you clear the area, brother?”

In response to Queen Asuka’s question, Count Yōmo answered weakly.

”Well… I can’t use the channels I’ve built with the neighboring country at all. They’ve all refused to connect with His Majesty the Emperor, so I rushed here in a panic.”

”What? Are they planning to cut off relations with us!?” the Chancellor shouted.

”I don’t know. We have some spies in the neighboring country, and they haven’t reported anything suspicious… but it’s better to be cautious. Just think about that simple gate. If suddenly armed soldiers stood behind us, it would be terrifying.”

”That’s true… Chancellor. Please urgently advise the Royal Capital army and the surrounding lords to prepare for emergencies. Also, about that simple gate, right now, Sistemador and the Royal Palace mages are getting a lecture on its principles from Lieutenant Reina and are working on countermeasures. I hope they can come up with something in time.”

”Yes. It seems that the sister of the head secretary Puruun is working day and night, forgetting to eat and sleep…” At those words from Chancellor Rainsheyn, Queen Asuka interjected.

”I understand her feelings well, but please make sure to tell Sistemador and Captain Yoruku not to push her too hard.”

At that moment, Melon was deeply focused on researching the simple gate in the lab beneath the Royal Palace.

Lieutenant Reina was also banned from going out, but she was given permission to move freely within the lab while assisting with the research.

”So, Ms. Reina. The Empire’s simple gate can’t be used over such a long distance?”

”That’s right. It uses quite a bit of mana to connect spaces, so it depends on the mage’s ability to control mana. In that sense, that bear man can handle a considerable amount of mana for a Beastfolk… oh, wait. I’m sorry. Ms. Melon, you’re also a Beastfolk. I apologize for the discriminatory comment.”

”Ah, you don’t need to worry about that. But with that story, you can’t use a simple gate without handling a decent amount of mana, right? Is there little worry about regular soldiers sneaking up from behind?”

”That’s right. But if we combine it with something like Ms. Melon’s battery…”

”Wow, that sounds scary. But luckily, the details of battery technology haven’t been shared with the Empire yet… and Zahar probably doesn’t know much about it either. So, Ms. Reina, it’s getting harder for you to return to your homeland.” Melon said with a hint of sarcasm.

”I also want to see this matter resolved to the end. And if possible, once we reclaim the gate, I’d like to be sent to that world, even if it means going through human experimentation.”

”Do you have some reason to want to go there? You don’t want to become a designer, do you?”

I said this jokingly, but Ms. Reina’s answer was serious.

”During the gate accident in the Empire, my younger sister got caught up in it and fell into the gate. Of course, her status is unknown. But I… I still hope she is alive in that world. I want to confirm that with my own eyes…”

”Ah, I see. I understand how you feel. In that case, even more so, we need Ms. Reina’s full cooperation to recover the gate and operate it properly.”

 *Stanford’s Perspective

 Where am I…

When I regained consciousness, my body was buried in snow.

No, to be precise, I must have fallen from a few meters above onto the piled snow.

 I still feel that sensation.

 Damn it!

In the snow, I can barely get up.

Anyway, I need to take off this backpack… phew.

I somehow managed to get up.

It’s cloudy, so I can’t see the sun or know which direction I’m facing.

All around me is just a completely white snowy landscape.

There are large coniferous trees here and there, but nothing that suggests human civilization nearby.

 What should I do?

Have I returned to my own world?

 Or…

I’m hungry, but the backpack I was carrying didn’t contain any food or water.

 This is useless.

Even if I have it, it will just waste my energy.

Thinking so I left my backpack there, and now I started walking along the slope, relying solely on my intuition.

 And eventually it became night.

I can feel the temperature dropping sharply on my skin.

It seems like this is the end.

I can’t get through the middle of winter nights when I stand there.

 But…good.

 There’s Cattleya in my pocket.

If it is with Cattleya, there is no complaint if it rots here.

I lie down on the snow and watch the sky, but it seems cloudy and I can’t see the moon.

”Cattleya…It seems it’s not New Jersey, but please hold on here. I’ll be with you too…” Stanford said, closing his eyes.

Ah, the snow is quite warm when you fill it up…

At that time, a sound came from a distance.

 What is that?

 Is it a whistle?

When I listened carefully, I felt that a faint clattering sound was reflected off the surface of the snow.

Damn, I’ve got a little more effort.

I go down the slope, Russelling deep snow.

 And…

 ”It was…it’s a track…”
