Volume 6 Chapter 34 Direct Warp

”Whaaa-?! We’re jumping straight in?!” Karin cried out in disbelief.
Lord Yohaku’s words caught me so off guard that my legs nearly gave out.
”Yes, Lady Karin. According to Grand Chancellor Claudel, we cannot tunnel through the Glacier anytime soon. Even if we did break through, we do not know how it might affect the Mana in the Ley Line (a river of magical energy). One wrong move and the whole thing could explode,” Lord Yohaku explained calmly.
”Are you out of your mind, Lord Yohaku?! If we go into a Ley Line with a basic Gate, we might get buried alive or drown in Mana!” I shot back, panicking.
”That is exactly why we will divide our tasks,” Lady Yasura said.
Deep in the frozen Vaulted Peaks, under a huge glacier, lay the Ley Line. It was a river of flowing Mana. Everyone thought it was the key to reaching Yggdrasil. But Lady Claudel said they could not go under the glacier right now. After a long talk, the Three Elders made this plan.
”Dividing… our tasks?” I asked, confused.
”Yes. First, Lord Yohaku will use a basic Gate to move us to the best place he can find. Right away, Lord Kororon will put up a shield. We do not know what is around us, so Kororon is best for this. She can use both Ki and Mana. Then I will check the Mana currents to find the way to Yggdrasil. After that, Lord Yohaku will move us again. We will keep doing this,” Lady Yasura explained.
”Lady Yasura, you make it sound easy… but it is clearly not easy!” I yelled.
”Of course it ain’t easy, child. This plan only works because old casters like us are working together,” Lady Yasura barked back.
”Only works?! If something happens to the Three Elders, what will I do?” I despaired.
[What are you talking about, Karin? You are coming with us, child,] Lord Kororon said calmly.
”Wait… Me too?” I gasped.
[Yes. The three of us did a ‘simulation’ last night. When we are all using our spells, we cannot watch out for ourselves. So we need an assistant to help with other tasks,] Lord Kororon added with a shrug.
”Huh? Then why not take some soldiers instead…?” I said weakly.
”If only it were that simple. Even with my ability, four people is the most I can warp for this distance. Also, there is a lot of Mana around, but we do not know how many jumps we will need… That is why we need someone small,” Lord Yohaku sighed.
”…I understand. I am not scared. And I cannot let the Three Elders do this dangerous mission alone. We are really doing this, right, Lady Claudel?” I asked, readying myself.
”I am so sorry, Lady Karin. This is a very dangerous mission… Maybe if we waited, we could find another way…” Lady Claudel said with regret.
”It is fine. My mother and Syu have no time left. If the Three Elders say this can work, then I have to trust them,” I said firmly.
[That is the spirit, Karin. We have not lived these long lives for nothing. Trust us old folks,] Lord Kororon laughed.
”I have not lived as long as that Spirit Clan member, but my name as the Chief Elder of the elves would mean nothing if I did not show what I can do now,” Lady Yasura said proudly.
”Oh, my. If this works, I plan to ask the Emperor for my own basic Gate. Then I will travel around the world on my own~!” Lord Yohaku said happily.
”Right… Lord Kororon, Lady Yasura, Lord Yohaku… I am counting on you!” I bowed deeply.
A month passed. The Three Elders watched the Mana and the Ley Line very carefully. They found the right place for their first jump. Lady Claudel rushed to join them. They decided to start the next clear day.
”So, what did the King say?” I asked.
”Well, Lady Karin, he reacted just like you at first. He was very angry that we would try something so dangerous. But after we talked about how we could move forward without trusting the Three Elders, he chose to leave it in our hands. Also, we set up an emergency escape here at the base, with help from Sistemador,” Lady Claudel told me.
If something went wrong, the system would warp us back to this base’s Gate… But my mother used an emergency escape before, and look what happened… Well, no use thinking about that now.
”Karin. Looks like the weather will be clear tomorrow,” Lady Yasura said softly, looking at the sky.
”Then… tomorrow is the day,” I said. A sudden wave of fear ran through my body.
Lord Yohaku saw this and tried to lighten the mood.
”Well then, everyone! Why do not the four of us have dinner together tonight and share futons to sleep?” Lord Yohaku suggested smoothly.
”What kind of death flag are you trying to set up, you idiot Demon?! That is bad luck!”1 Lady Yasura snapped.
”Oh, please! The stronger our bond, the easier it is to teleport everyone together!” Lord Yohaku replied.
[Now, now. No need for that. Arguing does nothing. It sounds like a nice idea… What was that word you used, Karin? When young ladies gather to stay up late…] Lord Kororon thought aloud.
”A pajama party?” I offered.
[Ah! Yes, that is it. Let us have one of those. We need to be perfectly in sync for this mission,] Lord Kororon agreed warmly.
The next morning, the blizzard stopped, just as Lady Yasura had said. The sky was bright and clear.
”Ooh. The heavens are blessing our departure,” Lady Yasura said happily.
The night before, we had cleared out the living room and put four futons side by side. We drank and talked. We had to stop Lord Kororon three times from telling the whole history of the Spirit Clan… Honestly, seeing little girls lounging around and drinking was a strange sight… But as we talked about everything, the three of them fell asleep. Watching them sleep, I thought they looked really cute.
Lady Claudel stepped forward to say a final word.
”Everything is ready. Three Elders, Lady Karin… I am counting on you. Please do not push yourselves. If things look dangerous, use the emergency escape right away.”
”Mm. Shall we start? Lord Yohaku, Lord Kororon, are you ready? I hope neither of you has a hangover,” Lady Yasura grunted.
”Please do not put me in the same group as Lady Yasura. Alright, everyone… huddle up right behind me. You there, soldiers! Tie the four of us together tightly!” Lord Yohaku ordered with a clap.
I understand that being tied together is better than getting separated across dimensions. But will I even be able to help when we arrive? In the end, they wound us tight with ropes. We were packed together, our backs pressed against each other2.
”Huh? Where is the basic Gate switch… Ah, there it is. Found it! Alright everyone, here we go~!” Lord Yohaku announced, fumbling near her rear.
The moment I heard her say that, our bodies floated into the air.
Thud! “Ow…!” I groaned. We had dropped from a high place.
Thanks to Lord Yohaku’s basic Gate, we were supposed to appear inside the Ley Line, still tied together. But why was I at the bottom of the pile? I slammed my face into the ground.
”Where are we? It is completely dark. I cannot see anything…” I whimpered.
[Karin, we are inside the Ley Line. I put up the shield right away. We are safe for now. Yasura is focusing on tracing the Mana currents,] Lord Kororon whispered.
”Thank goodness. The first warp worked. Ugh, my face hurts…” I sighed, rubbing my nose.
[Heh. Your help was already useful. You cushioned us old folks. But hey, you idiot elf! Have you not calculated the next coordinates yet? The shield will hold for a while, but the air inside will not last forever,] Lord Kororon scolded into the dark.
”Stop calling me an idiot! …Ngh-! It is L42-S81-R650!” Lady Yasura barked through clenched teeth.
”Understood! Here we go again, everyone~!” Lord Yohaku shouted. Our bodies floated into the void again.
Please, God. Let us make it safely all the way to Yggdrasil!

Summary:
Moving forward after a month of preparation, Karin and the Three Elders initiate their dangerous direct spatial warp operation into the volatile Ley Line below the glacier. Despite the absolute absurdity of being bundled up together by the soldiers to prevent separation, the team successfully executes their first jump into pitch darkness. The group quickly realizes that their time inside the shield is ticking away as the oxygen begins to run low, leaving their final arrival at Yggdrasil dangling as an unresolved variable.

Trivia:
The warp capacity limit for Yohaku’s magic is exactly four individuals.
Kororon is a member of the Spirit Clan capable of manipulating both Ki and Mana to maintain defensive shields.
Yasura serves as the oldest elder of the Elves and specializes in tracing geographic layout through localized Mana currents.
Karin’s mother previously utilized a similar automated emergency escape device from Sistemador to return under grim circumstances.
The collective group of powerful magic users are physically represented as young little girls despite their vast historical age.
