Chapter 13 Evil Dragon’s Rage Must Be Calmed!

Edited by: Kanaa-senpai

”Eh, um… that roar, is it Lord Yaten’s?”

”Yeah. Looks like someone touched her Reverse Scale [T/N: a dragon’s forbidden spot].”

By the time that dragon’s roar echoed, there was no need to hide Yaten anymore.

Either Water Princess Mizuki would be drawn in as an ally, or she’d be treated as if she never existed.

Yaten was seriously pissed that her Mate had been touched, and the Miasma filled even the warded inn.

Beside me, Water Princess Mizuki screamed in half-panic.

”Weren’t they supposed to be sealed?! What is going on here?!”

”I unsealed Yaten when I became her Mate. To explain simply: you hugged me, so now Yaten wants to kill you out of jealousy.”

”Mate… Yaten’s… wait, no, please! I didn’t hug you with that intention—!”

 ”■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■…!!”

Yaten’s roar grew closer, and the Miasma thickened.

Without realizing it, Mizuki was already on the execution stand, counting down her last seconds.

Tears welled as she looked at me.

She hadn’t fully understood, but she knew her death was coming.

If the Evil Dragon approached me with that much hate, I’d panic too.

But Mizuki still clung to sanity—maybe because she thought an acquaintance could be reasoned with.

For now, I pulled her away from the entrance and set her behind me.

I had to do everything I could to calm Yaten, who was raging like an Aramitama [T/N: Shinto “wild spirit”].

”I’ll handle this. Mizuki, please, just stay quiet.”

”No! Let me explain! I’ll clear up this misunderstanding!”

No, if the cause shows her face, Yaten will only get madder…

Honestly, Mizuki’s fate didn’t matter to me anymore.

What mattered was that Yaten, carrying our child, wouldn’t stain herself with blood.

Too much rage could hurt the baby.

As her Mate, I had to calm her no matter what.

”Little snake! To dare hug my Mate’s arm—!”

”Mother, please calm yourself! Father would never be swayed by such a thing!”

”But still! Can you watch calmly as your beloved father is touched by another female?”

”――――――!! I hate it! But killing her goes too far!”

Yaten raged closer with a roar, but at least reason was left.

And Sakuya’s words—life must not be taken—proved her moral training was working.

That made me so proud, just like the first time she took her first steps.

”Um… there’s someone else here besides Yaten?”

”My daughter! The child born of me and Yaten. Ahh, Sakuya’s grown, to care about others’ lives.”

”Yaten’s child… wait, aren’t you Head of the Shiryuin Clan…?”

”That’s right. Once enemies, but after becoming Mates and having a child, everything changed.”

I couldn’t hide the joy at my daughter’s growth.

Mizuki looked completely lost, but I didn’t care.

The Evil Dragon and her seal-keeper becoming partners—outsiders didn’t need to know how.

Let Mizuki freeze; easier to protect her that way.

Yaten’s jealousy was almost adorable—if lives weren’t at stake, I’d hug her myself.

But if I moved wrong, Yaten might curse Mizuki from afar.

Legends said a single thought from the Evil Dragon could kill.

Even if I could block it, she wouldn’t risk using it with me nearby.

 Besides, Sakuya was watching.

The roars grew near, until silence fell at the entrance.

The sudden stillness was worse than noise, pressing on us.

 And then—

”I’ll come in now. Father, please take Mizuki into your care…!”

”Leave it to me. I won’t let your mother turn into a god-slayer.”

From the hallway came Sakuya’s desperate voice.

I imagined her barely restraining Yaten like a beast on a chain.

The door opened, and Yaten glared straight past me.

Her slit pupils widened, fury spilling out as Miasma poured from her.

A bowstring stretched to breaking. A balloon about to burst.

 One nudge, and she’d explode.

Her gaze shifted from Mizuki to me.

And then, suddenly, her expression melted.

”Husband… I missed you. Thanks to that little snake, I finally understand how much I love you. Yes, this is Mate—bound wings that can’t be parted. So, may I ask? Just move aside, right or left, just one body’s length.”

Ah. She really wants to kill her.

She asked politely, like a wife to her husband.

But her eyes turned cruel the instant she looked at Mizuki.

 ”Eek… ah… ahhh…”

Behind me came a faint scream, like a death rattle.

This was Evil Dragon’s killing intent—negotiation was useless.

She froze like a frog before a snake.

 ”H-help!”

 ”Don’t beg my husband.”

Yaten’s cold voice alone sealed Mizuki’s lips.

”A little snake dares make moves on my Mate… such reckless courage.”

 She smiled widely, stepping closer.

Not at me, but showing Mizuki that cruel grin.

Sakuya entered next, staring in shock at her mother showing her dragon side.

She looked at me—Father, stop her, I can’t.

 I couldn’t ignore that look.

I’d meant to do this from the start, but Yaten really had lost control.

 ”Wait, Yaten.”

”Don’t stop me. I can’t yield on this. To almost lose my Mate—! I know you wouldn’t waver, but still, my fury must be quenched with this snake’s—!?”

I cut her words short by stealing her lips.

 She froze, eyes wide.

I caught her hand and pressed it against her swollen belly.

 ”――――――――! So that’s it, husband.”

”Better than words—feel the life you carry.”

”Our child’s heartbeat… yes, this clears my clouded eyes. A clever move.”

The moment that tiny life stirred, Yaten awoke not as an Evil Dragon, but as a mother.

From the depths of her womb came proof of something more precious than her own life.

That heartbeat shattered the haze of anger and the flood of Miasma born of hatred.

Her face lost its sadism, replaced with the gentleness of a mother guarding her child.

She focused everything on the stirrings within her belly.

After a long moment of listening, she let out a deep sigh and gave in.

”My spear has been sheathed by our child.”

”I’ll stop taking lives needlessly. For the sake of the child to be born, and for Sakuya’s worried eyes.”

If it was a true enemy threatening her family, mercy wasn’t needed.

But killing from jealousy alone was far too cruel.

 Yaten looked back.

Sakuya’s expression eased when she realized her mother had regained sanity.

They embraced, Yaten apologizing for making her worry.

”Forgive me, Sakuya. In my rage I ignored your feelings. You shouted yourself hoarse trying to keep me from staining our child’s life, and I failed as a mother.”

”If Mother has returned to her senses, that alone is enough for me!”

”I see… you’ve grown into quite the daughter, caring for your mother…!”

Like tying a knot, their embrace grew hot and firm, deepening their bond.

Watching, I turned my gaze to the one left behind—Water Princess Mizuki.

I should’ve apologized to her too, but Yaten had no care for anyone outside her circle.

To her, only loved ones mattered; the rest were nothing.

To expect more compassion from the feared Evil Dragon was too much.

That she could care for anyone besides herself was miracle enough.

 ”I… I was forgiven, right?”

”Not forgiven. Just lost her interest. Your fate will be discussed, but your life won’t be taken. Rest easy on that much.”

Of course Mizuki looked like she couldn’t rest easy at all.

 But I ignored her.

This was Yaten’s jealousy run wild—our fault, not hers.

So the compromise would be: her life spared, but bound by Exorcism until the Shiryuin Clan’s curse was broken.

No harm done, but her freedom taken.

Who would cast the Exorcism was for later.

Right now, there was something more important.

Yaten had put away her spear for me.

As her Mate, I owed her comfort in return.

She was pregnant—her heart bruised from jealousy—so her mental care mattered more than anything.

I had to fill that wound, and soothe her fully.

”Yaten, I want to say something.”

 ”What is it, husband?”

I drew her close, whispering in her ear.

”As thanks for sheathing your spear, let me comfort you.”

”Very well. I am with child, so nothing too rough—but still…”

At my words, Yaten smiled with the lascivious curl of a beast licking its lips.

She pressed herself to me, hiding her expression from Sakuya.

That melting gaze, that sweet breath, still set my heart racing no matter how long we’d been Mates.

”My body… take it in your strong hands, and soothe me—and the child within.”

And so, hiding from Sakuya’s eyes, Yaten and I shared our long-delayed night together.
