We reached the fifth floor without much trouble. Too quiet, almost. As a scout, she was incredible—night vision sharp, hearing sharper. By the time I noticed movement, she was already firing.
Floor five meant Goblins. Once fae helpers, now just classic cannon fodder.
Gear handled them fine unless a rare Commander showed up, and those made the little guys act smarter. I’d reported it once, but the guild never followed up.
She peeked around a corner, flashed three fingers—enemies ahead. I joined her, saw only one. With her vision, she’d spotted the rest.
’Only see one fifteen meters ahead. I’ll crush it.’
’I’ll shoot the two in the back. Cover me if I miss.’
’Got it. Keep it relaxed.’
We counted down. I sprinted. Behind me, two pops—one Goblin’s head exploded, another staggered. I finished the front with my hammer, her third shot cleaning up the last.
”Sorry. Missed the first one.”
”You slowed it down, and I finished it. It’s fine.”
”Next time I’ll do better.”
”Don’t overthink it.”
She ducked her head; I patted her shoulder. Arcane Guns were never perfectly accurate anyway.
We looted Mana Stones, moved on. At a crossroads, she tested the air.
”Wind from the left. That’s down.”
”Let’s check right first. Might be chests.”
She darted off, silent as a thief, and called back—
”Found a chest!”
”That’s a Mimic.”
”…eh?”
It twitched, lid splitting into fangs. A tongue lashed out—I blocked with my guard.
”Use Steal!”
”Wha—oh, Steal!”
She fumbled, then succeeded.
”I got some kind of… stone?”
”Seriously? Jackpot.”
Stat-boost stones—rare drops, only from Mimics and ghosts. And she’d nailed it first try.
”Alright, it’s done its part. Let’s smash it.”
”Wait, no more stealing?”
”Mimics are cheapskates. One item only.”
”…ehhh…”
I hammered its lid. It snapped, drooling slime. She squeaked, clutching her chest where it had licked her.
…damn box.
”Crushing Blow.”
The dent cracked. One more hit and it died. I ripped out a peach-sized mana stone, tossed it into my Inventory, and kicked the corpse.
”Hey—hey!?”
”It pissed me off.”
”That doesn’t mean you can kick the corpse…”
